Chapter Text
It’s been a whole year since Connor Rhodes joined Chicago Med, which means it’s been a whole year since Will Halstead has been crazy in love with him. No, he did not realize this the moment he saw him, it took him at least six months to admit it to himself. In the beginning, he hated his guts, then he started to not hate him that much, but still had a weird feeling in his stomach when Connor was around him. At first, he thought that was simply the fact that Connor annoyed him with his never ending alternative ideas and cocky demeanour, but it started to feel too much like how he used to feel in high school when he layed eyes on the most beautiful girl. Well Connor was not a girl, and this was not high school anymore, but the feeling was too familiar to ignore. After one drunken night at Molly's, where Connor was there too, he finally admitted it to himself that he does in fact have a crush on his male colleague. Not just a crush, but a slowly growing love.
Of course it was unrequited, or atleast that’s what he always assumed. Rhodes had a fair share of girlfriends, and even more women eyeing him down everyday. The last thing he could imagine was the Doctor Connor Rhodes wanting to be more than coworkers.
It’s been a whole year since Connor Rhodes came back to Chicago, which means it’s been a whole year since he met the infuriatingly hot red-headed ED attending physician, Will Halstead. He spent every single minute since then trying to get him out of his head. Not only was Will probably straight, but he also seemed to be into Natalie Manning for the most part. Let alone Will seemed to have hated his guts, which at first Connor reciprocated, but that quickly faded into lusting over him. He still remembers coming out of that elevator incident feeling way too turned on for his own good. The best way to try to forget this whole crush was to date around, and hope that a woman catches his attention the same way Will did. But that plan seemed to not go well, since there he was, still trying to get glimpses of the fiery Doctor Halstead, who was just doing his normal job, looking at charts, helping patients.
Chapter Text
Will
Will was exhausted after an insane shift he just had. Not only one, but two patients died before even getting to have a surgery. It was not his day at all. Natalie was also in her typical Natalie mood, which added to Will’s never stopping headache. Ethan was also a wreck, maybe from the fact that he had a patient who served in the army. Bringing back all the memories. Will just wanted this day to finally end, and wanted to get home to relax in his bed. He slumped down into the sofa, his palms covering his face, his ginger hair all over his hands. He needed a few minutes to gather himself into a normal human being.
The door behind him opened, then shut. He did not bother to look up. All he felt was the sofa sinking next to him, then the familiar scent of Connor Rhodes hit him. Yeah, maybe Will was insane for recognising his scent, but they did work together after all, a lot of times during emergencies, their bodies were in the way of one another. He finally looked up from his palms, to see Connor just stare into the distance.
‘Tough day too?’ Will did not really catch Connor in the ED throughout the whole day. He probably had a lot of surgeries going on.
‘Let’s just say this was a day to forget for sure’
‘Tell me about it’ Will sounded almost as defeated as Connor, who still had a 100 yard stare going on.
Natalie entered the room, and shot daggers at Will. Her usual “I am better than you” walk did not fool anyone. Connor glanced at Will and chuckled a bit.
‘Well I am heading out. Good night Dr. Rhodes’ she chimed and then left the room like a hurt child on a playground.
‘I think you had it worse than me’ Connor put his hands on Will’s broad back, tapped him a few times, then also got up from the sofa.
‘It’s one of those days for everyone I think’ Will mumbled, trying not to think about Connor’s fading touch on his back.
‘If I was not feeling like a used sock, I would probably ask if you wanna grab a drink at Molly’s’, but I reckon you feel somewhat similar too’
‘Yeah, maybe another time’ Will nodded, then also got up to go to his locker.
Silence filled the room, and as much as Will wanted to keep on talking, he knew they were both too tired for the small talk.
‘I’m gonna have to talk to Goodwin about a patient’ Connor said, whiched piqued Will’s interest.
‘Why?’
‘Long story.’
Then why tell me? Will thought to himself.
‘Goodnight Halstead’ he patted his back again, then left the room, leaving only his cologne behind. He didn’t even give Will chance to say anything.
He tried to not let these small touches get to his head. Connor would probably not appreciate the fact that Will thought about him this way.
He did not bother getting dressed down, he will take a shower at home and jump into something comfortable anyway. He walked out, said goodbye to the unlucky nightshifters, then walked into the cold Chicago air. It started to get breezy again, as the cold November was approaching. He opened his car and plumed down into the old seat. He put the key in ignition, but as he was about to start it, the car made a very worrying sound.
‘No, no…’ Will started to panic. No way his car is about top breakdown now, not after this disastrous shift.
He tried again, but the car only made an even more horrendous sound.
‘Motherfucker!’ he got out, lifted the hood to see if he could fix anything.
Will was not really into cars, hence he had no knowledge of what to look for. He tried to look at it, like it was a patient, but he quickly realised he did not study car anatomy for this to work. He did spend the next few minutes trying to look for a solution, until he felt someone stop next to him.
‘You good Halstead?’ It was, of course, Connor Rhodes.
‘This stupid car broke down, while I tried to turn it on’
‘I mean, it does look quite old’ he examined the Ford Focus.
‘Thank you Dr. Rhodes for that comment’ he hissed at him, annoyed by his silver gated remark.
‘Can I help you with something?’
‘Well if you know how to fix a car, like you can perform a surgery, then yeah, go ahead’ he stopped looking into the hood, his hand gripping the top of it.
‘I might not be your man for that’ Connor smiled awkwardly as he stared at the dirty motor and other intestines of the car.
‘Never took you for a guy who works with his hands like that, anyway’ okay maybe he was a bit bitchy, but that old car comment did piss him off.
‘Well you can’t seem to fix the issue either, so maybe it’s not my upbringing that makes me unable to solve your problem, which by the way, I offered to help you out with, yet you make it seem like I am the reason for the fact that this prehistoric thing broke down.’
Will did not say anything, Connor was right. He was bitchy right now. Natalie’s mood probably spread to him too. Still, he is not going to apologize, he is tired and Connor knows that.
‘I will call a tow and get home with the train’ he shut the hood with a big thud, not caring about how much that hurt the car.
‘I can drop you off, if you want me to’ he offered, his dark blue eyes reflecting seriousness and kindness at the same time.
‘No, no need for that. We also probably live on opposite sides of the city anyway’ maybe it was Will that always brought up their upbringing differences.
‘It’s late, I reckon there won’t be any traffic’ Connor said, still keeping his offer up. ‘Plus you probably work in the morning as usual, you should sleep instead of waiting here in the cold for a tow, then getting on the train and walk god knows how much to your house’ Connor did make great points, but Will’s ego was not sure if he was able to let Dr. Rhodes drive him home.
‘I still need to tow my car though’ he leaned on the hood, which made his scrubs dirty. Probably not as dirty as the shift before this.
‘I will call the company that usually handles this kind of stuff for me’
‘You need to tow your Ferraris and Porsches that often?’ Will sassed at him.
Connor shot him a look, while taking his phone out of his pockets. He was wearing his scrubs still too. His dark light eyes behind those full eyebrows sent shivers down Will’s spine.
‘I will call the tow company’
‘I don’t think I can pay for what you can’
‘Good thing I am paying for it’ he said, not even looking up from his screen.
‘Yeah, no. That is not gonna happen Rhodes’ he protested, but Connor already had his phone up by his ear, the faint ringing sounds filling the cold air.
‘Hello, this is Dr. Connor Rhodes’ he introduced himself.
Will was pissed and he honestly felt humiliated. Connor has done this before, in the beginning with the tie, then with other small gestures. Will was not sure if this was a regular Connor Rhodes thing, or he only bought things for Will because he pitied him.
‘Yeah, thank you, okay’ he faked a smile, then put the phone down. ‘They will take the car and fix it too. We don’t have to wait for it though. They will call when it’s done. Might be by the morning, they work fast’ he put his strong hands on the taller’s board shoulder.
‘Do you ever take no for an answer?’ Will was defeated. God, Connor drove him mad when he did these things.
‘Come on, let’s go. These scrubs are not for the cold weather’ he did have his big black coat on him though.
Will looked back at his grey car, sighed, then opened the door, took his keys out, then locked it. He followed the black haired man to a beautiful black Ferrari that was just sitting with the regular normal cars of other workers and patients.
Connor clicked his keys, and the car’s doors opened on it’s own.
‘You know, this feels like that movie that came out last year about the rich CEO and the assistant.’
‘Which one?’ Connor looked at him curious from the other side of the vehicle.
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Will said with a straight face, which made Connor chuckle.
‘Fifty Shades of Grey?’
‘Yeah.’
‘You’ve seen that?’
‘I pirated it after an intense shift. I needed something to turn my mind off’
‘Off or on?’ he teased, which Will rolled his eyes at, then sat on the front seat. The car was oddly low.
Connor joined him, shifting in his seat, bucking his seatbelt, then turning the car on. It smelled so much like Connor, with a hint of leather and the regular smell of something that was new. Will had no idea how to describe that.
‘Write your address into the GPS’ he ordered Will, who leaned forward and did what he was told to. If he was slightly less tired, this whole thing would have never happened. ‘That isn’t even that far away’ he looked at the GPS, then at Will.
Will couldn’t help but blush at the intense glare from Connor. Why does he look at everyone like that? Maybe it’s just his dark blue eyes, mixed with his perfect face that makes every glance more intense.
After a few minutes into the ride, Connor turned the radio on. The station was playing a song from Taylor Swift’s latest album. Will was surprised to see Connor vibing to the bubblegum pop song. It looked so natural, like he listens to this kind of stuff all the time.
‘You like Taylor Swift?’ Will asked, after he realized Connor caught him staring.
‘Yeah, I mean, my sister listened to her country album that came out like a decade ago.’
‘I didn’t take you to be a Taylor Swift fan’
‘What did you take me for then?’ he looked over, his eyes wondering up and down on Will’s body, who swore his breath stopped at that.
‘I don’t know. Maybe someone who listens to The Killers or something’
‘Mr. Brightside is a banger for sure, but I like my pop music, thank you.’ he smiled a little.
Will couldn’t help but think about how his strong grip on the wheel would feel against his skin.
‘And what do you listen to, sunshine?’ not this stupid pet name. The least thing Will felt like today was sunshine. Sunshine, my ass - he thought.
‘I quite like indie rock music a lot. Big fan of Radiohead, The Fray, and similar stuff.’ They were getting close to Will’s home now.
‘Next time your relic breaks down, we can listen to Look After You’ he joked, but Will for some reason hoped his Ford would give up on life as soon as it gets revived. Just like his ED patient today. Speaking of the ED, Will was still curious what made Connor talk with Goodwin.
‘Why did you talk with Goodwin?’ he asked.
‘During a surgery of mine a patient woke up during anaesthesia, turns out he has a long alcoholism history, making the anesthesia not enough. I just wanted to get this clear with Goodwin, nothing special’
‘Yikes, that sounds like a mess’
‘Erh, not even as bad as my other surgery’ he shrugged it off.
By the time the new EDM song finished, they were at Will’s place.
‘I won’t thank you, because you literally forced me to sit in this car’ he joked. Well half-joked.
‘Goodnight to you too Dr. Halstead’ Connor smiled, as Will opened the low door and stepped out of the car.
‘Bye Connor’ he shut it and waited until Connor drove off.
Will couldn’t help but smile to himself as he was walking to his door, opening the small but compact house’s door. He still lived with Jay, which was sometimes good, and other times terrible. Speaking of Jay, he was sitting at the kitchen table, eating what seemed to be Will’s leftover chinese from yesterday He is such a piece of shit for eating his food.
‘Did not hear your car in the driveway’ he chewed, his mouth full.
‘My car broke down today in front of the Hospital’ he stripped out of his coat.
‘Shit, that sucks’
‘Yeah it does’
‘You took the train?’
‘No, a colleague took me home’ he answered, while undressing already. They were brothers after all, they have seen each other half naked a million times.
‘Which one?’ he asked curiously.
Will sighed, then told him. ‘Rhodes’
Jay grinned like a 5 year old. He did know about Will’s little crush, after he forced that confession out of him months ago. He didn’t understand why Will didn’t get together with Natalie, who seemed to be open to the idea. Well, Will had to tell him that the reason is his weird homoerotic feelings for Connor Rhodes.
Will has found other men attractive before, but never really seriously. And yeah, he did like Natalie for a while. That “while” lasted until Connor rolled in on top of a patient into the ED like some kind of superhero. So full off himself, so arrogant, and so fucking intoxicating.
‘I hope your panties didn’t soak his expensive Lamborghini.’
‘First of all, what the fuck Jay’ he looked at his brother with a “are you for real” expression. ‘Second of all, it was a Ferrari’
‘Thanks for the correction, I wouldn’t have been able to sleep without that information.’ He finished eating, putting the dirty dishes into the sink, next to the others. Two overworked men vs. cleaning the house. Impossible to win that battle.
‘Nice of him to bring you home though. He might be disgustingly rich, but he has the same amount of hours a day as us.’ Jay said, sounding pretty reasonable. Jay did like Connor, they have met a few times. It took him a while to digest that Connor was a man, but it started to feel less and less weird. He was pretty supportive of Will’s raging crush.
‘He practically forced me into his car’
‘I am guessing you enjoyed that’ he drank from a glass.
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
‘Go and shower. You smell like blood and vomit’ Jay grimaced.
Few minutes later Will’s skin was burning against the hot water. He could feel every drip hit the tiles as his thoughts wandered off to Connor’s pretty face. Jay is right, Will secretly loves when Connor is dominant, when he bosses Will around. It annoys him as much as it turns him on. Fuck, he was supposed to end this stupid crush, but it’s so hard to come off from Connor’s high. He truly was intoxicating. He feels like he is going to explode one day at the ED. He is not sure how long this can go on. As good as it feels to be high, it feels just as lonely and dark when he thinks it through. Connor would never be interested in him and he needs to accept that somehow.
Chapter Text
Connor
Waking up to the grating sound of his alarm made Connor want to throw his newest phone out the window. Yesterday after he got home, he drank some wine and passed out thinking about Will Halstead. He wished he did not have those thoughts, but he did. Those thoughts did work in his subconscious, because he woke up with a painful boner. He rolled his eyes, then started to contemplate how to deal with it. A cold shower would be the most optional, but he did have enough time for a quick release. He chose the latter.
His mind was filled with thoughts of Will, and nothing else. He retraced all the parts of the red headed man he had touched, stolen strokes, gentle grazes. They bumped into each other a lot. There isn’t enough room for two muscular men in a small emergency room for sure.
The first few hours at the ED went quick. He had one heart surgery, which was a success. A well needed success after yesterday.
He definitely needs a deserved coffee. He stumbled into the Doctor’s lounge where Natalie was sitting, also sipping her daily dose of coffein.
‘Morning heart surgery?’ she chirped, sounding a lot happier than yesterday.
‘Yeah’ he nodded and started the coffee maker.
‘You coming to Molly’s tonight?’ she asked.
‘Why?’ he was not looking at her, only at the machine, which definitely pissed Natalie off a little.
‘Celebrating Noah’s birthday’
‘Who is Noah?’ he shot her a confused look.
‘Noah? April’s little brother? C’mon Rhodes, you have been working here for a year now’ she sounded disappointed.
‘Oh. I don’t know. Depends on what kind of surgeries today has in for me’
‘Makes sense. Well you should come if you can’ she got up from the couch and as she was leaving the room, Will came in. They exchanged fake smiles, and Will hopped on the couch.
‘Hey Halstead’ Connor greeted him while pouring his drink into a small cup.
‘Hi’ a muffled sound came out of Will’s mouth as he was folding himself into his knees.
‘You good, man?’
‘The tow company woke me up at 4:30, so my answer to that is no’
‘Shit, I’m sorry ‘bout that’ he sipped into his coffee, then leaned against the counter, admiring Will’s broad shoulders that looked insanely good in his maroon shirt.
‘You should be’ he joked, which made Connor crack a smile.’
‘Dr. Haltsead’ Reese came into the room. ‘Am I bothering you?’ she asked with her shy and fragile voice. What a cute and sweet girl, Connor thought.
‘No, what’s up?’ he folded back up, and looked at the curly haired woman.
‘Can you please help me with a case? I am not sure what symptoms are actual physical symptoms and what are psychosomatic’ she admitted, a little embarrassed. Reese just started out a few weeks ago as a psychiatrist resident next ro Dr. Charles.
‘Have you consulted Dr. Charles yet?’
‘He is on a case right now, I thought maybe you could help me on the physical part’
‘Yeah, sure’ he got up lazily, and as he was leaving the room, he looked back at Connor. That looked said absolutely nothing, but Connor wanted to think it meant something. He always wants to think it means something. But he did see how Will looked at Natalie in the beginning…
Another 7 hours passed. Two pretty normal and good resulting heart surgeries later, Connor was ready to leave the hospital. Only Maggie was here still, the others had finished their shifts and went to celebrate Noah Sexton’s birthday. After he changed outfits, he approached her, who looked at him with a tired, ‘I can’t wait to leave face’
‘You are still here?’ she asked with her sweet and passionate voice.
‘Yeah, but if I’m being honest, I would rather go home’
‘You’re not planning on ditching us, right Rhodes?’ she teased him, who sighed deeply.
‘Now that you figured my plan out…’
‘Go go!’ she waved him away. ‘To Molly’s! Don’t make Will sad by not showing up’ Connor looked at her with crossed brows, asking for an explanation on that little comment, but she turned away to another nurse. Don’t overthink it Connor, he said to himself.
As he got to Molly’s he was greeted with his coworkers already being tipsy. He did not realize it was past 10 pm already. How long have they been here? He hates catching up on drinking.
‘Connor, I am happy you made it’ Will slammed onto his side, his arms flinging over his shoulders. He smelled like beer and some mixed hard liquor.
‘Jesus Will, he just got here, don’t traumatize him’ Natalie scolded the red-haired man, who quickly let go of Connor and stepped away a little.
‘It’s okay, I am just tired’ Connor glanced at Will, who looked like a child who just got scolded.
‘Let’s get you something hard enough to catch up with them’ Ethan smiled and they both walked to the bar area, where they sat down on some stools.
‘Four shots of Whiskey please’ he said with a straight face. His usual serious Ethan Choi face.
‘Four?’
‘Two for you, two for me. I am not drunk enough for this party’ he shook his head.
‘Yeah, I was not planning on getting drunk either, but after seeing everyone else’s state, I think I should be’
‘Let loose a little sometimes Rhodes’ he nudged him as the shots were layed in front of them. ‘Cheers’ they both took one and swallowed it. Connor quickly grabbed the other one before his whole body started to reject wanting to drink another.
About an hour later Maggie finally arrived. Connor didn’t even realise how long he was talking to Ethan. They drank some beer, maybe another shot went down too, so they were both quite light headed now.
‘My favourite nurse after my sister!’ Noah jumped to greet her and started to dance around. Yeah he is not gonna look good in work tomorrow, that’s for sure.
‘Come on, y’all drank this much already?’ she laughed and looked at his friends.
‘Whaaaaat? No, not at all Maggie” April was holding onto her boyfriend, like her life depended on it.
‘April, you can’t even look me in the eyes’ she shook her head, but not in a disapproving way.
Connor just remembered her odd comment about Will. Speaking of the devil, where is he at? He looked around to find him dancing with Reese, who looked as stiff as ever. Atleast it’s not Natalie. Though Dr. Manning looked very into the new 4th year med student, Jeff. Connor found it quite bizarre how that guy was her dead husband’s friend, and also has the same name. Dr. Charles would have a field day with her for sure.
Maggie settled in, only asked for a little wine, and they joined Reese and Will were still drunkenly dancing at their reserved tables.
‘Maggs!’ He smiled as he stumbled to hug her tightly. He looked like a baby deer who was just learning how to walk properly. Quite adorable.
‘Will, oh my god…’ she laughed awkwardly at the sudden intimacy. ‘You okay there buddy?’ she asked and the red headed let go of her.
‘Yeah, I am.’ he nodded, his usual neat hair all messy, his forehead sweaty. Connor could feel his pants tighten at the sight.
‘Fucking hell, let’s celebrate me!’ Noah shouted and everyone followed him with loud noises.
Connor has no idea how much time has passed, he was very buzzed, and very happy to let this week’s frustration out. Maybe he should do this more. Even Natalie was more tolerable like this.
Sometime around midnight, while Ethan was reminiscing about his past in the army to him, he saw Will looking quite rough. The alcohol’s highs were wearing off, and the low’s were coming in strongly, as he was sitting at the edge of the table, half asleep.
‘He looks awful.’ Ethan commented, as he caught Connor staring.
‘Yeah, he does’ Connor kept his eyes on him.
‘Should we call his brother to take him home?’
‘I got this. I will call myself a taxi and drop him off. I should go anyways’ he patted Ethan’s back who nodded.
Connor walked over to Will, who was slurring to himself, his right hand gripping an almost empty beer can.
‘It’s time to go home sunshine’ Connor loved calling him that. It fit him perfectly.
‘Fuck, I am so drunk’ he said and Connor laughed a little.
‘Yeah you are, I will take you home’ he rubbed his clothed back. ‘Just get up please, and don’t fall asleep here. You can do that in the taxi’
‘Uhummm’ he mumbled as he tried to get up. He gripped Connor’s biceps and hung onto him as he steadied himself.
Connor said goodbye to the others who were too out of it to really decipher what was going on. They walked outside into the cold air as he ordered a taxi on his phone. Will was heavy, barely standing on his own, and Connor wasn’t exactly the most sober either, so holding him up was not the easiest.
Will clung to him harder, his hand clutching Connor’s chest and leather jacket. He nuzzled his face into the black haired man’s neck, his hot nose and wet lips sending shivers down his spine, right to his pants.
‘I wanna sleeeeep’ he mumbled, sending vibrations through Connor’s body.
‘You will soon, Will’ he reassured him, which earned a happy noise from the ginger.
The taxi appeared after 5 minutes of waiting. As he was trying to put Will into the car, the younger bumped his head into the top of it.
‘Auh’ he growled, but seemed seemingly unphased. That’s gonna leave a mark.
After they both settled in, Will rested himself against the left door, falling asleep after a few seconds.
Connor gave the addresses to the chauffeur. The car moved fast in the dead of night. Despite his head aching and pounding from the shots and beers, he couldn't help glazing over to the ginger, who was sound asleep. He looked peaceful, not like yesterday, when he was groggy and tired from the ED.
The city passed by him quickly, the lights turning less and less bright as they were approaching the south of Chicago. Connor hasn’t been around the southside this much his whole life, than in the past 2 days. Even if the circumstances were odd, being around Will made him very content.
The car slowly approached the two story house, and Connor just realized he will have to drag Will into the house somehow. Was it too late to ring the bell and ask for help from Jay?
‘Wake up Will’ he gently shook the man, who did not budge at that. ‘Will’ he tried again a little harder this time, as he was getting angry looks from the chauffeur, who did not want to waste his time on them.
Connor got out of the car and slowly opened the left door. Will practically fell out, but that woke him up too.
‘I will help him inside, wait for me please’ he pulled out 20 bucks from his jeans and gave it to the bald man, who made some unpleasant noises.
Will was slightly in a better shape, he was able to use his legs while clinging into Connor. As they approached the front door, the black haired man decided to ring the bell. He was not about to start trying to find Will’s keys in his pockets. This is not how he wants to feel his body up.
‘What the fuck?’ Jay opened the door, tired and angry. ‘Is he okay?’ he asked slightly concerned.
‘Just very drunk and sleepy. Can I hand him over to you?’ Connor answered calmly.
‘Fuck, yeah sure, I mean what else could you do Mr. Dolan Rhodes’ he teased him, which earned an eye roll from the tipsy man.
‘Here you go’ he was trying to get Will to loosen his grip on his chest and shoulders to pass him to Jay, but Will was not participating in that. ‘Will, come on’ he nudged him harder, but nothing.
‘Will, my brother in Christ, let him go!’ Jay was not as understanding and calm.
Will was mumbling some udder nonsense, as Jay finally freed Connor from him.
‘Thank you for bringing him home, for like the second time in a row. Next time though, just bring him straight somewhere else’ he closed the door in Connor’s face who couldn’t even say goodbye or anything.
He walked back to the taxi and sat back to the right. The man looked at him like he wanted to ask something. Connor raised his eyebrows in exchange.
‘Don’t let your boyfriend get too drunk next time’ he was mocking. Both Will and the boyfriend part.
‘I don’t think that’s any of your business how drunk he gets’ he tried to remain undisturbed, but he was very much, disturbed.
The man scoffed, and started to drive.
Connor just realised how much more he would enjoy this if Will was actually his boyfriend. He did not correct the taxi driver, mainly ‘cause of pride, and mainly ‘cause he forgot to.
As he entered his own flat he started to undress himself. Even in his light headed state, he could sense Will’s fragrance on himself. It smelt sweet, mixed with some sweat and alcohol. In a way, that smells like a great night they could have… just the two of them. Maybe one day.
