Lake stands on the stage in her undergarments and tries to hide her shaking hands. She tries to lift her head to meet the men in the crowd, but her gaze keeps going back to James. He was promoted in rank last week and was allowed to buy property now. James had set aside money for Lake years ago and she knew that tonight he’d win.
James’s stomach turned as he stared at his phone. It was because Adam, the boss, was about to call him. Because he was important enough for this call. It was pride It had to be. What other reason would he feel so sick? His hands shake as the phone rings, and he slides his thumb over the screen.
“Boss.” James says forcing his voice to remain strong.
“James.” Adam’s voice is deeper than James imagined it would be. “I am sending you and Lake to Athien.”
James’s eyebrows raise and his mouth parts. Sitting by the coast of Europe, Athien was one of the most loved countries in the world.
“I assume we will be attending the college then.” James says and he imagines Adam nodding.
“You will be enrolled in time for the new year.”
James wondered just how powerful Adam had to be to be able to sneak James and Lake into the most prestigious college in the world. Only fifty percent of the freshman class would graduate their senior year. The college would teach them how to reach their full potential of their powers
Lake’s ability to take other’s sight would help James and his father strip the sanity from their victims, while stripping away Lake’s as well. James’s ability to turn what he touches to glass, including other humans, would be dangerously useful.
“I heard you won the auction on Lake.” Adam says. James knew that auctioning women was standard, that he won fairly, but Adam was Lake’s father and that was uncharted territory. “I expect that you’ll keep her on a tight leash.”
Lake’s never been an issue.” James says and Adam gives a sick laugh.
“Neither was her mother until she ran.”
“I understand.” James says into the phone speaker.
“I congratulate you for winning my daughter.” Adam says and James grins slowly. Lake was a prize to be won. For looks, power, and her rank in the organization.
“Thank you, sir. I assure you that I will keep Lake in check, and I thank you for inviting me to this meeting. It’s been an honor.”
“Do not disappoint me.” Adam says and ends the call.
