Train Up a Child

Summary:

Narya ponders on how quickly Richard is growing up. Will he still need her?

Work Text:

Richard was advancing quickly in his personal training, Narya reflected on their return from the tundra. As she went to prepare his lunch, she began to wonder how much longer it would be before he could be considered a candidate for Gamma Flight, the first trainee level of the Flight tiers.

Although Narya looked delicate, she was half god, and was actually stronger than she looked. Even so, she knew that great strength would not be enough to defend Canada. She would not lie to her son. He would have to be trained properly in order to face dangerous situations.

But Richard, although still young and innocent, already had a great amount of compassion for one who was still a child. During a neighborhood blackout, he had insisted on going around their project, seeing who needed assistance. And then, volunteering to help them in any way possible. Also, he was showing signs of already choosing a future career. He wanted to be a police officer, like his father, Douglas Thompson.

Everything was happening so quickly. At Richard’s growth rate, he would be a teenager in a couple of years. Would he be able to handle his swift maturation?

“Mommy, I’m hungry.” Richard spoke now. “Can I have my sandwich now? After all, I didn’t catch a lemming in my snowy owl form on the tundra.”

Narya smiled then.

“You certainly may, my sweet son. I shall serve it to you now.”

She did so. It was good to know that her son still needed her in small ordinary ways.
