Recovered Correspondences

Summary:

Have you ever wondered what everyone else was saying about Violet and Xaden during the events of Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm? Ever wondered about the content of some of those “recovered correspondences” and missives? This fic is for you.

Notes:

This fic is a gift written for Aspensquake in the Rider’s Quadrant Discord! Aspen wanted an outside POV of Violet and Xaden’s relationship as it developed over the three books that we have, and noted that she might enjoy a fic in partial or total epistolary form. And thus, “Recovered Correspondences” was born! Aspen, it has been a JOY getting to write this for you, and I hope you love it!

Now for some explanation:
This fic will be a mix of unsent and sent letters. To remain consistent with how letters are captioned in the epigraph, unsent letters will be noted as “recovered, unsent correspondence of ___ to ____” and SENT letters will simply be noted as “recovered correspondence of ___ to ___”
Letters from different characters within the same chapter will be separated by a line break, — — — and another line break. This will make more sense as you read the fic!
Due to breaking up chapters between sections of each book, these chapters will be pretty short!

Beginning of chapter artwork was created by the lovely Anna (theoneiam2277) who is FANTASTIC!

Asher,

While I do not regret this decision, I am sorry, my love. I am sorry that I did not make the decision sooner, if only to allow her more time to prepare her body for the trials she will face. Her mind will not be the problem - I have no doubt that a green could value her intelligence and choose her, much like Teine chose Mira. Surprisingly, I feel I have more faith in Violet than Mira does. Likely because I refuse to acknowledge any trepidation or fears regarding her ability to survive until Threshing. I merely pray that Dunne will guide her, and keep her from Malek’s clutches. I have no doubt that I will find Lewis at my office door tomorrow, demanding an explanation. I am too tired to play this game of politics. I am tired of pretending that I still trust him. I am tired of faking professionalism when I see the face of your murderer. I refuse to let him take Violet from me the way he took you.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL ASHER SORRENGAIL

— — —

Bren,

Gods, I miss you. I wish you were here to talk Mom out of this madness. She would have listened to you. She said that Violet is the most capable of the three of us, the most likely to make it through the Quadrant, because she deals with more pain before lunch than I do in an entire week. But it’s not the pain tolerance I’m worried about. It’s not even the constant exposure to death that worries me. She’s been training to be a scribe her entire life, only for it all to be upended six months ago because our mother is… batshit crazy? Unhinged? A sadist? All of the above? Our mother is immune to feelings and emotions. I’ll admit to becoming callous myself. But Violet? I’m worried about how she’ll cope with the indifference of it all.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT BRENNAN SORRENGAIL

— — —

Colonel,

I have serious concerns regarding a cadet in my squad who was forced to join the Rider’s Quadrant

I would like to formally make a plea for leniency compassion basic human decency on behalf of Cadet Violet Sorrengail…

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS TO COLONEL CASIMIR AETOS

Colonel,

I apologize for my frankness, but I come to you, not just as a squad leader, but as your son. I am pleading with you to urge General Sorrengail to reconsider her decision to force Violet into the Rider’s Quadrant…

You know I don’t ask you for anything, because what’s the point much. But Father, please . Watching her die will rip away what’s left of my heart.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS TO COLONEL CASIMIR AETOS

— — —

Squad Leader Aetos,

Let me save you the parchment before you inevitably embarrass yourself. In regards to General Sorrengail’s decree that Cadet Sorrengail join the Rider’s Quadrant, my hands are tied. Should you have any further concerns regarding Cadet Sorrengails’ fate, I suggest you direct them to Zihnal, or Dunne.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF COLONEL CASIMIR AETOS TO SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS

— — —

Colonel Markham,

I recognize that this is unusual, but I would like to formally request a meeting with you regarding an urgent matter. Please let me know of your availability at your earliest convenience.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS TO COLONEL LEWIS MARKHAM

— — —

Squad Leader Aetos,

My office hours for Scribe Quadrant cadets are tomorrow afternoon from 1400-1730. I will give you five minutes of my time after they end. Be at my office door at 1735.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF COLONEL LEWIS MARKHAM TO SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS

Notes:

>I had a HARD TIME trying to come up with a first name for Col. Aetos, SO I really hope that Rebecca Yarros has come up with an appropriately shitty name for this shitty person. Casimir is a Polish name meaning “destroyer of peace,” and honestly, I think that fits.
>Yes, I’ve written Brennan’s rank when Mira is writing to him as ‘Lieutenant.’ This is because she does not know that he is alive, and his last rank when he was last seen “alive” by Mira, during the battle of Aretia, was ‘Lieutenant.’

ALSO, a MASSIVE thank you to ellebellewritesfic for being (yet again!) an absolutely WONDERFUL Beta!!

Chapter 2: After Threshing

Summary:

My personal headcanon is that Xaden likely wouldn’t have informed Brennan of what was going on until Violet either died (which didn’t happen), or had bonded a dragon. And thus, this chapter came about!

Lieutenant Colonel Aisereigh,

I know that Xaden has already written to you as well, but considering the slightly delicate situation, I’m inclined to believe that he may have left some details out…

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF SECTION LEADER GARRICK TAVIS TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

— — —

Aisereigh,

I know you were expecting to receive a missive regarding how this year’s squad of Tyrrish cadets has fared up until now. I’m going to let Garrick handle that subject, you should be receiving a missive from him as well. Unfortunately, we have more pressing issues. True to form, the General has shown that she’s willing to put her own children at risk to further her own agenda. I regret to inform you that your youngest sister, Violet, was forced to join the Rider’s Quadrant instead of the Scribe Quadrant. She’s proven to be a fierce Cadet, despite her smaller stature. Honestly, she could give you a run for your money regarding her knowledge and usage of poisons. I apologize for not informing you of all of this sooner, but to be honest, none of us really knew how to address it. So here’s the summary of the past few months:

  • Your baby sister is kind of a badass.
  • She’s found her own, uniquely Violet way to pass every physical challenge thrown at her.
  • She is by far the smartest cadet at this whole godsdamned war college (I’m sure this comes as no surprise to you, given how much you talked about how brilliant she was growing up).
  • She bonded two dragons at Threshing yesterday. One of them is Tairn. The other is a golden feathertail named Andarna.
  • The double bonding is due to the fact that she bravely chose to defend Andarna against three asshole cadets about twice her size that had every intention of killing her and Andarna.
  • Again, your baby sister is kind of a badass.

I’m sure you have questions, and I’m more than willing to answer them the next time that Garrick and I are able to make it to Aretia. In the meantime, please believe me when I say that I will wholeheartedly guard your sister’s life with my own.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF WINGLEADER XADEN RIORSON TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

— — —

…And here’s where we get to why I’ve sent this letter after Xaden sent his. What I’m sure he hasn’t told you, is that because Tairn forms such deep bonds, his life and Violet’s are more interdependent than the bonds most dragons have with their riders. I don’t know how much experience you have with mated dragon pairs, but since Tairn and Sgaeyl are mated, and because Tairn does form such deep bonds, if Violet dies, Tairn likely will too, and then Sgaeyl, and then Xaden. So…Xaden’s life is now theoretically dependent on Violet’s. Which, honestly, might be a good thing for both Xaden and Violet. You know Xaden, he doesn’t like to depend on anyone except for himself. And he is fiercely protective of those closest to him, which now, by default, includes Violet. I don’t have any doubt that he will guard her life as closely as he guards his own, and Sgaeyl’s.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF SECTION LEADER GARRICK TAVIS TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

— — —

Riorson and Tavis,

The next time you head out to make a drop, I expect both of you to set aside time to stop by and meet with the Assembly on your way back to Basgiath. This is not optional.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO WINGLEADER XADEN RIORSON AND SECTION LEADER GARRICK TAVIS

— — —

Naolin,

I don’t know where you are, or if you found peace, but gods do I miss you. And now, I’m potentially going to have to deal with your grumpy ass curmudgeon of a dragon again , because Zihnal has a terrible sense of humor. My youngest sister, who is supposed to be in the godsdamned Scribe Quadrant…bonded Tairn. She’s in the fucking Rider’s Quadrant, and bonded your fucking dragon. Your dragon, the one who told Marbh a week after the battle that he’d lived almost 100 years without bonding a human, and he’d be happy to live another hundred with only Sgaeyl at his side. I’d face Tairn’s displeasure in a heartbeat though, if it meant I got to see Violet.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO LIEUTENANT NAOLIN SAVITIR

Notes:

>Hopefully the split in Garrick’s missive made sense!
>Yes, I totally just made up a surname for Naolin, BUT, not without reason. Naolin is the name of the Aztec sun god…so I did a quick search for the names of other sun gods and found Savitr, the Hindu god of the sun at sunrise and sunset. I added an extra “i” just to make it flow a bit more. Kinda like how Rebecca Yarros took the Scottish Gaelic word “aiseirigh,” which translates to “resurrect” or “resurrection” in English and altered it a bit for Brennan’s assumed last name/alias.
>I’m of the mind that Naolin was the rider “a couple years older than Brennan” that Brennan was in a relationship with when they both “died” in the battle of Aretia. So I made his rank the same as Brennan’s, Lieutenant. Considering Mira hadn’t advanced past Lieutenant (she did go from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant, but that’s never distinguished in the missives) in the three-ish years she’d been out of the Quadrant, I just went with Lieutenant for Naolin as well.

Chapter 3: Winter at Basgiath

Summary:

This chapter spans basically up through March of FW! Considering we actually had a snippet of a letter from Liam to Sloane given to us in an IF epigraph, I figured it would be rude NOT to include and expand upon it! But we also have a letter from Lilith...

Dear Sloane,

Gods I can’t wait til you’re here next year. There are so many people I want to introduce you to, but I know you’re going to be just as excited to see Imogen and Bodhi. Maybe Xaden and Garrick will come back for a visit and you’ll get to see them too! Actually, it’s pretty much a guarantee that at the very least, Xaden will come back, because he’ll kind of have to. Let me explain. I know I already wrote to you about Xaden’s dragon, Sgaeyl. Well, Sgaeyl is mated, to a really fucking big black dragon named Tairn. When I say really fucking big, I mean REALLY FUCKING BIG. Like, the second largest dragon on the continent BIG. You’ve already had the displeasure of meeting the only dragon larger than him, Codagh. Zihnal must be looking out for me, because I haven’t seen him , or his rider, since Threshing.

But, while we’re on the subject of Threshing, something…unexpected…happened. A cadet bonded two dragons, which, yes, is unheard of , but one of those dragons was Tairn. Professor Kaori told us in class that he hadn’t bonded since his last rider died from burnout in the Battle of Aretia, and wasn’t planning to bond this year. But he did. And now that rider’s life is bonded to his, but also to Xaden’s through Tairn’s mating bond with Sgaeyl. That rider is General Sorrengail’s youngest daughter, Violet.

I know you’re probably thinking, “what the actual fuck? Of all the people to be bonded to, Xaden’s bonded to a fucking SORRENGAIL?!” And believe me, we all had that same thought, Xaden included. However, there have been some…developments? I guess? Neither of them has ever confirmed this, but we’re pretty sure that Xaden and Violet have some mental bond, similar to that of the bond between a rider and their dragon, that allows them to speak mind to mind. I’m sure neither of them will ever confirm it, and we certainly won’t ask them, but we can’t even place bets on it because we all agree that’s exactly what’s going on. Which is a shame, because I really wanted to goad Bodhi into wagering some of his sweets.

Xaden’s moved me into Violet’s squad to basically be her bodyguard, after an incident with some unbonded first years, that ended with the six of them dead (killed by Xaden), and the wingleader who let them into Violet’s room roasted by Tairn at morning formation. It was a whole thing, and is definitely easier to explain in person, but essentially, she had a vendetta against Violet (go figure). And honestly, I can’t be mad at Xaden for putting me on guard duty, because I legitimately do enjoy getting to hang out with her. Don’t tell Xaden that I told you this, but I’m pretty sure that he enjoys hanging out with her too. You’re going to love Violet. She’s smart and stubborn. Reminds me a lot of you, actually. You just have to remember when you meet her: she’s not her mother.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET LIAM MAIRI TO SLOANE MAIRI

— — —

Asher,

Casimir has become increasingly more interested in your research about feathertails due to Violet bonding one during Threshing. Both Violet and I have feigned ignorance regarding its location, but I am becoming increasingly more irritated with his persistence. I should have listened to you sooner. I was blinded by grief and needed some semblance of consistency, and for that, I am sorry. I know now that I need to watch my own back, that I can’t trust those I once thought of as confidants.

As long as Casimir is in residence in Basgiath, I struggle to see how I could covertly pass your research to Violet. I am hoping that he will be reassigned before her third year in the Rider’s Quadrant. Should he be reassigned, and it become possible to entrust your research to her…I fear the repercussions of her revelations. She won’t understand why you’ve kept her in the dark. You left too soon, left too many of your plans unfinished. Now we can only hope the bond between our daughters is strong enough to endure the paths they’ve chosen. They’ll need each other to survive.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL ASHER SORRENGAIL

Notes:

I stole an epigraph from Onyx Storm in this letter from Lilith because I figured tying it into the research made sense, considering Lilith never saw Asher’s research after it was hidden away! The chance meeting on the Gauntlet stairs between Violet, Xaden, General Sorrengail, and Colonel Aetos happened probably in early March, so I decided to place it in this section!

Chapter 4: Montserrat

Summary:

This chapter takes place after the events that occur while Violet and her squad are at Montserrat!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Banner 2

General Sorrengail,

As I’m sure you’re aware, Montserrat was attacked while the Second Squad, Flame Section cadets from Fourth Wing were in residence. We had no casualties from the attack, and all of the cadets made it out prior to the gryphons swarming the fortress. There were no other incidents during the cadets’ visit.

However, I do want to express my displeasure concerns regarding the developing relationship situation between Cadet Sorrengail and Wingleader Riorson. This will come across as frank and questioning, and I apologize, but what the fuck?! How did General Melgren allow this? How did YOU agree to this?!

And then there’s the fact that Cadet Sorrengail, while stronger than she was prior to entering the Quadrant, lacks the muscular strength and endurance to maintain her seat on a dragon as large as Tairn. I doubt that concessions could be made (if any even existed to be made), and Tairn has been gracious enough to assist her magically…but at the cost of using his own power to do so. Again, I must apologize for my frankness, but you and I both know that General Melgren will not be content to keep a dragon as large and fearsome as Tairn at a midland post. Especially with the added complication benefit that having a mated pair of dragons like Sgaeyl and Tairn together in battle affords. Which means that after graduation, Cadet Sorrengail will be on the front lines, with a man who despises you but seems to genuinely care about her soon-to-be Lieutenant Riorson.

I have no doubts in his ability and willingness to keep her safe, mainly considering his life is dependent on hers continuing.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL TO GENERAL LIILITH SORRENGAIL

— — —

Lieutenant Sorrengail,

This does not concern you, it barely concerns me. As you are by now well aware, dragons do not answer to humans. I cannot control the actions of my own dragon, much less the actions of a dragon like Tairn. I doubt anyone could.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL

— — —

Lieutenant Sorrengail,

I was relieved to hear that you and Teine survived the attack on Montserrat. Violet was beside herself until she heard that you were okay. Speaking of Violet, I would like to apologize for my behavior regarding Violet. You were right. I haven’t been the most flexible or open minded when it comes to her, and I’ve been controlling . She couldn’t control joining the quadrant, and I tried to control that for her. I was naïve to think that I’d be successful, and that’s on me.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF SQUAD LEADER DAIN AETOS TO LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL

Notes:

I honestly don’t think Mira would have taken the time to write back to Dain. She knew that he knew how she felt, given their discussion in Montserrat. Plus, homegirl doesn’t have time to write back to her little sister’s childhood best friend lol.

Chapter 5: After Resson

Summary:

Cat and Syrena were canonically the only fliers to survive the attack on Resson (according to Xaden’s POV chapter at the end of FW), and I actually wrote a text exchange between Cat and Syrena after Resson during War Games, so that ended up being the inspiration for this chapter!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Cat,

I told you this multiple times yesterday, but I just needed to put in writing that I am so so sorry . I would never have let you come on the drop if I thought you’d be in danger…or anywhere close to suspected venin activity. It’s completely my fault, and I would never have forgiven myself if something had happened to you. You were so incredibly brave, and I could not be more proud to call you my sister. I hope you’re able to get some rest now that you’re back at Cliffsbane. Give Maren a hug for me, I’m sure she’s relieved that you’re back safe! Focus on the people around you, let them help you debrief everything that happened. And please , don’t waste any time thinking about Riorson and his new girlfriend. He’s not worth the time, and Loial knows that he isn’t sparing a single thought about you. I’m sorry if that seems harsh, but Cat, you have to move on. No crown is worth that amount of toxicity. I love you, and want you to be happy – truly happy. I’d love for you to be safe as well, but considering the state of things, that might be a pipe dream. Make sure that you and Kiralair get plenty to eat, and hopefully I’ll see you in Cordyn in a couple of weeks.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT SYRENA CORDELLA TO CADET CATRIONA CORDELLA

— — —

Uncle,

I’m writing to you regarding the attack on Resson and the turn of events that led to our survival. I’m not optimistic enough to call it a victory, considering those we lost, fliers and townspeople alike…as well as riders. As you’re well aware, we were supposed to meet with Riorson for the weapons drop on the 3rd. However, as we were patrolling from Draithus on the 1st, we came across a village that had been decimated by a horde of venin and their wyvern. We kept our distance as we tracked them, per protocol, and found them heading north, towards Resson. So we made camp outside of Athebyne and hoped Riorson would arrive early. As it turned out, he was already on his way to his Athebyne due to Basgiath’s obsession with “playing war games”. He and 9 other cadets, 8 of them Tyrrish, were taking a rest stop at Figielle Lake when we forced an encounter, to warn them about the impending attack. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that not only was one of his chosen cadets not Tyrrish, but none other than General Sorrengail’s youngest daughter. She’s also a rider, bonded to a black dragon who is, quite frankly, fucking enormous. And, it appears as though she and Riorson are romantically entangled in some form or fashion. Naturally, this discovery was…displeasing to Catriona when she was informed by my driftmate after our meeting at the lake. I have no doubt that you will be receiving a missive from Catriona as well.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT SYRENA CORDELLA TO VISCOUNT DIDIER TECARUS

— — —

Uncle,

We must talk about my betrothal to Xaden. Maren and I will be flying to Cordyn this week, I will find you immediately after I arrive.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET CATRIONA CORDELLA TO VISCOUNT DIDIER TECARUS

Notes:

>Considering Drake is a Captain, and slightly older than Syrena, who’s about Mira’s age, I’m hypothesizing that Syrena is a Lieutenant.
>Did I just make up a first name for Tecarus? Yep. Yep I did. The name Didier means longing or desire, which is fitting considering his “gift” is seeing what others desire most.

Chapter 6: FW BONUS CHAPTER: Brennan Gets Left On Read

Summary:

Remember how in Ch. 2 I said that my headcanon was that Xaden didn’t write to Brennan about, well, anything until after Threshing? Wellllll…let’s just say that Brennan wasn’t a fan of that.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Riorson,

Hopefully all of the first year Tyrs made it across the parapet without incident. I have no doubts that Mairi crossed over, and I’d be willing to bet that you didn’t have doubts either, but you’re still relieved to have him physically next to you in the Quadrant. I know how much he means to you, considering I’d give (almost) anything to see my own younger siblings. Speaking of, I have a small favor to ask. I know you’re probably sick and tired of me talking about my youngest sister…but Xaden, she’s so trusting, and you and I both know that Markham cannot be trusted to have anyone’s best interests at heart but his own. I have no doubts that she’s even smarter than she was six years ago, and she was fucking brilliant then. She’s going to figure out what he, and the rest of leadership, have been hiding before Markham deems her worthy of knowing. And that worries the shit out of me.

I’m not asking you to meander over to the Scribe Quadrant to check on her every week, that would be ludicrous…but maybe you could convince Liam to volunteer for Archives duty? He’s no doubt the first year that you trust the most, and since I trust you, I implicitly trust him as well.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO WINGLEADER XADEN RIORSON

Riorson,

I feel like I should apologize. I may have overstepped in my last missive, and for that, I am sorry. I hope that the semester is going well and that the cadets in your wing have been doing well in challenges so far. If Mairi was trained half as well by Lewellen and Lindell as you were, then I’m sure he’s already proven himself to be a formidable opponent. I’m sure that you’re enjoying getting to spar with him again, and I’m certain that Tavis and Durran are thrilled to be able to share the beat-down load with someone else.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO WINGLEADER XADEN RIORSON

— — —

Durran,

I swear to you, I’m not trying to be overbearing here, but I’ve sent Riorson two missives in the past month and a half and haven’t gotten as much as an acknowledgement, much less a reply. Is he okay? I’m assuming we’d get at least one letter if he wasn’t, so I’m hoping that no news is just all around good news. Is he bogged down with leadership responsibilities and being sent to man the midland posts? I know he isn’t the most…communicative person in general, but I’m starting to get slightly worried. I didn’t think my request in my first missive was that outrageous, but did I overstep far enough to offend him??

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO EXECUTIVE OFFICER BODHI DURRAN

— — —

Tavis,

I’m writing to you in the hopes that I might get a response from someone if they’re not in the Riorson family, since neither Xaden nor Durran seem inclined to reply to any of my missives.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO SECTION LEADER GARRICK TAVIS

Notes:

I’d like to blame the existence of this bonus chapter on my Beta reader, Elle, who commented while beta reading chapter 2: “You could always have a few random Brennan ones [letters to Xaden] like why aren't you writing to meeeeeeeee?”
And of course, being a Brennan stan and fellow older sibling, I loved the idea.
This will NOT be the only slightly unhinged bonus chapter in this fic, just fair warning ;)

Chapter 7: The Beginning, Round 2

Summary:

I feel like Lilith would no doubt have to vent on paper to Asher after finding out that Col Aetos was a lying, manipulative dirt bag. But that’s not the only missive that this chapter contains ;)

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Asher,

Casimir finally went a step too far, and was not as clever as he thought he was in regards to his attempts to cover it up. He almost cost Violet her life, and I was none the wiser to his machinations. But she knows now, Asher. She knows . I don’t know how much she knows (I suspect a great deal), but I pray that Hedeon grants her the wisdom to discern what to do with this burdensome knowledge.

I never understood what you meant, when you told me that your time was almost up. I never saw the signs that you did, or comprehended how you could possibly feel that eternal peace was near. But if my gut instincts are as good as yours apparently were, I’ll be seeing you again soon. Most generals dream of dying in service to their kingdom. But you know me better than that, my love. When I fall, it will be for one reason only: to protect our children.

It does give me some solace knowing that the mating bond between Violet and Xaden’s dragons will require him to continue to uphold the deal we made regarding Violet’s safety, even now that he has graduated from the Quadrant. I did not expect this outcome, when I made my deal with Fen Riorson’s son, and I doubt he did either. However, if there’s anything that I’ve learned about Xaden Riorson during his three years at Basgiath, it’s that he will stop at nothing to protect those he cares about.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL ASHER SORRENGAIL

— — —

Casimir,

I hope that your relocation to Luceras has been successful and the outpost at Doran is suitable for a man of your station. I regret to inform you that Cadet Sorrengail’s feathertail failed to report for flight maneuvers this week. Cadet Sorrengail began her leave and left for Samara last night, so I have been unable to enact any sort of disciplinary action meant to encourage the dragon’s participation. Rest assured, I believe I have come up with a worthy punishment that may prove beneficial for all parties. If she and her feathertail continue their defiance of command, despite disciplinary action, I will be taking your advice and schedule her squad’s RSC land navigation courses during the weekends when Lieutenant Riorson has leave. It does seem like their attachment to each other goes beyond a typical mated dragons bond.

I personally oversaw Cadet Sorrengail’s bag being searched prior to her departure for Samara; there was nothing of interest in her belongings. If weapons are being smuggled out of Basgiath, it appears that Cadet Sorrengail is not the mule. I will continue to have her belongings searched upon her departure, and if additional suspicions arise, will also search them upon her return. There was an…unfortunate incident regarding Cadet Sorrengail and a first year on Assessment Day that resulted in the death of the first year, as well as one of Cadet Sorrengail’s squadmates. It was one of a handful of unfortunate incidents that have occurred since the beginning of the year, but everything seems under control, as of this moment.

Wingleader Aetos has been slightly hesitant, but ultimately cooperative during his signet training sessions. His retrocognition ability has proven to be decidedly useful during civilian interrogations, provided that the suspicious events in question occurred within a week of the interrogation. Depending on how the semester goes, I am considering utilizing his talents during the interrogation phase of RSC. He may be particularly helpful when it becomes time for a certain squad to undergo testing. If we learn anything of note, I will inform you immediately.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF VICE COMMANDANT BURTON VARRISH TO COLONEL CASIMIR AETOS

Notes:

>We have three canonical snippets of letters from Lilith to Asher, so I decided to adapt another one and add in a little foreshadowing for good measure
>We’re never given the name of the coastal outpost that Col Aetos was sent to…so I had to make up something! Doran is derived from the Irish word deoradh, meaning "wanderer” or referring to an "exile." I figured the name sounded in-world enough, and the meaning fit!

Chapter 8: Trading with Tecarus

Summary:

We know that Tecarus sent at least two missives to Brennan while negotiating for the luminary, and after Violet’s first encounter with Cat, Xaden informed her that Tecarus gave the option to trade the luminary if he could see Violet wield. That missive was sent in July, and another arrived after the Violet and half the Quadrant arrived in Aretia. These are those missives, plus Brennan’s initial response to Tecarus’s July letter.

Aisereigh,

It is a pleasure to hear from you again! Your desire to reopen negotiations for the acquisition of my luminary is unsurprising, given the most recent attacks, and further spread of the dark wielders. You didn’t ask, of course, but my previous offer to revisit the betrothal of my beloved niece, Catriona Cordella, to Tyrrendor’s heir, Xaden Riorson, continues to stand. We have one willing party, all we need is Xaden’s consent…preferably willing, though unwilling is also acceptable, if he is finally ready to put the needs of Aretia, and Tyrrendor, above his desires and feelings.

I understand that our first deal was unsatisfactory due to your reticence to leave the luminary in Cordyn, and station dragons here to fire it when needed. Given that neither riders nor their dragons are agreeable to that, I suppose I have no choice but to allow its transfer to Aretia if we are able to come to desirable terms.

My nieces have reliably informed me that Xaden’s current paramour, a cadet named Violet Sorrengail I believe, happens to be a lightning wielder. If my records are correct, which they always are, she would be the first in about a century. How remarkable, to have such an asset at your disposal! It seems she was quite a useful weapon during the battle of Resson. Though I do trust my nieces, I would like to confirm for myself that she does indeed command the skies.

Considering my proclivity for the rare and unusual, I am willing to propose a different sort of trade. Aretia is welcome to acquire my luminary if I am allowed to observe first hand the lightning wielder’s talents.

Of course, once the luminary is fully functioning, I do have additional expectations.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF VISCOUNT DIDIER TECARUS TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

— — —

Viscount Tecarus,

Thank you for your response, the Assembly and I greatly appreciate your offers. Regrettably, we will have to decline them both. Your first offer was deemed absolutely unacceptable by Xaden unfavorable to Tyrrendor at this time, and the second has some logistical issues that make it currently impossible. Unfortunately, Cordyn is a two day flight from Basgiath, and Cadet Sorrengail is only able to obtain 48 hours of leave every fortnight, purely for her and Tairn to fly to wherever Lieutenant Riorson and Sgaeyl are stationed to sustain their dragons’ mating bond. Those circumstances alone make it unfeasible, but additionally, Lieutenant Riorson was vehemently opposed to the proposition.

If it is any consolation, due to Cadet Sorrengail’s leave schedule, the smuggling operation out of Basgiath’s forge should be able to continue. Lieutenant Riorson will acquire the weapons and make plans to rendezvous with your drifts.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH TO VISCOUNT DIDIER TECARUS

— — —

Aisereigh,

Congratulations on the sudden exponential growth of the Aretian riot! I assume since your numbers have grown so quickly, that you’re even more inclined to negotiate for my luminary in order to keep Aretia’s occupants safe, or at the least, well prepared. Considering the unexpected relocation of Flier cadets to Cordyn after the unfortunate fall of Zolya, I too have found myself more inclined to negotiate. Catriona is still agreeable to the betrothal offer, however, I am under the impression that Xaden remains disinterested, potentially even more so now, in light of the lengths he went to in his quest to rescue Violet Sorrengail.

Taking into account that one of your newest arrivals from Basgiath is none other than the aforementioned lightning wielder extraordinaire, it seems like the matter of convenience and inability to obtain leave is no longer an issue, seeing as Cordyn is a mere 12-hour flight from Aretia, compared to the two days it would have taken her to fly from Bagiath.

As discussed previously, once the luminary is fully functioning, Poromiel will require regular shipments of weaponry so that the drifts can be armed. The first shipment is to be delivered directly to me, so that I may begin arming the seaside drifts.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF VISCOUNT DIDIER TECARUS TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

Notes:

This chapter was honestly a delight to write. Viscount Tecarus is such an interested character, and one of my favorite parts of IF is this:

“Word traveled fast when you ruined that little war college of yours for her.” Tecarus tips his wineglass my direction as if saluting me. “Split your quadrant right down the middle. Bravo. Been trying to take that place down for years, and you did it in what? Six days?” Guilt settles on my chest with the weight of a dragon. “Five.” (...) “Five days.” Tecarus shakes his head in disbelief, then turns to me. “Marvelous. Now, I assume you’d like to discuss acquiring the luminary I have in my possession?”

I don’t know why it cracks me up so much, but I’ve always read it as a mixture of pride and jealousy that he wasn’t the one to “take down the man” lol.

Chapter 9: After Cordyn

Summary:

Sloane takes her Aretian therapist’s advice and writes back to Liam. He gets another posthumous letter as well, plus we have some sisterly advice. A very sibling focused chapter, if you will.

Liam,

Gods I fucking miss you. Being separated for almost 6 years was bad enough- I was counting down the days until I could see and hug you again. Being separated for the rest of my lifetime? It’s unfathomable

I don’t blame you for what happened, or Xaden, or Violet either…not anymore at least. I understand why Xaden asked you to be Violet’s bodyguard, and I understand why you agreed. I just wish that it hadn’t been you.

I see now what you were trying to explain in your letters. Xaden truly is so different around her. I don’t think I remember the last time I saw him soften and lower his defenses enough to let someone else in. She isn’t a liability to him, or a weakness, like everyone assumes. If anything, their bond makes him stronger…but it also makes him more reckless too. He put everything at risk in order to save her. Thank the gods he was successful, because I honestly think he and Sgaeyl would have burnt Basgiath to the ground if he wasn’t. And then Calldyr.

Xaden’s impromptu “Revolution” does have one perk though. Being back in Aretia means that I get to gorge myself on the Riorson family chef’s delicious food once again. It’s so nice being able to eat broccoli that isn’t limper than Colonel Markham’s dick. Full disrespect to the Basgiath chefs, and Colonel Markham, intended.

Speaking of Chef Tirza’s cooking… I’m so sorry that I never got the chance to tell you this in person but… it was me who ate the last of the lemon curd tarts the night before we were hauled off to Calldyr. Jokes on me, though, because now I can’t eat them without bursting into tears over a fucking pastry.

Gods, I know there’s so much more that I could say, that I could tell you about. I just don’t know how to, at least not on paper. Also, I don’t particularly want a written record of all of my crimes and sins. What I wish I could say most of all is that I love you.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET SLOANE MAIRI TO CADET LIAM MAIRI

— — —

Syrena,

The next time you’re in Cordyn, can you grab and send me my Deverelli silk robe? I left it behind because I only wanted to pack the essentials for our trip up the Medaro Pass, but now that we’re in Aretia, I believe I may have use for it…

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET CATRIONA CORDELLA TO LIEUTENANT SYRENA CORDELLA

— — —

Cat,

I’m not going to ask what you’re planning, because I don’t want to know. Just a gentle reminder that you’re in Aretia to learn and grow as a Flier…not to chase after a man. We’re in the middle of a godsdamned war, please don’t do anything stupid. I’d hate to be an only child.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT SYRENA CORDELLA TO CADET CATRIONA CORDELLA

Liam

Godsdamn I wish you were here. If you’re watching (which I bet you are, you lived for drama, but always kept your delight to yourself) then I’m sure that you are completely unsurprised about the turn that this semester has taken. It seems that your farsight may have extended beyond your physical ability because you were spot on when you predicted that Xaden wouldn’t last an entire year as a Navarrian Lieutenant before going AWOL. I’m guessing the two of you might have had a few conversations about what the future could hold, while you were in Lewellen.

However, I highly doubt that either of you accounted for the possibility of Violet Sorrengail. Or, maybe you did, but definitely not in the way that things have panned out. Hell, I don’t think any of us at the beginning of last year would have ever expected there to be a relationship, much less one that would lead Xaden to tear the whole damned Rider’s Quadrant in half, and move us all to Aretia. It’s a damn good thing we have a fucking fortress at our disposal.

I’ve never known Xaden to act before he thinks. He’s always been so calculated and purposeful about this whole “Revolution” thing. And yet, he essentially risked it all, for the daughter of the General that captured Fen, the General that he’s been hellbent to exact vengeance on for years

Although, I guess tearing apart her precious War College, all because he loves her daughter, might be vengeance enough. Miss you, brother. Wish you were here with us to laugh and marvel at the chaos.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF SECTION LEADER BODHI DURRAN TO CADET LIAM MAIRI

Notes:

>comedic relief in Sloane’s letter to Liam was inspired and encouraged by Elle (I’m still laughing my ass off thinking about that message)
>the name Tirza is a Hebrew name meaning “delight” and that just seemed fitting for a made up chef
>Couldn’t pass up an opportunity to throw some Cat in there, and explain where her infamous Deverelli silk robe came from, plus add a sisterly callback to what Mira told Violet in FW!
>additional angst and suffering brought to you by Bodhi Durran, who might not have been in this chapter if I hadn’t asked Elle why the chapter felt incomplete, and who was potentially missing.

Chapter 10: Maternal Self-Reflection

Asher,

Brennan is alive. All three of our children are alive , and together…and living under wards that will inevitably fail. Violet is now in possession of both Warrick and Lyra’s journals, and I pray that she can discover the differences between them as you did, before it’s too late.

Based on the disdain I saw in Brennan’s eyes, and his apathetic response to Melgren’s plea for aid, I am doubtful he will ever understand the choices I’ve made. Even though they were made with the goal of ensuring his, and our daughters’, survival.

All I’ve ever wanted is for our children to be safe, happy, and loved. I provided safety, you provided love, and they’ve attempted to find happiness on their own. Although I didn’t anticipate it, or initially approve of it, it seems that Violet may have found all three, safety, love, and happiness, in Xaden Riorson. And for that, I am grateful.

I fear the end is fast approaching. Brennan does not seem inclined to forgive, or forget, but as a leader in his own right, I can only hope that his disdain for me will prevent him from making the same mistakes that I did.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL ASHER SORRENGAIL

— — —

I never expected to see you again…at least, not before meeting Malek myself. Maybe one day you will come to understand my intentions, and see me as something other than a villain, but I doubt I’ll be around when you do. The true villains are out there, you’ve met them. I was Violet’s age when the truth found me, and I have been running from it ever since.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO UNKNOWN INTENDED RECIPIENT

— — —

Mira,

If you’re reading this, then I’ve met Malek and have finally reunited with your father. I’m sorry that it’s earlier than you expected, and that you’re likely left with more questions than answers. I hope that my journals give you the answers to some of those questions, but I anticipate that some of the answers you will have to seek for yourself. I will warn you now, the answers you find may not be the answers you want. At some point, the truth will hurt, but I taught you how to use hurt to bolster your strength, and I have no doubt that you will.

I’m sure you’re still wary regarding your sister’s relationship with Xaden Riorson, and I understand. It’s exhilarating, but also kind of terrifying, being with someone that could (and would) literally burn the world to the ground for you. Your father can relate, and I suspect Brennan knows a thing or two about that as well. Although it may seem like an odd thing for a mother to say, I hope that one day, you can find someone worth burning the world to the ground for as well…someone who would do the same for you.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL LILITH SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL

Notes:

>I wanted to throw a little nod to Theophanie in this chapter, and this seemed like the best place to do it!
>I know this seems like a weird place to put Lilith’s last letter to Mira, but I’m going more off when it was written chronologically versus when it was read.

Your Esteemed Majesty,

Securing Basgiath and the wards has come at great cost, including General Sorrengail’s life. Strategy must adjust. It is in the realm’s best interest to ally with Poromiel, even temporarily.

I am sending missives to the other members of the Senarium. If we are to open negotiations regarding an alliance, the Senarium must convene. I would humbly suggest that they convene at Basgiath, considering we currently have Poromish Flier cadets in residence, and they will undoubtedly play a role in negotiations. Due to the comprehensive protections of the recently re-secured wards, they are unable to wield, an issue which I am sure will be addressed during negotiations.

In addition, it has come to my attention that the second dragon bonded to Cadet Sorrengail, the one previously thought to be a feathertail, Andarna, is actually a dragon from the Seventh Den. I have, on good faith from Codagh, been informed that she is the reason why our wards are fully functioning. If she had not helped fire the wardstone, it is believed that the integrity of our wards would not truly withstand attacks from dark wielders.

As you suspected, Cadet Sorrengail has proven to be a valuable asset to Basgiath, and to the Kingdom. Regrettably, I must say the same about Lieutenant Riorson and his dragon as well. Cadet Sorrengail and Lieutenant Riorson make a formidable pair, one that would be extremely dangerous if they were to ally themselves against the Kingdom.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL AUGUSTINE MELGREN TO HIS MAJESTY KING TAURI

— — —

Liam,

Gods I don’t even know what to say. I wish you were here so badly so I could give you a big hug and cry on your shoulder. I killed General Sorrengail. I siphoned her lifeforce, and her dragon’s, out of her in order to imbue the wardstone. It wasn’t my choice, and I truly didn’t want to do it. But she essentially demanded that I do it, she goaded me into it…and I obeyed. I killed her, and we were able to bring the wards back up, but I. Still. Killed. Her. And I hate myself for it. Why do I hate myself for it??

She’s the reason both of our parents are dead, she fucking said it herself in the wardstone chamber! She brought up Mom, and how she made us watch her execution. She brought up you and how your death was her fault because she hadn’t realized what Aetos Sr. was up to. But I realized, I didn’t hate her anymore for that. I couldn’t. And then Violet brought up Xaden. He was fighting a venin, and losing , and he was dying. And I…I gave in.

I thought I’d feel some relief, knowing that she’s dead. But all I feel is guilt, and grief. The guilt is easy to understand. But the grief…the grief is because now Violet doesn’t have either of her parents either. And I know all too well how that feels, to watch them die in front of you and know that there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Violet and Xaden both seemed tenser than usual after the battle. Which, I mean, is completely understandable. People fucking died, one of which was her mom, and both of them almost fucking died, but didn’t. At least Violet has Xaden, and her two siblings…she has people to grieve and mourn with. I only had you for ten minutes before they ripped us away from each other. I wouldn’t trade those ten minutes for the world.

Bodhi,

BRO you are never going to believe this. I gotta hand it to Xaden, he came up with the absolute most unhinged plan to get him…well, us, really…off of the front lines. Somehow, by the grace of Zihnal, but also some implied ass-kissing of Professors Emetterio and Devera, the prodigal son is returning to Basgiath.

AS A FUCKING PROFESSOR. And I’m his ASSISTANT. This is not a joke, I am completely serious.

We’re going to be teaching this new “signet sparring” class that’s supposed to help the cadets learn how to effectively battle venin who are also using their signets.

I have a feeling that we will be utilizing your signet quite often. Maybe we should make you the “assistant to the assistant professor.”

Did you sign off on this?!

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET IMOGEN CARDULO TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN SORRENGAIL

— — —

Garrick,

I’m sorry to throw you into being a substitute teacher this early. I’m sure Violet explained the circumstances that make it…inadvisable for me to return to Basgiath right now. I should be back to feeling more like myself by the time we need to leave for the Isles in a couple of weeks.

Sorry.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF HIS GRACE, LIEUTENANT XADEN RIORSON, SIXTEENTH DUKE OF TYRRENDOR TO LIEUTENANT GARRICK TAVIS

— — —

Felix,

I meant to write just to talk to you about Violet’s refusal to train with Professor Carr while we’re at Basgiath… but some shit has happened and honestly, her refusal is completely justified.

I don’t even know how to explain this. We both know that Carr doesn’t have the most… conventional teaching methods, but godsdamn, I didn’t know that professors were legally allowed to murder, attempt to murder, or encourage the murder of students in the middle of class?? I swear to Malek, the man gets off on being able to nearly incinerate students in the name of “teaching.”

First, he scorched a second-year, who’s still in the Healer’s Quadrant for third degree burns on his face and scalp…and then he essentially encouraged Wing-fucking-leader Kagiso to follow his lead. And of course, Timin did just that, and almost scorched poor Bridget Edan, who I’m sure was having flashbacks to Calldyr the whole time. Garrick had just left with Xaden for some “Professor talk”, so thank Zihnal that I was able to counter his signet before it could touch Bridget. She’s not even in my wing, but considering her own Wingleader was the one responsible for her distress, I personally escorted her to the Healer’s Quadrant after class so she could make an emergency appointment with one of their mental health specialists.

But that’s not even the worst of it. Carr let Kagiso stay in the pit, and sent more cadets in against him. And after I saved Bridget from meeting a similar fate as her parents, Carr fucking berated me in front of the entire class. He told me, in no uncertain terms, that if I didn’t “stand down and stop undermining his authority as a professor” that I would be written up. So, I listened to him. And you know what happened? A second year, also in Kagiso’s wing, ended up channeling from the earth, and got a knife to the back for it. I think the final tally of Second Wing’s injuries were: 3 cadets with burns of varying severity, 1 Tyrrish cadet with PTSD, and 1 dead cadet turned venin. Fucking disgraceful. I’m so done with this place.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF SECTION LEADER BODHI DURRAN TO COLONEL FELIX GERAULT

Notes:

>Brennan changed his last name back to Sorrengail in Chapter 11, and Professor Riorson was introduced in Ch 13, so I had Imogen recognize that name change in her missive!
>In Ch 28, when Carr is teaching signet sparring class, there’s this little exchange:

“Heads up,” Garrick says, and we both look forward as a first-year with a rebellion relic steps into the pit with Timin Kagiso—the newly promoted wingleader for Second Wing. “Let’s try to keep anyone else from burning.” Go figure another fire wielder was Second Wing’s executive officer when Aura died. “On it.” Bodhi sets his book on the wall and takes a step closer to the mat near the end of the squad. (…) “Fuck,” Garrick mutters, and all our heads turn toward the pit as fire erupts from Wingleader Kagiso, streaming toward the first-year. Bodhi takes three quick steps onto the mat, then turns his hand, and the fire dies. An argument immediately ensues with Carr, but I ignore it and pivot my focus to Sloane.

The first year isn’t given a name (or a gender actually), so I did lol. And I made this letter from Bodhi to Felix to give a little more background to why Felix came to Basgiath after they returned from the Isles!

Faris,

I thought I should make you aware of the imminent arrival of some Amaralis visitors. I believe that one of them will be of the utmost importance to your wife, Talia. I made a deal with the current Duke of Tyrrendor yesterday, regarding using Deverelli as a waypoint for their expedition through the Isles, as they seek allies and the seventh breed of dragon. You know I barely deign to entertain the Navarrian royalty of Amaralys. They’re always so…disappointing in person, and the current heir is no exception. Pity.

However, I am curious to see how this Tyrrish Duke and his consort fare in these upcoming tests, they seem to be a formidable pair. If I remember correctly, the Duke’s name is Xaden Riorson? Regardless, you should have a few weeks before they arrive on your shores. They plan to return to Amaralys to regroup and resupply before heading back to the Isles. They will stop in Deverelli first, and will likely plan to travel to Unnbriel after a day of rest. I would anticipate Hedotis being their second stop on their voyage. Do inform me of how it goes.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF KING COURTLYN THE FOURTH OF DEVERELLI TO FARIS, SECOND OF THE TRIUMVIRATE OF HEDOTIS

— — —

Syrena,

WHAT in the actual fuck happened to Xaden Riorson between the ending of his betrothal to Cat and now? The man laughed , actually laughed , and made jokes during our trip to Deverelli. He actually seemed…pleasant? Maybe even slightly affectionate? Was Violet the catalyst for this complete personality change? I can’t imagine that getting his title reinstated would lead him to acting laid back; if anything, I would think the responsibilities accompanying the title would make him more uptight than usual.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CAPTAIN DRAKE CORDELLA TO LIEUTENANT SYRENA CORDELLA

— — —

Rhi,

Gods, I don’t even know where to start. I hope everything is okay back at Basgiath, and that Halden hasn’t caused too much of a ruckus about being left behind. None of us have any regrets about that decision, and the gryphons have so much more stamina without having to carry his little bitch self basket. You’d never know that Halden is three years older than Aaric, based on their behavior and how much more mature Aaric acts in…well…basically every facet of his life. Halden would never dare to volunteer for a fight against someone bigger and stronger than him. He’d say it was “beneath him” as the heir, but even if Aaric was the heir, I’m inclined to believe that he would still offer himself up as a participant in such a fight. He’s always been the most honorable of his brothers. I wish you and Sawyer were with us, but I’m grateful to have Ridoc, even if his sarcasm is wearing on Mira’s last nerve.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET VIOLET SORRENGAIL TO SQUAD LEADER RHIANNON MATTHIAS

— — —

Sawyer,

DUDE. Dude. You would not believe the shit that has gone down this trip. I barely believe the shit that has gone down, and I’ve been living it!!

First of all, I should have known that this would be an adventure for the ages, considering the chaos started before we even fucking left Basgiath! I’m sure by now you’ve figured out that we played a game of “trading Princes” and brought Aaric with us as our Navarrian royal representative. Seriously, thank fucking Zihnal for him, because as much as I love drama…there’s only room for so much, and having one set of exes is enough. Plus, Cat has grown on me, and actually seems to respect Violet now. I can’t say the same about Haughty Halden and his dick wetting ways. Fuck that guy.

Anyways, Halden made a bit of a scene on the flight field before we left, and I have no doubts that he went and pouted to King Daddy as soon as we took off. I was very impressed by how well Aaric was able to trash talk his older brother, it truly is a shame that he’s the spare, not the heir. After we got out of Basgiath’s air space, the time flying was so much more pleasant, and went by faster, with no Halden, and no basket.

We made it to Athebyne without any issues, hung out for a day without any issues, and then went to Cordyn to hang out with Cat’s Rich Ass Uncle. His poooooools, Sawyer, praise the gods for the pools! I will never complain about rest days in this impractical oasis! We gotta find a way to get you over here for some “physical therapy”, buddy.

Viscount Tecarus seemed semi-relieved not to have to accompany Haughty Halden via the sea again. He didn’t appear the least bit sad that we were leaving him behind this time. I don’t blame him, if I had those pools, I wouldn’t want to leave either!

We were slightly concerned about how warmly we’d be welcomed back to Deverelli, but once they learned that Halden was left behind, our two days there at Tecarus’s estate went by without incident. We stayed far away from King Courtlyn’s palace, in the hopes that if we laid low and didn’t raise any flags that he wouldn’t bother us. Truly, the only thing of note that happened on Deverelli was that Mira was able to confirm that some runes really do work , even after being taken off the Continent. Not all of the runes we’ve tested work, and I’m definitely not the person to try and explain the how/what/why of this discovery, but it’s still a slight comfort to know that even though we can’t wield, we have some magic at our disposal.

I miss Aotrom though. Maybe that’s why this letter is so long. Whoops.

We left for Unnbriel, our first non-Deverelli Isle stop, on Saturday. I hope you’re somewhere comfy, Sawyer, because this is where shit really gets interesting. Much like Deverelli, there wasn’t any magic on Unnbriel either…or at least, there shouldn’t have been? The Unnbrish soldiers that made up a very unwelcoming “welcome party” only let half of us earn entrance to their court, so Violet took Xaden (obvs.), Aaric (also obvs.), Cat (because Poromiel), and Aetos (because language nerd). Which meant that Trager, Drake, Mira, Garrick, Maren, and I got to stay behind with some moderately pissed off dragons and gryphons.

Needless to say, our morning was pretty uneventful compared to the crew that went to try and secure an alliance. We knew that someone would be facing trial by combat in order to be granted an audience with the Queen…and we all assumed that would be Xaden. And it was, but it also wasn’t, because Aetos and Violet also ended up fighting. And of course, because “Isle of War” and all that, their three warriors were apparently fucking MASSIVE. Xaden and Violet both won their matches, but Aetos got knocked the fuck out …and Violet didn’t learn until after she’d already held her dagger to her opponent’s throat that her opponent WAS THE QUEEN. Not exactly a winning strategy in terms of diplomatic relations but uh, they still got an audience??

Unfortunately, they weren’t completely successful in securing an alliance, but not because Violet threatened their ruler. In exchange for an army to fight against the venin, the Unnbrish want dragons. But oh no, not just any dragons…they want EGGS. TWELVE OF THEM, two from each den. I’m actually shocked that Sgaeyl and Tairn didn’t just light the whole place up out of pure indignation at the request. Soooo yeah. That’s sure as fuck NOT happening. Without magic, I can’t ask Aotrom to confirm (never thought I’d miss that bastard’s constant snide remarks so much), but I’m willing to bet a roll of churam that he wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the Vale when that proposition is brought to the Empyrean.

We let the dragons and gryphons relax for the rest of the day, and then spent the night flying to Hedotis, which is where I’m sending this letter from. SAWYER. DUDE. We have only been on this isle for TWO FUCKING HOURS…and it has already proven to be a HOTBED of drama. Hooooly shit. So. We land, right? Once again, no magic, and both the dragons and gryphons seem a little more agitated here than they were on Deverelli or Unnbriel. Weird vibes. And then the welcoming party comes down to the beach.

The first guy to greet us introduced himself as the second of the three triumvirate leader people. He seems…interesting. And then he brought his household down for introductions, because apparently he’d decided that we were going to be staying at his house. I guess that’s how things work when you’re an elected official and not a nepo baby? Well, as it turns out, his wife, Talia, IS XADEN’S MOM. HIS MOTHER. THE WOMAN WHO BIRTHED HIM. LIVING PROOF that Xaden Riorson was, at one time, a baby. Oh and I guess he hadn’t seen her for 13 years, because she removed herself from his life on his tenth birthday . Let’s just say it was not a…joyful…family reunion, and now things are really fucking awkward.

I’m really hoping that we don’t have any more “fun” surprises on Zehyllna or Loysam. I think I’m looking forward to Loysam the most, especially with how much looooove there is within Quest Squad! Once again, I present to you, Ridoc’s Isle Kingdoms Smash or Pass predictions!!

Confirmed couples/I have vibes:

  • Violet and Xaden: SMASH. Easy. Feels like cheating to even include these two. Though, with no magic, that means no “lightning strikes” so…who knows what’s going on. Sgaeyl and Tairn have seemed tense, and Tairn and Violet can talk to each other (those two, plus Andarna, are the only ones), so maybe Tairn’s stress is bleeding into Violet?
  • Cat and Trager: SMASH!! Dude. She gives him “fuck me eyes”, but NOT the same ones she used to give Xaden. These are less lust/jealousy/desire for a hate fuck and more global attraction/longing. I’m here for it. And based on the hickey I thought I saw on Trager’s neck when we landed on Hedotis…I miiiight be a little late on this prediction?!
  • Mira and Drake: Smaaaash?? The banter is soooo there. SO THERE. Plus, who doesn’t love a good “she kneed me in the balls” meet cute?!

The singles/MY options:

  • Maren: Smash. Why not?! She’s cute, and if Cat ends up sharing a bedroll/getting a room with Trager…Maren might be lonely ;)
  • Dain: I am toorrrnnn. Hmmm. You know what, SMASH. Because this man got the living shit beat out of him in the name of trying to form an alliance and I. Respect. It. SMASH.
  • Garrick: pass, which breaks my heart, but damn if I’m not rooting for him and Imogen. Howeverrrrr…if he were to approach me, I would NOT say no ;)
  • Aaric: uh SMASH. Hard SMASH. I don’t care what language he talks to me in, but daaammmnn I’d hit that.

Give Jesinia my best, make sure you check in on that blue turtle, if you catch my drift ;)

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF CADET RIDOC GAMLYN TO CADET SAWYER HENRICK

Notes:

>The only canonical letter snippet we have from the Isles was from Violet to Rhi, so I did add that snippet in there, because it made sense!
>Ridoc is 100% the type to put winky faces in his missives

Chapter 14: Andarna's Departure

Summary:

This chapter, or at least the first two letters, are based on this conversation between Brennan and Mira in Ch 54 of Onyx Storm:

“You sent me a missive saying our sister was a breath away from catatonic, so now I’m here. What does it look like I’m doing?” “I wanted you to get her out of bed.” Brennan gestures at me. “Not crawl into it with her.”

Mira,

I hope this missive makes it to you before it’s too late. I… we need you back in Aretia. Andarna left with her Irid family member after the wards went up. Understandably, Violet has not taken her loss well. I can count on one hand the number of times she has gotten out of bed since their bond was broken. She’s missing classes, and while I’m pretty sure Trissa accepts “I just lost a dragon” as a valid excuse, this just isn’t like Violet. She won’t speak, won’t talk, not to me, not to Xaden, not to her best friend, not to her squad mates…I’m at a loss. There’s nothing physically wrong with her that I can mend. She won’t even acknowledge when anyone else is in the room with her. I’m really fucking worried, Mira, and I don’t know what else to do. No rider has ever survived the loss of their dragon, and I’m terrified that Violet won’t be the exception, despite still having her bond with Tairn.

I’ve petitioned your commanding officer for leave. I pray to Amari that he grants it.

-RECOVERED CORRESPONDENCE OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN SORRENGAIL TO LIEUTENANT MIRA SORRENGAIL

Colonel Ennis

I am hereby requesting five days of leave for Lieutenant Mira Sorrengail so that she may fly to Aretia, for a family emergency. I know the timing is less than ideal, which is why I hope you know that I would not be asking unless it truly was an emergency. I have sent a letter to Lieutenant Sorrengail as well, informing her of the situation. Any time you’re able to give her would be greatly appreciated.

Berwyn,

I regret to inform you that the Irid you all have been coveting is no longer a part of our riot. As you’re undoubtedly aware, the Aretian wards are now at full power. It seems that one of the Irids that Cadet Sorrengail and crew encountered during their expedition through the isles, came to The Continent because he felt inclined to do his own research. He arrived at some point during the battle and fired the wardstone, bringing the wards up to their full power. Afterwards, it is my understanding that our Irid left with him to ostensibly return to wherever the Irid den may be. Considering that Cadet Sorrengail is either unwilling or unable to talk to anyone following the loss of her dragon, I have no way of confirming this second-hand information.

>yet another edition of “names I just made up for the hell of it” with Colonel Ennis
>couldn't pass up the opportunity to put our favorite Sage, Berry in here

Chapter 15: Bonus Chapter: Outtakes

Summary:

These are missives that were written and were deemed a little too “out of world” to actually throw in with the chapters, but I found them humorous and felt like they should see the light of day. Only one of these was actually “sent”, but was written as an after thought, and was kind of a joke in order to fulfill an Exchange Bingo square :)

Notes:

This first one was actually written by Aspen herself, when I was anonymously talking with her about a sneak peek of her gift...and I laughed my ass off when I read it, so it's making an appearance (surprise lol)

Sup Brennan,

Dain Aetos (I believe you are familiar with him) kissed Violet Sorrengail (I believe you're familiar with her too) after threshing. Violet looked pretty meh about the whole thing.

Xaden was standing across the field from them, next to me. I have never seen that man so jealous in the twenty years l've known him.

Anyway, I'm sure the mated dragons thing will be nbd.

Toodles,

Gare-bear

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF SECTION LEADER GARRICK TAVIS TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL BRENNAN AISEREIGH

Burton,

GUESS WHO’S BACK, BITCHES. Spoiler alert: it’s me. Not you, sadly. Though, now that I’m the COMMANDING GENERAL of Basgiath, I can finally seek vengeance for your death. Gods I wish I could have seen the look on Commandant Pancake’s face when he was informed that I would be the one taking over Lil’s position, and not him . Ahh. I can almost picture it now, I’m sure it was glorious . That’s what he gets for exiling me to fucking DORAN. I will be perfectly happy if I never have to see a beach ever again. And don’t get me started on sand. Sand is the worst material known to man. It’s coarse, and gritty, and always gets everywhere, and it irritates the living shit out of me.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF GENERAL CASIMIR AETOS TO MAJOR BURTON VARRISH

Faris,

Remember the kid that your wife had with the former disgraced Duke of Tyrrendor who was toasted and roasted 7ish years ago? Well buckle up, bestie, because he’s now a fucking dragon rider, a shadow wielder, AND the Duke of Tyrrendor… and he’s headed your way. This letter should make it to you before he does though, because he and his traveling companions have to go back to Amaralys prior to beginning a journey through the Isles. I’m oh so intrigued to find out what kind of test you create for them. Don’t underestimate the intelligence of his consort though. She’s also a dragon rider, but she’s tiny, and her mind is the scariest thing about her. Besides her dragons…did I mention that she has two of them? Selfish bitch. I didn’t even know that was legal. Anywho, I hope Talia enjoys “Mommy and Me” time with her not-so-little boy. Also, I’d lock up the cats if I was you. The consort’s smaller dragon may have developed a taste for felines... my poor Shira was covered in dragon slobber, but otherwise unharmed. Another warning, if they don’t leave their pathetic excuse for a Navarrian prince behind, lock up your valuables with the cats. Sir Sticky Fingers hopefully learned his lesson, at the cost of his pretty little guard girlfriend, but just in case he doesn’t…be forewarned.

-RECOVERED, UNSENT CORRESPONDENCE OF KING COURTLYN THE FOURTH OF DEVERELLI TO FARIS, SECOND OF THE TRIUMVIRATE OF HEDOTIS

— — —

Courtlyn,

Thank you for the pre-arrival notification regarding our Amaralis visitors. The additional time for preparations and planning was much appreciated. Much like Deverelli and Unnbriel, we have made an alliance in regards to Hedotis being neutral ground for travel. I do want to inform you that your information was slightly lacking in a few details.

  • You were right not to underestimate the Duke’s consort. But not because of her proximity to the Duke, but because she is the daughter of Asher Daxton. Yes, that Asher Daxton.
  • You mentioned that the Amaralis were coming here because they seek the seventh breed of dragon. Were you aware that her second dragon is an Irid, the supposedly mythical seventh breed? Another detail that would have been helpful to be made aware of in advance.
  • What makes the seventh breed so special, you may ask? Or maybe you won’t ask, because you already know this, but the seventh breed is able to camouflage themselves. This ability is very helpful when said seventh breed of dragon is skulking about, as they are nearly undetectable. This ability is not very helpful if you’re a sheep.

We had to tell the boys that their beloved Julius escaped while they were at their grandparents house…and because we were tied up with our guests, that we were unaware of his “escape” until well after the fact. The next time that Deverelli receives a shipment of sheep, we humbly request two of those be delivered to us. One sheep can’t replace Julius, but maybe two of them will be sufficient.

Thank you in advance.

Notes:

And that concludes this fic! I hope you enjoyed it, and that it brought some laughs along with some angst!
This is by far the most unique fic I’ve ever written, and my first multi-chapter completed fic I think?? But I loved every second of research, learned a LOT that I’d missed, and had a blast coming up with first/last names and voices for characters!

Notes:

Once again, MASSIVE thank you has to go to ellebellewritesfic for being the Beta I needed for this fic! Thank you for your chaos, encouragement, and advice! Your friendship means the world to me!

And thank you again to Anna (theoneiam2277) for the AMAZING beginning of chapter artwork!!
