The edge of Snowdin, where the icy cavern stops and Waterfall begins. It is blanketed with white fog, obscuring even the river carrying ice over towards the CORE.
Not that this was a concern for the young human, vacant expression as always, for they were caught at the tail end of a fierce battle with Papyrus, the skeleton monster who had been trying to capture them.
Their SOUL dragged down by his blue attack, they had just avoided having to deal with Papyrus's 'special attack'. That should be it.
It wasn't. Instead, Papyrus stood bold, still ready for more.
"Human! You may have bypassed my special attack, but I have one more trick up my sleeve! sans!"
Papyrus's brother, sans, slides onto the battlefield next to Papyrus. Not walking or even leaping in. Sliding, his legs and body otherwise motionless.
"' 'sup." His voice is casual and nonchalant.
"I will tell you what is up! Now we will defeat the human with our patented-"
"That was a hassle to do." sans states in an aside.
"BROTHERS COMBO ATTACK!!" Papyrus points his finger in the air and a dramatic, if icy, wind bellows his already flowing scarf further.
"Aw yeah!" sans says, unaffected by the wind at all.
Papyrus turns his finger to his brother. "Now! sans! As we practiced!"
"Sure." sans turns his voice to the human. "Sorry pal, you're boned now!"
Papyrus groans at the terrible pun, but readies his stance regardless.
There is no attack. There is a pause instead. Complete silence except for Bonetrousle continuing to play (could only the human hear it?).
After a moment Papyrus breaks the silence.
"sans!"
"Papyrus."
"Start the attack!"
"Sure."
Another pause, as sans rummages through his coat pockets like he lost his keys.
"...uh, it turns out I left the G****r Blasters back at the house."
The human tilts their head. Did the name of sans's whatever-that-is get bleeped out like a cuss? Should they be concerned about language?
"What?! You left the..." Papyrus's voice is almost at a shout, his patience wearing thin. "Then go get them!"
"It's a long walk. It'd drag your fight out."
"L...LONG WALK?!" Papyrus is almost out of breath now. (Does he even have lungs, the human wondered?) "sans! Our house is only a screen away!"
"Traffic jam. I'd have to go the long way."
"D....don't make excuses you lazybones!! How is there-"
All three of them turn to look behind the human. There is indeed a traffic jam somehow. It seems to have been started by an Annoying Dog riding a toy car. The human didn't even know the Underground had cars until now. How did they get here with no roads?
"Oh. Huh. So there is. Dang! I had a date planned!" Papyrus's voice immediately calmed down to a casual, friendly tone.
"Oh, with who?" sans's voice has remained the same the entire time.
"The human."
"Huh. Gonna take them to Grillby's?"
"No, I was thinking the house."
"Neat."
Papyrus turned back to the human, passion returning to his voice. "Anyway! Human! Uh....Forget about the combo attack! Instead I will use a perfectly normal attack!"
As Papyrus spoke sans slide away the same way he came, leaving Papyrus and the human to finish their duel. That 'normal attack' turned out to be the most impressive one yet. But perhaps everyone already knows how that story goes...
