He liked to observe. He liked staying up late into the night, watching the stars, identifying planets and constellations while listening to his boyfriend practice.
Brett Yang has lived with Eddy Chen for 5 years, but only 7 months ago did they realize the stars weren’t just there to light up the night — they were there to be watched for hours, to talk under, to truly get to know each other.
Brett is pulled out of his thoughts when he hears the sliding glass door open behind him.
—“Spacing out again?” asked a voice he was already so used to hearing. Slowly, he felt the person approach, until arms wrapped around his waist.
—“Babe, it’s freezing. Let’s go inside, I’ll make you a coffee.”
—“Your coffee sucks, Eddy,” Brett said with a grin, and both laughed at the shorter one’s remark.
—“But if you want, you can just hold me until I feel warm.”
Brett turned around to look his boyfriend in the eyes. He liked that Eddy was taller — he felt like the space between his neck and shoulder was made for Brett’s head to rest there. Eddy tightened the hug and began playing with Brett’s hair.
—“I love you.”
—“I love you, Eddy.”
—“Why did it take us so long to realize it?”
—“I don’t think we didn’t realize it,” Brett said, pulling away slightly to point at the sky. “Our love was like the stars — even when they’re far away, we can still see and appreciate them.”
Eddy looked at his boyfriend with a soft smile. He was right. He had always been in love with Brett, and Brett with him. Maybe they hadn’t had romantic moments back then, but their love as friends had lasted — until it slowly became something deeper. They never stopped loving each other.
—“Are you going to kiss me, or just stare at me forever?”
—“Idiot.”
Eddy gave in and kissed his boyfriend — a tender, but honest kiss.
