Work Text:
Anything before seven in the morning is probably considered too early for anyone to be awake, but for Taiyo, his body clock has always allowed him to rise the sun began peaking out to the world. However it's never been a bother, and today is no different especially when the girl next to him is sound asleep.
Hibari, his former childhood friend, his first ever (and hopefully permanent? It's a bit too early for them to tell, but he almost hopes so) girlfriend, had begged for a sleepover "just like when we were kids." Even if the thought of sharing the same bed sent blood rushing to his face, it's a bit pathetic but Taiyo can usually never say no. Most would tease him for being considered weak to Hibari, which is the truth. It's not like he defends himself about it, Taiyo just finds it most embarrassing when he gets caught without realizing his own actions.
It's cold in the mornings and as he was expecting, the comforter is heavily shifted towards the side Hibari lays. Taiyo stifles a laugh. Even since they were children, she has a subconscious tendency to move around and hoard the blanket whenever they share the same bed during sleepovers. To others they might have found this a nuisance, but it's because it’s Hibari that he doesn’t mind as much as he should.
There's really nothing Taiyo can do except tug the blanket back so at least he can be warmer and it's much too early to do anything, so he lies there next to Hibari. It truly feels like the two of them children again with how they are both squeezed in the same bed without a care in the world. Except maybe Taiyo does care a little more than he would like to admit with the way his heart pounds a little louder in his ears than he's realizes. Then again, it almost does that whenever he's around Hibari, so it doesn't mean much.
Without anyone to talk to, he's left with his thoughts when irony strikes them. Despite being a person who loves mornings, Hibari’s not been able to wake up on her own, often needing a little help. A little assistance was needed and Taiyo's more than willing to help in any way he can. She's already and always has done so much for him, even if Hibari hasn't realized it. If Taiyo can repay in small ways without asking for anything, then waking his girlfriend is hardly a chore. It's a reward if anything because it's something only he's allowed to do.
Yet somehow, Hibari reminds him of mornings. Maybe it's from the way she sings and enjoys baking, but Hibari reminds him of birds chirping outside and pancakes topped with whipped cream and strawberries for breakfast. She’s like fluffy clouds with how pretty they appear with the sky when the sun dyes the world in shades of pinks and yellows and oranges. It’s early to be having poetic thoughts, but Taiyo has always been unintentionally a romantic at heart.
If he had to guess, it’s reaching seven o’clock, but Taiyo finds himself gazing at Hibari who’s still blissfully asleep. She’s very pretty despite her long hair having tangles and if he squints, there’s dried drool near the corner of her mouth. Maybe Taiyo should try waking her up now. Despite years of knowing each other, an effective method of waking Hibari has yet to be found. So for now, Taiyo tries it the way he always does with a quiet voice and a little shaking.
“Hii-chan,” he whispers, rocking her by the shoulders as gently as possible. “Do you want to wake up?”
As expected, she doesn't stirs, she hardly ever does at first. It takes a minute or so of light coaxing Hibari is unable to hear to begin with until she finally rustles not without a groan of refusal. Another moment until she finally awakes albeit still sleepy and bleary-eyed. Her words are slurred and when she calls for his name, it barely sounds like it.
“Good morning,” Taiyo says in a quiet voice despite the distance between them being nonexistent as they are practically nose to nose with one another.
“Good morning,” Hibari murmurs back. She hardly stirs when he reaches out to move a strand of hair from flying into her mouth.
It’s so easy to smile around her as Taiyo watches as the girl blinks and squints without her glasses on. At some point, Hibari gives up and slumps against the pillow.
“Five more minutes?” She pouts, and Taiyo knew that question was coming because she asks it every morning. "Please?" She adds despite it being unnecessary.
He’s biased and very much in love, so to him, Hibari sounds cute with anything whether it’s intentional or not. Not that Taiyo plans on saying no because his answers are always the same. “Five more.”
Hibari giggles like she’s won, but it’s really Taiyo who's winning because it means more time spent with the girl he loves most. Fortunately, today is a weekend, which means they can stay like this for as long as they want before Hibari's starts to crave breakfast. If Taiyo could, he would surprise her with breakfast but she insists that they make it together every single time so he doesn't really have any chances. One day, he will. Once he does, Taiyo knows he'll be able to witness the sweetest smile on the girl he holds most dear to him. It is too early for him to say that he truly loves her? He's sure to tell her as much as possible later in the day.
Right now, however, Hibari is yawning and asking for cuddles. Taiyo compiles wordlessly, holding the girl in his arms while she drifts away to sleep a while longer. His face feels warm so he tries to distract himself by allowing his fingers run through locks of pink hair, and everything in the world feels complete. There was never a hurry to wake up in the first place, Taiyo just likes the way his girlfriend is regardless of the hour. They have all the time in the world for more mornings between them.
