He Xuan is a pretty chill guy. He does not mind a lot of things, unless it is offensive to either himself or the people he cares about. That was what helped blossom the friendship between him and the bubbly girl he met during his university days, Shi Qingxuan. Their relationship later became a romantic one, and they tied the knot after they graduated. Now, he is happily married for close to 8 years, being no stranger to her likes and dislikes. The one thing he knows Qingxuan loves is watching Korean dramas, or Kdramas for short. Almost every week at night, he will see Qingxuan cuddled up on the sofa, invested in some Kdrama episode. This usually ends with her sharing her thoughts with him before they sleep. He would patiently listen to her ramble about the plot, but start feeling lost after a few minutes in.

While He Xuan respects Qingxuan’s love for Kdramas, he still has little idea what is their appeal. His only impression is that the story is dramatic, there may be many plot twists or secrets revealed. And most seem to be about romance. After all, He Xuan is not the one watching, he does not get the first-hand experience of the other exciting parts. The one tiny exposure he got was from the time he learnt how to sing My Destiny by Lyn. Of course, He Xuan does not know Korean, so he sang the Mandarin version of the song by Jeff Chang. Besides Jeff Chang being a familiar singer to him, He Xuan only knew the Kdrama was about some alien. He chose to sing it for their wedding because Qingxuan was so in love with that song back then. Other than that, he has not much idea about the shows.

But one night, he suddenly had the urge to find out more about Kdramas. It came to him so abruptly, he initially wondered if he got brainwashed by Qingxuan. After she finished her sharing and they said “Goodnight” to each other, the thought just popped in his head. He Xuan wondered, if I watch some Kdramas, maybe I might understand why she loves them so much. Putting the thought aside, he decided to ask her about this another time and went to sleep.

The following day, He Xuan asked her about Kdramas to watch during dinnertime.

“Eh?!” Qingxuan exclaimed, chopsticks with the fried tofu an inch away from her mouth.

“I said, I’m interested in watching Kdramas. Any recommendations?” he replied while gently guiding the fried tofu to her mouth before continuing. “I just want to see what’s the appeal.”

“B-but, you NEVER had an interest in them before. What happened?”

“Is it that strange that I want to try them out?” he chuckled.

“SURE IS! I thought you prefer watching documentaries? Did you hit your head earlier?”

“I did not. I just want to try something new.”

Qingxuan gasped. Her hubby wants to try Kdramas? Even if he never really enjoyed watching them? What news!

Recovering from her shock, Qingxuan quickly promised to introduce a site for watching Kdramas. A radiant smile stayed on her face for the rest of the night.

For He Xuan, he is just happy that he made his wife’s day, or night for that matter.

Chapter 2: Oh how the tables have turned

After downloading the app Shi Qingxuan introduced to him, He Xuan started his search for Kdramas.

“Twinkling Watermelon…sounds interesting…” He clicked on the first episode after reading the synopsis.

…

Qingxuan found her husband on the sofa, already starting on a show. What a sight to behold! The man who never touched Kdramas is already deep in one, and it has not been two days since she introduced him to the app.

“Woah woah, you’re already on episode 2?!” Qingxuan poked her head from behind his shoulders.

“Yeah. Apparently this show is about a highschooler who is the only one who can hear while his parents and older brother are deaf. He loves playing music and learnt how to play the guitar from an old man, but the old man died.”

“Oh wow, that’s a lot for a start!” Qingxuan had never seen this one, but her curiosity went up after the short summary by her hubby. She decided to watch this one with her husband.

Days went by and they finally finished this emotional rollercoaster of a Kdrama. Qingxuan is left with teary eyes while He Xuan also kept quiet after the last episode ended.

“I did not expect this to be so emotional.” He Xuan mused.

“ME TOO!” Qingxuan sobbed into the tissue her hubby gave her.

Qingxuan really thought her hubby would be done after one drama. Boy, she was so wrong. After showering, she found He Xuan watching another Kdrama.

“Wait! Didn’t we just finish a drama three days ago?”

He Xuan looked up from the screen, looking as though he was caught red-handed.

“Ah…well I found another show. It looked interesting.” He Xuan replied awkwardly. He really did not expect himself to start a new show so quickly too, but it was as though the new Kdrama was calling out to him. “This one is called Strong Girl Bong-soon.”

Qingxuan was about to jump to the sky. HER HUSBAND, WATCHING THIS SHOW?! Did the sun rise from the west today? She used to chase this show years ago, excitedly chatting with her friends about the plot every time a new episode came out. My oh my, Qingxuan was starting to believe in what her married friend said about learning new things regarding her partner every day.

Soon enough, He Xuan reached the last episode. To him, this drama sure did not hold back on the comedy. It had been a while since he watched so hilarious. Though, he admitted some bits felt a little silly since some problems could be resolved very quickly. Maybe the characters had to be a little foolish to up the tension. All in all, he enjoyed the show.

…

Alright, this is getting out of hand. Qingxuan thought to herself.

Just days after finishing Strong Girl Bong-soon, He Xuan was on another Kdrama. Whatever happened to her disciplined hubby? Gone, deep down in the rabbit hole. What was funnier was He Xuan finding Kdramas she had not watched before.

Qingxuan scooched up next to He Xuan, peeking at the screen. “Family by Choice, what’s this about?”

He Xuan immediately went into explanation mode, “It’s about this man who runs a small restaurant. He is a father figure to these three children, only the girl is his biological daughter. The two boys were abandoned by each of their mothers. The common thing among the children is they don’t have mothers.”

“Oh wow. So they are raised by him and him alone? That’s a lot for one man.” Qingxuan commented.

“Actually the oldest one still has his father staying with them. Just that his father is a patrol officer so he is constantly out of the house.”

“I see…”

Qingxuan wondered if she should bring up the fact that He Xuan was deep down in Kdrama land. It sure seemed like the right time, after watching her hubby already complete 2 Kdramas and in the midst of another.

What am I so afraid of? He’s my hubby! Silly me. Qingxuan thought.

“Um dear…” Qingxuan decided to go for it. Just to point out how quick it was to get He Xuan into something he never touched in his life before. Well, at least they can look back at how the tables have turned and laugh together.
