Work Text:

Against all odds, Connor and Daniel had gone from academic rivals to boyfriends. Prom rolled around and the couple mutually agreed not to go. Connor saw no appeal to it and Daniel thought the whole concept was lame.

Though, as Daniel’s adoptive mother dragged him along to get Simon a suit for prom - an experience the twins couldn’t have even fathomed just a few years ago - she mentions that Daniel needs to decide on a suit soon too and the more angsty of the twins lets it slip that he’s not going. Their mother refuses to accept that and makes Daniel go in order to socialize. They leave the store with two suits, a beaming blond, and a scowling blond.

The next day, Daniel whines to Connor about being forced to go to prom and Connor agrees to go with him, if not just to give him company. Connor gets himself a suit and the night of prom both twins are being stopped by their parents to get pictures with their boyfriends before each couple is allowed to leave.

Simon and Markus made quick work of getting lost in the crowd and Daniel and Connor were left to themselves.

They stood around and hung out for a while before giving in to what everyone else was doing and trying to dance. It became quickly apparent that neither knew what they were doing, both trying to lead and stumbling into each other.

They settled on clasping one of their hands together as their other hand rested on the other’s waist. Daniel leaned against Connor and the brunet lost his balance, stepping on Daniel’s foot as he regained his footing.

The blond exclaimed at the incident and Connor profusely apologized before they attempted to dance again.

This time, they swayed side to side long enough that it felt awkward and like they’d have to move. Daniel took a step back and Connor took a step forward. Daniel stepped to the side and Connor stepped with him. Daniel stepped to the side again and Connor stepped forward at the same time, this time Daniel’s foot landing on top of the other’s.

The blond mumbled an apology and they moved back to swaying until they had the confidence to try moving again. Connor stepped back and Daniel stepped forward. Connor stepped to the side, but Daniel was a step ahead and got his foot stepped on once more.

Daniel exclaimed at the action again and broke away from Connor in a frustrated huff. He stalked towards the snack table with his boyfriend on his heels. When he reached the table, Daniel grabbed a handful of popcorn and stuffed it in his mouth. After a while of chewing, he grabbed a mini sandwich and ate about half of it in one bite. He grumbled out words as he chewed it, “I hate dancing.”

Connor rubbed a hand over Daniel’s back. He tried to keep his voice soothing to calm his fiery boyfriend, “We don’t have to dance. We can just find somewhere to sit and hangout until this is over.”

Daniel wasn’t done with his tirade. “I hate this stupid dance and this stuffy suit and all the stupid people here. It’s just the fucking school trying to seem cool by playing bad music and expecting couples not to dirty dance and catering to all the preppy kids with their school spirt .” The last words were spat with disdain and followed by Daniel shoving the other half of his sandwich in his mouth to angrily chew.

Knowing the other well enough to know not to add fuel to the fire, Connor grabbed them some drinks and looked around for someplace they could go. He beamed as his eyes fell on something and he subtly gestured to it. In the corner of the room, a photo wall had been set up. Though, the decorative wall was on a divider and a surplus of balloons made it so that the photo wall had to be a few feet away from the actual wall. The gap there would be the perfect spot - away from the activities of prom and private.

Daniel followed where Connor was looking and a grin twitched at his lips. He nodded in the direction of the hiding spot but hesitated as Connor started heading that way. He scanned over the snack table before deciding on grabbing a mostly-intact charcuterie board and following after his boyfriend.

The couple situated themselves against the wall in the corner and Daniel set the snack platter down to wrangle his way out of his suit jacket. Tossing it aside, he pulled at his bowtie with furrowed eyebrows until it came undone and hung loosely around his neck. He undid the top few buttons of his shirt before settling back with Connor and much more casually undid the buttons on his sleeves and shoved them up to his elbows. He reached forward to grab his snacks and placed the board in his lap before slumping and leaning against Connor.

Connor smiled affectionately and turned his head to press a kiss to blond hair. There was a hint of amusement in his voice as he spoke, “Better?”

Daniel’s grin was clear. “Much.”

“Well, good.” Connor paused before adding, “My Danny Boo is no fun when he’s all riled up and grumpy.”

Daniel pouted at the embarrassing pet name and comment. “Shut up.” He leaned his body weight against Connor to playfully nudge him.

Connor grinned. “Aww, my Baby’s upset.”

Daniel rolled his eyes and ignored the other, knowing he’d only goad him on further. Instead, he picked at his charcuterie board, stacking cheese and salami together before popping it in his mouth.

It was Connor’s turn to pout as he realized his fun teasing was over. He picked a slice of cheese off Daniel’s board and nibbled at it.

The two would fall into a comfortable silence for a while, listening to mostly-bad music and enjoying their snacks as they basked in each other’s company. The quiet bubble would only be popped as Daniel softly spoke, “I love you. You always know how to calm me down.” He gestured to their hiding spot.

Connor smiled. “It’s the least I could do. I don’t like you being upset.”

Daniel matched his smile as he turned to face Connor. There was a wordless exchange between them then they were leaning in for a brief press-of-lips kiss. They broke apart and grins quickly turned to giggles.

They chatted and teased and poorly sang along to the occasional song to pass the time as they waited for prom night to end. By time the final song rolled around, their charcuterie board was finished and they’d shared more than a few more kisses. Sure, neither had really wanted to be there and dancing had been an absolute failure, but prom as a whole had been pretty fun with just the two of them.
