The smell of grass fills the air when Patrick reaches the ball field. Stevie meets him in a Cafe Tropical uniform. “Shut up.” She greets instead of ‘Hello.”
Twyla comes up with her clipboard. “Patrick! You made it! Any preferences on position?”
Stevie snorts, and Patrick can’t help but smile.
“Catcher?” Patrick almost chokes on his words. He doesn’t.
“Any experience in baseball?” Twyla asks without missing a beat.
“Softball.” Patrick squeaks out.
“Same.” Stevie shrugs.
“That’s great! Once my dad managed a prison team and NO one had played baseball. Can you imagine?”
Patrick shook his head slowly no.
