Chapter Text
“Sonic, dear! Are you coming down soon? You don’t want to miss breakfast!” Vanilla said, a small smile on her face as she glanced up at the stairs to the second floor briefly, shaking her head slightly to herself.
“Y-yeah! Just hold on for a second, will ya’?” Sonic responded, his voice slightly muffled from the multiple rooms between them, but still very much coherent
Vanilla sighed as she shook her head again, returning her attention back to setting the table for breakfast. Her daughter, Cream, was already seated and ready to eat, but she was willing to wait a minute or two for her brother to arrive.
Though it didn’t take two minutes, or even one before Sonic was downstairs, only about 5 seconds before he slid down the railing of the stairs, almost tripping over his feet as he hops off it at the last second, but of course managed to regain his footing.
“And, as always, I made it just in time!” He stated cockily, turning on the heel of his red sneaker and walked over to the table, sitting himself down on the chair next Cream and threw his feet up on the table while putting his hands behind his head
“Sonic, feet off the table. How many times do I need to tell you?” Vanilla said as she gave him a look of disapproval, placing down a few plates with a few breakfast items on them, waffles being the main attraction.
But when Sonic only responded with a simple shrug of his shoulders, she gave his feet a light smack with a rolled up newspaper, causing the hedgehog to scoff and roll his eyes, but he did pull his feet off the table, leaning back in his chair a bit.
Cream let out an excited squeal at the sight of the waffles being placed on the table, the young rabbit’s excitement causing Vanilla to let out a short chuckle and she quickly moves two waffles from their original plate over to Cream’s with a fork.
“There you go, Cream. Just try not to drown them all in syrup like you did last time…”
Cream let an amused chuckle leave her lips at the memory, looking up from her breakfast to give her mother a quick shake of her head “Don’t worry, mother! I’ve learned from my mistakes! They didn’t really taste that good anyway…”
Vanilla sighed, her small smile growing ever so slightly wider as she sat herself down on the other chair beside her daughter, moving her own pair of waffles over to her plate. Sonic followed shortly in suit, though he took a lot more than two, actually six waffles to be exact.
“Oh, gee, dear. Please try to save some for me and your sister. We also have to eat, you know.”
Sonic looked up from his breakfast and attempted to say something in response, though most of it ended up being heard as mostly incoherent gibberish as he had already stuffed his face with at least half a waffle.
Vanilla once again sighed at the hedgehog, realizing that there was no point and that he was already a hopeless lost cause in the terms of waffle sharing and she simply starts eating her waffles, whilst making sure Cream didn’t pour way too much syrup on her waffles again, despite the young rabbit saying she wouldn’t, Vanilla didn’t necessarily trust her daughter all too much with that promise.
Sonic quickly devoured his many waffles, wiping his mouth clean with the sleeve of his varsity jacket, leaving a small, but noticeable mark of syrup on it. He quickly hopped out of his chair and stretched out his legs a bit, which caused a quiet groan to leave his lips
“Well… I’m gonna head out! Thanks for breakfast, Vanilla!”
“Oh, you’re welcome, dear. It’s my job to take care of you, and that includes making a good breakfast. But where are you going?”
“Eh, I dunno. I never do. I just kinda run around till I find something interesting.”
“Alright, dear. But don’t run, run. You know you can’t anymore.”
“Yeah, yeah. I got it. Don’t worry!”
“Okay, dear. But be careful, alright? I don’t want you getting hurt or doing something stupid.”
“Like I said, don’t worry! I totally got this. No warnings needed.”
“Oh! Can I come along? Please, Sonic? Can I?” Cream asked as she looked up from her breakfast, giving her brother a pleading look.
“Sorry, Cream. I’m going alone on this one. Maybe next time, though.” Sonic responded, giving the young rabbit a quick smile before he walked off and exited through the front door of the house.
“That boy… What am I going to do with him…?” Vanilla muttered to herself, a fond smile on her face as she sighed, returning her attention to eating her waffles.
Once outside, Sonic did as he said he would, he ran. Not as fast as he could, but he ran through the streets of Central City. He had moved there from Floral Forest Village with Cream and Vanilla. It had taken a lot of getting used to. There wasn’t as much free space to run around, and he couldn’t run as fast as he wanted because of all the people he now shared the city with. Well, that and the fact that if he ran as fast as he could, it’d probably send a strong enough signal to alert anyone with a good enough sensor to his location. Whether that’d be G.U.N. or Robotnik or anyone else, it most likely wouldn’t be a good thing. He’d probably get locked up and experimented on to try and figure out why he could run as fast as he did. Which, truthfully, he didn’t know himself, He just kind of ran, and it was fast.
Life had changed surprisingly little since Dr. Ivo Robotnik had declared ‘war’ and attempted to take over the world, or at least it changed little for regular civilians, like him. Despite living in a major city, life was basically normal. G.U.N. had managed to keep most cities safe from most of Robotnik’s robots, small towns did not have as much luck. Some were able to keep his robots at bay, others were simply deemed not useful enough to take control over. Either way, Sonic was thankful he had moved before it all started.
Though Sonic couldn’t help but feel a bit bad for those who were less fortunate than him and had their homes taken over by the Doctor. He often wished he could do more, or at least something to help them. But what could he do? He was a 14 year old hedgehog who lived a comfortable life in a protected area. He had heard word of a ‘Resistance’, who fought back against Robotnik and reclaimed area he had conquered, much to the dislike of G.U.N., who insisted that civilians not get involved in government affairs and that they should leave it up to the military. That didn’t stop the Resistance though, as they would continue to fight back against Robotnik, to mediocre success, but it was definitely better than nothing, in Sonic’s opinion at least.
Sonic had considered joining the Resistance. He’d always wanted to help people. And fighting back against Robotnik would be pretty cool. He was actually pretty decent at fighting too. He had practiced a lot in his own time, just in case something were to happen. But he still had absolutely no idea where to sign up or if they even recruited. And he also had a family to stay with and help. So it was a no on the Resistance. For now.
Sonic simply continued his run through the streets at a moderate pace. He really wished he could run faster, taking it slow felt like torture. He’d have to ask Vanilla if they could go back to Floral Forest sometime so he could finally run to his heart’s desire. But that would definitely have to wait for a bit, at least until the whole Robotnik business was over.
He had no real plan as to where he was going, he never did. He just ran and eventually the fun came to him, or he just gave up and went back home to try again another day. Now it was looking to be the latter. Despite being the largest city in the United Federation, Central City had surprisingly little stuff to do, according to Sonic, at least. The city actually had a lot of stuff to do, just nothing Sonic found interesting, mostly because the one thing he found the most interesting was running, which he couldn’t do.
Though Sonic eventually slows his pace a bit. Despite how much he loved running, walking was nice too. Really just getting to move at all was nice. He always had a need to move, probably came with being able to run at super speeds. He probably hadn’t ever stood still for 5 minutes without any movement.
Sonic sighed, putting his hands into the pockets of his jacket as he continued his stroll around the city. He had only been out for a few minutes and he was already incredibly bored. He wished he wasn’t constrained to the city. He knew it was for his and everyone else’s safety, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Matter of fact he despised it. He’d do basically anything for a little bit of action right now, any type of action. Anything at all.
And his prayers would be answered, but probably in the worst way possible as he suddenly heard a loud yell not too far away from him. And, with his lack of proper survival instinct, Sonic quickly spun around on his heel towards the direction of the yell and quickly dashed after it, still not nearly his top speed, not even close actually, but fast enough to get him there quickly.
Sonic quickly skidded to a stop, flailing his arms around in the air to regain his balance. Sonic’s ears quickly perked up at the sight in front of him; several robots flying and walking around, firing laser blasts and terrorizing citizens as they tried to flee to safety.
Despite Central City being protected by G.U.N., Dr. Robotnik sometimes managed to sneak in a couple of his robots. It was never too much for G.U.N. to deal with, but they still had to show up, and until then the robots were free to wreak havoc as they pleased.
Sonic knew what he was supposed to do. He had undergone the process many times; he was supposed to find the nearest, safest hiding spot and stay quiet until the G.U.N. personnel stationed in the city showed up. Which was what he planned on doing, before he decided otherwise. He didn’t know if it was because he had been thinking a lot about the Resistance recently or whatever. But he decided that it was time to put those fighting skills he had practiced in his backyard to the test.
Was it stupid and reckless? Yes. Was he going to be in heinous amounts of trouble after it? Definitely, without a doubt, yes. Was he going to do it anyway? Absolutely. Because what was Sonic the Hedgehog if not stupid, reckless and great at getting into trouble?
Sonic cracked his knuckles as he mentally prepared himself and after taking a deep breath, Sonic dashes towards one of the robots, jumping into the air and curling himself into a ball before he homes onto the robot, quickly shooting himself into it, breaking the robot with surprising ease. Sonic lands back on the ground, blinking a few times as if trying to comprehend what had just happened, but doesn’t get much time to think about it as a laser blast shoots towards him, to which the hedgehog narrowly dodged under, quickly whipping his head around to look at the robot who shot at him and repeating the same action he just did, homing attacking into the robot and breaking it just as he did with the previous one.
“Whoa… This is actually kinda fun…” Sonic said to himself, but once again didn’t get much time to think as he had to dodge out of the way of another blast, homing attacking into the other robots now surrounding him, bouncing between them like a pinball, once again landing back on the ground and holding the side of his head, slightly dizzy from all his bouncing around.
Sonic continued to dodge out of any attacks coming his way, preparing himself to attack the last the robot but doesn’t get the chance as he heard a gunfire from behind it, the robot falling limp on the ground in front of him, revealing an armored soldier behind him, a patch on his uniform that Sonic recognizes as G.U.N., and the the realization of what he was suddenly hit him, but, as to what seemed to be a trend at this point, doesn’t get much time to think about it as several more G.U.N. soldiers walked towards him, one of them grabbing him by the scruff of his neck, causing him let out a surprised yelp
“Hey! Ow! What the hell are you doing!?” Sonic exclaimed, squirming around and flailing his arms and legs around in the air while trying to break free from the soldiers grip
The soldier, however, simply ignored him, holding up what seemed to be some type of radio up against his face as he spoke “Situation cleared. Robotnik robots down with minor issues.” He said, a few seconds went by before another voice was heard from the otherside of the radio, the words being incomprehensible for Sonic, however
“Another one intervening. Mobian hedgehog. Blue. Maybe around 14-15 years old. No similar instances previously.” The soldier continued.
Some more unheard words came from the radio and the soldier sighed, carrying Sonic out of the area, completely ignoring the hedgehog’s attempts at escape. He eventually sets him back down on the ground, but keeps a firm hold on one of Sonic’s shoulders to make sure he doesn’t try and escape
“Look, kid. What you did was incredibly dumb and dangerous, You could’ve been seriously hurt. Civilians are supposed to stay out of this type of stuff.” He paused briefly, looking down at the ground and sighing before he looked back up at Sonic. “Normally, we’d call your parents and make sure you get a fitting punishment… But, since you did a surprisingly good job dealing with the robots… I’m willing to let you go with just a warning from me. You’ve got a real talent for destroying those machines… And maybe when you’re older you’ll be a good fit for G.U.N. But until then, let us handle this. We’ve got enough on our plates having to deal with that damn ‘Resistance’, as they call themselves, running around…”
Sonic, not really knowing what to say or how to respond, swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat and simply gave the soldier a quick nod, to which the soldier responded with a nod of his own. He sighed as he stood back up to his full height, dusting off his uniform a bit before he walked off, saying some intelligible words into his radio.
Sonic simply stared into the soldiers back as he walked away. Finally getting some time to take in everything that had just happened. He blinked a few times, a quiet, shocked and kind of relieved sigh leaving his lips and he remained standing still for the most part of five minutes before he finally regained his composure
“What the hell… That was awesome…” He muttered to himself, a small chuckle escaping his lips and ran hand through his, now disheveled, quills. He never knew destroying a bunch of robots could be so fun, and the fact that he had probably helped some people by doing it too only helped.
Sonic took a deep breath, spinning around on his heel before he ran off again. He had been out long enough and he didn’t want Vanilla or Cream to worry about him at all. And he had already just done the craziest thing in his life, so he thought he deserved to relax the rest of the day.
It didn’t take long for Sonic to arrive back at his house, he was pretty fast after all, even when he wasn’t going at his fastest. Maybe he could’ve tried to become the number one Olympic mobian sprinter. Though it’d be a bit unfair to the opponents.
Sonic, in his usual fashion, skidded to a stop in front of the front door to his house, quickly dusting himself off and attempting to fix his messy and dirty quills, not to much success, and he quickly gave up after just a few seconds.
Sonic opened the door and quietly entered the house, carefully closing the door behind him, not wanting to alert Vanilla and Cream that he was home. It wasn’t that he didn’t want them to welcome him back or anything, he just didn’t want to be bombarded with questions from Vanilla about where he’d been or why he suddenly looked so disheveled. Explaining that one would be sure to give him the lecture of a lifetime. Which he’d definitely not enjoy.
And luckily for Sonic, once the hedgehog had quietly tip-toed into the house and took a quick peek into the living room, he saw that both Vanilla and Cream had fallen asleep on the couch while watching some movie, so he thankfully wouldn’t have to deal with explaining himself. And when he woke up tomorrow he could blame the messy quills on his bedhead. It was a foolproof plan really.
Sonic sighed as he made his way up the stairs, still being careful to not wake either of the rabbits and he soon enough made his way up to his room, closing the door behind him and quickly flopping down on his bed. It was a race car bed. Maybe a bit childish, sure, but he had picked it out when he was younger and really hadn’t bothered to change it since then. Besides, he liked it. Race cars were fast. And according to Sonic, anything that was fast, was also cool. The bed was also surprisingly comfortable to sleep in so he wasn’t going to change it any time soon.
