Chapter Text

Blue Diamond was going through her papers, a lorgnette in one hand as she glanced at a recent report from a Lapis Lazuli. Productivity at this time of year, with the climate of this land, was becoming increasingly more difficult. Many of them have to migrate to other regions, then work from there to help the kingdom here. This was just one of fourteen lengthy reports Blue had to read, at least by Thursday.

Amethyst, that is, Steven’s friend Amethyst, hurried into Blue’s office, announcing herself only with a light tap of her fingers on the glass door. Blue glanced at her, pressed her lips together, and dropped the paper so it fell dramatically back onto the desk.

“Excuse me, Blue Diamond, Your Highness,” Amethyst began. “I don’t mean to disturb you, but I really need to speak with you.”

Blue blinked.

“Your Pearl refused to bring up a problem,” Amethyst continued, quickly, almost stumbling over her own words, “but I believe you really should know what happened so you could--”

“Since you’re here, get to the point,” Blue interrupted, glancing at her lorgnette. A Marquess had given it to Yellow as a gift, an act of chivalry that Yellow interpreted as flirtation (and offense, believing he meant she was becoming blind). Short to say, Yellow didn’t like it one bit. So she decided to give it to Blue, then, who loves fancy things. It’s beautiful, plated in pure gold. It’s more for casual reading, though Yellow really might need such glasses much more than her. But Blue likes this gift, and always uses it to give her a more stylish impression.

“A Jasper from Yellow’s court harassed one of your maids,” Amethyst said. Blue instantly looked up at her, stunned by what she’d just heard. “She almost attacked her, the Carnelian. I was forced to intervene. It was embarrassing, and she was visibly very upset. And-- And I heard it wasn’t the first time she’d done that, that Jasper,” she said. Then, in a beat, she added, “Your Highness.”

Blue dropped the lorgnette at once, moving to the bell on the desk. “This is the kind of situation I don’t tolerate!” She rang the bell, waiting until her Pearl appeared in her office.

Pearl appeared. Not hers, for some reason; Steven’s. The one that was Pink’s in the past, that is. Still, in the position to obey Blue’s orders, and regardless of which femme de chambre is nearby, obliged to answer her call. “Yes, Your Highness?”

“Pearl,” Blue began. “I will not have one of my nephew’s retainers stepping over a femme de chambre and coming here to pester me with servant gossip. Transfer this young lady to the palace guard,” she briefly gestured with a hand to Amethyst in front of her, “and make sure you do so as quickly as possible. That will be all.”

Amethyst gaped. “But-- But I just wanted to help, Blue!”

“You may go,” Blue said impassively, lenient enough to ignore being called by her name, and not as convention demands. She’s had enough already.

“Your Highness,” Pearl began. “I can explain, she--”

Both of you,” Blue ordered, above a whisper. “Now.”

They left, then. Blue took her lorgnette back, upset about the situation that had just happened.
