Caught Catching Me.

Summary:

His request for Agent Dayang was promptly declined. In her shoes stood Ali, disturbed by his argument with Alicia and all too curious with Neonimus’s backstory.

And, oh, what’s a game without choices?

Notes:

Chapter Text

His cell was a taunt for freedom, encased with the highest of barricades. Mata deemed him dangerous, an unlikely afterthought considering his earliest history with them was service and loyalty.

“Kau nak apa?” Neonimus grumbled harshly, staring at the blinding light in front. Despite the brightness stood a shadow shaped too much like someone he didn't want to see. Ali. The boy who beated him all these times and nearly killed him. Just because he toyed with his little girlfriend, simp.

Neonimus was still very much so disappointed, whether Ali tied to that or not. His half of the plan was left unmet, meaning Satria is still stable and the database remains uncompromised. All because Agent Dayang declined seeing him, the usual understanding and sympathetic Dayang, firmly rejected walking into his lure.

Cero was going to be pissed. He knew through and through about their behaviour, except for this, the thin probability Dayang might not care for him anymore, after the years he left and the trouble he caused. Cero couldn't predict choices.

Neonimus’s lip quivered abit as he set his head down, would Cero still boot him out? He had done so much in favor of this elaborated plan and this— for the most of it wasn't even his fault! He cried and wormed his way into the hardest of hearts to get his request reached perfectly anyways. Neonimus did everything right as he’s meant to do.

The cell was so unbearably cold and seconds felt like hours. It felt like what it was, a total prison. Neonimus couldn't stand staying here longer than it needed to be. Worsen with Ali’s arrival, who in all his rather adorable fashion was still studying him, like he was a concept more than an enemy.

Ali tilts his head slightly, his humongously big eyes staring without the expected loathe, for a moment Neonimus is reminded that this is still very much so a child. Probably reaching 13, does Mata even recruit kids that young anymore? Neonimus was 13 himself during his time.

“Kau ex-ejen kan? Kenapa aku tak pernah dengar pun?” Ali voiced finally, no hint of interrogation Neonimus knew so well. That's a surprise, and here he thought they sent Ali to scare him for information. Which in all defense, Neonimus would totally fall for.

That means.. Whatever reason Ali came here for, it’s surely not from an order.

His heart reminicines a time, just before he was executed. He would waltz into cells of enemies he’s beaten, innocently curious of their reasonings until cruel reality checks and even crueler ideas were practically amended in his head.

“Bobby pun tak ingat aku?” he asked in disappointment.

“Dia.. aku tak rapat sangat.” Ali admitted shyly, grazing the tip of his foot on the floor. Neonimus looked closely, to which he always did, Ali’s cheeks were slightly pink and his eyes glazed with guilt. Weird.

Ali finally decided to activate the barricade as he inched closer, “Kau baik dengan dia ke?” he asked. “Tak.” Neonimus blurted truthfully, brushing away his dirty blond hair. Ali's eyes widened in surprise, clearly not expecting the answer. Because for all he knew in his childish mind, people only ask about people they love.

Keyword : Childish.

For some reason, his story sputtered like word vomit, probably craving the chance to explain after being left unheard for so long “Dia la antara punca aku disingkirkan. Selain nak buat ruang untuk kau, kitaorang selalu gaduh dan Mata lagi hargai kepentingan dia dari aku. Silap besar.” he gritted, hate dripping over each word.

“So, Mata killed two stones with one bird la kan?” Ali says, a tiny finger on his bottom lip. Neonimus huffed in disbelief, had he really lost to this? A kid who can't even get his idioms right? “Bodoh. Killed two birds with one stone la.” he snarked.

“Oops.” Ali laughed, scratching the back of his head. Neonimus’s lips stayed parted, disbelief and something he could only wish was wrong. Humor, Neonimus was absolutely humored by his enemy. He laughed, and it sounded wrong, harder until tears were dribbling down his cheeks. It wasn't funny, he promised himself, still laughing.

By the time Ali left, the cell felt quiet. Too quiet, and strangely very empty. Ali was a nice deterrent to his utter boredom and now it all came crashing down in full force. He promised to visit again, Neonimus needed it to be now. A mere–yet still so much so agonizing few hours.

He probably wouldn't even. What was Neonimus thinking? Ali was toying with him, dangling fun over his head and making him dependent with attention. Cero was right, Mata agents mustn't be trusted, as cute and sweet they are. As Ali-like they seemed.

Neonimus was half asleep when his cell lit up again. His heart thudded in excitement until he actually saw who came to visit. Agent Alicia. The new Iris wielder and Ali’s little sassy girlfriend. The one caught in his literal web that morning was as sharp and steady as ever. Seemingly unscatched but Neonimus knew better.

“Best tidur?” she asked, her figure almost covered by the azurium barricade. Her voice radiated firmness, despite being out of battle. Distinctly, Neonimus recalled her being the General’s adopted daughter. That’s why.

“Ha?” he voiced groggily, rubbing his eyes with the tip of his wrist. What’s with Agents and their preference in disturbing enemies? Whilst Ali was likeable, he firmly doubts his luck with Alicia. “Bukan korang nak interrogate aku esok ke?” Neonimus slurred lazily, straightening his posture.

Alicia clicked her tongue, “Itu Mata, ini aku.” she snarled. Her patience was thinning, Neonimus couldn't recall it ever not. “Sabar la kalau nak sangat pun, aku penat.” he groaned, stretching his body. “Kalau kau tak nak aku boleh paks—”

Before her warning, came a loud set of happy skipping accompanied with Ali’s less than pleasant singing. Alicia’s face twitched, “Ali?” she inquired instead, eyeing the excessive snacks and juices. Ali’s face widened before it slowly morphed into displeasure.

“Kau buat apa kat sini?” he barked, “Jangan kata kau nak mintak inmates tolong kau ambil Satria!” Ali complained as Alicia’s face contorted, “For the last time, Aku. Tak. Nak. Satria.” she gritted in immediate anger. Neonimus huffed, the last thing he needed was an underage couple arguing in the middle of the night.

“Kau jealous dengan aku kan, aku selalu dapat semua gajet hebat!”

“Apa guna gajet hebat kalau pengguna bodoh!”

Ali’s face twitched, “Apa guna pengguna hebat tapi lemah!” he sniggered loudly, a finger right at Alicia’s face. Whatever crude remark or flame Alicia had planned was quickly distinguished, standing in its shoes was silence. Eerie silence that gave the idea Ali had stepped out of line again. Neonimus groaned uncomfortably.

Lemah?” Alicia voiced finally, voice tinier than her frame. She pulled Ali’s finger away from her, not with harshness but with fake nonchalance. She was trying not to let it visibly hurt her. “Betul la tu, aku memang lemah. Sikit-sikit jatuh bukan macam kau.” she admitted, darting her head away as she blinked too many to count.

“Alicia..–” Ali tried, guilt prominent, “Wey Alicia, tu bukan—aku tak bermaksud nak-” he tried to reach for her, but Alicia’s quick instinct left her to dodge immediately. “Aku tau apa maksud kau.” Alicia huffed, already walking away. “Alicia..” Ali trailed, curling his short fingers together into a fist.

“Jangan kata kau pulak nak nangis, kau yang buat dia.” Neonimus deadpanned, now fully awake and judging. Ali’s face turned to him and by all means he wished the brat didn't. Ali, with all the things he prided in being, was totally crying. “Macam mana ni?” he slurred through fits of tears.

“Nanti Alicia tak nak kawan dengan aku–pastu nanti tak ada yang backup aku bila aku kena buli—pastu General lucut aku–” he babbled incoherently, really really crying now. Neonimus thought of a lot of things, manipulation, running past the azurium barricade and praying he survives less than dead or, embarrassingly, try his best to help Ali.

Neonimus swears it’s manipulation, that he’s actually worming into Ali’s heart as something incredibly sinister and cruel but deep down, he knew, he cared too much to not help. That the sight of the boy in front of him, free from the cruelness that lies in this organization, was much like himself. Petite, young, impressionable. Ali was him all those years ago.

“Bak sini keropok tu, aku tolong kau.”

“Step one, kau kena bagi dia hadiah and minta maaf.” Neonimus says simply, munching on a bag of spicy chips with glee. It wasn't the exact brand he typically went for, but the taste was pleasant enough for him to reconsider his go to snack. Ali sniffled, nodding slowly without gazing towards him.

Ali’s eyes were strangely thoughtful, much like the last time he came to visit. “Kau.. Diorang tak bagi kau makan?” he asked, finally looking up with a raised eyebrow. Neonimus halted, his hand still fisting a handful of chips. He hummed, “Bagi.”

The kid scoffed, Neonimus really did want to question his nerve but every cell of his body was too tired to cooperate. It was as if every effort he ever placed was catching up on him. “Mesti sikit je, kat kita orang pun kedekut.”

This kid really can't shut up.

“Sudah la, selagi kau curi-curi bagi makanan, tak ada la aku mati kebulur.” Neonimus smirked, not very sneakily grabbing a juice box from Ali’s stash. Ali merely blinked before pushing another juice box towards him, “Aku memang amik untuk kita kongsi pun.” he says, as if it was the most obvious thing to date.

Neonimus bit his lip, counting his blessings throughout his life leading up to this : being an extremely talented hacker, escaping Mata with his precious memories, working under Cero, being spared—then having his almost killer bring him snacks in his cell at midnight.

It was probably the nicest thing anyone has ever done since Agent Dayang tried to talk him into being more patient with his surroundings. Ali was probably the nicest thing to happen to him. Neonimus churned at the idea.

“Cuma kau kena makan cepat la sebab aku kena buang semua ni sebelum balik.” Ali reminded matter of factly, already pushing aside a small clump of trash. Neonimus raised his eyebrows, “Oh ya, kenapa kau tak balik lagi?”

Ali quickly flushed, “Aku kata kat ayah aku yang aku tidur rumah kawan aku—” Neonimus shoved the empty chip bag aside, “Siapa? Viktor?” he asked, cutting him off. Ali tensed suddenly, looking at Neonimus as if only just realising he's been all nice to an enemy, a criminal in his cell. “Macam mana kau..” he trailed, looking almost fearful.

Neonimus remained unfazed, imitating his usual hacking session with his beloved console. “Setiap hari dia datang, memang la aku tau.” he said blandly, “Nak gelabah tu ingat la kau tengah borak dengan siapa.”

“Hm ya, sorry.” Ali squeaked, suddenly all too busy massaging his calves.

He clicked his tongue, “Step two, tunjuk kau genuine. Siapa je nak tengok orang jelas tak insaf.” Neonimus continued, brushing off the awkwardness as he began sipping his juice. Sour, very sour with a cutesy red techy theme, wait, is this really—did Mata really make exclusive snacks on par with the pillars?

And here he thought he was being too on brand.

“Jadi aku kena nangis ke?” Ali quizzed, looking a bit too against it as he scrunched his face. Neonimus shook his head in disappointment, “Buat malu je. Guna la ayat sendiri, tak payah formal dan tak payah guna AI untuk generate ayat kau.” he explained as Ali nodded in understanding, or whatever that meant for him.

“Kalau dia-”

“Kalau dia tak maafkan lagi, jangan tanya aku.” Neonimus huffed, throwing the empty juice box at the pile. “Alaa.” Ali whined, pouting his lips in ways that practically demanded to be punched. “Aku bukan therapist kau, Ali. Kau kaya kan, carilah orang.” he retorted immediately, massaging the bridge of his nose.

“Susah payah je aku bagi kau makan, Mu—” Ali grumbled, but before he could finish, Neonimus abruptly stopped him. “Jangan,” he warned in a cold sweat. Ali was going to use it, a stern artifact of the past he tried so hard to bury. “Apa?” he asked innocently.

“Jangan guna nama sebenar aku.” Neonimus warned, firm and tensed.

Ali blinked, not to dry tears before they fell, but out of confusion, “Sorry, Neo.” he apologized, sheepish as he brushed his hair with his cleaner hand. “Neo?” Neonimus raised an eyebrow. “Kenapa?” Ali asked back, a tinge of worry at upsetting him again.

“Kenapa panggil aku Neo pulak?” Neonimus asked, genuinely weirded out. Has Ali—only in a day’s worth, already considered them close enough to give him a nickname? “Kalau aku tak boleh panggil kau.. tu,” Ali said softly, rolling his eyes in ways that weren't annoyed but cautious. Like he was hinting at the forbidden name in any ways that were non verbal. “Aku panggil la kau, Neo.”

Neonimus shook his head lightly, “Habis tu, boleh la kan aku panggil kau, Li.” he teased, smirking at the boy whose eyes widen slightly. “Nama aku pendek dah kan!” Ali retorted. “Mana ada, Ah-li-e tu panjang apa.”

Ali pouted again, before getting up as if remembering something. “Alamak! Aku kena balik sebelum Viktor bangun!” Ali fretted, immediately reaching for the piles of trash.

Neonimus faced fell, having to face hours until his interrogation and even longer for Ali to visit him again sounded cruel, crueler than torture and brainwash his fellow Cero-followers faced, the ones he was felt unhooked for.

“Oh ya.” he murmured, not meeting Ali’s eyes. “Esok?” he asked, hope lingering far longer than needed to be. “Esok.” Ali promised, smiling sweetly. Neonimus smiled back, though it didn't quite reach his eyes and as Ali left to edit the cameras before truly heading home, the smile fell.

It's manipulation.

It's manipulation.

Why is he feeling genuinely upset?

Neonimus feared. He feared the heart that was growing, the heart that was shaping because of Ali, his almost murderer—the final boss in his game. Neonimus was losing his momentum, and it was because of a kid.

Not once did Cero cross his mind longer than he should have, which was absolutely sick because his plan would have succeeded by now. His plan to infiltrate by Neonimus’s imprisonment should have worked by now. It was practically foolproof.

But instead, Mata still held the upper hand and Neonimus was slowly losing his loyalty. He didn't know how far Cero’s patience could thin before it snapped completely.

And honestly? Neonimus feared that more than whatever the Agents had in store for him.

When he woke up, he wasn't at the cell. Whatever the place was, it was far nicer. “Bangun.” a voice says calmly, Neonimus knew by heart that it belonged to Agent Dayang. “Gentle sangat.” another Agent he doesnt recognise commented, hissing with venom. Agent Dayang sighed, ignoring his remark. “Baik, kita akan bermula sekarang.” she says instead, whilst the other rolled his eyes.

Distantly, he noticed Ali. Hunched between Agent Alicia and Agent Bakar, who seemed less than thrilled to answer his questions. Neonimus notes to ask what’s that about later.

“Kami akan mengambil darah kamu, ini bagi memastikan badan kamu bebas dari mikrobug.” Agent Dayang explained, Neonimus squirmed uncomfortably. Unlike the others, he wasn't filled with those tiny mind control bugs. Cero had trusted him enough to let him do as he pleases. Yet the idea of people—his enemies more or less taking his blood was still making his skin tingle.

Far scarier when the machine appeared from the depths of hell, gauge humongous. He feared what it might feel like being stabbed into his skin. “Bagi mendapat aliran darah yang deras and banyak, Ejen Amir akan mencari nadi kamu dan kami akan mengambil darah dari situ.” she continued, watching as the other Agent approached and began prodding his hand to find the perfect spot.

“Tak sakit ke?” he asked in worry. The Agent— Agent Amir scoffed loudly. “Buat apa nak tunjuk kesian kat kau?” he taunted, prodding harder until he finally found the spot. Agent Dayang was quick to his side, aiming the machine perfectly. “Sakit memang sakit, tapi kami akan merawat kamu sebelum kamu masuk semula cell.” Agent Dayang assured, “Sabar ya.”

The pain was excruciating when the gauge fell upon him, it felt like being slowly annihilated with an azurium gun and worse. He yelped in agony, closing his eyes as he squirmed and squirmed. Neonimus felt tears streamed down his cheek furiously and for a moment he wondered if death was this painful as well. “Neonimus, sabar. Kesakitan ni takkan pudar kalau kamu tak tenang.” he hears as he does his best to comply.

The pain subdued and he was met with the same Agents and a big screen. The screen showcased millions of hemoglobins, pure and not contaminated. Agent Dayang stared thoughtfully, “Darah dia suci.” she commented slowly. Agent Amir furrowed his brows, “Yakin?” he asked, pressing the machine further and eliciting more agonising screams. Neonimus briefly saw Ali winced through blurred tears.

“Ejen Amir,” Agent Dayang warned, eyes different from its usual softness. For a moment, Neonimus is reminded why Cero planned to use Agent Dayang instead of the others. That her heart far surpassed the others, something so exclusively Techno.

Agent Amir gritted his teeth, “Kita tak boleh tentukan dari setempat je.” he retorted, “Kalau nak hasil yang paling tepat, kita kena guna semua titik nadi penjenayah ni.”

“Dia budak lagi!”

“Iya, dan berapa kali kau tertipu dengan muka baik, Ejen Dayang!” Agent Amir hissed. “Ejen Bakar, keluarkan yang lain.” he ordered immediately. Neonimus watched as Agent Bakar hesitated for a moment before complying and pressing on a button that spawned plenty more of those contraptions.

Agent Dayang gave him a sympathetic look, before a dozen other machines jabbed into his body all at once. “Cukup!” Ali cried, horrified by the cruelty. Agent Amir did not listen, instead he turned to Agent Alicia. “Bawa dia keluar, sekarang.” he demanded.

Agent Alicia bit her lip briefly, dragging Ali by the wrist as the boy begged for mercy. Not his own, Neonimus’s. “Ali–” Agent Dayang tried, but huffed as she gave up. “Darah dia masih suci, puas?” she hissed back, in the style that was so un-Agent-Dayang like. Silence and then, “..Mulakan fasa kedua.”

Something wrapped around his neck, cold and hard. It was to prevent squirming, Neonimus assumed. “Sebelum kami mula menyoal kamu, kami akan memasang alat khas. Alat ini bagi memastikan jawapan kamu jujur dengan mengawal sebahagian daripada otak dan mematikan beberapa sel.”

In concept, it was scary. In reality, it was even worse.

As the headpiece clung onto his head, Neonimus’s heart thudded. Worry, fear and excitement all at once. “Tenang,” Agent Dayang ordered. “Kami akan mula soalkan kamu.”

The azurium barricade sizzled, revealing Ali. Neonimus didn't dare look up, the pain he felt apparent with every move. “Aku dah cuba,” Ali tried, immediately approaching him and reactivating the barricade. “Ejen Geetha kata kau hilang banyak darah and dia kena ganti balutan kau sebelum kau lepas keluar pun—a-and aku risau.” he said, something all too obvious. He was merely stating what Neonimus already faced after all.

“Neo, sumpah aku minta maaf. Aku tak expect pun—aku cuba‐”

“Tau.” he replied, far too cold for someone so concerned for his well being. “Kau dengan Alicia dah ok?” Neonimus asked instead, “Aku nampak dia heret kau.” he chuckled, iron on his tongue. Ali gave him a worried look, “Ok je, dia pun terkejut dengan kekejaman diorang.”

Neonimus’s eyes were vacant, “Kejam?”

Ali nodded furiously, “Dulu mana ada macam tu sekali.” he admitted. Neonimus hummed. To be fair, he was all about special treatment if it was meant for him—but this? It was raw torture. Sure, he posed a bigger threat than a simple old man with hatred deep in his roots but surely they had some decency left for him. Neonimus was an Agent before he was against it after all.

“Ali.” Both boys turned, standing in front of them was Agent Alicia. Neonimus’s blood ran cold. Had they really been caught? Like this, where he was still so weak and there was simply no way to defend themselves?

But Ali wasn't scared, in fact he was just.. peachy. “Kau bawak tak?” he asked simply, a calm expression prominent on his face. Agent Alicia sighed, lifting up two bags of liquids. One was translucent, probably water while the other was a dirty brown. Neonimus feared the latter, is that really what he thinks it is?

“Kau–kau tak marah?” he asked, staring directly at Agent Alicia. “Marah la jugak tapi aku tak nak ingkar arahan Ejen Geetha.” she said, handing Ali the two pouches. Neonimus handed Ali a curious glance before turning back to Agent Alicia. “Oh, ya. Kita orang bertugas bagi kau makan minum sebab leher kau kan kena.. tebuk.” Ali informed easily like he was given a task to throw away trash or wash dishes.

Agent Alicia stared, something apparent with her. “Kenapa? Kau ada benda nak sorok?” she asked, face lightly scrunching. If only she knew that his plan was left unmet because of them, that right now he posed less a threat than an ant. “Mana ada.” he said, the total truth, but it sounded too cautious to others.

Her stare lingered for a second too long before she turned to Ali, “Cepat pasang pouch tu, lepas ni kita kena kejar training pulak.” she said, completely dismissive. Agent Alicia fumbled with one of her many pockets before she reached a small balm.

“Pakai ni kalau tak nak sakit.” she said, handing the balm towards him. “Aku kena pakai kat mana?”

“Perut. Kita orang nak tebuk.”

The scream of absolute terror Neonimus let out was nowhere near masculine. “Kenapa?” he cried, taking the balm anyways. He fiddled with the cap before taking nearly half of the contents and rubbing it on his stomach. Neonimus was thankful his prison wear was as loose as it could be, hiding his stomach as he worriedly massaged the balm into it.

“Benda apa ni?” he asked, slightly squirming from how cold it felt on his stomach. “Gel khas untuk tahan sakit, selalunya orang guna sikit je.”

Ali laughed, “Nampaknya lama la kau tak rasa sakit.” he teased, not unkind. Neonimus frowned, “Kalau tak tebuk terus kan senang.” he grumbled, wincing at the metallic taste on his tongue. Agent Alicia sighed, “Bukan sengaja.” she voiced. “Dulu, Ejen Rizwan dikawal dengan mikrobug. Dia tiada pilihan pun nak ingkar Uno. Kalau bawahan Cero pun boleh, apa tah lagi orangnya.”

Ali flinched at the mention of Agent Rizwan, subtle but there. Neonimus thought for a moment, “Jadi..” he trailed. “Jadi, Mat–Ejen Dayang ada harapan yang semua kau lakukan ni bukan pilihan kau. Yang kau masih.. baik.”

Oh.

“Tapi bila dia tengok darah kau bersih.. hati dia dikecewakan lagi.”

Neonimus looked away guiltily, a sudden wave of regret washing over him. Sure, he's still very loyal to Cero and his ideologies, but could that be tampered with had Mata treated him as nice as they did?

“Sudah. Buka baju kau.” Agent Alicia ordered. unfazed. Neonimus screeched, though in his better judgement it wasn't all too noisy. She sighed deeply, waving over for Ali. The boy snorted, scooting over and lifting up a pouch, perched with a metallic gauge similar to his interrogation. “Oh.” he blinked.

After both pouches were gently prodded into his stomach, Neonimus let oit a sigh of relief. “Ok?” Ali asked curiously, poking the metal straw at his stomach before looking up. Neonimus hummed, shifting abit. “Ok, tapi rasa pelik.” he admitted, his own finger grazing the metal. It was cold, colder than applying the gel and the utter difference of the metal to his soft skin felt.. wrong. Like a bone sticking out except there was no pain.

“Sebaik tak berdarah.” Ali revelled in relief.

Neonimus didn't say anything, at least at first. But when the realization hit he couldn't help but voice his thoughts, “Jadi.. semalam tu diorang tak reti la—”

“Bukan.” Agent Alicia denied again almost instantly, wrapping her arms together. “Tu bukan sebab diorang tak reti. Diorang sengaja tebuk titik nadi kau supaya kau sakit.”

Neonimus winced. “Macam mana kau tau?” Ali retorted. It was somewhat defensive, like he was trying to back them up. Which didn't make any sense, simply because Ali was totally alright with badmouthing them earlier. Was he acting respectful now that Agent Alicia was here?

Agent Alicia bit her lip, something Neonimus noticed to be a sign of guilt in her. “Aku terdengar, time amik pouch makanan,” she admitted and Ali’s face thinned slightly. “Tapi..” she trailed, hesitant, “..Tak apa la.”

Neonimus frowned despite knowing. Of course it was to make him suffer bit why did the blatant admitance shatter something within him? “Pergi la training tu.” he said, completely dismissive. Ali and Agent Alicia exchanged a look. She pushed for Ali to head out first, which he complied to like a simp he is. As Agent Alicia neared the outside herself, she frozed. “Kalau kau tak jahat maybe tak jadi macam ni.” she said, barely murmuring, not intended to be heard. But Neonimus had amazing hearing, lore filled games don't complete themselves.

“Sorry.” he murmured back.
