Work Text:
Sometimes Sara wonders what it’s like, to kill.
There’s something that sets the three successful assassins apart — Booth, Czolgosz, even Guiteau, all carry themselves differently than the rest of them. They know they are respected.
Sara often feels that no one respects her. Sometimes people do, but it’s few and far between. Certainly, no one outside of the carnival. She is needed, in some cases, sure, but not respected.
Sometimes she thinks about what it would be like, if she had the right gun. If she had succeeded. Sure, she might be a bit repulsed at how much blood a human body had in it, but she would have power. And she’d be respected. No, more than that, she’d be a hero. A champion of the leftist cause. Didn’t matter that no one had told her that’s what needed to happen. They’d realize it was the right thing to do all along.
At that point, she’d stop herself. Sara Jane Moore is not a bloodthirsty woman. She is simply a practical one.
Still, she wonders what it’s like. What makes the three successful ones carry themselves in such a particular way. What it’s like, to make them all focus on you and only you. No stupid FBI agent or kid or husband or mother to get in her way, just her name, engraved into everyone’s mind.
She can see the headlines in her mind. San Francisco Housewife Kills Gerald Ford. Suspect Identified as Sara Jane Moore. Sara Jane Moore Assassinates President. Sara Jane Moore Questioned and Tells All. Sara Jane Moore Championed by Left. Sara Jane Moore, Woman Credited for Sparking Revelations that have Gripped the Country.
Sara is aware that she’ll never know that. Those headlines exist only in her imagination. Still, she got what she wanted, didn't she? Partially, at least. She’s here now, surrounded by people who, though she often feels alienated from, are like her. They know the disappointment of missing. They know what it feels like to have the burning anger that lives in her gut. They know the feel of a trigger beneath their finger.
She sees the Balladeer out of the corner of her eye.
And, well. She’ll find out soon what it’s like, won’t she?
