Work Text:

Amalia was in her first day of second grade with Ms. Smith, her new teacher.

“Good morning everybody!” Ms. Smith said, with a big smile. A couple kids said ‘good morning’ back, but most of them were shy and didn’t say anything. Amalia, though said ‘good morning’ back.

“A way that I like to introduce everyone on the first day is we draw family portraits and if we want to, we can share some with the class,” she paused and looked around for a second. “How does that sound?” The class seemed to like this idea, so Ms. Smith started handing out the crayons and papers.

Amalia immediately got to work. First she drew her Daddy. She gave him a red button down shirt with a gray bow tie and gray pants. She drew his hair dark brown and made little coils to represent his curly hair.

Next to him she drew her Papa with a black turtle neck, she didn’t know what it was called, but her dad wore it a lot, then she gave him navy blue jeans, she drew his hair lighter than her Daddy’s and straighter but made it tall-ish on his head.

Next she decided to draw her two little brothers Alex had hair like her papa’s and Ashton had Blonde hair. She Alex a blue shirt with green short and Ashton an orange shirt with light blue shorts.

She of course drew her herself in the middle, in between her dads. She drew her long, straight, dark brown hair and a light pink sweater with light blue jeans.

Next to her she drew her sister, Tracy. Tracy had long, curly, dark brown hair. She gave her a yellow t-shirt and black leggings. Amalia added her dog, Ruthie. Ruthie was a small black dog who was around three years old.

When the timer went off Amalia bounced up and down with anticipation. She was so excited to share her family portrait.

“Alright, that’s the timer,” said Ms. Smith turning it off. “Who would like to share?” Amalia’s hand shot up immediately, a long with a couple other kids.

“How about… Brandon?” Amalia shrunk in disappointment as Brandon stood up from where he sat next to her and brought up his paper, and put it under the projector.

“Uhhh. So this is my family,” He said pointing to the paper. “That’s my older brother, Jacob, that’s my mom and my dad and that’s my bulldog, Kash.” He then took his paper and walked back to his desk next to Amalia.

“Thank you Brandon,” Ms. Smith said, with a big smile. “Any questions?” No one raised their hand. “Okay then. Would anyone else like to share?” Amalia raised her hand impatiently. “Amalia? Would you like to share?”

Amalia nodded excitedly and shot up out of her seat to place her paper under the projector.

“Hi, everyone. I’m Amalia and this,” she said, pointing to her drawing. “is my family.”

She moved her finger to point to her Daddy, “This is my daddy. He has really crazy curly hair like my sister’s, my uncle calls him ‘curly B’ because it’s so curly,” Amalia smiled remembering how embarrassed her daddy was after that nickname, “And this is my papa. He and my daddy are married obviously. So that’s why I gave him that wedding ring.” She looks over to Ms. Smith who is giving her an encouraging smile. “This of course is me. Next to me is my two little brothers who are twins, Ashton, but we call him Ash, and Alexander, but we call him Alex. They’re both five. And they’re in kindergarten with Ms. Ellis.”

Ms. Smith smiles even more and says, “Oh that’s great Amalia,”

“Then this is my older sister, Tracy. She didn’t have you, Ms. Smith. She had Ms. McDonald. She’s in fourth grade now. And she has hair like my daddy’s just longer. And last but not least, my puppy, Ruthie. She usually sleeps in my daddy and papa’s room but sometimes she’ll cuddle with me at night. She’s a really good cuddle puppy.” Amalia turns and looks around. “That’s it!”

Ms. Smith gets up and walks toward Amalia, “Any questions for Amalia?” A couple people raised their hands. “Olivia?”

Olivia smiled and said, “What’s your older sister’s name again? My older sister is in fourth grade too, so she might know her.”

“Her name is Tracy,” Amalia said.

Ms. Smith noticed the silenced and asked if there were any other questions, “Brandon?”

Brandon stood up  and said, “Your parents are ugly, sick faggots.”

Ms. Smith immediately said, “Brandon! You can’t say that! That is rude and disrespectful!” Amalia’s eyebrow’s furrowed, she didn’t know what that meant.

Brandon, unfazed, continued, “It’s true,” he looked back to Amalia. “Amalia, your parents are faggots. Fags. Faggots. Faggots. Faggots. Faggots,” he repeated.

Ms. Smith went up Brandon and yelled. “Brandon! Go to the principal’s office!” Brandon left the room after Ms. Smith called the office and wrote him a pass.

“I’m so sorry Amalia,” Ms. Smith said, sincerely.

Amalia didn’t want to say she didn’t know what it meant, so she just said, “It’s fine Ms. Smith.” Ms. Smith nodded and continued her lesson and it left Amalia curious the rest of the day.

By the end of the day Amalia had befriended Olivia who she didn’t really know last year and was glad to be making new friends.

“That’s the bell class! Time to go home to your parents,” Ms. Smith smiled. “Your parents and the buses are waiting right outside! See you all tomorrow!”

Right before Amalia was about to leave, she ran up to Ms. Smith and gave her a hug, “See you tomorrow Ms. Smith.”

“See you tomorrow dear,” Ms. Smith said softly.

Amalia disconnected from her teacher and ran out of the classroom where Tracy was waiting for her.

“How was your first day, Moli” Tracy asked. ‘Moli’ was a nickname that only her family used.

“It was good. I made a new friend, her name is Olivia and she said her sister’s name is ‘Lexi’ do you know a Lexi?” Amalia asked as she made her way to the kindergarten hallway.

“Yeah. She’s really nice. But we haven’t talked yet,” Tracy responded.

“Trace! Moli!” They turned to see both of their brothers running towards them.

Ash hugged Amalia and Alex hugged Tracy.

“Hey guys, how was your first day?”  Tracy asked.

“Oh my god it was amazing!” Ashton exclaimed.

“Yeah! It’s so big around here and there is so many people!” Alex added.

“Well I think Daddy and Papa are waiting for us in the car so we should go meet them,” Amalia said.

They walking down the hall holding each others hands with Alex between Amalia and Tracy and Ashton on the other side of Tracy.

“There’s daddy and papa!” Ashton shouted, pointing to where their dads were waiting near their black minivan.

“Daddy!” Alex yelled detaching his hand from his sister and run towards his dad. As he ran, he dad crouched down with his hands out, Ashton jumped into his daddy’s arms and his dad caught him and picked up.

Ashton did a similar thing ending up in his Papa’s arm.

Once Tracy and Amalia reach them, they get in the car and drive home.

Once they’re home the kids are doing their separate things. The twins in the living room watching tv on the couch together. Tracy up in her room. And Amalia in the kitchen on the island counter working on a drawing.

Kurt and Blaine walk into the kitchen after checking in on Ashton and Alex in how their day was.

“Hi Daddy, hi Papa,” Amalia says after she sets down her crayons.

“Hi baby. How was your first day of second grade?” Her daddy ask running his fingers through her hair.

“Oh it was so good! Ms. Smith is the best teacher ever! And I made a new friend!” Amalia responded grinning from ear to ear.

“Oh sweetheart, that’s amazing,” her papa says.

“One kid got sent to the office because of me,” her dads looked confused. “Not like I did anything, he just said something to me. I think it was mean. I didn’t know what it meant but Ms. Smith yelled at him to go to the office.”

Blaine looks at Kurt, “What did he say?”

“Well I drew a family portrait and shared it with the class. I drew you two, Ashton, Alex, Tracy, me, and Ruthie. And he raised his hand and said that you two were disgusting, sick, and ugly faggots and fags.”

Kurt froze.

Blaine froze.

After a while Kurt broke and started to cry. He could hold it in anymore.

“Papa? What did I do?” Amalia asks, concerned.

Blaine looks over to her scared face, “Nothing. You did absolutely nothing at all. But daddy and papa need to have an adult talk, okay?”

“Okay, daddy,” Amalia said picking up her crayon. She felt her dad kiss her forehead and then both of them left to the master bedroom.

In the master bedroom Kurt was crying and Blaine was guiding his husband to the bed, after they had gotten settled on the bed with Kurt’s head resting on Blaine’s chest.

“I know baby. I know,” Blaine said, running his fingers through Kurt’s hair. “Let it all out.”

After a while Kurt and Blaine decided to call Tracy and Amalia into their room, know that Ashton and Alex were a bit too young.

“Daddy why are we here? And why do both of you look like you’ve been crying?” Tracy asked.

“Earlier today a boy in Amalia’s class called the two of us a a very bad word,” Blaine said rubbing Kurt’s lower back.

“The word is ‘faggot’. And I’m not saying it again and I don’t want to hear either of you say it. Ever,” Blaine warned.

“You know how Papa and I are gay? We are two mean in love with each other. And Aunt Santana and Auntie Brit are also gay?” Blaine started. After receiving two nods he continued. “That word is a really bad word for gay people like us. People who use that word don’t like that we love each other.”

“Why would they like that? I like having two dads?” Tracy furrowed her eyebrows.

“I don’t know sweetheart. But I know that we both love you. And if anyone says that again, please tell me or papa or any adult. Okay?”

“Okay.” Both girls said.
