Chapter Text
Buck was surprised when his phone rang. No one had called him since he started the lawsuit against the LAFD and Bobby.
“Hello,” he said cautiously.
“Hello, am I speaking with Evan Buckley?” an unfamiliar female voice said.
“Yes, this is Evan,” he said with trepidation. “Who am I speaking with?”
“This is Amanda Lewinsky from the Chicago Department of Children and Family Services. I’m calling because you are listed as the guardian to Michael and Jessica Gallagher’s children. I’m sorry to inform you that they have both recently passed away.” She said briskly.
Buck sucked in a breath, shocked to hear that his brother had died.
“When did they die?” he asked, sounding shocked.
“Michael was killed in a car accident yesterday and Jessica died in childbirth this morning. She gave birth to twin girls. They also have a 1 year old son named Liam that they recently finalized the adoption of. Mrs. Gallagher’s lawyer, Jason Markem, was here at Mount Sinai when she passed. He had a copy of both wills which show you as the only person given guardianship of their children.” she explained.
Buck was confused. Why was she calling him if their lawyer was already involved? Shouldn’t it have been the lawyer calling him?
“Ms. Lewinsky, why are you calling me? Shouldn’t it have been Mr. Markem?” Buck asked.
“Mr. Gallagher had his younger cousins in the car with him. They were visiting because he and his wife were in the process of getting custody. Phillips, Ian, Debra and Carl all have minor injuries. I am their caseworker with DCFS. I was also Liam’s caseworker before he was adopted. I offered to call you while Mr. Markem contacts the other people listed in the will” She explained.
Buck was unsure of how to proceed. He all of a sudden had 3 kids and it sounds like 4 others might need him also. He looked around his loft with his mind racing. Where am I going to put all of them he thought hysterically.
“Ms. Lewinsky, thank you for calling me. Are Liam and the babies okay?” he asked.
“The girls are currently in the NICU since they were born 2 months early. They appear to be okay however they are both just a little over 3 pounds. Liam is currently in the onsite daycare here at the hospital.” She explained.
“How are they other children? The ones in the accident with Michael?” he asked. He was worried about these other kids. If Michael and Jess were trying to get custody something was obviously wrong with their home lives. He vaguely remembers hearing about a cousin named Frank who was a horrible father.
“The kids are being seen by doctors now. I can’t give you much information since you aren’t related to them.” Ms. Lewinsky stated.
“That’s incorrect.” Buck states firmly. “I was adopted by Michael's parents after my biological parents abandoned me on the streets of Chicago when I was 9.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I was under the impression that you were one of his old Seals teammates.” she said, sounding surprised.
“We were both in Navy Seals, however Michael was on team 3 and I was on team 6. Our parents first took me in as a foster kid. My adoption was finalized 5 days after I turned 11.” he explained.
“Mr. Buckley” she started to say.
“Gallagher” he interrupted.
“Oh, it shows in my paperwork that you go by Buckley.” Ms. Lewsinsky said unsure of the response she would get.
“I currently go by Buckley because I was trying to make it easier for my older sister to find me but I am going to request that everything say Gallagher going forward,” Buck explained. “Are you able to give me any information about my younger cousins?”
“Unfortunately I’m not able to at this time. You aren’t listed as someone I can release information to.” she explained regrettably.
“I understand. I’ll see if I can visit their rooms while I’m at the hospital
“Alright then Mr. Gallagher, I think we should continue our conversation in person. When are you coming to Chicago?” she asked.
“I’m already booking a flight. It leaves in 3 hours. I should be there at 6:25 tonight. I’ll take an Uber to the hospital. Will you still be there or will I see you tomorrow? Buck asked?
“I’m going to be here for a few more hours, however I’m not sure I will still be here when you get in. How about I meet you at the hospital tomorrow morning at 8:30.” she stated distractedly.
“8:30 is fine.” Buck said softly. He was trying to hear the doctor in the background who was stating Philip was out of surgery.
“Thank you Mr. Gallagher. I will see you tomorrow.” She said hurriedly, disconnecting the call.
Buck stood in his living room trying to process the conversation he had just had. He sat on his arm chair as he started sobbing. He had just lost his brother and sister-in-law. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do without them.
It took him 20 minutes to calm down. He realized he needed to pack and get to the airport so he went upstairs and started to pack his duffle bag. Once he was done he called an Uber to take him to the airport. He thought about calling Maddie but realized after his last conversation with her that he didn’t really want to speak to her for a while.
She hadn’t been supportive of him during his recovery from the fire truck explosion. In fact, the only people who had helped him had been Carla, Eddie, Eddie’s Abuela and Aunt Pepa. They were the only ones who visited him while he was in the hospital and after he came home. Maddie called him 3 times to yell at him and try to convince him that he couldn’t be a firefighter anymore. Chim agreed with her and even made fun of him while he was recovering because he was a ‘Gimp’ now who shouldn’t ever be allowed back even on light duty. He thought Bobby and Athena would come see him but it never happened. He did get a few calls and text messages but nothing else. Hen and Karen had just apologized to him last week for not being there for him. They had explained the IVF treatments and how they were focused on those. They hadn’t realized that they had cut everyone out until Denny yelled at them that he wanted to see his friends. He was grateful that they had apologized. They had all hugged and promised to be more supportive of each other in the future. Once he had started the lawsuit everyone stopped talking to him so he didn’t think there would be any support going forward.
As he locked the door to head downstairs to the Uber, he looked around and thought: This needs to change. I can’t have kids here. I need something bigger.
Chapter Text
After Buck arrived at LAX, he pulled out his laptop to start a list of things he would need to do. Usually he would do this on his phone but he felt like he would need to do some research while making his list and figured his laptop was the best option. (Look at me. I’m being responsible). He thought sarcastically.
List 1
Buy a house
Buy a minivan-His jeep had been destroyed in the tsunami
Buy cribs
Buy furniture
Talk to Carla to see how to get a nanny to help with the kids while he was at work
List 2-Chicago
Funerals for Michael and Jess
Talk to Mr. Markem about both of their wishes.
Talk to Ms. Lewinsky about other kids to find out if they need a home (see if they can come to California with him) (Get custody?)
See if Michael and Jess already named twins.
Get Liam from daycare and take care of him.
Visit twins in NICU
As he stared at the 2 lists he felt like his brain was melting. He decided that he would look at houses instead. He knew that he had his inheritance from his maternal grandparents that he had never touched. The Buckleys had tried to steal it after abandoning him but his great uncle had step in and threatened to have them arrested unless they left it alone and signed over parent rights to Joseph and Linda Gallagher.
Joseph and Linda were the couple who took him in as a foster child and later adopted him. He missed them everyday because they loved him and Michael unconditionally. They were so proud of both of them. They had been on vacation in Ireland when the taxi they were in was hit by a truck. They both died within 2 hours of being taken to the hospital. It had devastated both he and Michael.
Buck felt tears filling his eyes as he realized that the family that had chosen him was gone. He quickly wiped his eyes telling himself he could grieve later. He had children depending on him.
He heard the call for boarding so he quickly packed up his laptop and grabbed his bag. He had splurged on business class so his long legs wouldn’t be cramped. As he settled into his seat, he decided to make another list for what kind of house he wanted.
List 3-House
3 to 4 bedrooms
2 to 3 baths
Large yard
Basement (?)
Garage
In a good school system
Close to Eddie and Chris
Pool (maybe, could be dangerous with kids)
Large family spaces
Nice kitchen
Good size dining room
Quit street or Cul de sac
Once his basic list was done, he put in his airpods and listened to a crime pod cast for the rest of his flight. He wanted to keep his mind off of everything that that happened in the last few hours.
He landed then had to get through the nightmare that was O’hare airport. He flagged down a cab rather than getting an Uber, figuring it was faster.
“Thanks for the ride. Keep the change.” he said to the cab driver as he got out of the cab at Mount Sinai.
Quickly walking into the main lobby of the hospital, he headed to the receptionist desk and said “Hi, I’m looking for my nephew Liam Gallagher. I was told he was in the daycare here. I’m his legal guardian. My name is Evan Gallagher“.
Buck waited, slightly impatient, for the receptionist to check her computer.
“I do see you are listed here for Liam Gallagher and both baby girl Gallagher’s in the NICU. May I see your ID please?” the receptionist responded.
Buck handed over his ID and was given a visitor pass after being told that the daycare was on the 3 floor. Thanking her he quickly made his way over to the elevator. An elevator ride and a few turns later he found the daycare. He explained who he was to Liam and showed his ID again. The daycare worker once again checked the computer to verify him. She then explained that Liam had eaten about an hour ago and his diaper was changed 10 minutes ago. Another daycare worker brought Liam to him
“Hello Liam, I’m your uncle Buck. I don’t know if you remember me.” Buck said softly.
“Buc” Liam said excitedly.
Buck was surprised that Liam remembered him but also relieved. He thanked the daycare workers. He and Liam headed towards the elevators.
“Liam, we are going to see your new sisters. Then we are going to see about getting a hotel room for the night.” Buck explained to Liam gently.
He wasn’t sure if Liam really understood what was happening. Liam had been born addicted to Meth thanks to Monica, had finally been released from the hospital at 2 months old, had been placed with 3 different foster families for the next 10 months before finally ending up with Michael and Jess at 12 months old. He was currently 14 months old. Buck thought he might be so used to being passed around that this change might not even phase him. Liam just nodded to Buck’s statement and started playing with the strap of his duffle bag.
Buck and Liam walked into the NICU and were approached by a nurse. Once Buck again showed his ID and explained who he was the nurse told him to wait here for to get the doctor.
“Hello Mr. Gallagher, I’m Dr Jocelyn Martin and I am the doctor for both girls. How about we sit over here to discuss them.” Dr. Martin suggested.
They moved over to a small seating area where Dr. Martin explained that due to the twins low birth weight they would need to remain in the NICU until they were at least 5 pounds. She also stated that both were fairly healthy however both were on oxygen and in incubators because they were not regulating their body temperature very well.
“Dr. Martin, Will Liam and I be able to see them?” Buck asked.
“While I see no problems with you visiting, Liam is too young. Is there anyone who would be willing to watch him while you are with them?” Dr. Martin asked.
“I can watch him” came a voice next to Buck.
Buck looked over in shock. Standing next to him was Ian. He jumped up and hugged him gently, mindful of the cast Ian currently had on his left arm.
“How are you feeling? Is this from the car accident?” Buck asked, concerned.
“Yes, I broke my arm and I’m a little sore but otherwise I’m okay. I can watch Liam while you visit the twins.” Ian said.
“Before you see them I do want to show to the room that was set up for you.” Dr. Martin said.
“What room? Why would I have a room?” Buck asked, confused.
“Normally, we give a room to the parents of our NICU patients so that they may stay with their children here. It’s offered as a two week option so that parents don’t have to leave their newborns. Since you are their guardian, we set it up for you. I will let the nurse know that she needs to have a crib moved in for Liam.” Dr Martin explained.
Buck was relieved. He wasn’t looking forward to leaving the hospital with the twins still here. He then looked at Ian and asked him why he was still at the hospital.
“The group home that they put Lip and I in won’t let me come back this late. I was just going to stay in Lips room for tonight. There is a recliner I can sleep in.” Ian stated.
“What room is Lip in?” Buck asked?
“Lip is in room 506.” Ian said.
“Alright, why don’t you take Liam with you to Lip’s room? I’ll be up to pick up Liam after I visit the twins. Thank you for watching him.” Buck said, relieved to have a little help. He handed Liam to Ian and watched them get onto the elevator.
“Dr. Martin, I would like to put my bag in the room, please. Would I be able to get a few diapers and supplies for Liam? I will go to my brother's house tomorrow for more supplies.” Buck asked, feeling slightly overwhelmed. He was also relieved that he wouldn’t have to go looking for a hotel tonight.
“Of course, this is Nurse Jackie Lindley. She will take you to your room and have the crib and supplies brought up for you.” Dr. Martin said, while looking at her phone. “I apologize, however I’m needed in the ER. Jackie will help you for now Mr. Gallagher.” Dr. Martin rushed away leaving Buck with Nurse Jackie.
“Hello, Jackie, please Call me Buck.” he requested.
“Buck, it’s nice to meet you. I’m sorry for your loss.” Jackie said, feeling sorry for the man in front of her. He looked like he was about to cry. “If you’ll, follow me. I can take you to your room so you can set down your bag. While you are in the NICU, I will have a crib and supplies brought in for you.”
They quickly entered a room not far from the NICU. It had a bed, a recliner and a small bathroom attached. Buck set his back on the dresser located on the far wall. He then followed Jackie to the NICU. Once he had washed his hands and put on a gown he entered the NICU to see his nieces.
Chapter Text
Buck stood between the 2 incubators holding his nieces, trying not to cry. They were so small. Baby A weighed in at 3 pounds 2 ounces while Baby B weighed in at 3 pounds 6 ounces. He could only hope that they both survived.
“Hello, girls. I’m you Uncle Buck. I think I’m going to your dad if everything goes the way I think it will. I love you both so much already and I just met you. Your mom and dad loved you both so much. They were so excited for your birth.” Buck said sadly, not realizing that he had tears running down his face.
Buck sniffed and quickly wiped his tears on the shoulder of his shirt. He wondered where Michael and Jess’s personal effects were. He was pretty sure they had names picked out already. They both loved sending text to each other so he thought the names might be listed there. Buck figured he would ask for Jess’s stuff once he was done visiting the twins then he would go get Liam. Buck realized that his thoughts were all over the place so he started the breathing exercises his therapist had taught him. As he started to calm his mind, he realized Jackie was walking checking both babies.
“Do you know if their mother was able to name them before she died?” Buck asked quietly, worried that if he was too loud he would wake one of the babies.
“She wasn’t able to. She was able to see them both before she passed away however that was it. She wasn’t able to hold them or name them.” Jackie stated. “I know that her personal effects were given to her lawyer. I think I heard the social worker say that he would be back for your meeting tomorrow.”
“Thank you. I would like to sit with them for a little longer if you don’t mind.” Buck said.
“Of course, we place that chair in between their incubators so that you would be able to sit with both girls.” Jackie said, pointing to a padded rocking chair.
Buck sat down and whispered “I love you” over and over to the girls. He wanted them to know that there was someone who was looking out for them. He sat with them for another hour before he realized he needed to get Liam to bed. Telling the girls a quick goodbye he headed to the fifth floor to speak with Ian and Lip for a few minutes before he picked up Liam.
When he got to Lip’s room, he could see that Lip was barely awake. It looked like he had just woken up from his surgery. Ian was rocking Liam gently in the chair next to Lip’s bed. Liam was almost asleep.
“How are you two feeling?” Buck asked as quietly as he could so he didn’t disturb Liam.
Lip looked at him in surprise. He hadn’t expected Buck to care about him or Ian since adults usually ignored them.
“I’m doing okay now that they’ve fixed my leg.” Lip said sleepily, watching Buck suspiciously. “Are you here to take Liam away from us?”
Buck, watching both his and Ian’s faces, realized that they were both upset that he wasn’t leaving Liam with them.
“I was given a room on the 3rd floor close to the NICU. They gave a crib to put Liam in so I’m going to put him in the crib once I get back to the room. I am in room 315 on the 3rd floor. You are both welcome to come down tomorrow.” Buck stated. “Ian if you would like I can see if they can put another bed in my room so you can sleep in there.”
“I’ll stay with Lip tonight.” Ian stated, shocked by Buck’s offer. “I’ll be down tomorrow to see Liam in the morning. I’m pretty sure they are going to make me go back to the group home.”
“I have a meeting at 8:30 tomorrow morning with the social worker and Michael and Jess’s lawyer. Would you like me to bring Liam here while I’m in my meeting?” Buck asked kindly, thinking that the 2 boys probably wanted to spend as much time with their brother as they were allowed.
“You would allow us to babysit him?” Lip asked, excited to spend time with his baby brother.
“Of course, I would. I’m also going to see what I have to do to get custody of all of you. I know that Michael and Jess were working with DCFS, hopefully they will allow me to take custody instead. I know that Monica abandoned all of you and Frank is in prison for cashing social security checks that didn’t belong to him. Michael said that Fiona got angry and left you all with DCFS. Is that true?” Buck asked, frustrated with his extended family.
‘Monica took off after Liam was born. Someone figured out that Frank was cashing Aunt Ginger’s social security check and he’s in prison for the next 10 years. Fiona and I got in a fight and she decided she was done. She called DCFS about us being without an adult in the house then took off with a friend to Florida.” Lip explained. “Ian and I have been in the same group home for the last 5 months. Carl and Debbie have been in the same foster home for the same amount of time. Michael and Jess were trying to get us all transferred into their custody.”
“Well, I will try to get everything figured out in the next few days. If I do get custody, all of you will be going to LA with me once the twins are allowed to travel. I only have the room downstairs for 2 weeks. I will see if I can get everyone set up in my parents house until we are able to leave.” Buck told both boys.
Buck looked around the room for a closet. He checked it and found extra blankets and a pillow which he gave to Ian. He then lifted Liam up gently so he didn’t wake him up.
“I’m going back to my room for the night. I will see you both tomorrow. If you need me, call my room using the phone here Lip’s room. We’ll figure everything out in the next few days. I promise to do everything I can to get all of us under the same roof as soon as possible.” Buck said.
Buck quickly left so that he could get Liam settled. He knew he would have so much to do tomorrow. Hopefully Michael and Jess’s lawyer would be able to help a little.
Buck changed Liam’s diaper and got him into some footed pajamas left by the nurse. He laid him gently in the crib and stood there watching him sleep for a few minutes. Realizing that he now had the time, he sat on the bed and called several of Michael and Jess’s friends to let them know about their deaths. Once he had finished that chore, he realized he was exhausted so he took a shower, set an alarm and collapsed on the bed where he quickly fell asleep.
Chapter Text
Lip and Ian sat in stunned silence after Buck left the room. Neither of them could believe what they had heard and seen. No one had really cared for them since Fiona had left. Ian looked at the blanket and pillow in disbelief. He couldn’t believe Buck had been so kind to him.
“Do you think he really means it?” Ian asked uncertainly. “Would he really take us all to LA with him?”
“I don’t know. I barely remember him. I think the last time I saw him I was 5.” Lip said, still a little out of it from the anesthesia
Ian, realizing that he wasn’t going to have a coherent conversation with Lip, turned on the tv and settled into his chair. He’d never seen the pawn shop show that had appeared on the screen but thought it would be better than anything else. As he sat in the chair not paying attention to what he turned on, Ian thought anything is better than the group home.
*************************************************************************************************************
The next morning Buck woke up before his alarm. He lay there thinking about the fact that he was never going to be able to speak with his brother again. He started crying, burying his head in his pillow so he didn’t wake up Liam. It took him a little over 20 minutes to stop crying but he didn’t get up right away. He was once again trying to figure out what he was going to do now. He knew he had to make a few more lists because the ones he made weren’t going to cover everything that needed to be done. He just had to get through this meeting before he made any more plans. He could hear Liam starting to stir so he decided it was time to start his day.
“Good morning, Liam” He cooed, leaning over the side of the crib.
Liam watched him warily, even though he had seen Buck through a computer screen Liam had never met him in person up until last night. Buck wasn’t surprised that Liam seemed cautious around him. Liam had been passed around to so many people he probably already had trust issues. Hopefully, Buck would be able to gain his trust and make him feel safe.
Buck reached into the crib and picked Liam up. He cuddled him for a few seconds then turned towards his bed to get Liam changed and dressed for the day. He also packed a few things into the grocery bag that was given to him by the nurse.
“Well little man, I think it’s time to go see your brothers.” Buck declared, as he started out the door with Liam. Liam just watched him closely but didn’t say anything as they went on the elevator.
“Good morning, Lip and Ian” Buck said, as he walked into Lip’s room with Liam.
He could see only one breakfast tray sitting in front of Lip and it looked like he was handing some toast to Ian.
“They only gave you one tray?” Buck asked as he sat down on the empty bed in the room.
“They said we could order more but we would have to pay for it. We don’t have any money.” Lip said crossly.
“Alright, hand me the phone” Buck requested. “Liam and I haven’t eaten yet either. I wanted to check on both of you first.”
Once again, Buck’s thoughtfulness had startled the two teenagers. They weren’t used to adults being nice to them unless they wanted something. They watched in silence as Buck ordered three plates of scrambled eggs, sausage and toast paying with his debit card.
“Why three plates?” Ian asked, confused.
“You’re a teenage boy. I figured you could eat whatever Liam doesn’t finish.” Buck said, slightly amused by the offended look on Ian’s face.
The food was delivered shortly and Buck grabbed an extra sheet from the closet for Liam to sit on while he ate. Buck, Lip and Ian started eating while watching Liam make a complete mess out of his breakfast. Thankfully Buck had only given him part of his eggs to try to eat on his own. Once Buck was done, he sat on the floor with the rest of Liam’s and 1 sausage to feed him since he hadn’t gotten much in his mouth on his own. While he was feeding Liam, he explained to Lip and Ian that he didn’t really have a plan in place yet but he would soon speak with the social worker Ms. Lewinsky to see how he would go about getting custody of them along with Debbie and Carl. He gave both boys his cell phone number and told them that they could call him at any time. Once Liam was done eating, Buck realized he would have to head to his meeting soon. He cleaned Liam up and handed him to Lip, who already had his hands out for him. He then pulled out his wallet and gave both of them $20.
“If I’m not back before lunch, order whatever you want. I know hospital food sucks so if you want to order pizza and have it delivered to the front lobby. Ian, if I can get permission from Ms. Lewinsky, I will take you with me this afternoon to get you and Lip cell phones on my plan. If you need me, call me on the room phone. Hopefully, I can get temporary custody of both of you so that you don’t have to go back to the group home. I'll be back in a few hours.” Buck said, a little rushed, as he realized how close to 8:30 it was.
He quickly left Lip’s room so that he could get back to the NICU on time, leaving behind to stunned teenagers and a confused toddler.
Chapter 5
Notes:
I've changed the timeline for Shameless. I know that based on the show the Gallagher kids would be adults or near adults in 2019, but I've made them younger than the show for my story.
Chapter Text
Buck reached the NICU floor and quickly set off to his room. He sent a text message to Ms. Lewinsky to let her know the room number. While waiting he quickly made the bed and set Liam’s crib right. Hearing knowing on the door he greeted by Ms. Lewinsky and Mr. Markem.
“Hello, I’m Evan Buckley Gallagher. Please call me Buck.” Buck said, introducing himself.
“Hello Buck, I’m Jason Markem. Please call me Jason.” Jason said, shaking Buck’s hand. He was a nice tall, slightly overweight man dressed in a grey suit. He looked like he was a few years older than Buck.
“I’m Amanda Lewinsky. Please call me Amanda.” said the older brunette still standing in the hallway. She looked tired even though it was only 8:30 in the morning.
“Please come in. I hope you don’t mind meeting here. I haven’t had a chance to go to my parents house…I guess it’s my house now that Michael and Jess have passed away.” Buck said, sounding a little unsure.
“Well, since you, the children and their spouses were the only people mentioned in their wills, we can go over that shortly.’ Jason explained. “Let’s go over everything with Amanda first.”
The next hour and a half were spent going over everything. Liam and the twins' custody was transferred to Buck without any issue. He was left Michael’s half of the house. His parents had left each of their boys half-interested in the house. Buck had told Michael and Jess they could live there since he was happy in LA. He figured that’s where he would be living while dealing with everything for the kids. They also discussed him getting custody of the other Gallagher kids. Amanda was very helpful with that process. She explained everything he would need to bring into DCFS and set up an appointment for him next week. He was given temporary custody of Lip and Ian so that they wouldn’t have to live in the group home since Michael and Jess had already done the home study. He was relieved he wouldn’t have to leave them in the custody of DCFS. Buck had noticed, in the short time he had spent with them, that they both had trust issues and were expecting to be forgotten about. He made an appointment with Jason for the following Monday. Jason also let him know that based on Michael and Jess’s will he had already started the funeral arrangements so Buck figured they would finish those on Monday along with anything else that needed to be done. As he was leaving, Jason handed Buck Jess’s phone. Buck was grateful that he knew Jess so well as he was able to open it with Michael’s birthday.
Buck sat quietly after both had left the room looking at Michael and Jess’s text. He quickly found the names agreed upon for the girls and almost started crying again. He was touched that they wanted to name one of the girls after him.
He left the room in to head the NICU, knowing that Liam was safe with Lip and Ian for now. He found himself in between the incubators holding the twins, just watching them both breath. A new nurse approached him asking if he was okay.
“I found their names in Jess’s phone. How do I get their names put on their birth certificates?” Buck asked.
“I can get someone from records to come to the NICU shortly. I can place the names on their name cards at the end of their incubators for now if you would like.” the nurse, whose name tag said Logan.
“Thank you Logan.” Buck said before placing his hand on the left incubator. “Her name is Maeve Lynn” moving his hand to the right incubator “Her name is Sorcha Evan”.
Logan filled in the name cards for both incubators, telling Buck that someone from records would be to the NICU shortly. Buck sat between the two girls and started talking to them, telling them about their older brothers Liam, Lip and Ian. He had already decided he would adopt the other 4 Gallaghers so that they would have a stable home. He figured the $690 million left to him from his biological mother’s parents would go to a good cause.
He stayed in the NICU for another 2 hours, filling out birth certificates and just talking to the twins so that they would know they weren’t alone before heading back to Lip’s hospital room. He figured it was time to discuss what he wanted going forward to see if Lip and Ian agreed with him.
*************************************************************************************************************
Lip and Ian had spent the time Buck was gone, playing with Liam and talking about how they didn’t want to go back to the group home. They both looked up as Buck entered the room.
“I think we need to talk about what I’ve done this morning. I don’t want you boys to think that I’m not taking your wants into consideration but I wanted you out of the group home so I told the social worker that I wanted you in my custody as of today.” Buck disclosed to them.
Seeing the shocked look on both of their faces, Buck then went over everything discussed with Amanda earlier. He then revealed the temporary custody paperwork so that both knew that Buck was now their guardian. Buck had spoken with Lip’s doctor before entering the room so he explained that Lip was going to be in the hospital until next Wednesday. He then divulged to Ian that he had another bed put in the room on the NICU floor for Ian to sleep in until Lip was ready to go home. All of them would then be going to his parents house to live while Buck dealt with everything. He also revealed his plan to adopt all of the children so that they would never end up in foster care again.
While Lip and Ian were absorbing the information Buck had given them, Buck picked up Liam and hugged him close.
“Little man, did you enjoy your morning with your older brothers?” Buck asked, while lightly tickling Liam.
“Yes” Liam said in between giggles. “Played”
“I’m glad you played with them. Are you hungry? We should order pizza, right?” Buck asked Liam, while cuddling him close. He loved kids and Liam just made him want to hug him.
“Pizza!” Liam shouted excitedly. Obviously pizza was a hit with him.
Buck pulled up his Grubhub app to place an order. Ian leaned over to see where he was ordering from and quickly grabbed his phone to change the restaurant Buck was ordering from. He then sat on the bed next to Buck to help him order the 2 pies. Buck was happy just sitting there listening to Lip and Ian argue over toppings.
Buck was surprised when the driver sent him a text saying he was by the 5th floor elevators. Buck grabbed the pizzas and swiftly made his way back to Lip’s room. After eating and cleaning up Liam, Buck explained that he was going to take Ian with him to get phones for both Ian and Lip. Buck, Liam and Ian then headed to the daycare for Liam. While Buck was getting Liam settled he handed his phone to Ian so he could call them an Uber.
After a discussion in the Uber, Buck decided to get both boys the latest Samsung Galaxy (Ian was very persuasive, no Apple products for them). Lip got a blue phone and Ian a red. After paying for everything, they got another Uber to the group home so that they could get the boy's belongings. One more Uber ride back to the hospital then they were able to relax in Lips’ room after getting Liam from the daycare.
Buck pulled up Grubhub while the 2 teenagers were setting up their phones. He had Liam sit with him and started naming types of food to see which one resonated with him. After he said pancakes and Liam got excited, he decided on IHOP. Telling both boys to decide what they wanted he placed his order for crepes for himself and a kids order of pancakes with bacon for Liam. Lip and Ian quickly decided on omelets with hashbrowns for themselves. Buck, using Lips remote, found a kids show for Liam to watch while waiting for food. Their dinner eaten, Buck, Ian and Liam said goodnight to Lip who barely noticed as he was too busy playing with his new phone.
Once back to the room on the NICU floor, Buck asked Ian to watch Liam while he went to check on the twins. Buck spent an hour with the twins before returning to the room. He got Liam ready for bed, took a shower then made Ian take a shower. Liam fell asleep quickly so Buck and Ian watched TV and played on their phones for another 2 hours before going to sleep.
Chapter 6
Notes:
I decided to do 2 chapters in 1 day. I am setting everything up for when they arrive in LA.
Chapter Text
Two months later, everyone was getting used to each other. He was surprised how easy it was for him to adopt all of the kids. He was pretty sure the money from his grandparents helped. They were currently living in his parents house in Chicago but were packing because the house he had purchased in Glendale, CA was finally finished. He had purchased a 5 bedroom 5 bath house single story home. It had a large attic so while he was waiting to get clearance to take the twins on a plane he had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms added. They were for Lip and Ian so that they would have privacy. He had finally gotten clearance to take the girls on a plane yesterday even though they had been home for the last 3 weeks. Buck sat in the living room listening to the kids bicker as they packed. He was so glad that he had purchased a house big enough for all of them.
Buck had just heard from his lawyer who had worked extra hard to get Buck his job back. Turns out it wasn’t just Bobby who was lying to HR, the union and the Brass, it was Battalion Chief Barnesfield who was upset because his step daughter was involved in the catfishing incident. She had been notified that someone was pretending to be Buck but was still angry about what happened. She complained to her stepdad knowing that Buck was a firefighter under his leadership. Barnesfield had helped Bobby block his return in retaliation.
Once that information had come out, things progressed quickly. Barnesfield was fired and Bobby was suspended for 3 months without pay due to his abuse of power. He was required to attend counseling with a counselor, not his priest, for at least 24 sessions. The counselor had to send weekly updates and sign off on Bobby’s return. Once Bobby was given the go ahead to return he would have another captain shadowing him for 3 months. Bobby was also informed that in order to keep his captains position he would need redo his leadership classes, LAFD policy and procedures, sexual harassment and workplace harrassment classes plus a class on how to recognize workplace bullying.
Due to Bobby’s action’s a review of the whole 118 was done and several people lost their jobs or were demoted. Chim was demoted from Lieutenant and was no longer head paramedic. Due to his bullying he was suspended for a month without pay and had to attend classes on workplace harassment, sexual harassment plus it was decided that he hadn’t kept up with his continuing education classes so he had to complete 5 more paramedic classes before he could go back to work. He had 2 black marks placed on his record for his response to Buck telling him of Dr. Wells rape and his using it to bully Buck. He was informed that he would not be eligible for promotion for another 5 years and would never be allowed to be captain based on complaints received during his tenure as interim captain.
Hen was suspended for 2 weeks without pay. She was forced into the same harassment classes as Bobby and Chim. She was also written up for her part in the bullying of several coworkers. (Turns out Buck wasn’t the only victim of her and Chim’s bullying). She was also forced to take 3 continuing education classes that Chim had waived for her.
Eddie was pulled into a meeting with the brass, his union rep and an HR rep who told him that since he had been at the scene of his wife’s accident, they were going to give him 4 weeks off for bereavement. They also told him that before he would come back to work he would need to speak with a counselor twice a week during his time off. He wouldn’t be allowed back to work until he had followed the plan laid out for him. While he was in the office he confessed that Lena Bosko had taken him to a street fight the night before. He found out from a few of the others in the crowd that she had recruited them from other fire houses and now if they didn’t show up then the organizers had threatened their kids. Police were called and an investigation was started right away. Eddie was informed that he would need to cooperate with the investigation or he would lose his job. He was also required to take anger management classes. It was suggested that he contact the VA to see if he could get help with his very obvious PTSD.
Several others from shift B and C had been caught in the investigation and had lost their jobs for stealing supplies and sexual harassment of one of the female fire fighters on C shift.
Buck was informed that his first shift back at the 118 would be in two weeks. The fire department tried to offer him a monetary settlement but he had explained he only wanted his job back. The fire department was happy he didn’t take the settlement and put him back to active duty after reviewing his medical release forms.
Buck now had to find childcare or a nanny ASAP. He also needed to make sure Lip’s tuition was paid and he had a way to get to the STEM private school he had gotten into. Buck was so proud of him. He had been stuck on the couch for the first few weeks he was home and had taken upon himself to take the entrance exam for several STEM schools in the LA area. Buck had already signed up Ian, Debbie and Carl up for a private school in Glendale that had transportation for them.
Buck, after a walk through of the house, realized that everything was packed and the kids were ready to go. He got them all out to the van he had rented and to the hotel they would be staying the night at. Tomorrow he would meet the movers at the house so that they could get everything sent to California. He had already contracted out to a rental company for long term rentals and knew that the renters would be moving in a week from tomorrow.
They ordered room service for dinner and then sat around talking about what they wanted to do once they got to California. Buck had already promised that they would go Disneyland the weekend before he had to go back to work but they were also talking about trips to the zoo and the aquarium. Lip and Ian were trying to convince him that they needed to go to Six Flags before school started. That started a debate between the 2 teenagers and Debbie and Carl. Buck just let them go as he played with Liam. Maeve and Sorcha were in travel cribs sleeping.
The next morning Buck left Lip and Ian in charge of the kids after breakfast so that he could meet the movers. Once they had filled the truck, the cleaners he had hired showed up and had the house cleaned and ready for the renters. Feeling pretty good about what he had accomplished that morning he headed back to the hotel to spend the rest of the day with his kids. They needed to be at the airport the next day by noon for their four hour flight. He had thought about doing a commercial airline but realized very quickly that his kids would terrorize everyone on the plane so he chartered a jet for their flight.
As he laid in bed that night he looked at his phone and noticed he hadn’t heard from any of his ‘friends’ in months. His sister had stopped talking to him once he wouldn’t do what she wanted which was drop the lawsuit and the others just ghosted him. He wasn’t even sure he could call them his friends anymore. He had already decided to write Maddie off. He was tired of her attitude and didn’t want to deal with her entitlement anymore. The more he thought about it the more sure he was in his decision not to tell any of them about his kids. He had been thinking about his relationship with all of them for the last few months and decided he wasn’t going to share his personal life with them anymore unless they apologized.
The next morning was chaotic, but he was starting to realize this was going to be his norm going forward. He really liked how these kids made him feel fulfilled. The bellhop helped get all of the luggage loaded up while he, Lip and Ian each grabbed a baby or toddler. Debbie and Carl kept trying to get the bellhop to let them ride on top of the luggage. With a quick look around to make sure nothing was left behind, they were on their way to the airport.
At the airport, Buck got the kids settled then exited the airplane to hand over his keys to the van. He was having it shipped to LA since it was the perfect size to fit 3 car sheets and 4 kids plus him as the driver. He then reentered the plane so that they could take off.
Chapter Text
Buck had never been so happy for a plane to land. He loves his kids but 4 hours on a plane with them and he felt like he was about to lose his mind.
“Hey! Everyone get ready to get off the plane.” Buck yelled over the noise of 7 kids. “We have a limo waiting for us”
“A limo!” screamed Debbie and Carl excitedly.
Lip and Ian both snickered at the pained look that appeared on Buck's face. Debbie and Carl’s screams plus the cries of the 3 younger kids was making his head hurt.
“Yes, a limo. It’s the only thing that I could get a driver for that would fit all of us. Take your stuff down the stairs and wait for everyone else to get off the plane. If you leave the area around the stairs you won’t be allowed to use the pool for the next 2 weeks. Don’t argue with me Carl.” Buck said wearily.
Buck then picked up Maeve to try to settle her down. He saw Lip pick up Sorcha and Ian pick up Liam to do the same thing. Once the 3 kids were no longer crying they left the plane. Carl and Debbie were standing on either side of the stairs making faces at each other. Buck was just relieved they weren’t physically fighting with each other. Carl got way too much enjoyment out of tormenting Debbie.
“This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” Debbie exclaimed, while trying to break any thing she could in the back of the limo.
“Debbie and Carl, if you sit down and stop trying to break stuff I’m going to make you do the dishes for the next week.. We’ll be home soon and then you can play in the wading pool to get some of your energy out.” Buck said.
Lip and Ian were just as excited to ride in a limo but were better behaved. Buck breathed a sigh of relief as they pulled into the driveway of their new house.
“This is where we live?” Ian asked in awe.
The other kids were staring out the windows in silence. Buck knew that wouldn’t last long. His kids didn’t know how to be silent for long.
Lip and Ian, trying to shock the neighbors, started calling him dad. The others followed their lead so sometimes he was dad and other times he was Buck. It still amazes him sometimes that a few months ago he was alone and now he was the father of 7 kids. (Once the adoptions were finalized.)
As they excited the limo, the kids kept looking around trying to see everything all at once. The house was a typical California Spanish style home. The kids were used to the traditional style of homes in Chicago so this house was definitely a shock to their systems. The limo driver, Lip, Ian and Buck unloaded all of the luggage and babies into the foyer of the house. Buck gave the limo driver a large tip since she had to deal with all of Gallagher's.
“Lip and Ian, your rooms are on the second floor. The stairs are on the other side of the kitchen.” Buck told them as he started down the left hallway carrying the twins to their room. Debbie, Carl and Liam follow behind him.
After laying Maeve and Sorcha in their cribs, he then took the kids to Debbie’s room so that she could start unpacking. Debbie’s room was a pale lavender with white trim. It was set up currently for a 10 year old but could easily be transformed into a room for a teenage girl.
Leaving Debbie in her room, Buck took Carl across the hall to a room that was painted green and blue. It was set up with a more nautical theme then Buck would have expected but he had given the kids permission to tell the decorators exactly how they wanted their rooms set up.
Taking Liam’s hand he walked him to the door across from the twins. Buck had his room set up with a Thomas the Train theme since that was Liam's favorite cartoon currently. He had a toddler bed set up rather than a crib since Liam was already crawling out of his crib. Liam, seeing his room decided he wanted to play with his new trains rather than follow Buck.
Buck stopped in at the pink and yellow nursery to grab a baby monitor then headed to the foyer to grab his luggage. His room was done in soft blue with grey and white accents. He quickly unpacked his clothes, throwing the dirty clothes in his hamper. Deciding the kids would be hungry, he headed to his newly remodeled kitchen. He was very impressed with how it looked.
Buck started opening drawers and doors to see where everything was. He also explored his walking pantry. Being rich has its advantages, he thought. Grabbing some cold cuts and cheese from the fridge he made sandwiches for every one. He also grabbed some cut melons and baby carrots to go with lunch. Taking everything out to the table by the pool he called everyone one to lunch.
He was headed back into the house to get Liam when he heard Lip and Ian thundering down the stairs.
“Did you know there is another bedroom and bathroom upstairs?” Lip asked Buck.
“There should be 2 bedrooms and 2 baths upstairs.” Buck stated, confused.
“There are 3 bedrooms and 3 baths. There is also another living room up there.” Lip informed him.
Buck headed up the stairs to look at the second floor. He had been told it was a large attic which is why he had rooms built there for the two teenagers .
Buck was amazed when he reached the top of the stairs and could see that there were indeed what appeared to be 4 doors facing an entertainment area. Checking doors he found Lip and Ian’s rooms to the left of the family room. Crossing to the right he found what appeared to be a guest room. Opening the last door he realized it was a storage room that if need be could be transformed into another guest room. He also found that the two guest rooms shared a bathroom. Buck had been told it was a basic attic. This wasn’t a basic attic. His 5 bedroom 5 bath house was now a 9 bedroom 8 bath house.
As he descended the stairs, he told Ian “I feel like I need to give the contractor another bonus. He’s put in enough rooms that everyone can have their own and we would still have guest rooms.”
“I thought you already gave him and the decorator a bonus.” Ian said amused.
“I did but the did a damn good job making this place perfect for us.” Buck stated.
“Buck, didn’t you ask why it was costing so much to do renovations?” Lip asked, leaning against the kitchen island.
“Not really, I just told my financial advisor that if they hit $500,000.00 then he needed to step in. The total for everything was a little over $489,000.00.” Buck said sheepishly.
“I’m so glad someone else is watching your money.” Lip said appalled.
“Smartass.” Buck said, offended.
“Come on Liam. Let’s go eat. We don’t have to put up with this.” Buck exclaimed, swinging Liam up into his arms.
“Food” Liam shouted.
They headed out to the table, teasing each other.
“What’s that for?” Carl asked after taking a bite of his sandwich.
Buck, looking where he was pointing said “That’s the pool house. I had it made into a two bedroom guest house for the nanny.”
“Nanny?” asked Debbie.
“I’m going back to work in 2 weeks and you kids can’t be here without an adult. I’m interviewing for a nanny tomorrow. I may need to hire 2 since there are so many kids.” Buck explained.
The kids instantly started arguing that they were old enough to take care of themselves and they didn’t need a nanny. Buck let them get it out of their systems for a few minutes.
“This isn’t up for discussion. I’m not Monica or Frank. I’m not leaving you here without adult supervision. You are all still kids and you are going to just have to deal with me being a hard ass about your safety.”
Before they could start arguing with him, twin cries came from the baby monitor. Passing Liam off to Lip, Buck headed into the nursery to change and feed the twins. He headed to the living room with the girls and found Carl playing cars with Liam on the floor. Debbie was playing with some dolls while Lip and Ian were watching Pitbulls and Paroles on tv. Setting the girls in their travel cribs Buck sat down to enjoy some time with all of the kids.
After ordering tacos for dinner, Buck got Liam bathed and into bed. He then made Debbie and Carl take showers, brush their teeth and get into bed. He told Lip and Ian they had to be in bed no later than 10:30 or he would take their phones away. He took a shower and got ready for bed after putting the baby monitor on his nightstand.
Now that he was in his room without kids, Buck spent the next half hour looking at his phone. He hadn’t heard from any of his supposed family in 3 months. As he lay there spiraling he kept wondering if he could even call any of them his friends or family. Deciding to worry about everything later, Buck slowly fell asleep.
A few hours later, after Buck had fed and changed the twins, he returned to his bed to find the left side had been taken over by Liam.
“ I’s sleep here.” Liam said, tiredly.
Buck crawled back into bed, reached over to cuddle Liam and they both went back to sleep.
Chapter Text
Buck woke up to a little body lying on top of him. Kissing Liam on the head, he laid in bed thinking about what he had to do today. He realized after about a minute that he could hear snores coming from two other people in the room. Lifting his head slightly, he saw Carl sprawled on the other side of the bed and Debbie sleeping on the couch in his room. He was slightly amused that none of them had made it through the night in their own rooms. Hopefully they will get comfortable soon. He figured he would enjoy the company while it lasted. He decided to relax for a little bit longer than he would go check on the twins. He was surprised he hadn’t heard them crying yet. Several minutes passed while he was enjoying the peace and quiet.
“Shhh, princess” Buck heard from the baby monitor. “We don’t want to wake anyone else up>”
Realizing Lip was up taking care of the twins he moved Liam to the bed next to Carl and quietly exited the room. He made his way to the nursery to find Lip and Ian each holding a baby while quietly feeding them.
“Thank you both for getting up with them. I really appreciate all the help you have both given me in the past few months.” Buck said softly so that he didn’t disturb the two girls. “I’m interviewing a few people for the nanny position today. Hopefully I find someone who will jive with the rest of the family.”
“Are you really going to get two nannies? Lip and I can take care of ourselves.” Ian said indignantly.
“Yes, my friend Carla found a few people for me to interview. There is a couple who she thinks would work best. They have a 9 year old girl so I’m hoping they work out so that Debbie will have someone to be friends with. If they don’t work out then she will send me another couple that she’s known for years. They don’t have any kids.” Buck explained, straightening up and walking to Ian so that he could put Maeve back in her crib. After giving her a brief cuddle.
“Go back to bed Ian, I can see that you are still really tired. After you put Sorcha in her crib, you should go back to bed also Lip. I know teenagers sleep more than you two did.” Buck stated.
Ian yawned and headed back up the stairs, presumably to go back to bed. Lip was a little slower, cuddling Sorcha for a few more seconds before putting in her crib and heading back to bed.
Buck headed to the kitchen to start some coffee and see what he wanted to make for breakfast. Grabbing a cup of coffee he sat at the island and looked at his phone. After his last fight with Maddie he had blocked her and Chimney so that he didn’t have to deal with their bullshit. He couldn’t believe how entitled Maddie had been after she found out he had his inheritance. He hadn’t been happy with her before he left LA due to her attitude about his returning to work as a firefighter then her attitude about the lawsuit. She had somehow found out he had access to his inheritance and had decided he needed to give her all of the money. She had a lawyer contact him the same day of Michael and Jess’s funeral to have him sign paperwork giving her everything he had been left with. He’d sent the lawyer packing and the next day contacted his uncle John to find out what all he had been the recipient of in his grandparents will. He originally thought it was just money, however after his discussion with John, he found out that he had money, two houses in Pennsylvania and Colorado plus 50% interest in the transportation company John and his grandfather Lewis had started.
To get rid of Maddie and her demands, he transferred the title of the Pennsylvania house to her. Buck refused to return to Pennsylvania while his parents were still living there so he had no use for the house. That wasn’t enough for Maddie, she wanted everything. After she and Chimney had left numerous nasty messages and text on his phone he sent a text stating he was blocking them and not to contact him ever again. He was sad at first because he had missed his sister but after a few weeks realised that without Maddie nagging him, he was able to relax.
As he sipped his coffee, Buck reflected on how much his life had changed in the last 2 months. He wasn’t sure how things would go once he went back to work in 2 weeks but he knew it would be interesting. He would still be with the 118 but he would be on B shift since A shift was still going through retraining. Hopefully, with the fallout that had happened from the investigation into the 118 things would work out okay.
Looking at the clock on the stove, Buck realized he needed to get ready for the day then get breakfast made. He showered, shaved, bushed his teeth and styled his hair before putting a pan of bacon in the oven. He cut up a bunch of fruit and made some scrambled eggs with cheese. As he was setting the table, Liam came waddling out of his bedroom rubbing his eyes. Debbie and Carl followed shortly after. Asking Debbie to put the fruit on the table he got the eggs and bacon set out.
After eating, he put the leftovers aside for Lip and Ian to eat once they woke up. He then got Liam changed and dressed for the day. Debbie and Carl were playing in their rooms while Liam was playing with toys in the front room when Buck heard knocking on his front door.
“Hello, I’m Andrew Franklin and this is my wife Erica and my daughter Tristan. We are here to interview for the nanny positions.” Greeted a talk, black man with a friendly smile. His wife was a tiny Asian woman with the brightest green eyes Buck had ever seen. Their daughter was a mixture of their features sharing the green eyes her mother had.
Buck invited them in and offered them drinks. He called Debbie and Carl out to meet the Franklins. Tristan and Debbie hit it off and were soon leaving them all behind to go play in Debbie’s room. Carl sat on the floor to play with Liam while Buck conducted the interview. It didn’t take him long to decide that Andrew and Erica were perfect for their family. They both had degrees in teaching but had decided to leave teaching after Andrew was attacked by several of his students for not letting them have phones out during class. The attack scared Erica and Tristan so they decided as a family to do childcare instead of teaching. They seemed to enjoy the chaos that his kids engaged in which was a plus.
After showing them the poolhouse/guesthouse which had 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, it was decided that they would move in the following weekend. They were currently living with Andrew’s parents so didn’t have much to pack. They left shortly after the discussion about their pay and days off. Buck was relieved that one thing on his list was done.
Looking at the time, Buck decided that Lip and Ian had slept enough. He sent Carl and Debbie up to wake them up while he got Liam down for a nap. He then changed and fed both girls while LIp and Ian ate then went to get ready for the day. Letting Lip and Ian take the younger kids out to play in the pool, Buck sat down to figure out what else he need to do before he had to go back to work.
Chapter Text
Buck once again woke up with a small body lying on top of him. Looking around he was relieved to see that Debbie and Carl had slept in their own rooms. Gently moving Liam to the middle of the bed with pillows around him, Buck got up to start his day. Thankfully the van was being delivered today so he and the kids could get out of the house.
Going into the nursery he fed and changed both girls before taking them to the travel cribs set up in the living room. He then started a breakfast casserole then cut some more fruit up. While waiting for the casserole to finish cooking, Buck took his coffee into the front room. Both girls were awake so he spent time telling him the plans he had made for the day. He knows they are too young to smile but he swears they were both smiling by the time he went to get the casserole out of the oven.
Setting the casserole on the table to cool, he headed back to his bedroom to get Liam up. He opened his door to see Liam playing with a stuffed monkey on his bed.
“Are you ready to get up, Liam?” Buck asked, crouching down by the bed.
“Up! Food?” Liam asked.
“You can have some food after we change your diaper and wake up the others.” Buck said, scooping up Liam. They left the bedroom pretending Liam was an airplane.
Buck woke up Debbie and Carl, then told them to go wake up Lip and Ian. He proceeded to Liam’s room to get him changed and dressed.
After breakfast the van was delivered so Buck had everyone ready to go by 10 am. Deciding the easiest thing to do was take the kids to get their uniforms, he started the van and headed out. Buck should have realized that this was a bad idea.
“You want me to wear this? It’s ugly.” screeched Ian, making a face while looking at himself in the mirror.
“School uniforms are ugly. Everyone at your school has to wear the same thing. Deal with it.” Buck said exasperated
“Can’t I go to a public school?” Carl whined.
“No, I like the private schools you are all going to. They have smaller classes and more teachers so you will all get a good education. Stop squirming, Carl.” Buck sighed, already done with the day.
“This fucking sucks.” Lip growled while tugging on the polo shirt that was part of his uniform.
“Language.” Buck snapped. “You know I won’t put up with you swearing”
“You act like we haven’t heard that kind of language before.” Debbie said sassily.
“I don’t care if you’ve heard it before. You are not talking like that anymore. I’m not your other parents. I plan on being present and engaged in your lives.” Buck said tiredly. “Please let the nice man finish getting your measurements so we can go get something to eat.”
20 minutes later they finally left the uniform store. Buck had the beginnings of a headache. Who knew that the 4 older children would be the ones causing him the most problems today. The girls and Liam were perfectly behaved but the others made him want to pull his hair out by the time they were done.
Pulling up to a food truck grouping, Buck got the twins and Liam into a stroller then headed to the taco truck he could see. After he got himself some street tacos and Mexican street corn, he then moved the next truck and got Liam 2 waffles on a stick. He then let the others decide what they wanted. Once everyone had food they moved to a table to eat. They were right next to a playground so he let the kids play for a little bit while he changed and fed the twins.
An hour later they were back into the van headed towards JCPenney’s for new clothes that were not uniforms. Buck knew going to the mall with all of them was probably a bad idea but he wanted to get this out of the way before the weekend.
Four hours later and several thousand dollars lighter, Buck vowed to never go shopping with all of the kids at once ever again. Finally back in the van to head home, he looked in the back and saw kids faces peaking out from behind what looked like an explosion of shopping bags.
“I’m too tired to cook. What do you kids want for dinner?” Buck asked, while backing out of the parking spot at the mall.
The kids started arguing about what they wanted. Buck hoped they had settled on something by the time they got home. He was amused that Liam kept shouting out “Pizza” like he was trying to get his way by being the loudest.
Once home Buck told the kids to start taking the bags into the living room. He then grabbed the twins' carseats to head inside. He left Liam to annoy the others since he was dancing around the other kids singing “pizza, pizza, I want pizza” at them. He felt it was only fair that Liam got to annoy his siblings since the other 4 had annoyed him at the mall.
He got the girls changed and put into their travel cribs then collapsed in an armchair. Liam, deciding he was done tormenting his siblings, crawled into his lap and directed the older kids where to put the bags. Buck had to admit that he thought it was cute that the 1 ½ year old was bossing the other kids around and none of them were arguing with him. The kids all complained as they finally got all of the bags in the house. Buck decided to make them complain some more.
“What are you doing? Get busy. You need to take all of the clothes out of the bags and sort them into piles so that we can wash them. You then need to take your new toys to your rooms. The new laptops stay in their boxes until you are done.” Buck said gleefully. Knowing he was being obnoxious but thought it was payback for how they acted at the mall.
“Buck!” “Dad!”
Buck just laughed at the complaining voices. Liam laughed with him. Debbie was the first one to get up and start going through her clothes. Buck had to remind her that reds went in their own pile and jeans went in another. Once she had a pile of darks, whites, reds, colors and jeans she grabbed her bag with her new dolls and headed to her room. Lip looking at her piles, kicked Ian’s foot and the both added to the piles. Carl just laid on the floor, refusing to move.
“Carl, if you don’t do what I told you to do, I’m going to give your new toys to Liam.” Buck threatened.
“No! I’m getting it done.” Carl pouted.
While Carl was working on his stuff, Buck separated the new stuff he’d purchased for Liam, Maeve and Sorcha. Looking at the piles of clothes he realized that he was going to be spending hours doing laundry. Leaving Liam and Carl playing on the floor, he grabbed the first load and started the monumental chore.
Returning to the living room, he found all of the kids sprawled out setting up their new computers. Liam was trying to help Lip and Lip was getting frustrated. Buck scooped up Liam and headed towards the toys head purchased earlier.
“Look Liam, you’ve got your own computer.” Buck exclaimed, pulling out the box with the toddler laptop that taught letters and numbers.
Buck set Liam next to him with his “laptop”, watching as he squealed each time he pressed a button and the toy talked to him. He looked around the room at the occupied kids with satisfaction that they were all happy. He didn’t care that he was spoiling them. He just wanted them to know that they were important to him.
“Did we decide on dinner?” Buck asked the room.
“Pizza!” came from next to him.
“Okay, any other votes?” Buck laughed, looking at the other kids.
“We decided on chinese.” Lip said distractedly.
“Okay, I’ll get it ordered. You all have until the food gets here to play on your computers. After dinner I will be putting parental controls on all of your computers.” Buck said, pulling out his phone to make the order. His words caused instant complaining to ring out
“I put parental controls on the computers or I donate them to the local elementary school. Those are your choices.” Buck said firmly.
“Here” Carl said grumpily, handing his computer over.
By the time dinner arrived, Buck had set up parental controls on all of the computers. He was pretty sure Lip would find a way around the controls but he would keep an eye on his computer usage whether Lip liked it or not.
After dinner, he allowed them to play on their computers some more as long as they stayed in the living room. During this time he started another load of laundry, changed and fed the twins then played with Liam. Looking outside to see it was still nice out, Buck decided to take Liam swimming with him. The other kids quickly abandoned their computers to go swimming.
Buck was laying in bed, feeling content, when his door opened and he heard tiny footsteps. Looking at the end of his bed he saw Liam pulling himself up onto the bed.
“You know that you're going to have to sleep in your room at some time, right?” Buck asked Liam.
“No, I sleep in dad’s bed.” Liam mumbled as he collapsed in the middle of the bed already back to sleep.
Buck laughed silently as he moved Liam under the covers. He knew he should take Liam back to his room but he was enjoying the company.
*************************************************************************************************************
Buck woke the next morning with Liam sprawled on the other side of the bed, which he counted as a win since Liam wasn’t sleeping on top of him. He decided that today was going to be a lazy day at home just doing housework and hanging out with the kids.
Chapter Text
The Franklins had moved into the poolhouse on Friday night so that they could start early Saturday. Buck was surprised to wake up to the smell of breakfast on Saturday then realized that Erica or Andrew must already be up cooking. Looking to the other side of his bed he was shocked to see that Liam hadn’t snuck into bed with him. Feeling a little sad but also relieved that Liam seemed to finally be settling into their new house Buck decided to get up and see who was making breakfast.
“Good morning, Andrew” Buck mumbled on his way to the coffee pot.
“Good morning, Mr. Gallagher” he heard in return.
“Please call me Buck.” Buck stated as he took a sip of his coffee.
“Only if you call me Drew” Drew returned with a smile as flipped the french toast he was making.
“Drew, did your family get unpacked last night?” Buck asked, courious to see if they had already settled in or if the would need to finish today.
“We unpacked everything we brought last night. If we decide to bring anything else from storage it will be done slowly as we get used to the house. I wanted to thank you for giving us the poolhouse. Erica and I thought we would end up sharing a room with Tristan. You are the only potential employer we interviewed with that was willing to give us enough room for our daughter.” Drew explained.
“I originally thought I would have to hire two different nannies. I honestly hadn’t considered a married couple with a child until Carla mentioned you and your wife. I’m glad the pool house is working out for you. Let me know if there is anything you need.” Buck said.
“I wanted to talk with you and Erica about Tristan’s schooling. As part of your employment package I stated that I would pay for her schooling. I would be happy to enroll Tristan in the same private school as my kids. I know that you currently home school her.” Buck stated while flipping the bacon and sausage Drew had in the oven.
“Erica and I homeschool her because we didn’t live in the best neighborhood previously. I think she would love to go to school. Let me check with Erica and I’ll have an answer for you in a few hours.” Drew said, finishing up the french toast.
Buck and Drew finished preparing breakfast then woke the kids up to eat. Erica and Tristan came out of the twins room just as Debbie and Carl were stumbling out of their rooms.
After breakfast, as the kids were getting dress, Buck followed Drew and Erica into the kitchen to clean up.
“I wanted to talk with the two of you. I was going to do this later in the week however the suite I want is available today at the Disneyland resort. If we check in today by 11 am then we would have 4 days at Disneyland. Do you think you are up for it? I know you just started.” Buck explained while wiping down the counter tops.
“You want to take your kids, us and our daughter to Disneyland to stay for 4 days? Wouldn't it be cheaper to go just for the day?” Erica asked in surprise.
“My kids had a hard life before I got custody of them. I want to spoil them a little bit before school starts. When I explained that we were going to California to live, they talked about Disneyland for days. I just want to give them this experience.” Buck explained passionately.
“Sounds like you're as excited as the kids will be. I think Erica and I will be fine. Let's get the kids packed and head out.” Drew said, sounding excited.
“KIDS PACK A BAG FOR 4 DAYS. WE’RE GOING ON VACATION.” Buck yelled.
Liam came toddling into the room and held his arms up to be picked up.
“What a va…va…that word?” He asked, confused.
“It means we are going somewhere else and are going to have fun and play for a few days.” Buck told Liam as he carried him to his room.
Buck quickly packed bags for Liam, Maeve and Sorcha. He then headed to his room to pack a bag for himself. Placing Liam on his shoulders he headed back to get the travel cribs broken down and the stroller packed up. Thankfully Erica had grabbed everything else they would need and placed it in another bag.
Ignoring the kids, who were all asking where they were going, Buck started loading everything into the back of his van. Debbie decided to ride with the Franklins so that she and Tristan could play. The van finally loaded and the kids in there seats, Buck told the Franklins that he would meet them there. Disappointed groans were heard as the kids realized he wasn’t going to give them any hints. As he and the Franklins started the short drive to Anaheim, he thought, Disneyland here we come. Hopefully you are ready for the Gallaghers.
*************************************************************************************************************
Buck pulled into the parking lot for the Disneyland Hotel and the kids erupted in cheers. Letting the bellhops and valet’s empty the car, Buck grabbed Maeve and Sorcha. He told Lip and Ian to make sure they watched Carl and Liam. Seeing the Franklins and Debbie getting out of the car behind him, motioned for everyone to follow the bellhops into the hotel.
“Hello, I’m Evan Gallagher and I have a reservation for the Grand Villa suite.” Buck said to the front desk clerk.
“Of course Mr. Gallagher. I see that you have 3 children under the age of 2. Will you be needing cribs for them?” Buck was asked.
“No, I brought travel cribs so we should be fine with the suite as it is.” Buck stated
“Here is your packet for our amenities and your passes to the parks. If you have any questions or need anything please contact our concierge.” the desk clerk said perkily. “Jamal and David will show you to your suite. Enjoy your stay!”
Buck picked up Maeve while Erica grabbed Sorcha and Drew picked up Liam. They followed the bellhops to their suite with kids talking and pointing out everything they were seeing. Even Lip and Ian were excited about everything they were seeing. So much for being cool teenagers. Buck was enjoying watching them act like typical kids rather than mini adults.
“Woah, this is where we’re staying?” Debbie exclaimed in awe as they walked into their suite.
“Yes, you and Carl will sleep on those two daybeds, Lip and Ian will share one of the rooms with two beds, Drew, Erica and Tristan get the other room with two beds and Laim, Maeve Sorcha and I will be in the room with one bed.” Buck told everyone as the bellhops started unloading all of their luggage.
Arguments instantly started, Carl wanted to be in the same room as Buck and Liam while Debbie and Tristan wanted the twin beds. After discussing it with Drew and Erica, Buck decided to take the room with two beds so that Liam and Carl could share one bed while he slept in the other. Looking at the room he realized it was bigger than the room with the King size bed which made it easier to set up the travel cribs for the twins.
Meeting back in the living room, they decided to start their day at tinytoon town then they would branch out from there. Getting the kids covered in sunscreen and making them put on hats was a production. Putting the twins and Liam into a stroller they were finally ready to go. Buck was excited to see how the kids were happy and acting their ages.
Chapter Text
Buck was shocked at how fast the last week had gone by. The kids had a blast at Disneyland. The 4 days spent there was time well spent as far as he was concerned. School would start in two weeks so they were going to be with the Franklins while he went back to work. He was a little nervous about starting his shift today.
Pulling into the parking lot of the 118, Buck took a deep breath before leaving his truck. He grabbed his bag from the back and headed inside.
“Get changed and then come up for the morning briefing.” Buck heard once he was inside.
Buck headed into the locker room to store his stuff and change into his uniform. He took a deep breath and straightened his uniform shirt before leaving the locker room. He headed upstairs to the loft for the morning meeting unsure of his reception.
“Good morning, as you all know Buckley from A shift will be joining us for the next month. Please welcome him. The chore list is up, everyone needs to finish their chores before we do anything else. Buckley, I need to speak with you in my office before we get any calls. Everyone needs to introduce themselves after my brief meeting with Buckley. Get to work on your chores and stay safe on your shift.” Captain Lewis said to the crew. “Pannikkar, wipe down the counters here in the kitchen until Buckley and I are done with our meeting.”
Buck watches a young, Indian man jump at being address. He didn’t recognize him so thought he was a probie. Buck followed the captain to the office and took a seat when it was offered.
“Captain Lewis, my last name is Buckley-Gallagher. Captain Nash told me that I would have to just deal with only one name on my turn outs since I couldn’t have that long of a last name. I prefer to be called Gallagher. I’m in the process of having Buckley dropped from my name.” Buck told his new captain nervously.
“So Nash lied to you from the very beginning it sounds like. If you're wanting Buckley removed then I will see about getting you new turnouts that say Gallagher. I’m sorry that I didn’t notice what was going on with A-shift. The investigation brought a lot of things to light that the C-shift captain and I were not aware of and I feel like I have failed you and the others.I promise to pay attention going forward.” Captain Lewis, sounding disappointed.
“The reason I wanted to talk to you is that I did notice that you were in charge of training Diaz during his probation year. Usually you have to be on the job 3 years before you are in charge of training, however you seem to have a knack for it. Would you be willing to take on the training for Panikkar? He’s our probie but I don’t really have anyone who has the patience to teach him what he needs to know.” Captain Lewis asked.
“I would be happy to train Panikkar. Will he follow me to A-Shift when I go back?” Buck asked.
“He will not right away. He’s requested to take class to be a paramedic so he will hear for you to train as a firefighter for the next 4 weeks then he’ll head back to the academy for 4 months to take the classes to be a paramedic. I understand that you have duel certification plus SAR training so you should be able to be his trainer for everything.” Captain Lewis explained.
“Captain Nash has never let me use my paramedic training so I might not be the best person to train him on that aspect of the job.” Buck informed his new captain.
“Nash will have a lot to answer for once he’s allowed back on shift. He has another 4 weeks of suspension then he has classes for another 2 months before he will be back as captain. The interim captain is being decided now so that will be who you will report to in 4 weeks. I’ll make sure they know that you need to be utilized as a paramedic so that you can continue Panikkar’s training. If you have any questions or problems while on my shift please let me know.” Captain Lewis told Buck.
“Thank you for trusting me, Captain Lewis,” Buck said.
“Sam or Cap, I don’t expect you to call me captain lewis unless we are in front of the chief.” Sam explained.
“Panikkar, this is Firefighter Gallagher, he’s going to be your trainer. Once you're done with your paramedic training, you’ll be going to A-shift so that he can finish your training there.” Sam told Panikkar, who was waiting in the kitchen.
“Evan Gallagher, I go by Buck. Nice to meet you.” Buck introduced himself.
“Ravi Panikkar, nice to meet you too. Please call me Ravi.” Ravi said.
“Alright Ravi, I’m going to check the chore list. That’s where we will start. Certain chores have to be done a specific way so I will teach you how to do the chore I’m assigned each day. We will then go over everything else during any lulls in calls. While on calls just follow my lead.” Buck said, watching Ravi fidget nervously.
Buck and Ravi started chores, with Buck explaining why things had to be done a certain way. After chores Buck started showing Ravi where everything was located on the trucks. While training Buck noticed a few faces he wasn’t familiar with. They introduced themselves and explained that they were from the 136 and were assigned to 118 until their fire house could be rebuilt.
Buck and Ravi quickly fell into a rhythm. Buck was impressed at how fast Ravi was absorbing the information he was learning. When the bell rang and they had to leave for a call, Ravi followed his instructions, didn’t argue and treated him with respect. The rest of the b-shift treated him like a competent firefighter. It was a shock to Buck since he had been treated like an idiot by Bobby, Chim and Hen for so long that he forgot what it was like to be treated with respect.
*************************************************************************************************************
The next month flew by for Buck. The kids started school, the Franklins settled in and they were able to set up a schedule for everyone that worked. The twins were staying awake for longer each day and starting to exhibit their personalities. Liam shocked him by starting to read on his own. Buck figured he had a small genius on his hands. Thankfully Drew and Erica were up for the challenge of keeping up with Liam’s intelligence.
Buck would start back with A-shift in four days and he was a little nervous. He hadn’t heard from any of them since the start of the lawsuit. He knew that Chimney would have issues since Buck had blocked him and Maddie. He figured Hen would follow Chimney’s lead like she usually did. He wasn’t sure what was going on with Eddie but since Eddie had blocked him on his phone months ago he was pretty sure they were only colleagues now.
Buck headed towards the kitchen to make pancakes for the kids. The older kids were all getting ready for school and Erica was getting the twins ready for the day. He placed Liam on the counter next to him as he started the pancake batter.
“Liam, what should we do today? Do you want to go to the library with me later?” Buck asked.
“Books?” Liam asked excitedly.
“Books and story time” Buck said amused by how excited Liam got just from the promise of story time and new books.
“Are you getting new books today?” Lip questioned as he bound into the kitchen.
“Books!! Awnd stowies!” Liam exclaimed, excitedly bouncing on the counter.
Lip picked up Liam and started to tickle him as he watched Buck make pancakes. Setting Liam on the floor so he could go tell Ian about going to the library, Lip moved to the sink to get the fruit into a bowl and onto the table. Debbie and Carl set the table then moved to play with Ian and Liam while waiting for the rest of breakfast.
“Are you going to keep us a secret when you go back to your normal shift?” Lip ask, carefully.
“I think I’m going to see how things go for the next few shifts. I don’t really trust them with your kids' well being. I don’t want them to make any of you feel uncomfortable. The seven of you are my main priority. If things are okay then I’ll tell them about you. If things go the way I think it will, then I’m not telling anything about my personal life.” Buck told Lip as his finished the pancakes.
“You’re not expecting a good outcome are you?” Drew asked as he and Tristan sat at the table for breakfast.
“No, I’m not. I think my sister’s boyfriend is going to cause problems. I’m hoping he doesn’t get fired for his attitude but I’m not going to be surprised if it happens.” Buck told him as he cut up Liam’s pancake and put fruit on his plate.
“What about the others on your shift?” Ian asked as he speared a strawberry with his fork.
“I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Do you still want to join the flag football team?” Buck asked, looking at Ian.
“Yeah, if that’s okay with you.” Ian responded, looking at Buck hopefully.
“Of course it’s okay. I’ll call the school after breakfast to find out what all we need to do to get you signed up. I’m pretty sure there will be a fee for the uniforms. Hopefully they will let me pay it over the phone or online. Make sure you get me a list for the games so I can make sure I have those days off or I trade hours with someone.” Buck was ecstatic that Ian was starting to settle in and was comfortable enough with him to ask to join an after school team.
“Since you’re saying yes to Ian, can I join the robotics team at school? There is a fee of $200.” Lip asked, bitting his lip.
“I’ll call you school after I’m done with Ian’s and get the fee paid.” Buck said, smiling at Lip.
He watched as Lip and Ian grinned at each other. He was a little sad that Monica and Frank would never get to see their kids they way he did but also feeling blessed to have these chaotic children in his life.
Buck waved goodbye to the van as Drew took the kids to school. He then spent the next hour on the phone with two schools getting everything set up for Lip and Ian. He then packed up Liam and headed for the local library.
“Books, books, books” Liam sang from the back seat of the truck as they turned into the library parking lot.
Buck lifted Liam out of the back of the truck and set him on the ground, holding onto the back of his shirt so he didn’t go running across the parking lot without him. Walking into the library with Liam vibrating in excitement next to him, Buck headed straight to the children’s section. He let Liam pick out 5 books then steered him towards the story section as story time was about to start.
Once done at the library, Buck and Liam ran a few more errands before stopping for tacos for lunch. By the time they go home, Liam was asleep in his carseat so Buck just carried him and his new books into his bedroom for a nap. Buck decided to spend time with the girls before the older kids got home and the house exploded with noise.
Buck spent the rest of the day helping with homework and entertaining kids. He felt like he was in his element. He used to think that firefighting was all he had but now he was happier spending time with his kids.
*************************************************************************************************************
The four days passed way quicker than Buck was expecting. He went back to A-shift in the morning and was trying to calm the butterflies in his stomach. His door opened and he felt the other side of his bed dip as Lip laid down next to him.
“Are you okay?” Lip asked.
“Not really.” Buck answered.
“If it doesn’t work out, what are you going to do? You don’t really have to work.” Lip said.
“I’m not sure. I’m hoping that things will be okay but I’m also bracing for things to be horrible. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Are you sleeping in here tonight?” Buck asked, rolling to his side so he could look at Lip.
“No, I just wanted to check on you. You got really quiet after dinner.” Lip explained.
“Alright, well you should get some sleep since you have school tomorrow. Goodnight. I love you.” Buck said.
“I love you too.” Lip responded, shocking Buck since that was the first time Lip had said it back to him. He watched as Lip slipped out of the room then decided he should try to get some sleep even though he was now feeling wide awake.
Chapter Text
Buck stood in his kitchen, drinking coffee on his first day back to the 118. His thoughts had been unsettled since he woke up but as he watched his kids enter the kitchen to start their days, his mind calmed. It was amazing to him that after so few months his kids could bring his thoughts to a stand. Lip and Ian leaned against him from either side. Not hugging him because they were teenagers but as close as they came.
“You’re going to be okay,” said Ian soothingling.
“If they’re mean to you we’ll come kick their asses,” Lip declared ferociously.
“Language,” Buck murmured, smiling into his coffee.
Buck kissed the sides of their heads, despite their protestation. Telling the other kids goodbye and doling out more kisses, he headed to his truck to begin his shift.
*************************************************************************************************************
Pulling into the firehouse parking lot, Buck could see Han, Wilson, Diaz, Smitt, Quintana, Ortiz, West and Massey’s vehicles. He knew it was going to be a bad day. Han would try to start something because Buck had blocked both him and Maddie. Buck had already decided to fall back on his military training. He wasn’t taking shit from anyone. Parking, he grabbed his bag and headed inside.
“WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? YOU THINK YOU CAN WALK IN HERE LIKE YOU HAVEN’T DONE ANYTHING WRONG?” Han screamed as he started toward Buck.
“HOWARD HAN” Boomed behind Buck. “YOU SAY ONE MORE WORD AND I WILL FIRE YOU”
Turning Buck was surprised to see the new chief Alan Simpson. Walking next to him was a tall black man who was missing an arm. His uniform said Captain on it. Behind them were 2 other people who Buck didn’t recognize.
“EVERYONE LINE UP” Chief Simpson yelled.
Within seconds every firefighter was lined up in front of the group from headquarters. Quintana stood to the right of Buck, Smitt to the left. Ortiz, West and Massey put themselves in between Buck and the other three. It was clear to anyone looking that they didn’t trust them around Buck. Buck was touched that they were standing up for him. He hadn't expected anything positive from anyone since he was the reason Captain Nash was suspended.
“Listen up everyone. I’m only saying this once. If there is any retaliation doled out to Firefighter Gallagher then you will lose your job. The A-shift of the 118 is currently the embarrassment of the LAFD. This is Captain Ronnie Cooper, he is the captain of the 136. He will be the captain here while Captain Nash is out on suspension. He will remain as co-captain for the first 3 months Nash is back. He will be reporting any issues back to headquarters. You are all being watched. Fuck this up and I will fire you and make sure you can’t be hired at any firehouse in the country. DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?” Chief Simpson stated, screaming the last sentence to make sure everyone was paying attention.
Everyone nodded, shocked at how angry the chief looked.
“Howard Han, you will report to headquarters tomorrow morning at 8 am. You are suspended for the day. Go home.” Chief Simpson said, glaring at Han.
“WHAT? WHY ARE YOU SIDING WITH THAT TRAITOR? HE DESTROYED ALL OF OUR LIVES WITH HIS LAWSUIT.” Han screamed.
“GET OUT OF THIS FIREHOUSE. IF YOU DON’T LEAVE I WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED!” Chief Simpson yelled back. He looked pissed.
Han left but not before trying to kick Buck on his way out. Smitt got in his way and stopped him by pushing him towards the doors.
“Chimney didn’t do anything wrong. Buckley should be suspended for what he did” came from Wilson.
“His name is Gallagher, which you’ve known since he started. Stop calling him Buckley. Nash should never have forced him to use a name that he requested not to be called. Howard Han is about to be fired for his transgressions. Keep up the attitude, Wilson and you will join him in the unemployment line. Do you understand?” Chief Simpson threatened, getting right up in Wilson’s face.
Wilson nodded her head, realizing she was in trouble.
“I require a verbal response, paramedic Wilson.” Chief Simpson stated firmly.
“Yes sir. I understand.” She responded.
“Now that we have established that this shift is on the shit list, let's get the rest of the introductions out of the way. Captain Cooper, if you would please introduce the firefighters behind you?” Chief Simpson asked politely.
“Of course, Chief Simpson. These are firefighter Jenna Calley and paramedic Pete Logan. They are from the 136 like I am. They will be working shift A here while we wait for the 136 to be rebuilt.” Captain Cooper introduced, smiling proudly at his people.
“I know that this transition may be hard on some of you, however I expect professionalism at all times. If you cannot act with civility in this house then you can expect to be written up and transferred. I will not give second chances. The only reason you are being given another chance is because Gallagher requested that none of you lose your jobs. Treat each other with respect or expect to be leaving the 118.” Captain Cooper bluntly stated, glaring at Wilson.
“I’ll be leaving you with your interim captain. Do not make me have to deal with any of you again.” Chief Simpson growled as he left.
“Every morning we will line up for a roll call. We will then practice drills unless we are on calls. Your shift has proven they can’t be trusted. I realized that it wasn’t all of you, however you are all going to be distrusted due to the actions of a few. Wilson, I know all about your attitude towards anyone who is white. I will not tolerate it. As a black man, I find your actions reprehensible. You will shut up and do your job or I will have you fired with cause which means you won’t even be hirable at a private EMS company. I have never been so ashamed of a black woman as I am of you. Keep your prejudices to yourself.” Captain Cooper barked the last part at Wilson.
The next two hours were spent doing drills. Captain Cooper then had them shower and meet in the kitchen to go over chore assignments. There was no talking allowed during this time. Once chores were given out, Captain Cooper told them that they were going back online in 10 minutes.
The rest of the twelve hour shift, when not on a call, they were cleaning. No talking was allowed and they weren’t allowed any downtime. Captain Cooper made sure that they understood that they were all being punished for Han’s attitude. He explained at the top of his lungs, several times throughout the day, that if one of them screwed up then all of them would suffer the consequences.
Buck was relieved when the shift was over. He knew that things on A shift were going to be bad but he hadn’t expected the shift that had happened. Ortiz, Massey and West all walked Buck out, telling him how glad they were that he had come back to A-shift and how they were relieved to see him walking without a limp. They all asked how he was doing and if they needed to do anything to help him accommodate any issues with his crush injury.
Buck was shocked. Even though he had enjoyed his time on B-shift none of them asked about his injuries or if he needed help. He told them that sometimes he had issues and if it happened while on shift he would let them know. He saw Wilson glaring at him as she left. Massey told him to ignore her. She had been a bitch to everyone except Han for a while now.
Buck headed home to decompress with his kids.
*************************************************************************************************************
The next morning was spent helping the kids get ready for school before he drove into work. He met Diaz in the locker room. As he was getting changed he notice the side eye he was getting.
“Is there a problem?” He asked as he finished lacing his boots.
“Why did you stop responding to Chris’s messages? I thought you would at least speak to him.” Diaz said bitterly.
“I haven’t received any messages from you or Chris since the day after the tsunami. The few times I’ve tried to text you, I’ve received an undeliverable message.” Buck said back, confused.
“You blocked me.”
“I didn’t block you.” Diaz said just as confused.
He pulled out his phone to show Buck that he wasn’t blocked. Buck quickly realized that not only had he been blocked but it looked like the numbers for his number were transposed. He knew Eddie wasn’t the best with technology but he at least knew how to enter the numbers in correctly.
“Did you let someone else play with your phone? My number is blocked plus it looks like the numbers have been transposed so that you can’t contact me.” Buck explained to Eddie, handing his phone back.
Eddie stared at his phone in shock.
“How do I unblock you and fix your number?” Eddie asked as he stared at his phone in concentration.
Buck showed him how to fix his contact then suggested he check his other contacts. The next few minutes were spent fixing Eddie's contacts for his sisters and Tia Pepa.
“Who else has had access to your phone, Eddie?” Buck asked disturbed by what he was seeing. It was almost like someone went in and chose female names. His name was actually listed under my Bucky (He assumed it was Chris who set it at that).
“I’ve been seeing Ana Flores, Chris’s old teacher. I let her use my phone once while I was helping Chris with something. Do you think she did this?” Eddie asked, worriedly.
“I think that is a conversation you need to have with her. It looks to me like she’s trying to make sure you don’t have any contact with people she doesn’t approve of.” Buck said, baffled at the turn of events. “Let’s go line up for roll call. If Captain Cooper allows it later, we can call Chris after school and explain to him the issues with my contact on your phone.”
They headed out for roll call and noticed that Wilson wasn’t there.
“As you have all noticed, Wilson isn’t here today. She has been temporarily reassigned to the 122 for an attitude adjustment. She will be there for the next 6 months. If she doesn’t start following the rules then she will be moved to another station for a permanent assignment.” Captain Cooper explained to everyone after they lined up.
The bell rang right after that which set the tone for the rest of the day. Captain Cooper had to request that they go offline around 2 just so that they could eat lunch then they were back at it. Buck was convinced someone said the q word. They had 23 calls in a twelve hour shift. He and Eddie never got to call Chris but Eddie promised to call the next day since it was their day off so that Chris and Buck could talk. He also promised to speak with Ana to find out why she messed with his phone. It sounded like Eddie was going to be breaking up with her. Buck was just relieved to have his friend back.
As they were leaving they discussed Wilson’s move to the 122. Buck had to explain that Captain Sloan, Popachek and Levansen were all ex-military and ran their shifts like they were still drill sergeants. He and Eddie figured Wilson would be assigned to another house fairly quickly since she didn’t like being told what to do.
“Are you going to be okay with Bobby once he comes back?” Eddie asked as they walked to their trucks.
“I don’t know. It depends on how he acts. I’ve had crappy leaders before in the Seals and still managed to do my job.” Buck stated.
“Why haven’t you said anything about changing my last name?” He asked Eddie as he set his bag in the back seat.
“You told me about Bobby refusing to add Gallagher to your turnouts after you took Chris and I home after the earthquake. I noticed the first day back that your name was different when I was getting changed in the locker room. I just assumed you got one of the other Captains to change it.” Eddie revealed as he leaned against his truck.
“It wasn’t even hard. I just explained my issue and within a week had the correct name on my turnouts. I think Bobby did it deliberately to test me. I was kind of arrogant when I started but still he should have fixed my name.” Buck pointed out.
“Bobby has a lot to make up for. I didn’t realize until I talked to some of the others but he made a big deal out of my military service but ignored your, Smitt, Massey and Ramos’s service. I was really uncomfortable with the questions when I first started. I just don’t understand his reasoning for doing a lot of what he did.” Eddie revealed.
“I think only Bobby is going to be able to give us those answers and I’m not sure he will. See you in a few days. Don’t forget to call tomorrow with Chris. I miss talking with him.” Buck said as he started his truck. He waved as he exited the parking lot to head home.
Chapter Text
Buck woke up with Liam once again sleeping next to him. He was surprised as Liam had been sleeping in his own room for quite a while. Concerned, he watched him sleep for a few minutes before he gently woke him up.
“Good morning little man. Is there a reason you're in my bed? Did you have a bad dream?” Buck asked kindly.
Liam cuddled up next to him and told him about the monster in his closet. They spent the next few minutes cuddling.
“You can always come to me if there are monsters. I’ll check for monsters tonight before bed.” Buck promised.
Liam started jumping on the bed singing “Up, up up” “Food, food, food” over and over again. Buck started laughing as he got out of bed. He caught Liam mid jump and tickled him all the way to the kitchen.
“Good morning, Erica” Buck laughed as they entered the kitchen.
“Good morning Buck and Liam. Drew is getting Maeve and Sorcha ready for the day. I’m going to finish breakfast then go wake up the other kids. Do you have any plans for the day?” Erica asks while plating the ham steaks she had just finished cooking.
“Not really, just spending time with the kids. Maybe taking the kids to the movies. I know there is a movie in the park this evening. I thought we could take some snacks and blankets. Would that be something you and Drew would like to take Tristan to?” Buck asked, setting Liam in his high chair.
“How would you feel about taking the older kids while Drew and I stay home with the twins and Liam? I don’t think they will do well in that type of setting yet.” Erica said as she placed a plate with fried eggs on the table.
“Sounds like a plan. I’ll take the kids to get snacks then we’ll head to the park at about 6. Are there any snacks you don’t want Tristan to have?” Buck asked.
“Preferably something other than just sugar” Drew stated, going into the living room to place twins on their tummy time mats.
Hearing the rest of the kids, they finished moving the rest of breakfast to the table. Buck asked them if they had anything planned for the day. Lip and Ian admitted that they had some homework they needed to finish. Debbie, Tristan and Carl saying they just wanted to go swimming in the pool.
“I thought we could go to the movie in the park tonight. We would leave about 3 so that we can stop to get snacks then head to the park to get a good spot. Does anyone have any objections?” Buck asked.
Cheers were heard from all the kids. Breakfast was finished quickly and the kids went to finish homework or play depending on who they were. Buck headed to the kitchen to spend some time with the girls. They were starting to stay awake for longer and seemed to love listening to him talk. Liam followed behind so that he could sit next to Buck and read his library books.
The morning passed quietly then Bucks phone rang right after he got the younger kids down for a nap. He saw that it was Eddie so headed towards his bedroom before answering. Even though they were talking again he wasn’t sure he was ready to introduce his kids to Eddie. He kept hearing in the back of his mind “Your exhausting”.
“Hey Eddie” he answered, sitting in a chair by his fireplace.
“Hey Buck, would you be willing to take Chris for the night? I need to have a conversation with Ana and I don’t want him around for it since I’m pretty sure there is going to be yelling.” Eddie asked.
“Overnight or just for a few hours?” Buck responded with a question.
“I think Chris would love to have a sleepover with his Buck if that’s okay with you.” Eddie said.
“I would love to spend time with Chris. What time do you want me to pick him up?” Buck asked while furiously trying to figure out how to keep his kids a secret from Eddie.
Eddie sighed in relief and said “Thank you. He’s with Tia Pepa for the day. I got asked to cover a shift for West. His wife went into labor about 3 hours ago.”
“We’ll have to celebrate with him next time we are all on shift together. I’ll pick Chris up from Pepa’s about 4. There is a movie in the park that’s showing the first Toy Story so I see if he wants to go to that.” Buck said, already making plans in his head. He was pretty sure Carl and Chris would get along great.
“Thanks man. I really appreciate you doing this. Did you want to get a beer with me tomorrow night? I’m pretty sure I can get Pepa to watch Chris while we go out.” Eddie said, sounding nervous.
“Sure, sounds like a plan. Will you let Pepa know what time I will be there to pick up Chris?” Buck said hopefully. He really missed his friend and hoped they could repair their friendship.
“Great! I better get Chris to Pepa’s. I’ll let Pepa know what time to expect you.” Eddie stated.
“Stay safe and I’ll see you tomorrow.” Buck said, hearing the bell go off in the background.
*************************************************************************************************************
Several hours later, Buck pulled into Pepa’s driveway with the kids all chattering away in the back of the van. Reminding the kids that he will be back in a few minutes and to not make Chris feel weird about his crutches, Buck exited the van and headed towards the door.
“It’s good to see you again, Evancito” Pepa said as she opened the door.
“It’s good to see you also, Pepa” Buck said, nervously unsure if Pepa knew why he and Eddie hadn’t been talking.
“Come in. Chris is in the living room. I haven’t told him you were coming so that you could surprise him.” Pepa said
“Hey superman. I’ve missed you.” Buck said softly.
“BUCKY” Chris yelled in surprise, diving into Buck’s arms. “I missed you so much, Bucky”
“I missed you too. You’ve grown so much.” Buck said, holding Chris as he cried.
Buck sat on Pepa’s loveseat holding Chris. He whispered “I love you Chris and I miss you so much. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to see or talk to you in a long time
After Chris stopped crying, Buck helped him wipe his face and straighten his clothes. Pepa came back in the room caring Chris’s overnight bag and set it by them.
“Alright, superman, we are going to watch Toy Story at the park tonight and then you are going to stay the night with me. I have a great surprise for you so how about we head out now.” Buck said, still holding Chris close.
“Yey” Chris cheered, grabbing his crutches to stand up.
“Bye Tia Pepa. Thanks for watching me.” Chris said heading towards the door.
Buck laughed as he picked up Chris’s bag and thanked Pepa. He followed Chris out to his van.
“Chris, my surprise is that I adopted my nieces and nephews so most of them are in the van waiting to meet you. I hope you all like each other.” Buck said as he opened the sliding door to the back of the van.
“Hi Chris, I’m Carl,” Carl said eagerly, leaning over the empty booster seat to be the first person to welcome Chris. He was seated in his own booster seat. (Carl and Buck’s fight over the booster seat was loud but Buck won in the end much to Carl’s disgust.)
“Hi Carl” Chris said back shyly.
Buck helped Chris into the other booster seat and put his bag in the back. Starting the van and backing out of the driveway he was relieved to see the other kids introducing themselves and making Chris feel welcome. By the time they got to the park, Buck was having second thoughts about introducing Chris and Carl. They were obnoxious together. Who knew two little boys could cause so much havoc in a store. He felt bad for the clerk that had to wait on them and clean up the soda that was spilled on the floor.
Buck let the kids get whatever they wanted from the food trucks parked by the park for dinner and then they set up the two blankets to watch the movie with their snacks. Chris was the only kid who had seen Toy Story before so even the two teenagers put their phones away to watch the movie.
After the movie, Buck took the kids out for ice cream then home where he turned on Toy Story 2 in the living room. After popping some popcorn for the kids to enjoy, he checked on the twins then made his way into Liam’s room. Liam was awake, staring at his closet door like it was about to bite him. After proving there was no monsters in the closet, Buck scooped him up and took him to his room. Laying down with Liam, Buck quietly sang him to sleep. He then checked his phone to see a text from Eddie stating that he’d had to call the police and have Ana arrested. Buck quickly called Eddie.
“What happened?” Buck asked, concerned.
“She tried to stab me with a kitchen knife after I called her out on her lies. It go ugly fast.” Eddie said, sounding exhausted.
“Are you okay?” was Bucks shocked question.
“Yeah, I got the knife away from her before she was able to injure me and shoved her outside while I called the cops. Thankfully it wasn’t Athena who responded. She’s on her way to jail right now but based on her ranting and raving I wouldn’t be if they placed her on a psych hold.” Eddie explained. “I’ll tell you more about it tomorrow. I’m going to pack up the stuff she has here and set it by the door so I can drop it off tomorrow before going to Pepa’s for lunch.”
“I’ll let you do that. I’m glad you're okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.’ Buck said before ending the call.
Buck made the kids go to bed after the movie, well the younger kids. He knew Lip and Ian were probably going to play on their computers or watch another moving in the family room upstairs. Debbie and Tristan had a system already set up for their sleepovers so he just had to tell them to go to Debbie’s room. Carl asked if Chris could sleep with him so Buck helped get them settled in the bunk beds in Carl’s room. After tucking them in, checking on Debbie and Tristan and the twins, Buck headed back to his room to watch cooking videos on his phone while laying next to Liam in his bed.
*************************************************************************************************************
The next morning was spent having fun with the kids in the pool. They had all had swimming lessons in the last few weeks so Buck spent most of his time playing with Liam in the kiddie end of the pool. Chris loved the pool. He seemed to move easier in it than he did on land. Buck saw a lot of sleepovers in his future so that Chris and Carl could play in the pool.
After lunch, he sat Chris down and explained that his kids were a secret. He didn’t tell Chris he couldn’t talk about them, just that he hadn’t told anyone about them. Chris nodded and said he would try not to say anything about them being Buck’s kids. Buck told him that he didn’t have to keep them secret, he just hadn’t told anyone and he didn’t want Chris to be surprised if no one knew who he was talking about.
Around 2 he packed Chris up to take him back to Pepa’s. Carl made him promise that Chris could come back soon because he and Chris had decided they were best friends. Buck promised to see if Chris could come over next weekend even if it was just for a few hours Friday night. He and Chris met Eddie in the driveway of Pepa’s. Eddie greeted them both then helped Chris into the house and thanked Pepa for watching him.
Eddie admitted as they were leaving that he didn’t want anything alcoholic right now so they agreed to meet at a diner they both loved.
It took a few hours and several cups of coffee to talk through everything. Buck felt like things were going well but something still held him back from telling Eddie about his kids. He figured it would take a little bit longer before he trusted Eddie enough.
Chapter 14
Notes:
I'm sorry it took me so long to get this posted. I was dealing with some family issues. I hope you enjoy this chapter.
Chapter Text
Buck got up early and got ready. Today was Lip’s 15th birthday and he wanted to get started on his favorite breakfast. He still thought it was funny that Lip’s favorite breakfast oatmeal with pecans and blueberries, he always ate it with a piece of cinnamon toast and a glass of orange juice. Buck likes to tease him about having an old man taste in food.
Ian joined him in the kitchen a short time later. He was practically vibrating with excitement. He had made Lip some homemade trail mix and put it in a baggy yesterday while Lip was at his robotics club. The other kids had all made him cards while Ian was working on the trail mix. Ian made some joke about Lip needing fuel while he was geeking out about robots and coding.
Buck could hear the kids excitedly heading towards the kitchen so he made sure everything was set up on the table. Lip entered yawning and rubbing his eyes with the other kids behind him. Buck grabbed him in a hug and started dancing around with him singing happy birthday. The rest of the household joined in on both the singing and dancing.
Laughing, Lip broke free from Buck’s hold and told them that they all sucked while trying to avoid the others hugging him. Buck, Erica and Drew almost fell over laughing as the kids all tackled Lip and started tickling him. They had a fun, happy birthday breakfast before everyone went to get ready for the day.
Buck was a little nervous as they left the house. Today he was dropping Liam, Maeve and Sorcha off at a daycare so that Drew and Erica could go to Six Flags with the family. They made it to the daycare in what felt like record time. Buck really had a hard time leaving but he also noticed that Lip wasn’t any better than him. When they got back out to the van, Buck almost cried. It was one thing to leave the kids with the Franklins but it felt like his heart was breaking for leaving them with the daycare workers.
Taking a deep calming breath, Buck started the van and headed to pick up the first of Lip’s friends. After picking up all three boys they drove to Six Flags, Buck just knowing that at some point in the day he was going to have to ground at least one of his kids for doing stupid shit in a theme park.
7 hours later, Buck was ready to drop all his kids off at the zoo. He was pretty sure Drew and Erica felt the same way based on their expressions. Lip and his friends had spent most of the day trying to look down girls' and women's shirts while cracking juvenile, raunchy jokes. Carl puked on Taylor Kelly after going on a roller coaster he was told not to go on. Buck had to apologize to her while trying not to laugh because he felt it was divine justice for her crap with the 118. He got to watch Ian flirt with an older boy and realized that the talk he had been planning on having with him needed some tweeks to include boys. Debbie and Tristan were both grounded for going mean girls on another girl who had started her period. They had loudly pointed out the blood on her shorts then made nasty comments to her until she cried. Buck only caught the tail end of that but got to see Erica bawl them out and then refuse to allow them on rides for the last 2 hours of their stay. (He’d never seen Erica that mad before. She was kinda scary.)
Drew and Erica offered to pick the kids up from daycare and meet them back home, ignoring Tristan and Debbie as they complained about being forced to ride in separate vehicles. Thanking them for doing that, Buck got back in the car and asked Lip what he wanted to order for dinner since it was his birthday. After conferring with his friends, Lip decided he wanted tacos, enchiladas, empanadas and fried ice cream.
Buck called their favorite Mexican restaurant and placed an order that would be delivered to the house in 2 hours. Buck then started the trek back to home, taking short cuts through San Fernando and Burbank to cut down on the drive. It took them about an hour and a half to get home so Buck told the boys to go swimming. He told Debbie that she could go sit on her bed until dinner. Buck followed her into her room while she complained the whole way. She watched in shock as Buck packed up all her electronics and toys, leaving the furniture, clothes and books.
“You’re grounded for the next two weeks. No electronics, no toys, no swimming and no Tristan. You will be allowed out of your room to eat and do homework only. I am very disappointed in your behavior today. Bullying is never acceptable and you know this Debbie.” Buck told her sternly.
Debbie started crying and apologizing but Buck knew he couldn’t cave on this. He felt bad but he was also still really disappointed in how Debbie had been acting. Buck thought that the therapy he had the kids in was helping but it seems like Debbie was now acting out. He would have to speak with her therapist during some down time during his shift on Monday. Leaving the room he told her that she could still read the books on her shelves.
Leaving Debbie’s room he saw Drew depositing the twins in their playpen and watched Liam run out the door to jump in the pool. Buck watched as Ian caught Liam before he hit the water and made him take his clothes off and put on a pull up.
“I grounded Debbie to her room for the next two weeks. No electronics, no toys, so swimming and no Tristan. I told her that she could leave her room to eat and do homework. I know this is punishment for Tristan also but I wanted to make Debbie regret bullying that girl at the park.” Buck explained to Drew.
“Looks like we came up with the same punishment. The same thing applies to Tristan. I know we taught her better than that. Erica is cleaning out her room now. We are going to put her stuff in the trunk of the car.” Drew said, sounding frustrated.
“I put Debbie's stuff in the locking pantry. You can use that for Tristan’s stuff if you want rather than having it in the car.” Buck offered.
“Thanks. I’ll let Erica know.” Drew replied.
The doorbell rang signaling dinner was being delivered. They both went to the door to get the food. While Drew was setting everything out, Buck headed outside to get the boys. He also let Erica know that the food was here, finally telling Debbie that dinner was ready.
After dinner they did cake and presents, embarrassing Lip by singing happy birthday to him as the icecream cake he had picked out was set on the table in front of him. His face was very very red when he blew out the candles on top. They did presents next, he was touched by the kids' homemade gifts, sighed at the new clothes he received, excited at the new computer parts he received but it was fairly obvious that his favorite gift was the driver’s ed packet he received. He tackled Buck in a hug and kept saying thank you over and over again.
The kids, except Debbie, Tristan and the twins all headed upstairs to watch movies once they were done with presents. Lip scooped Lam up in his arms telling him he was going to spend the night with them upstairs making him happy to be included, Ian tugged Carl upstairs also. The adults cleaned up and got the twins ready for bed while Debbie and Tristan were sent back to their rooms.
Buck sank into his armchair in the living room and pulled out his phone. He had felt it going off several times during the day but ignored it so that he could enjoy time with his kids. He found a few texts from the Diazes and Carla, Chris and Carla wishing Lip a happy birthday which he forwarded to Lip’s phone. He also had several from Eddie who had picked up an extra shift. The text from Eddie shocked him.
From Eds:
I’m at the firehouse that Hen was transferred to.
OMG WHY IS SHE SAYING YOU STOLE MADDIE’S INHERITANCE?
I think she needs therapy. She isn’t making sense. I swear she’s acting like some of the soldiers I treated who had really bad PTSD.
I had to report her to the captain. I explained my observations and he agreed with me that she needs help.
She threw a fit in the middle of the station because they are making her get therapy. It was bad Buck, the other paramedics had to sedate her and took her to the hospital for a 5150.
I guess you're not around your phone. I’ll call you after I get off work.
Buck couldn’t believe what he was reading. He knew Wilson had issues from her previous captain but that didn’t explain what was happening with her now. He had thought they were friends before the lawsuit plus her and Karen had apologized for ignoring him after the tsunami. He had wondered if his sister and Han had been telling her lies and that was why she hated him all of a sudden. His shoulders slumped as he realized that his sister and her boyfriend were still trying to mess with his life. Buck composed an email to his lawyer explaining what had happened and asked him to go forward with the restraining orders against Maddie, Margaret and Philip Buckly plus Maddie’s boyfriend Howard Han. They had discussed it when he first talked about the issues he was having with his biological family. Looking at his phone he saw that Eddie was calling.
“Hey”
“Hey”
“So how did the rest of your shift go?” Buck asked.
“It sucked. I spent a lot of time correcting things Hen was trying to spread about you. I don’t understand why she was lying so much. It was weird. Do you know why she was saying you stole Maddie’s inheritance?” Eddie complained.
Buck sighed as he answered, “Our grandparents on our mother’s side died and left us each money. They left me more than Maddie which pissed Maddie off so she is telling everyone I stole her inheritance. She wanted me to sign my inheritance over to her so that she got all of the money and when I told her no she started harassing me. I finally had to block her and Han on my phone plus move to get them to leave alone. I haven’t had any contact with Maddie in 4 months and Han since that day at the firehouse.”
“Fuck, I didn’t know any of this was going on. I’m sorry I wasn’t around to defend you. I know you wouldn’t steal from Maddie. I can’t believe her and Chimney are pulling this bullshit.” Eddie said angrily.
“Maddie and Han have been making my life miserable since the truck bombing. I’m still trying to find out why she was in charge of my medical treatments. At the time, my brother Michael had my medical power of attorney not her. He should have been consulted. I didn’t find out until days later when I called him that he didn’t even know I was hurt. I’m having my lawyer look into it.” Buck explained.
“She wouldn’t let anyone else in the room with her while she was discussing your options with the doctor. I thought it was weird because you had told me about your brother so I thought he would be the person making decisions for you. Chimney and Bobby told me that you had changed your paperwork to Maddie. It sounds like that was a lie.” Eddie revealed.
“Fuck, they lied. I never changed my paperwork. Han and Nash both said that I changed my paperwork?” Buck questioned.
“Yeah, I think you need to speak with your lawyer again, Buck. I don’t like what this is implying. I know that the doctor was angry with Maddie and at one point I heard him shout that he wasn’t going to amputate your leg unless it was absolutely necessary. I think you should have them find out what went down at the hospital before your surgery and after your surgery. I know you complained about Maddie not letting you do anything after surgery. Could she have caused your blood clots?” Eddie asked, sounding frustrated and angry.
“I’ll call my lawyer on Monday and have him look into everything. If Maddie forged my paperwork with Han’s help then they are both going to jail. I’m not stepping in to help them. You don’t think they would have done anything the Hen do you? She hasn’t been acting like herself for months.” Buck pointed out.
“I’m going to call Karen and talk to her. I think she needs to have her blood tested. If Maddie and Chimney are willing to cause you to be more injured then you were then I wouldn’t put it past them to do something to Hen.” Eddie told him.
“My head hurts from just thinking this. I think I need to go to bed and think about it more tomorrow. You know it’s Captain Nash’s first day back on Monday, right?” Buck said, rubbing his forehead.
“If he tries anything he’s going to have to deal with the rest of us.” Eddie said protectively.
“Thanks, Eddie. I’ll see you on Monday. Enjoy your day off with Chris.” Buck said before hanging up.
Buck checked on Debbie and found her in bed reading a book. He told her he loved her and told her that she could read for another hour but then would have to go to bed. He looked in on the twins, kissing both of their heads after seeing they were both asleep. He then slowly crept up the stairs to see what the boys were doing. He found the older boys playing video games and Liam asleep on Lip’s bed.
“You all have until midnight then you need to go to bed. If you don’t then I will flip the breakers for the second floor so that everything turns off.” Buck said teasingly.
“We’ll go to bed at midnight.” Lip said, pouting a little.
“Good, I’m going to be in my room but if you need anything come get me. If you boys get hungry and want a snack, I left everything to make nachos in the fridge.” Buck said.
“Thanks Dad” and “Thanks Mr. Buckley” were chorused as he headed back downstairs.
He had just reached his room when he heard footsteps behind him. Turning he found Lip following him. Lip darted forward and hugged him.
“Thanks for the birthday party. I’ve never had one before.” Lip murmured softly.
“Happy Birthday, Lip. I’m really happy you had a good birthday. I know you think I say it a lot but I love you.” Buck replied, holding onto the hug as long as Lip would allow.
Lip finally squirmed away and headed back upstairs while Buck entered his bedroom feeling like he’d won the lottery. Buck was still surprised that all of these kids really liked him.
Chapter Text
Sunday was spent having fun with the kids except the hour and a half he spent on the phone with his lawyer. He was surprised his lawyer called him on Sunday and at the end of the call told him to go relax. The call went over everything that had happened recently plus sharing his concerns about Maddie and Han’s possible involvement in Hen Wilson's current predicament. His lawyer promised to get started on everything plus let a contact he had in the LAPD know that they needed to look into things with Wilson. He promised to see if they would be willing to run a comprehensive drug panel on her.
*************************************************************************************************************
Monday morning Buck woke up to Liam and Carl laying in bed next to him. He was a little surprised but then realized that they were probably worried about him going to work with Captain Nash. Buck hadn’t hidden any of the issues he had with the original 118 he had worked with. After waking them up, he got ready for work. Liam and the girls were going to daycare so that Drew and Erica could have a day off so Buck made sure everyone was ready to go and got them all out to the van. The shift today was only an 8 hour shift because it was Captain Nash’s first day back. Buck had set it up so that Lip would go get Liam and the twins then take an Uber home while Ian, Debbie, Tristan and Carl would ride the bus home. It was the first time he was trusting them to do everything by themselves.
Buck arrived at the firehouse and parked in the back not wanting to explain why he had a van. He sat there for a few minutes trying to psych himself up. He knew that Captain Nash was going to try something since Captain Cooper had a doctor’s appointment and wouldn’t be in until 10. Realizing he had 10 minutes before his shift started Buck forced himself out of his van and into the firehouse.
“BUCKLEY, YOU’RE LATE” Captain Nash screamed as soon as he walked in the bay.
Buck ignored him since he once again refused to call him by his real last name. He wasn’t going to play games with Nash and he wasn’t going to respond to him unless he called him Gallagher. Buck was headed for the locker room to get changed when he felt someone grabbed his arm and pull him backwards.
“WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? ARE YOU DEAF? I EXPECT YOU TO RESPOND TO ME WHEN I TALK TO YOU” Nash bellowed at him while wrenching his arm around.
“My last name is Gallagher. You have been informed of this several times over the last 3 years however you refuse to acknowledge it. If you can’t use my correct name then I won’t respond to you.” Buck growled back to him, angry at the treatment he was receiving.
“I don’t care what” Nash started to say.
“WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF HIM OR I’M CALLING THE POLICE AND HAVING YOU ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT.” Eddie roared having come as Nash was grabbing Buck.
Buck glanced over and saw Eddie along with the rest of A-Shift glaring at Nash. He was surprised that Eddie had defended him as he still wasn’t sure he could trust him.
“Captian Nash, I don’t give a damn what your reasoning is. You are never allowed to physically assault another firefighter. You may have gotten away with it when Buck was a probie but no is going to keep quiet this time.” Tanika stated angrily.
“I AM THE CAPTAIN OF THIS HOUSE AND YOU WILL DO WHAT I SAY OR LOSE YOUR JOBS.” Nash yelled back.
“THAT IS ENOUGH. YOU EITHER RELEASE GALLAGHER RIGHT NOW OR I’M CALLING HEADQUARTERS AND REPORTING YOU. YOU SEEMED TO HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS HERE IS RECORDED.’ Maxwell shouted back as he started towards Nash to pull him away from Buck.
Nash finally released Buck and turned towards the other firefighters as if he was going to continue shouting at them. At that time Battalion Chief Williams walked into the bay.
“Gallagher and the rest of you get changed into your uniforms. Nash, I want to see you in the office right now.” Chief Willaims, said calmly while glaring at Nash.
“Gallagher, I want to check out your arm so take off your shirt.” Voyta, the one the paramedics on shift, said as they walked into the locker room.
The locker room was quiet as the others all changed while also watching to see if Buck had any damage to his arm. They could all see that bruises in the shape of Nash’s fingers were starting to form on his arm. After checking his arm over, Voyta told him to finish changing, then go up to the loft and put ice on his arm. Buck could see the anger in Eddie’s eyes, so quickly changed and had Eddie follow him upstairs.
“Thanks for sticking up for me.” Buck said quietly while getting an ice pack from the freezer.
“He had no right to grab you like that or to yell at you. He’s the one who lied. He should be apologizing to you, not assaulting you just because he doesn’t want to admit he’s wrong.” Eddie responded.
“Diaz is right.” Ortiz said as he stepped into the loft. “I don’t think he’s figured out that we’re all mad at him for the bullshit he pulled. I don’t know about the others but right now I don’t trust him.”
“Jesus speaks for me and the others. We are all angry about what happened and that anger is directed at Captain Nash. You almost died three times in the last year but you worked your ass off to get back to us. Nash never should have pulled any of this bullshit. He broke everyone’s trust, trust is hard to regain once it’s been lost.. He needs to pull his head out of his ass and realize that he’s the one who destroyed the family atmosphere that we had here.” Massey said, coming to a stop next to Buck.
The others all agreed as they settled around the loft to await their morning briefing. Ten minutes after the crew had seated themselves, Chief Williams and Captain Nash appeared in the loft. Everyone could see that Nash wasn’t happy about the ass chewing he had received. Chief Williams gave the morning briefing then assigned chores for everyone. She made sure everyone was aware that she was going to be shadowing Nash for the rest of their eight hour shift.
Everyone scattered to start their chores. The rest of the day was fairly normal. They had 5 calls in their eight hour shift. Cooper showed up a little before ten with his new prosthetic arm. He explained that he was supposed to try wearing it for a few hours but if it started to hurt he would need to remove it. The whole firehouse congratulated him and were in good spirits for the rest of the day.
As Buck was getting ready to leave, Chief Williams pulled him to let him know that headquarters was going to have someone watching the firehouse through the cameras. She told him it would be for a long time because they had hired someone just to do that job. She apologized for not being here to stop Nash.
Buck headed home contemplating the implications of what he was told. It looked like it wasn’t just the firefighters who didn’t trust Nash anymore. Hopefully things would settle down soon because he was pretty sure Eddie was going to deck Nash if he kept up his attitude.
Buck walked into the house to see Lip, Ian, Debbie, Tristan and Carl all sitting at the table working on homework. The twins were in their playpen playing while Liam was sitting in front of the coffee table coloring. He was impressed with Lip and Ian. He figured they would have let the other kids run wild.
“I’m home.” Buck said as he set down his bag.
“Hey” “Hi, Dad” “Dad!” came from the kids.
“Are you hungry?” Buck asked as he picked up Liam.
“Yes!” “I’m starving” “Pizza, pweese?” was the response to his question.
“Well we all know Liam wants pizza. Any other requests?”
“Pizza sounds good. Can we get one that is vegetarian? Debbie and Tristan wanted to try it last time.” Lip said distractedly while scowling at his calculus homework.
“I’ll get it ordered while you guys finish your homework. I’m going to go play with the babies in the living room while we wait.” Buck stated, smiling at the serious looks on all the kids' faces.
He spent time on the floor with the three younger kids before answering the door for the pizza. Thankfully everyone except Lip had finished their homework. Telling Lip he could finish after dinner, he sat down to enjoy listening to the kids' day. Drew and Erica arrived home after dinner and took Tristan back to their place for the rest of the evening.
*************************************************************************************************************
It had been several months since Captain Nash had returned to the 118. Things were still pretty tense. Nash realizing that his every move was being scrutinized had toned down his nastiness especially after he noticed that the rest of the firehouse no longer trusted him.
Today was the day that Hen Wilson was coming back. A drug test found that she had been dosed with psilocybin. Unfortunately, they hadn’t been able to figure out who was responsible for the drugging however there was heavy suspicion on Howard Han and Maddie Buckley. Once the drug was out of her system and she was able to go through counseling Hen reached out to Buck and apologized. They were tentatively talking but Buck was still wary of her changing her mind and deciding to hate him again.
Watching Hen walk into the firehouse uncertainly, Buck made the decision to welcome her back with open arms. There was enough tension at work due to the problems with Nash without them piling more discord on to the situation.
“Welcome back Hen. Sorry there is no party but things are a little tense here right now.” Buck said, offering her a hug.
Feeling her relax into the hug, Buck heard her say “Thanks Buck” into his shirt. The rest of the crew then started to welcome her back once the first olive branch had been made.
The rest of the shift went by the same way it had since the overt oversight of Nash had been dropped. Buck could see the confusion then outrage Hen felt as the shift progressed. Several times throughout the day she stepped in front of one of the other crew members to tell Nash off. By the end of shift Nash had threatened to write her up three times. Each time she threatened to report him to the union and to headquarters which caused Nash to back down each time.
“Has he been like this since everyone else got back?” Hen asked as they all headed towards their vehicles after the shift ended.
“Yes, he’s been an ass. He seems to think that now that he doesn’t have someone watching his actions in person he can treat everyone like shit. We all stood up for Buck after Nash was allowed to come back and he’s been taking it out on everyone since. I don’t think he realizes that none of us trust him anymore.’ Eddie said, sounding discouraged.
“Karen and I are supposed to have dinner with him and Athena tonight. I’m going to let him know he either gets his shit together and goes back to counseling or I’m going to get him fired. None of us deserve to be treated like this.” Hen told them obviously pissed off.
“I wish you luck with that. I’m not sure he will pay attention to you even with Athena there. I think he’s had a break in reality. Hopefully Athena will force him to get the help he needs.” Buck responded.
“Don’t worry if Athena doesn’t step in and get him help, I really will go to the union and to headquarters about this.” Hen declared.
Buck and Eddie watch her stomp to her car, pulling out her phone as she gets in. Exchanging glances both decided they didn’t want to know who she was calling. Hopefully it was just Karen but knowing Hen it could be anyone. She had a lot of friends in headquarters and at the academy.
“Chris is at school. Do you want to get breakfast?” Eddie asked hopefully.
“Sure. Lets get out of here. Meet you at diner on the 2nd?” Buck suggested.

Whatever Hen did resulted in Athena forcing Nash back into rehab and counseling so Captain Cooper had returned to the 118 for the last few weeks. Today was the day he was returning to the 136 and A-shift was getting a new interim captain.
A-shift was lined up in the engine bay as Cooper came down from the loft, a tall, handsome asian man following behind him.
“Good morning everyone. I would like to introduce you all to your new interim captain. This is Captain Aaron Sasaki. He was recently promoted to captain from house 34. He has been training with the 156 for the last year and is one of the best firefighters LAFD has ever had.” Cooper explained.
“Hello everyone. I look forward to getting to know all of you in the next few days. If you have any concerns please bring them to me right away. I have an open door policy. If any of you are not comfortable speaking with me then please contact your union representative. I hope we all have a safe and calm shift.” Captain Sasaki stated. “I invite you all to call me Aaron or Cap. Please let me know your preferred names when you get the chance. Chores are displayed in the loft. Please get on them ASAP.”
Everyone started their chores, quietly talking about the new captain. The general consensus was that they all hoped he turned out to be a good captain. It was a normal twentyfour hour shift and Captain Sasaki performed the way a captain should. Buck and the other firefighters decided to take a wait and see attitude. Hopefully he continued to be a good captain.
While Buck and Hen had started talking again, Buck still wasn’t completely comfortable with her. He joined the rest of the shift for breakfast before heading home but didn’t say more than a few words to her.
Buck had just entered the house when his phone started ringing. He saw that it was his lawyer’s office.
“This is Buck,” he said, answering his phone.
“Hi, I’m calling because I’ve been keeping an eye on Fiona Gallagher like you asked me to. She just boarded a flight from Tampa to LA. I think she’s on her way to see you and the kids.” he lawyer advised.
“Do you know when her flight lands?” Buck asked.
“She has a stop in Phoenix so she shouldn’t be getting in until 3:20 pm. Do you want me to have her intercepted?” his lawyer asked.
“Not yet. Lets see what she does once she’s in LA. Please continue to keep an eye on her.” Buck stated.
“I will have my investigator keep following her,” he said.
“Thanks for the call. Keep up the great work.” Buck said.
Buck was concerned about what he had just learned. His kids had just started to get comfortable and he wasn’t going to let Fiona screw up their lives. She had abandoned them when they needed her most and he didn’t want her to try to make them feel bad for being adopted into a better life.
“Drew and Erica can I speak with you for a second in my office?” Buck requested as he headed towards his office.
“Is something wrong?” Erica asked as she stepped into the office with Drew right behind her.
“I don’t know yet. The kids have an older sister named Fiona who called DCFS to pick up her younger siblings because she was mad at them. Their mother left and signed away her rights. Their father is in prison and also signed away his rights after he found out Fiona had left Illinois. My lawyer just called to let me know that she is on a flight here from Tampa. I’m not sure if she’s going to make trouble but I wanted to make sure you were aware of who she is. I don’t want her in the house unless I’m here. Here is a picture of her in case she shows up here when I’m gone.” Buck explained showing them a picture his lawyer’s investigator had taken of Fiona two months earlier.
“Do you think she’s going to be a problem?” Drew asked, concerned.
“I don’t know. I only know about her from the kids' stories. The last time I saw her she was 4 and LIp had just been born. I think she is nineteen now and she took care of her younger brothers and sister whenever their parents were too high to do it themselves which seemed to be all the time. I’m not sure why she decided to call DCFS and leave them but I don’t want her traumatizing them again. Lip and Ian hinted that they thought she was going to always take care of them.” Buck told them as he put the picture away. “I’ve spoken with all of the kids counselors and they each said that Fiona’s abandonment was more a betrayal to the kids than their parents were.”
“So at this time we’re just going to let her come here to find out what she wants?” Erica asked.
“No, my lawyer has an investigator who is keeping an eye on her. Hopefully she will try to come here and we can speak with her first, however if she goes to any of the kids' schools she’ll be arrested for trespassing. I set this up when I first enrolled the kids in school.” Buck disclosed. “I’m hoping she comes here first so that I can talk to her. I want to know if she’s just wanting to reconnect with the kids or if she’s going to try to get money from us.”
“We’ll watch for her and keep the kids safe. If she shows up here when you are gone and refuses to leave, do you want us to call the cops on her?” Drew asked.
“Yes, I’m not going to play any games with her. I’m really angry about what she did to the kids. If Michael and Jess hadn’t been contacted by DCFS then those kids would have been left in foster care until they aged out at 18. My main concern is making sure my kids are not traumatized any further than they have been.” Buck said. “Now I’m going to play with the twins until it’s time for their nap. Thanks for taking this seriously.”
Buck laid on the floor playing with the girls but was distracted by thoughts of Fiona. He hadn’t really been worrying about her since he knew she was in Tampa. His lawyer had told him that she had gotten her GED and was working in a call center there. He had made sure she didn’t know where they lived but had to wonder if any of his kids had contacted her. He would have to wait until they go home to find out more.
*************************************************************************************************************
Buck had just received word that Fiona was on her way to his house. Last night had been a shit show after Debbie confessed to calling Fiona because Buck had grounded her. Lip, Ian and Carl had all erupted in anger once she confessed. Buck had to physically hold on to Carl to keep him from punching Debbie. There was a lot of yelling from the boys and crying from Debbie. They boys gave her the silent treatment this morning as they got ready for school. Buck had already called to see if they could have a family therapy session this evening.
Buck was sitting in the courtyard as the Lyft Fiona had paid for dropped her off at the gate of his house. He headed towards the gate to find out what she wanted.
“Hello Fiona. Why are you here?” Buck asked her bluntly through the gate.
“I want to see my brothers and sister. Debbie told me about how you were abusing them and I’m going to take them back to Chicago with me.” Fiona declared, glaring at Buck.
“Wow, I wasn’t aware grounding Debbie was considered abuse.” Buck stated sarcastically. “You’re not taking my kids anywhere and if you don’t lose the attitude you won’t be allowed to see them at all.”
“FUCK YOU. THEY BELONG TO ME!” Fiona screamed while trying to climb the gate.
“They aren’t belongings Fiona, they are people. I’m their father now and I’m the only one who gets a say in whether or not you get to see them.” Buck stated firmly, while glaring at her.
He could hear sirens getting closer and assumed that Drew or Erica had called the cops. He almost laughed when the police cars pulled up because Fiona was halfway up his gate and it was obvious that she was trying to climb over it.
Buck got to watch as the female police officer made Fiona get down while the male officer asked to come in to speak with him. Buck agreed and opened the small door in the gate once Fiona was down. He explained who he was, who Fiona was, how they were related and why they were called. He also listened to Fiona lie to the female office. He then called his lawyer, put the call on speaker so his lawyer could explain all the steps taken in the last few months to keep an eye on Fiona and finally asked if there was any way he could file for a protection order to keep Fiona away from his kids. Fiona, hearing him request the protection order, proceeded to cuss him out and then in anger punched the female office. She was promptly arrested and the officers both left to take her to the station to be booked. Buck wasn’t sure what was going to happen next but he knew that this wasn’t the last he would hear from Fiona.
*************************************************************************************************************
Buck was right, it wasn’t the last time he heard from Fiona. She got the charges dropped by apologizing to the courts and the police officer she punched. His lawyer found out that she had befriended a rich older woman in Tampa and that woman was paying for her stay in LA. Turns out the rich woman had a condo in LA that she was letting Fiona stay in for free. Fiona had contacted the child protective services trying to say he was abusing his kids. His local social worker had shown up with her supervisor to see what was going on. Fiona was also contesting his adoption by saying he wasn’t really family. The kids had all been interviewed by social services and the courts. Debbie was the only one who kept saying she wanted to live with Fiona. Today they were going to court so that a judge could decide what was best for the kids.
Everyone was seated around a large conference table in the family courthouse. Buck was nervous that they would take the older kids away. Liam and the twins would remain in his custody no matter what happened today which had been a relief once this had been explained to him.
“Hello I am Judge Weber with family court. I understand we are here because Fiona Gallagher is contesting the adoption of her brothers and sister by Evan Gallagher. Is that correct?” Judge Weber asked as she sat down at the head of the table.
“That is correct, Judge Weber. My name is Vince Miller and I am Mr. Gallagher’s lawyer.” Mr. Miller stated.
“Thank you Mr. Miller. First I am going to hear from the representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family services, then I will here from Ms. Gallagher’s lawyer, followed by Mr. Gallagher’s lawyer, finally I will hear from each of the children separately. As you all have noticed the children have been kept away from this chamber and they will not enter this chamber until I render my decision. Is this understood.?” Judge Weber questioned sternly.
“Yes, your honor” was chorused by everyone present.
The next hour and half was spent with everyone explaining their positions. The judge then dismissed them while she spoke with the kids. Buck and his lawyer Vince walked across the street to the park and got coffee. Buck called Erica to check on the younger kids while sitting on a park bench. He was surprised when Vince received a notice a little over two hours later telling them to return to the court room.
“Thank you all for returning promptly. After hearing from everyone and looking over the information provided I have made a decision.” Judge Weber said after everyone had taken a seat.
Buck sat nervously in between Lip and Ian, who both grabbed his hand to hold, while waiting for the decision to be given. He could see Fiona on the other side of the table looking smug. He assumed she thought she had won.
“I want everyone to know that I take these types of cases very seriously and my decision today was based on what is best for the Gallagher children. Ms. Gallagher’s main argument was that the adoption of her younger siblings is that Evan Gallagher isn’t a blood relative. Ms. Gallagher, I am going to let you know right now that your attitude towards adoption doesn’t do you any favors. I find that there is no reason that the adoption of Philip, Ian, Deborah and Carl Gallagher should not continue. Evan Gallagher has a stable job, a home that he owns and has voluntarily assisted in helping the children with their mental health. Based on his and the children’s testimony, he truly loves all of the Gallagher children. Ms. Gallagher, I am going to allow you to have visitations once you have completed counseling. The information provided by the department of children and family services greatly concerns me. I believe that you need help separating your feelings for your siblings from your feelings for your parents. I realized that your parents made you the main caregiver for your younger siblings however you are not their mom. You also don’t have the ability to care for them at this time. Until I have a report on my desk that tells me you have completed the required counseling I am going to limit your contact with them to weekly supervised phone calls.” Judge Weber stated.
“YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME” Fiona screamed leaping from her chair.
“SIT DOWN, Ms. Gallagher” Judge Weber said sternly. “That behavior right there is part of the reason I am limiting your contact with your siblings. I don’t feel that you are currently stable enough at this time. I also reviewed the reports from the police from your arrest after you punched a police officer. You appear to have an anger management issue.”
Fiona sat back down in her chair with a loud thump. She crossed her arms and pouted while the kids all giggled at her being yelled at. It was pretty obvious to all of the adults in the room that she wasn’t as mature as she was trying to pass herself off as.
“Judge Weber, I want to thank you for allowing these adoptions to go through. I’m not sure when I fell in love with these kids but I love them more than life. Fiona went about this badly but I don’t want to cut her out of her siblings' lives. During these proceedings I came to the realization that Fiona is still a child and she still needs the stability of having her b rothers and sister to lean on. While I agree that she needs counseling I would like to offer her the option to speak with the kids on the phone. Once she finishes counseling we can see about supervised visitation.” Buck suggested.
“Mr. Gallagher, I understand that you are trying to make sure the kids have a good relationship with their sister but at this time I am going to insist that she has at least 6 counseling sessions before any contact between siblings is allowed.” Judge Weber advised. “Ms. Gallagher, once I have paperwork showing that you have completed your first 6 counseling sessions then I will allow for Mr. Gallagher’s suggestion. If you don’t follow these orders then you will not be allowed to have any contact with your siblings until they are 18. Is that understood?”
“Fine,” Fiona said sullenly, still pouting.
The rest of the hearing went quickly after that with the judge telling them at the end that Buck’s adoption of the children was not finalized. He stated the new birth certificate’s showing him as the only parent would be received in the mail in 4 to 6 weeks. The boys all erupted in cheers while Debbie looked torn between being happy and watching Fiona in worry.
“Debbie,” Buck said, laying his hand on her shoulder “She’s still your sister, she will always be your sister. She needs counseling just like you and your brothers. I want you all to still have a relationship that’s why I tried to get them to allow at least phone calls. I will do everything I can to help her.”
“I know you will.” Debbie said, barrying her head in his shirt.
“Fiona, please get the counseling required so that you and the kids can talk. They need you in their lives as their sister, not their mother.” Buck said, stopping in front of Fiona. She just glared at him as she stomped out of the courtroom.
Chapter 17
Notes:
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've had Covid. I've been sleeping for about a week. Every time I would try to write I would fall asleep in the middle of a paragraph. This paragraph is shorter than normal but I wanted to get something out to everyone.
Chapter Text
It had been three weeks since the custody hearing and the kids were starting to process the fact that Fiona had tried to take away the stability they had with Buck. Lip was the angriest although Ian wasn’t far behind. Debbie wasn’t speaking to anyone because she was mad that Fiona wasn’t around. Carl didn’t seem to care. When Buck asked him, he admitted that most of his earlier memories were of Lip and Ian. Fiona wasn’t around much for him so he didn’t really care if she was around now. It made Buck sad that his kids were having to deal with Fiona’s abandonment of them again. He had come to realize in the last few weeks that none of the kids missed Monica or Frank.
Today was the day Buck was taking Debbie to see her counselor. He felt like she needed to have more help to process her feelings. He also was considering anger management classes for her. She had gotten in a fight at school yesterday and was suspended for the day. Buck wasn’t sure how to proceed. He didn’t want to keep grounding her but knew she needed to face the consequences of her actions.
“Hello Mr. Gallagher. You said that you needed to speak with me before I spoke with Debbie. How may I help you today?” asked Dr. Blume, Debbie’s counselor.
“Hi Dr. Blume. I just wanted to go over a few things with you about how the past few weeks have gone for Debbie.” Buck replied.
He then proceeded to explain the custody fight with Debbie’s role in everything, her refusal to speak with her brothers, her anger with everyone and her recent suspension from school for fighting. Dr. Blume promised to discuss everything with Debbie and then give Buck any recommendation for further help after the session.
Buck waited an hour for the session to end then had another meeting with Dr. Blume. Dr. Blume suggested an anger management course that was offered by one of the other child psychologists in the building. She also suggested family counseling sessions for everyone so that they could all talk about how Fiona’s re-entry into their lives was affecting them. Buck made the appointments for later in the week and took Debbie home.
Buck told Debbie to go to her room and work on her homework since she was missing the day of school. He then sat down with Drew and Erica to see if they had any insights on how he should proceed. It was decided between the three of them that Debbie wouldn’t be allowed to go to sleepover one of her friends was having this weekend and that she wouldn’t be allowed any screen time unless it was for school work for the rest of the week.
Buck played with the twins and Liam for about an hour before he had to go to his own counseling session with Dr. Copeland. Thankfully he could do that in his office on his computer. Dr. Copeland was helping me work through his grief at losing Michael and Jess, his anger at Maddie, Han and Nash, his insecurities about taking on all of the kids and his feelings towards his broken friendships with Hen and Eddie. He now had to add on his feelings towards Fiona’s attempt to take the kids away from him.
An hour and half later Buck signed off from his therapy session with homework. He was supposed to start writing down his feelings towards his sister and her betrayal. Dr. Copeland felt that it would be the key for him to start healing and accepting that Maddie was never going to be allowed in his life again. They had also talked about how he felt about Fiona. He explained that he was having his lawyer keep an eye on her. He wanted her to get the therapy she needs so that she could slowly start to reintegrate into the lives of his kids.
He came out of his office to find Debbie on the floor teaching Liam how to play pattycake. She seemed much calmer then she had been in the last few weeks so he left them playing while he went to get the girls changed for the pool. He had decided he was going to start teaching them how to swim. Debbie and Liam followed as soon as they realized he was headed towards the pool.
Later that night he sat on the edge of Debbie’s bed so that he could talk to her about how she was feeling.
“Debbie, I know that the last few weeks have been hard on you and I wish I could make things magically better but I can’t. I’ve signed you up for more counseling sessions and anger management classes. I would really like you to take them seriously.” Buck stated, watching her to see how she would respond.
“I’m really angry all the time. I’m angry at Monica, Frank and especially Fiona but I also miss Fiona a lot. I just want to stop being angry.” Debbie said while staring at her bedspread.
“Debbie, you have every right to be angry about what happened but you can’t keep taking that anger out on everyone else around you. I really think the anger management classes and extra counseling sessions will help you to manage your anger. I’m hoping you will take this seriously. I want you to be happy, not sad and angry all the time.” Buck explained leaning in to hug her.
“I’ll try.” Debbie mumbled.
“That’s all I can ask. I love you, Debbie. Good night. I’ll see you in the morning.” Buck said as exited her room.
Buck checked on the other younger kids to find them all sound asleep. He stood in the hallway knowing that his next stop was upstairs to check on Lip and Ian. Sighing he started up the stairs. He found them both sitting on the floor at the coffee table working on homework.
“Hey guys, are you at a place where you can stop so we can talk for a little bit?” Buck asked, sitting on a chair.
“Let me finish this paragraph” Lip muttered while staring intently at his computer screen.
Buck sat quietly while Ian finished his algebra homework and put his books away. They both waited patiently for Lip to finish, knowing he would be cranky if he didn’t get his paragraph finished.
“What do you want to talk about?” Lip asked, setting his computer aside.
“I spoke with both Debbie’s counselor and my counselor today, they both suggested family therapy for all of us. I’ve set an appointment for us on Thursday after school.” Buck stated, watching both of their faces to see their reactions.
Ian made a face but nodded without saying anything. Lip stared at him, processing what he said for a little over a minute.
“Is this because of what happened with Debbie?” He asked.
“Partly, I know we have all been having a hard time processing everything that happened with Fiona and I don’t want it fester. I think we all need to talk about how we are feeling and I think it’s best if we do it in a controlled environment like a counselors office.” Buck explained.
“I think that is a good idea.” Ian said softly, side eyeing Lip as he spoke. “I know that I have issues with what happened and Carl has some unresolved issues because he’s angry that she tried to take him away from you. He’s snuck up here to sleep with me or Lip for the last few days. I think what she did has made him fear being taken away from our new home.”
“I know I’m angry at what she did. Therapy would probably help all of us. I’m going to be honest, Buck. I don’t really want to see her anytime soon. She was the only person we could count on for the longest time then she abandoned all of us. I’m not going to want a relationship even if she goes to counseling.” Lip said, sounding frustrated and sad at the same time.
“I understand where both of you are coming from. I really hope that therapy helps everyone. Lip, you aren’t required to see Fiona even if she gets help. You're allowed to feel how you feel. I will never make any of you deal with Fiona, Monica or Frank. If you decide you want to try to have a relationship with any of them then we will go forward from there. My only concern is you kids. I want you all to be happy and healthy.” Buck said.
Both boys lunge forward to hug him. He hugged them back just as tightly as they hugged him. They sat talking for about an hour before Buck suggested they get ready for bed. He himself headed downstairs to go to bed hoping that the next few weeks would help his family become closer.
Chapter Text
Buck woke up with a feeling he had forgotten something but couldn’t figure out what it was. Buck looked at his calendar and realized that it had been three months since the court date that had changed his family. Fiona had disappeared just as fast as she had appeared. Vince Miller’s investigator found her back in Chicago, living in the Gallagher house that she grew up in. Buck received weekly updates about what was happening in her life. She hadn’t contacted his kids since before that day in the courthouse. She had started counseling last week after the insurance for her new call center job kicked in. Buck hoped that she would take it seriously so that she could be allowed contact with the kids again.
Therapy had gone well for his family and he felt that they were closer than ever. Lip still didn’t want anything to do with Fiona and made that very clear every time someone brought up the possibility of her being in contact with them. Ian and Debbie were cautiously hopeful but both had expressed to him privately that they weren’t sure they would ever trust her again. Debbie was doing better now that she was in anger management classes. She even suggested classes for Carl which Buck took seriously. Both of them were starting to express themselves without the anger they normally carried. Buck himself was surprised at how much the therapy sessions helped him to connect with all of the kids. He now knew more about how they were raised and vowed to never allow Monica or Frank back into their lives.
Captain Nash had finished his rehab but had been informed that he wouldn’t be allowed back as captain of the 118 until he had passed a probationary period. He was currently working in administration in the LAFD headquarters. He had been forced to apologize to everyone on A-shift for his behavior before he was allowed back to work. Buck had kept out of the discussions about his apology but Eddie and Hen had both told him that the others on their shift felt like the apologies were fake. Aaron Sasaki was still the interim captain but there was hope that he would be made the permanent captain as he proved to be an excellent captain for their shift.
As he laid in bed trying to convince himself he needed to get up the feeling that he was forgetting something persisted. Finally forcing himself to get up and get ready, he headed towards the kitchen to find Drew cooking breakfast.
“Good morning Drew. Thank you for starting breakfast.” Buck murmured as he poured himself a cup of coffee.
“Good morning, Buck. Happy Birthday.” Drew said as he flipped a pancake.
“Huh, that’s what I was forgetting.” Buck responded, surprised.
“You forgot your birthday?” Drew asked, shocked.
“I’ve been so busy this year that it never even crossed my mind. Last year my birthday was right after Michael and Jess died so I didn’t celebrate it.” Buck explained.
“Well the kids have a whole day planned for your birthday. I hope you're ready for them.” Drew said, laughing lightly.
“What do they have planned?” Buck asked suspiciously
“You’ll just have to wait for the surprise. I’m not ruining it.” Drew said, plating the pancakes that were done.
Buck turned towards the door hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet. He watched as Liam walked into the kitchen with Maeve and Sorcha toddling after him unsteadily.
“Good morning, kids” Buck cheerfully greeted them.
“Daddy” “Dada” “Dada” was said in a short procession.
He sat on the floor to allow the kids to crawl all over him. It still shocked him how much the kids had grown. Liam was two and a half while the girls were a little over 13 months. He played with them until it was time for breakfast. Once everyone was seated the kids started excitedly chatting about the fun day ahead of them. It took almost an hour to get everyone ready and loaded up into the van with Erica, Tristan, Debbie and Carl following in Drew’s car while Drew drove the van. Buck still didn’t know what was planned for the day and no one would give him any hints. He was surprised when they stopped to pick up Chris. Carla laughed at him when he asked about the plans the kids had made. She told him to enjoy his birthday and she would be over to pick Chris up tomorrow around noon.
Two hours and a half hours later they pulled into the San Diego Zoo parking lot. Buck thanked his kids profusely, including Tristan and Chris in the thanks. The next few hours were spent enjoying the animal exhibits and spending time with the kids. They ended up having lunch at Albert’s Restaurant, the kids loving the food. Six hours later, Buck suggests that they head home and have dinner there. He could see that the younger kids were all starting to get really tired. There were boo’s from Debbie, Tristan, Carl and Chris but none of them really argued about going home. They all fell asleep in the cars on the way home. Lip and Ian spent the ride home playing on their phones while Buck and Drew discussed their favorite hiking trails.
Once home, the kids all got a second wind and headed to the pool to swim. Buck finally looked at his phone and was pleasantly surprised to see a message from Eddie wishing him a happy birthday. He knew Eddie had a hard time remembering important dates unless they pertained to Chris. He sent him a response thanking him for his birthday wishes, telling him he would see him tomorrow at work. Eddie had taken an extra shift, as he was trying to save up to purchase the house he and Chris were currently renting, so he would be working until tomorrow at 3. Buck had actually purchased the house through his lawyer and was putting Eddie’s rent payments into an account for Chris. He just knew it was going to blow up in his face once Eddie found out but he really wanted to make sure Eddie didn’t have to worry about Chris’s future.
After changing he headed out to spend time with the kids in the pool not realizing that Drew had left to pick up his favorite foods for dinner. He played with the kids for about an hour before they were all called over to eat dinner. Drew and Erica had set up everything at the patio table so they sat down to a mismatch of enchiladas, baked ziti, chicken tiki masala and chicken egg rolls. Buck was amazed and grateful that they had managed to get all of his favorite dishes. The kids waited until the food was put away before bringing out their gifts. He received several homemade cards, new drawings from the younger kids and a new weighted blanket that Lip and Ian had split the cost of. Even Drew and Erica got him a small gift card for the coffee shop down the street from the firehouse.
Buck had just crawled into bed when he received a Face time request from Eddie.
“Hey”
“Happy birthday, Buck,” Eddie replied.
“Thank you, Eddie. Aren’t you still on shift?” Buck replied.
“Yeah, we’re offline for a few hours to eat and get a nap in. I called to tell you happy birthday in person rather than just by text. I also wanted to ask if you would go with me to the courthouse on Tuesday.” Eddie said, lowering his voice so that the others at the station wouldn’t hear him.
“What’s happening on Tuesday?” Buck asked, concerned.
“Ana Flores trial starts. She not only has been charged with what she did to me but it turns out she isn’t even Ana Flores. Her real name is Maria Alvarez and she’s wanted in Arizona and New Mexico for fraud, assault, attempted murder and child abuse. She’s also wanted in Brazil for the killing of a 2 year old little girl. From what I understand, she was the little girl's nanny. She got angry that the girl’s father didn’t return her feelings and killed her in revenge. I think after she serves time for what she’s done here in the US she’s going to be extradited to Brazil.” Eddie explained.
“Jesus, I can’t believe she was allowed to be around kids. Of course I’ll go with you. Are you going to have to testify on Tuesday or will it be later in the trial?” Buck asked.
“I’m scheduled to testify Wednesday. Thankfully we have those two days off so I won’t have to miss any work. I’m hoping the trial goes fast so that she’s convicted quickly.” Eddie stated.
“I hope it goes fast also. Does Chris know what’s going on?” Buck questioned.
“No, he just knows that we aren’t together anymore. I’m trying to keep everything that happened with her from him until he’s older and can understand it better.” was Eddie’s response while yawning.
“Get some sleep Eddie. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” Buck told him.
“Goodnight, Buck.”
“Goodnight, Eddie.” Buck said before disconnecting the call.
*************************************************************************************************************
The trial of Maria Alvarez took 4 days with the jury finding her guilty on all charges after deliberating for two hours. Her sentencing hearing was scheduled for two weeks after the trial. Both Eddie and Buck attended the sentencing hearing to make sure she received a long sentence. She was quickly sentenced to 15 years in prison. They found out about a month later that she had been tried in both Arizona and New Mexico. Her sentences for those states were also 15 years which she would serve all at the same time. Once her sentences were done in California she would be sent to Brazil to be tried for the murder of Esme Martinez, the little girl she had killed.
Buck could tell that Eddie was really relieved that she was no longer in his life. Buck was shocked to find out that Eddie’s parents were trying to use this as a way to get custody of Chris. Buck paid for the best lawyer in LA over Eddie’s objections. He wasn’t going to allow them to take Chris away from Eddie. He also contacted his own lawyer to see if he could dig up any dirt on Helena and Ramon Diaz.

Chapter Text
Buck was paying bills in his office when his phone rang. It had been three weeks since he had sicked his lawyer on the Diaz parents and he was waiting for an update.
“Hello Vince. Please tell me you have something on the Diazes that will help with Eddie’s custody case.” Buck practically begged.
“I have something alright. I think this is something I need to speak with you and Eddie in person though. He’s going to need the emotional support you can offer him.” Vince said gravely.
“Let me call him and see what time would be best. I’ll call you right back.” Buck stated apprehensively.
“Alright, I’ll talk to you soon.” Vince said, hanging up.
“Eddie, are you doing anything right now?” Buck asked after Eddie answered the phone.
“No, why what’s going on?” Eddie asked, confused.
“I had my lawyer look into your parents to see if there was anything that could be used to prevent them from getting custody of Chris. He just called and said he wanted to see both of us in person. I think it might be really bad news.” Buck explained.
“Dios, what could they have done? Do you know when he wants to see us?” Eddie asked.
“I’m going to conference him in to see when he’s available. Just give me a sec.” Buck said, while setting up the conference call.
“Vince, this is Buck. I have Eddie conferenced in. When would be a good time for us to come in?” Buck asked.
“I don’t have any appointments until 3. Could you both come in right away?” Vince asked.
“Eddie, I can pick you up if you're willing to go in now.” Buck offered.
“Yeah, I’ll be waiting for you. Just honk when you get here and I’ll come out.” Eddie said.
It took Buck an hour to pick up Eddie and drive to Vince’s office. Eddie was really quiet on the way over. Buck could see he was starting to panic as he pulled into the parking lot. After parking, he reached over and grabbed Eddie’s hands. Holding his hands, he talked him through breathing exercises to calm him down. Once Eddie was calm enough they headed into the building.
“What was so important that we needed to come into the office?” Buck asked after he and Eddie had sat down.
“As you know, I’ve been looking into the Diaz parents and I found out that they are not the biological parents of Edmundo Diaz. They are his aunt and uncle. His parents, Jorge and Lynette Diaz, were killed in a car accident three days after Eddie was born. Ramon and Helena Diaz didn’t inform any of their family of the deaths until a year later. They literally waited until the adoption of Eddie was finalized so that no one could take him away from them. It was found when Jorge’s will was read that Eddie should have gone to his sister Josephina. This evidence shows that this isn’t the first time they have taken a child that doesn’t belong to them. I also found two child abuse cases with the El Paso child protection services. One in 1993 and one in 1996. There is a money trail that show’s Helena Diaz paid the social workers to make the cases go away. ” Vince explained laying out the paper trail he had found.
Buck and Vince waited in silence as Eddie absorbed the bombshell that had just been dropped.
“They’re not my real parents?” Eddie choked out.
“Legally they adopted you so they are your parents just not your biological parents.” Vince softly stated, trying to lessen the blow.
“But they're not supposed to be right? Pepa and Tio Andre were supposed to raise me.” Eddie was starting to get angry and Buck was worried he would start throwing things.
Buck didn’t know a lot about the Diaz parents but what he did know wasn’t good. This wasn’t the first time they had tried to take Chris away from Eddie, just the first time they had tried to do it through the courts.
“You said that there were two cases with child protective services. I don’t remember ever talking to a social worker when I was younger.” Eddie stated while trying to keep his temper.
“I was able to get copies of the original reports and it appears the abuse allegations were done by a teacher who noticed a lot of bruises on you. Did your parents ever discipline you physically?” asked Vince.
“Yes, they used to spank me and sometimes my dad would use a wooden stick to hit me with. I thought that was normal back then. I know it’s not now but I didn’t know better when I was younger.” Eddie confessed, ashamed to be saying anything about what happened out loud.
“From what I was able to find, the social workers talked to you at school. Based on their reports you weren’t aware that they were with CPS.” Vince said
“Did you find anything else out about them?” Buck asked, trying to keep Eddie from imploding.
“Yes, I started with the easiest thing we found out because the next few things are going to make Eddie angrier than he already is. Turns out Helena can’t have children biologically so she allowed Ramon to get other women pregnant then they would sue for custody.” Vince started to explain.
“Wait, I remember my mom..I mean Helena being pregnant with Adrianna.” Eddie interrupted.
“She faked that pregnancy. My investigator was able to find several photographs of her the day before Adrianna’s birth showing her not pregnant. Ramon actually has 4 other girls who were raised by their mothers. Sophia and Adrianna’s mothers were both in the states illegally, Ramon was given custody of the two of them by having their mothers deported. Besides Sophia and Adrianna, Ramon's other daughters are Jennifer Ramos, Alecia Gelman, Mikayla Owens and Lily Jensen. Jennifer and Alecia are actually the same age as Sophia. Sophia was born in February, Jennifer in June and Alecia in October making them all 24. Mikayla is 22 and Lily is 20. From what my investigator has found Ramon would spend time with them whenever he was out of town working.” Vince stated.
“Do you know where they are? How about their mothers? Maybe they would be able to help with the custody case.” Buck asked.
Jennifer currently lives in Houston, she is a nurse at Houston Methodist Hospital. Alecia is in Amarillo, she is a 1st grade teacher who is married with a two year old daughter. Mikayla is going to the University of California studying to be a veterinarian. Lily is at Stanford in the premed program. All of their mothers still reside in Texas. If you would like, I can reach out to all of them to see if they would be willing to testify about their own experiences with Helena and Ramon.” Vince said. “I think everything we currently have would work without their help. The mother’s experiences with Helena and Ramon would only help to confirm that Helena and Ramon should never be allowed anywhere near Christopher.”
“I think that you should speak with my custody lawyer and share everything you have. I’ll let the two of you decide what would be the best way to use this information. Am I allowed to tell Sophia and Adriana about any of this? I think they would like to know that they have biological mothers out there. I also think that they would like to know about our other sisters.” Eddie asked.
“At this time, I’m going to say not yet. Let me talk with your lawyer to see what they suggest. This will be as much of a shock to them as it was to you. I’m going to suggest you take a few days to absorb this information. How about we meet again next Monday? I would also suggest that you talk with a therapist. This is a lot of disturbing information to receive about your family.” Vince suggested.
‘Thanks Vince. I’m going to take him home and let him vent to me. I’ll make an appointment with your secretary for Monday. I really appreciate all of the hard work you and your investigator have done for us.” Buck said as he stood up to start herding Eddie towards the door.
Buck quickly made the appointment for Monday then helped Eddie to his jeep. He could tell that Eddie was starting to spiral and wanted to get him home as soon as possible. Twenty minutes later Buck pulled up to a smash room. He paid for them to use a room then handed Eddie a bat and stood back while he took his anger out on the items in the room. It took him an hour before he was too tired to lift the bat up again and dropped to his knees. Buck then wrapped him in a hug and let him cry. He then helped him to his jeep and took him to his abuela’s house. She was shocked to see Eddie in the state he was in but still helped Buck get him to her spare room so he could sleep. Buck asked that she let him sleep as long as possible as he had received a shock. He also explained that Carla would be bringing Chris to his house after school so that they could talk once Eddie was awake without Chris hearing something that he shouldn’t.
Chapter 20
Notes:
Sorry it's taken me so long to update. I wrote a few chapters then realized I didn't like the direction they were going in so I had to rewrite them. I'm working on the next chapter right now so hopefully I will have it done shortly.
Chapter Text
Buck decided to go to the beach after dropping Eddie off. He was trying to deal with the information Eddie had received before going home to the kids. He thought his biological family was bad but it seemed like Eddie’s family was worse. The only thing he could do now was support Eddie going forward. Sitting on the beach, watching the waves, Buck realized that the waves made him feel peaceful in a way he hadn’t felt since before the truck bombing. He sat there for almost an hour just calming his mind so that he could go home in a better mood than he had been after he left Eddie’s abuela’s house.
Standing up and brushing his legs off he turned to head home but saw someone who looked familiar. Walking closer he realized that he was looking at one of the Milovich kids. He wasn’t sure which one but he definitely recognized him from the same neighborhood that his kids used to live in.
“Milkovich, I’m not sure which one you are but what are you doing in California? Last I checked, you still lived in Chicago.” Buck stated, standing close to the boy sitting in the sand.
“Fuck” the boy swore, jumping to his feet. “Don’t sneak up on me!”
“Sorry I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wasn’t expecting a Milkovich in California. Are you okay? You didn’t run away from home did you?” Buck asked concerned.
“No, I didn’t run away from home. My mom’s sister got custody of my sister and I after Terry went to jail again. She lives here in LA. I’ve never seen the ocean before so I took a bus here.” the boy said belligerently.
Buck was amused by the boys attitude but tried not to let it show.
“I did the same thing when I moved here from Chicago. I used to spend a lot of time here before work. I’m Evan Gallagher. I’m not sure if you remember me from my visits to my cousins house.” Buck said, holding out his hand.
The boy eyed him suspiciously for a second before shaking his hand and stating that his name was Micky Milkovich.
“I think I remember you hanging out at the Gallaghers from when I was little. I heard that you adopted the younger Gallaghers after the older sister turned them in to CPS.” Mickey said.
“I did. I couldn’t leave them in the system. None of them deserve to be stuck in foster care until they are eighteen. Is that what happened to you and your sister? Your aunt wouldn’t let you go into foster care?” Buck asked.
“Yeah, Aunt Misty said that we deserved better. Her and her wife made sure we were transferred into their custody since our mom died two weeks before Terry went back to prison.” Mickey admitted. “I don’t know why I’m telling you this.
“Probably because I’m someone who sort of knows you but not enough to judge you. I hope you enjoy living with your aunts. Hopefully it’s better than your dad.” Buck said.
“Mikhail Anatoly Milkovich, what do you think you are doing?” came a shout from a beautiful black woman who was running towards them.
“Who are you? Why are you talking to my nephew?” the woman demanded as she came to stand next to Mickey.
“I’m Evan Gallagher. I recognized Mickey from my family's neighborhood in Chicago. I just wanted to make sure he was okay.” Buck said, watching the woman concerned that this could turn out badly.
“Aunt Tawny, he’s okay. He was just checking to see if I’m okay. He adopted a bunch of Gallagher’s from my neighborhood in Chicago so that they wouldn’t go into foster care. He was surprised to see a Milkovich in California.” Mickey said, placing his hand on his aunt's arm to calm her down. “Evan, this is my aunt Tawny Clinton. She’s married to my aunt Misty.”
“Evan, huh? How did you know Mickey was going to be at the beach? Did he contact you?” Tawny asked suspiciously.
“Lady, I didn’t even know his name until he introduced himself. I recognized him from South Chicago and I was concerned that he had run away from home. I’m a firefighter which means I’m a mandated reporter. If he was a runaway I would have had to call it in.” Buck said defensively.
“Please, like being a firefighter, would stop you from molesting a child.” Tawny said angrily.
“Aunt Tawny stop. You're being a bitch just because you don’t like men. I can’t believe you would accuse someone of that just because you are a bitch. I’m telling the social worker what you said. I hope she sends Mandy and I to a foster family since you hate us so much.” Micky responded angrily.
“Micky, what do you mean she hates you?” Buck asked concerned.
“SHUT UP YOU STUPID BRAT AND YOU STAY OUT OF THIS.” Shouted Tawny as she grabbed Mickey’s arm to pull him away.
Buck noticed a crowd was gathering and several people were recording what was going on. He also saw two police officers walking up. He pulled out his phone and called his caseworker to see if there was anything she could do about what he was seeing. He told her several people were recording everything and that there were police at the scene. She promised to have someone from her office there asap. She told him to tell the police everything that had happened and she would call him back shortly.
Buck explained everything that had happened to Officer Jonas while watching to make sure Tawny didn’t cause any problems with Mickey. Mickey reminded him of his own kids which he knew would be an issue for anyone who didn’t grow up in south Chicago. He seemed to have the same kiss my ass attitude while speaking with the police. While Mickey and Buck spoke with Officer Jonas his partner was placing Tawny in cuffs.
A woman looking similar to Mickey ran up to the scene and hugged Mickey. She spoke to him quietly while a social worker spoke with Officer Jonas. Mickey pulled the woman over to Buck and introduced her as his aunt Misty.
“Why is she being arrested?” Buck asked Misty while pointing at Tawny.
“I got a restraining order yesterday. She has been getting violent with me and the kids for a few days and I’ve had enough. She’s not supposed to have any contact with us and she violated the order.” Misty explained. “She picked up her stuff yesterday. She’s supposed to be staying with her mother in Oakland. I’m not sure what she was doing here but she’s never getting near Mickey or Mandy again.”
“I’m sorry you're having family issues. I’m really glad I was here when she showed up. Are you going to be okay?” Buck asked, concerned. He had realized after being introduced that he recognized her from high school. She was a junior when he and Michael had started their freshman year.
“We’re going to be okay. Mickey said that you were just checking on him because you were surprised to see a Milkovich in California. I’m sorry if she caused you any issues.” Misty said.
“You aren’t to blame for what she did. Are you and Mickey going to be able to get home okay? The social worker isn’t going to cause you any issues is she?” Buck asked.
“We should be fine. I’ve found a new place that she isn’t aware of so we should be moving soon.” Misty explained.
“May I give you my number? I just worry about her doing something to you. You can text me if you need help. I’m a firefighter for the LAFD and I know several cops.” Buck said, smirking when she gave him a look. He knew what the Gallagher reputation was in Chicago and being friendly with the police didn’t jive with his family's reputation.
“Sure, I’ll put it in my phone under Evan G so I know who’s texting me.” Misty said.
“I go by Buck now.” Buck said.
“Well that will make it easier to know who’s texting me. I don’t think I know any other Bucks” Misty laughed as she changed his name in her contacts.
“I should get going. I need to get my kids from school. Mickey, your aunt has my number. You can call or text me anytime. Misty, please let me know if you need any help moving. Lip, Ian and I will help if you need it.” Buck stated as he started to walk away.
“Thanks Buck” came from the two behind him. He couldn’t believe the day he was having. Hopefully he could get home to his kids without anything else happening.
