Chapter Text
It’s one of Diego’s favorite kind of nights... and it would be Luther’s too, if he were willing to just let himself enjoy something instead of anxiously fidgeting in the passenger seat of dad’s car. Diego is the polar opposite, casually angled in the driver’s seat with one hand tossed carelessly on the wheel as he smirks affectionately at Luther’s discomfort.
It’s emulated cool guy swagger from an assortment of movies he’s managed to see snippets of over the years, but as far as he knows, he’s pulling it off flawlessly.
“We should get back” Luther says in that voice that Diego knows only he has the privilege of hearing. Not the authoritative bossy tone he uses with numbers three through seven, but the plaintive, unsure one that’s only for his right-hand man.
“Nervous, baby?” Diego reaches over and grabs Luther’s hand. He knows if he wanted to, Luther could crush his hand to jelly, but instead the blond’s fingers remain light and pliant in Diego’s as he presses them to his lips.
Luther blushes. Diego swells with pride at the sight.
“If dad figures out we're gone…”
“He won’t. Just a little longer, hm? ¿Por favor?" He doesn’t know how many nights like this they have left. Diego’s itching to leave the Academy and their shitty father behind— has been for years. He wants Luther to come with him.
Klaus and Ben too.
Allison.
Hell, even Vanya. Get all six of them out together so they can breathe.
So they can live.
So they don’t end up like Five.
“Ok” Luther threads his fingers between Diego’s and allows Diego to pull their clasped hands against his chest.
It’ll never happen Diego thinks. He knows Luther won’t leave until he’s earned dad’s approval, and that just isn't in the cards for any of them. He and Allison can’t be in the same room for more than five minutes without ending up spewing words that cut each other to the bone. Klaus would have to care about his life to bother saving it, and Ben will go where Klaus goes. And Vanya… well what reason does Vanya have to leave behind her cushy life of playing violin in a mansion?
No, whenever Diego's finally ready to go, he knows it’ll be alone.
But tonight he’s got his dad’s hot-wired car, the winding city streets, and Luther’s hand pressed against his heartbeat.
