Chapter 1: Desolate
Chapter Text
After almost twenty hours of traveling, the three finally arrived at the Cullens' house, where the rest of the family was waiting for them. Everyone was relieved to see them back safe and sound. They approached Bella, very happy to see her again and to have saved their son and brother. No one noticed how uncomfortable Bella felt when Edward stood next to her and put his arm around her, much less when they kept talking about their relationship and how they could finally be together. Well, no one except Jasper, who kept observing her and noticing her emotions. Seeing that her family didn't understand all her discomfort, he decided to help her and took her away from everyone.
-What are you doing? - Edward said, somewhat surprised, noticing that he was being separated from Bella.
-You're all so excited that no one has noticed Bella's discomfort, - Jasper said, somewhat exasperated.
-Oh, that's right, dear. You must be exhausted from the trip. Sorry for our inconsiderateness, - Esme commented, somewhat worried.
Bella looked at Jasper and expressed her gratitude. Without leaving his side, she gathered her strength and said, - Actually, I wanted to talk to all of you before I went to rest. - I was quite nervous; she doesn't like being the center of attention, and right now all eyes were on her. Noticing her nerves, Jasper sent her some calm and confidence, so she could continue. - First, I'm so glad you're back. These past few months have been very painful for me. I haven't been the same since you left me, and... –
-Bella... –
-No, Edward, let me finish what I have to say. –
-Edward, son, let Bella express herself; she has every right to. There'll be time to talk later. Let's listen to what she has to say first. - Carlisle intervened, grabbing Edward to keep him away from Bella.
-As I was saying, I haven't been the same. I've been severely depressed, with a feeling of emptiness that still lingers. I withdrew from everyone and put myself in dangerous situations just to feel something. I have trouble sleeping, and when I do, I wake up screaming. Not only do I have nightmares about the day Edward left me in the middle of the woods where I almost died of hypothermia, I also have nightmares about Laurent's attack. If it weren't for the pack, I'd be dead in both cases. I'm also afraid that Victoria will come back for me. You left me unprotected. I was supposed to be part of this family too. You said I was your daughter, sister, best friend, partner... But it wasn't hard for you to abandon me and leave me behind like an object that no longer serves you. To me, you were my family, you were everything to me, I would have given my life without a second thought... I don't want to lose you, I don't want to feel alone again, but I can't forgive you for abandoning me. I need time to deal with everything I feel, but I do know that I can't go back to Edward... - Bella couldn't hold back her tears any longer and began to cry and nod, a lump forming in her throat and a pressure in her chest that made it hard to breathe. Jasper quickly used his gift to help Bella deal with her emotions and prevent her from suffering an anxiety attack.
After hearing Bella's whole story, the family was stunned, not knowing what to say or do. They deeply regretted having hurt their favorite human so much. They knew they had acted wrongly by leaving her behind, but after the disaster that occurred on her birthday and all the incidents that had occurred, and knowing that Eduard refused to turn her, they believed they were truly making the best decision at that time. They were unaware of the level of affection Bella felt for them in such a short time. Finally, after a few long minutes where no one said anything, Carlisle was the first to break the silence:
-Beautiful daughter, I'm so sorry for all the suffering this family has caused you. It wasn't easy for any of us to leave you behind. At the time, we believed it was the best option to keep you safe. Not everyone agreed with the decision that day, but ultimately, we made the wrong choice, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we will never forgive ourselves for making this decision without taking you into account and depriving you of the right to make your own decisions. I promise you, Bella, that we will never make the same mistake again. -
Bella couldn't stop crying and hugging herself for comfort. Alice tried to reach out to comfort her, but she pushed her away, moving away from her and hiding behind Jasper. Seeing her reaction, the pain was reflected in her face. She helplessly walked away to give her space. She felt terrible for all the pain she caused her favorite person, her best friend, her sister. Eduard was stunned when he heard Bella say she didn't want to get back together with him. He was sure that once they returned to Forks after Bella had confronted the Volturi for him, they would pick up their relationship where they left off. He was confident that Bella would forgive him, as she always had. And hearing her say those words in front of her entire family and seeing how devastated she was, he knew that this time he had screwed up and there was no going back. He had lost his reason for existing and didn't know how to get it back. On the other hand, Emmet also tried to get closer to Bella, but Rosalie stopped him by shaking her head. Rosalie knew that the pain of betrayal Bella felt would take time to heal and that she needed her space to deal with everything. She had never liked Bella, she didn't understand her desire to become one of them and give up everything, but she knew better than anyone what it felt like to be betrayed by those you love most.
-Bella, darling...- Esme tried to slowly approach her to comfort her, speaking tenderly and gently, as if speaking to a scared little kitten. As she approached, Bella was still hiding behind Jasper's back and clinging to his shirt as if her life depended on it. In a barely audible whisper, filled with tears, Bella begged him:
-I want to go home... Please...- Jasper, sensing all her suffering and trying to cope with everyone's emotions, used his gift to calm her and instill security and confidence in Bella.
-I'll take Bella home; she needs to rest, and it will be good for all of us to continue this another time. -
-No need, I can take her, - Edward interrupted Jasper, trying to get a moment alone with Bella so they could sort things out. Hearing that, Bella tensed and clung even more to Jasper as if he were her lifeline. Jasper again conveyed confidence and security, replying, - No, Eduard, you're the last person she wants to be with right now. I think it's clear she doesn't feel right with either of you and she needs her time. - With that, he turned to pick Bella up and left as quickly as he could for Bella's house, leaving behind a family filled with pain and regret for their actions.
Upon arriving at the Swans' house, Jasper saw that Charlie's patrol car wasn't there, so without letting go of Bella, who was still clinging to him crying, he asked for her keys and took her to her room. He gently placed her on her bed, and she wrapped herself in a ball. He covered her with a blanket from the armchair and placed a glass of water on her nightstand. He was about to leave when he heard Bella ask,
-Jasper...-
-Tell me, Bella? -
-Can you stay and use your gift on me? –
-Bella, I don't think that… -
-Please… I can't take it anymore… - she said, broken and crying. – There isn't a night that I don't wake up screaming… from the nightmares, since… you left… and I need to be able to rest, I need to be able to forget for a moment all this pain, this emptiness, that tears me apart inside… please Jasper… I can't take it anymore… I can't take it anymore… - Hearing her pleas in a broken and suffering voice, Jasper gave in, unable to deny her request, since as an empath he felt all her pain. He sat down in the rocking chair, and began to transmit calm and lethargy to her to help her sleep. Bella thanked him and little by little she began to breathe more slowly until she finally managed to fall asleep.
While Bella slept, he sent a text to Alice to let her know he was staying at Bella's house to help her sleep. He was aware of her emotions and decided to pick up one of Bella's books to pass the time. After a few hours, he suddenly felt overwhelmed by a wave of very intense negative emotions coming from Bella. He noticed that Bella began to stir and clench her jaw to contain her cries. He concentrated to avoid being influenced by these emotions and to be able to help her. Little by little, his gift began to take effect on her, and he noticed how her body was slowly relaxing. This time, he transmitted more lethargy to deepen her sleep and help her rest.

Chapter Text
Around seven in the morning, he heard Charlie's patrol car arrive home, so he hid in Bella's closet just in case so they wouldn't discover him. A few minutes later, the bedroom door opened, and he saw Charlie come in and approach a sleeping Bella. Charlie noticed that Bella had fallen asleep in her street clothes, without even taking off her shoes, and was covered only with a blanket. As he got closer, he noticed that she had dried tears running down her face. He carefully took off her shoes, but at that moment, she woke up.
- Dad? - he said, his voice still hoarse.
- Oh, I'm sorry, Bells. I didn't mean to wake you. I wanted to know if you were home yet, and I saw you fell asleep in your shoes, and I wanted to take them off...-
- Yeah, sorry, Jasper brought me home yesterday after I came back from Italy and went to his house... and I just fell asleep dressed. –
- You know what we need to talk about, right? You can't just leave me a note saying you're going to Italy to save Edward and then just leave. And why did Jasper bring you? And Edward and Alice? Didn't they come back with you? Are they still in Italy? What happened, Bells? –
- We came back from Italy together, and they took me straight to their house, but after I told them how I felt… everything that had happened since they left me behind… that I needed time to heal and… that I wasn't going back to Edward, - She explained with a broken voice, holding back the urge to cry, - I asked Jasper to bring me home. –
- Oh… You broke up with Edward? Are you sure? I know what he means to you and everything you've suffered and continue to suffer since they left... I know I've never liked him, but... -
- I'm sure, Dad. I only went to Italy... to prevent him from doing something stupid and having it on my conscience or on his family's, but... I know I don't want to go back to him... as much as I love him... I can't be with someone who doesn't listen to me and makes decisions for me without considering me... or who uses my insecurities to get his way... You were right, Dad, Edward isn't for me... - She managed to tell him as tears escaped her eyes.
Listening to her and seeing how devastated she was, Charlie couldn't scold him like he'd planned to when he saw the note telling her she was leaving for Italy, and simply hugged her. Bella snuggled up in his arms while she let out all her pain through her tears. They stayed like that for an hour until Bella finally calmed down and stopped crying.
- Do you want to go out for breakfast? –
- But you just got home from your night shift and today is Tuesday, I have to go to school, I don't know if… -
- Don't worry, Bells, I can sleep later. I'm working the night shift again today, and don't worry about school. I told them yesterday that you were sick and would be out for a few days. You can stay home today so you can recover from the trip and everything that happened yesterday. –
- Thanks, Dad. I'd love to have breakfast with you, but I think I should shower first. –
- Okay, I'll wait for you in the living room. I'll use the downstairs bathroom to clean up too. When you're ready, we'll go. - He kissed her forehead and left.
Once she heard her father come down the stairs, Bella started calling Jasper.
- Jasper? –
- Hi, Bella. - He opened her closet and came out.
- I wasn't sure if you were still here. Thanks for staying...- she said, somewhat embarrassed and nervous.
- You don't have to thank me, Bella. It's the least I can do. If it weren't for me... –
- What do you mean? - She asked him, somewhat puzzled and frowning.
- Because of what happened on your birthday, if I hadn't lost control, Edward wouldn't have told us to leave, you'd still be together now, and no one would be suffering right now... –
- It wasn't your fault, Jasper. I've never blamed you. -
Jasper was surprised to notice that Bella's emotions reflected what he was saying, and he was confused. He didn't understand why she couldn't blame him when it was literally his attempt to drain her that made the entire family leave to protect her, devastated by having to leave her behind. - Why don't you blame me? I don't understand... –
- Do you mind if we talk about it later? When I get back from breakfast with Charlie, he's waiting for me now, and this conversation needs more than just a few minutes... –
- Okay, I'll pick you up when you call. –
- Okay, and thank you so much for everything you've done. - He approached her, gave her a hug, and conveyed his gratitude with his emotions. He was surprised by her actions, but hugged her back and left through the window.
After half an hour, Bella was ready, putting on black and white Converse shoes, worn black jeans, and a black Guns N' Roses short-sleeved T-shirt. They went to the restaurant for breakfast. Charlie was still worried about Bella, but he was happy to have her back home and felt that Bella was stronger, that she wasn't the same person she had been a few months ago. He was surprised to learn that despite the Cullen family and Edward's return to Forks, she didn't want to go back with him. He knew how much his daughter loved Edward, and he was convinced that by going all the way to Italy to bring him back to Forks, it was because she had returned to him, especially after seeing the severe depression she had suffered after his departure and breakup. He knew she wouldn't cut all ties with Edward, as Bella considered the Cullens her family, and she would never interfere with that. But he was glad she wasn't dating that boy anymore. He didn't find their relationship healthy, as he thought they were too obsessed with each other and he had her under control.
- Bella, you said Jasper brought you home. I understand why Edward didn't, but why didn't Alice come with you? I didn't know you had such a good relationship with this boy... - he asked, somewhat intrigued.
- Well... that was because I still have to fix things with her... and right now the only people I'm not upset with or don't mind spending time with would be Rosalie and Jasper, but with Rosalie... it's complicated, we've never gotten along very well, so...-
- I understand... I know it's still early, but... –
-Dad, it's not what you're imagining. Jasper is dating Alice. He's just a friend. I won't tell you he's like a brother, but there's nothing romantic about it if that's what you're worried about. –
- It's okay, daughter. I was just asking. I don't know that boy very well, and you've never told me about him. But I'm glad he helped bring you home safely. I'm sure you weren't in any condition to return alone, judging by the way I found you sleeping and everything you've told me. –
- Yes, the truth is that he's a very good boy. He's somewhat distant, but he's always attentive to everyone and everything around him. He's very observant and was the only one who noticed I wasn't feeling well and was uncomfortable. Later, I met up with him to talk about everything that's happened... does that sound okay to you? -
- Mmmm, yes, I think it'll be good for you to talk to someone and not keep everything bottled up. I have to confess I was planning on yelling at you and grounding you for life, but... after seeing you and talking, it's the first time since you left that you've opened up. You also look better and you're eating... so I think we can start from scratch and get through this together. I just ask that you please don't disappear and lock yourself away again. You're the most important thing in my life, and if something were to happen to you... -
- I know, Dad. Thank you so much for everything, and I'm so sorry for making you suffer so much all this time... - Bella told him while hugging him and trying to hold back her tears.
They finished breakfast without any problems and went home. Charlie went straight to sleep since her night shift started at eight in the evening, and it was already ten in the morning. Bella went straight to her room to text Jasper to come get her. An hour later, Jasper arrived home. Bella went downstairs, put on her jacket, and when she came out, she was surprised to see him leaning against a bike. He was dressed in faded light blue jeans, black denim jeans, a white shirt, and a black leather jacket, which highlighted his pale skin and the blonde hair that matched the gold of his eyes.
- Is it yours? I didn't know you rode a bike, - she said, still surprised but fascinated. Jasper, seeing her reaction and noticing her emotions, which ranged from fascination to excitement, joy, and doubt, couldn't help but laugh.
- I didn't know you liked bikes so much, Bella. I'm glad I made the right choice of transportation, - he said, pleased.
- Well, it's something I discovered over the past few months, - he explained as he approached and inspected the vehicle closely. - Charlie doesn't like them. They say they're the devil's work and they're the main reason for the accidents he's been involved in. But Jacob and I secretly started fixing some bikes I found abandoned. It seemed like a good idea to entertain myself and get an adrenaline rush... - He blushed as he said this last bit.
- Adrenaline rush? I didn't know you were one of those people, - he said, smiling and raising an eyebrow.
Bella blushed even more. - I didn't know either. It's something I'd like to explore further, - she explained, looking into his eyes.
- I think I can help you with that, - he said with a dazzling smile and a playful look.
Bella put on the helmet Jasper offered her as he climbed onto the bike. She sat on the back and held onto the jacket Jasper was wearing. She was about to start the bike when Jasper took Bella's hands and placed them around her waist, pulling her into a hug. Bella became nervous and blushed profusely when she noticed Jasper's muscular body. She wasn't used to being so close to him, and she couldn't help but feel so embarrassed. Noticing her reaction, Jasper started laughing and said - You better hold on tight. You don't want to fall because of the speed. Your father would kill me. –
- Where are we going? - she asked, trying to hide her nerves.
- There's a place I like to go when I'm feeling overwhelmed and want to be alone. I think you'll like it. -
He drove for about an hour, deep into the woods until he reached a small lake with a waterfall. The place gave off a fairy tale-like feel, with that mystical and magical air surrounded by towering trees and wildflowers. He parked the bike and helped Bella get off. Bella was still fascinated by the place; it reminded her of the landscapes she imagined when reading one of her fantasy books.
- Oh, Jasper, it's beautiful. I didn't know there was something like this near Forks. –
- I discovered it by chance, one day when I needed to be alone. We don't normally come to this area... –
- Don't the others know about this place? -
- No, I always come alone. I've tried to keep it a secret, keeping it hidden from Alice and Edward's gifts. With our highly evolved senses and gifts, privacy is a luxury for us. Living as a family, with seven vampires in such a small space, we all need a place to escape to solitude, especially Edward and me, since our gifts overwhelm us too much. In his case, because he can't stop hearing thoughts, or in mine, because he can't stop feeling all the emotions around me. –
- How do you manage to hide it from him? –
- Well, once you know how her gifts work, it's quite simple. Alice's visions are based on decisions, probabilities. You just have to hold off on making any decisions until the last minute or overwhelm her with an overload of possibilities so that it's impossible for her to see you. Since her visions are based on the possible decisions others make and on observable data, that future can always change; it's not fixed, so the more indecisive you are, the more you hinder her gift. And with Edward, you just have to overwhelm him with other thoughts so that he won't want to read you. In my case, I use my memories from before I was with the Cullens. So, he rarely tries to read me. With practice, you become permanently proficient, and it's impossible for him to read you if you don't want him to. In the family we usually do it easily Alice, Carlisle and I, Emmett sometimes tries it too, but he always ends up leaking and ends up reading it, although he almost always thinks about his intimate moments with Rose, so Edward himself avoids it from his mind - He was explaining with a smile while they approached some rocks and got comfortable to talk while observing the landscape. They sat down next to each other from each other, but facing each other halfway so they could see each other while they talked, while also gazing at the waterfall and the lake.
- This place must be special if you go to all this trouble to keep it secret... Why did you bring me here? Don't get me wrong, I love it and I'm very grateful, but if it's so important to you, aren't you afraid they'll find out because of me? -
Jasper noticed her nervousness, which quickly turned to guilt, and sent waves of calm and confidence her way, making her feel at ease. - I thought this would be a good place to talk without being interrupted. I'm sure when they see I'm not at school; Edward will come looking for us; he'll know I'm with you. And don't worry, they won't discover this place. - He smiled reassuringly. They were silent for a few minutes, absorbing the tranquillity the place conveyed, until Jasper decided to ask her again why she didn't blame him.
- You said before that you've never blamed me for what happened on your birthday... Why? –

Chapter Text
Bella watched him, gave him a shy smile and while she was playing in the grass she began to tell him. – “I could never blame you, you're an empathic vampire, you weren't the only one who felt the thirst for blood that night, I saw it in your eyes, everyone's eyes darkened, including Carlisle. Besides, I'm Edward's singer, just feeling his thirst for blood all at once had to be overwhelming for you, and considering there were five other vampires more..., adding to your own thirst... You had to deal with too much, it wouldn't be fair to blame you. I told Edward, the day he left me in the woods... “- Remembering that night in the woods Bella felt rage, desolation, sadness, disappointment invade her... and she began to feel an overwhelming feeling of emptiness in her chest and hyperventilate, Jasper, noticing it, sent waves of calm her, approached her, put her on his lap to hug her and began to stroke her back to comfort her. She hugged him back and snuggled into his chest as she cried and calmed down.
- "Thank you, Jas..." –
- "Thank you, Bella, for trusting me, even when I didn't... I've always considered myself the weakest in the family because I struggled with my bloodlust control. We often moved because of me... because of my mistakes... I always believed it was because of my past, not my gift... That's why I rely so heavily on Alice's gift to ensure I wouldn't slip up again, but I think that made me let my guard down on your birthday. I got too confident and almost..." - Bella hugged him tighter, sensing the anguish in his voice. Noticing her gesture, Jasper leaned his head against hers and focused on the peace she conveyed.
- "Jasper, would you tell me your story? When you mention your past, I realized I really know nothing about you..." - Jasper sensed the shift in Bella's emotions and felt shame and curiosity wash over him. He couldn't help but smile.
- "Of course, but you should know that my story is different from my brothers'. I was born on April 5, in 1844 in Houston, Texas. My real name is Jasper Whitlock. I don't remember much about my human life, except that we had a farm and that I had a little sister. When I was 16, almost 17, I joined the Confederate Army, pretending to be 20. I lied about my age to get in. I pretended to be older, and I always had a good people skill. I guess that's why I ended up being an empathic vampire. At 19, I became the youngest major in history." –
- "So that means you're now around..." - Bella starts counting on her fingers.
- "I'm 181, the second oldest after Carlisle." –
- "Wow... I thought you were the youngest... Because of the way they treat you..."-
- "Yeah, sometimes I feel that way too. I guess that's why it's hard for me to feel completely part of the family, even though Carlisle and Esme consider me a son. It feels weird being older than Esme and considering her my mother..."-
- "So when did you convert? What happened?" –
- "I was converted in 1863, when I was 19, shortly after becoming a Major. When I was coming back from Galveston, I ran into three women. At that time, we had to evacuate the women and children and take them to Houston. I didn't realize they weren't human until it was too late. Their names were Maria, Lucy, and Nettie. They had just lost their territory and their families. When they saw my uniform, they thought I might be useful to them, so Maria decided to transform me, since she had the best control. Thanks to my help and my gift, we managed to create an army of newborns to fight in the southern wars and gain territory.” –
- "Newborns?" –
- "Yes, they are newborn vampires; that's what they're called during their first year of life. This is when vampires are strongest and fastest, since they have the blood they had when they were human. But it's also when they are most out of control, and all they think about is satisfying their most primal instincts, which are bloodlust and lust." - Jasper took off his jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves to show her the scars on his arm.
- "Oh, Jasper... are those bites?" - Bella began touching his scars with her fingertips.
- "Yes, my entire body is covered in scars. If you were a supernatural being, you'd be afraid and consider me dangerous. Because you'd only see my marks, like a neon sign warning of danger..." –
- "Is that why you always wear long sleeves?" –
- "Yes, I don't feel comfortable showing them. I'm empathetic, and I notice their reaction when they see them. It's not pleasant to feel that they're afraid and disgusted by you. I don't blame them; it's instinctive. That's why I prefer to cover them up..."- he said with a resigned grimace. Bella continued caressing his scars, snuggling closer to him and trying to hold back her tears.
- "And why did he want to gain more territory?" - she whispered, trying to get him to continue telling his story.
- "By gaining more territory, you have more food at your fingertips, and it's also a symbol of power. Maria wanted revenge for the death of her true mate and his family, which is why she devised this plan. She converted me for my military skills, but upon discovering my gift, I proved to be more useful to her than she initially expected. Thanks to my gift, I could control and train newborns. When they reached their first year, and if they had no gift, then I was in charge of killing them and creating new newborns and training them. At that time, I believed that Maria loved me, and she always compensated me with sex or blood, to ensure my loyalty. Over time, Maria and I killed Lucy and Nettie, as I sensed with my gift that they wanted to betray her because they considered her to have too much power. Maria was ruthless, very intelligent, and distrustful, which made her dangerous. If you didn't meet her goals, she would cruelly punish you and torture you both physically and emotionally. Although she also rewarded you with food and sex to control you. I was on that routine for decades, killing thousands of humans and vampires, I only knew that life of chaos until I turned Peter, Peter transmitted emotions that until that moment were unknown to me, he has a personality similar to Emmett's, and emanated happiness despite the situation, that attracted me and I became fond of him, I knew I had to hide this affection from Maria, since she was very distrustful, so when it was time to eliminate him, I convinced Maria that Peter was valuable because of his fighting ability and he ended up becoming captain. A few decades passed and Peter found his partner in a newborn named Charlotte, Maria said to kill her at the end of her neophyte year, I knew I couldn't do that to Peter so I let them escape. This made Maria furious and she punished me by torturing me for three whole days. From that moment on, she never trusted me again, and I knew she was planning to kill me. I was planning on getting rid of her when Peter showed up and took me away in 1938, after seventy-five years with Maria." - Jasper stopped talking when he heard Bella's cries and went back to stroking her back reassuringly.
- "What did he do to you... in those three days..." - she managed, his voice choked with tears.
- "She tore off my arms and legs, injected me with poison with his bites and scratches, leaving scars, and he almost tore out my heart. He didn't, but the mark remained, as he smeared his hands with poison to remind me of my betrayal."- He continued to comfort Bella as he recounted his experience. " - She deprived me of blood all that time so it would take me longer to regenerate and so the scars would become more pronounced." –
- "Can I see it?" - Bella watched him as she asked. He nodded, and she unbuttoned his shirt, her hands shaking, until his torso was bare. She focused on the area where his heart is and saw the marks. Without thinking, she began to touch the scar with her fingers. Jasper flinched slightly at the touch.
- "I'm sorry. Did I hurt you?" - Bella was about to withdraw her hand when Jasper placed his hand on top of hers.
- "No, calm down. I just wasn't expecting it. I'm not used to being touched, not even by Alice... She doesn't want to remind me of the past, so she tends to ignore them... and considering my body is covered in scars..." - Jasper noticed fury emanating from Bella. He was about to ask her when he was suddenly surprised to notice Bella kissing him on the scars where his heart is and hugging him, wrapping her arms around his waist inside his shirt. He was shocked by her reaction; no one had ever reacted like that to his scars or his history. He was used to being disgusted and contemptuous, even wary and afraid, but Bella felt none of that; she only felt anger, love, sadness... He couldn't help but hold her tighter to feel her more. They stayed that way in silence, embracing each other, breathing in each other's scent and comforting each other. All he could hear was the sound of nature, their breathing, and Bella's heartbeat. They stayed like that for about an hour, until Bella spoke again.
- "It's not fair... such a good person like you, and for you to have to go through all that... especially with your gift, it must have been horrible for you..." –
- "I'm not that good Bella, I did terrible things, I had no mercy..." –
- "It's not true," - Bella told him as she shifted onto his lap, straddling him so she could look him in the eyes. - "You did what was necessary to survive, you didn't know any better, you were created for that, and yet you managed to turn your life around, even risking your life to save Peter and Charlotte, you are a very good person, don't ever doubt that." - She cupped his face in both hands. - "You deserve everything good in this world, Jasper. Never doubt yourself. You told me in Phoenix that I was worth it, when I asked you why you would risk your lives for me. Well, I'll tell you the same now. You're worth it, Jasper. You're worth everything. You're kind. You always try to help your loved ones. You risk everything without hesitation, even if it puts you in danger. You risked it for Peter, for Charlotte, even for me when you barely knew me. Eduard always told me that when you turn, you lose your soul and become frozen in time. That you never change, that you're the same forever. But you, Jasper, have proven that's not true, that you can change and improve. You don't value yourself enough.” - She held back tears as she spoke to him. Jasper had his hands on Bella's waist. He placed his right hand on top of Bella's left hand, which was still holding her face, and began to caress it. He used his gift to convey gratitude, love, and happiness. When Bella noticed, she smiled and hugged him, putting her face in his neck.
Bella began to feel restless and began to transmit fear.
- "What's bothering you? Your emotions are in turmoil, and I can tell you're scared," - he said, stroking her head.
- "I was wondering... What happened to Maria? Did she die?" –
- "No... she's still in the south. When I left, she lost influence with the newborns; it wasn't as easy for her to control them, so she lost some territory. That's why she tried to recruit me again when we were living in Calgary, but since she saw I was in another coven, she didn't insist much. Anyway, Peter and Charlotte have always kept me informed of their movements ever since." - Hearing that, Bella clung to him even more, as if he would disappear if she let go. Jasper sensed her concern and sent waves of calm and reassurance to reassure her. - "Don't worry, she won't do anything to me, she won't be able to recruit me again. She knows I won't leave of my own free will, and she knows she can't fight me; she knows my abilities." - He explained to comfort her.
- "I don't like knowing she's still alive and that she still wants you with her... How do you know she won't try again? That she won't try to get revenge if she doesn't get you back? I don't want her to hurt you anymore..." - She wept inconsolably as she shared all her fears with him.
- "I don't know for sure, but I do know that if she tries, I won't hesitate to kill her, and she knows it. And I'm not alone anymore. I have the Cullens, Peter, Charlotte, and other nomads who also fled from Maria and want her dead." - Hearing this, Bella calmed down, although she was still worried.
- "I'd like to meet Peter and Charlotte... Do you think I can?" - she asked nervously but hopefully.
- "Do you want to meet them? Why?" - he asked, surprised.
- "Can't I?" - she said in a barely audible whisper.
- "Yes, of course, I'm just surprised, that's all. I didn't think you'd want to meet them... they don't follow the same diet as us... -
- “I know, I assumed... But I don't care... they saved you... I want to thank them... and... it seems like they're very important to you... you can tell when you say their names... “- She whispered, embarrassed, while still hiding her face in his neck. Jasper felt really happy and kissed the top of her head to convey his joy.
- “They'll be delighted to know you want to meet them too. They're really curious about you, you know?” - Bella, hearing this, jerked around to look at him.
- “They want to meet me?” - Jasper laughed at her reaction.
- “Of course, ever since they found out that a human was voluntarily dating one of us and accepting us, knowing what we are, they've been dying to see you in person.” -
- “And why haven't they ever been here? Do they live far away?” -
- “They live far away, but that's not why. They could easily get there on a five-hour run.” –
- “So?” - Bella stared into his eyes as she waited for his answer. Jasper knew she wasn't going to like his response, knowing her.
- “Because of Edward. He thought he was too dangerous because of his diet, and since what happened with James, he thought if you met them and saw their eyes, you'd be scared and it would bring back bad memories…” - Jasper felt Bella getting angrier and angrier with Edward.
- “Edward… Always the same, thinking he can control and command everyone. He doesn't ask questions, he just acts without listening to anyone's opinions. I'm fed up,”- she said furiously. - “I know you're vampires and that you feed on human blood. It's your natural food. That doesn't scare me. I know not everyone is like James or Victoria. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to date him. Even if you decided to change your diet and go back to feeding on humans, it wouldn't change my opinion or the feelings I have for you.” -
Jasper couldn't help but feel happy with Bella's reaction and her words. When Bella noticed Jasper's face and saw how he smiled at her reaction, she couldn't help but blush and feel embarrassed about everything. Just then, Jasper's phone started ringing.

Chapter Text
Jasper picked up his phone and saw it was a video call from his brother.
- "Hey Peter, I was just thinking of calling you," - he said, smiling.
- "Is that why you greet me so seductively? You know you don't have to dress so sexy to get my attention, honey," - Peter said, making eyes at her and winking. Jasper's mouth fell open at his unexpected greeting, and Bella couldn't hold back her laughter at the situation. At that moment, Jasper realized he was wearing his shirt unbuttoned and completely bare-chested with Bella straddling him.
- "Is that Alice's laugh? Did I catch you at a bad moment?" - Peter asked, raising his eyebrows, suggesting perversion.
- "You're an idiot, Captain. Do you really think I'd answer the phone if that were the case? And no, it's not Alice, it's Bella." – At that moment, she placed the phone so Peter could see both Jasper and Bella, and Bella shifted onto his lap to be more comfortable.
- “Hi, Peter,” - Bella said, somewhat amused.
- “Oh, hello, miss. I didn’t know you two had that kind of relationship. Don’t worry, I won’t tell Alice or Edward anything,” - he said, wiggling his eyebrows up and down continuously with a mischievous smile.
- “What?” - she said, alarmed.-“No, it’s not… it’s not what it seems… we don’t have that kind of relationship… it’s not what you think…” - Bella couldn’t stop stuttering from nerves and was red-faced with embarrassment. Peter and Jasper, seeing her reaction, started laughing.
- “Calm down, honey, Peter’s joking. He just wanted to tease you and see your reaction.” - Bella narrowed her eyes as she looked at Peter and said. - “It’s not funny…” - She pouted and hid her face in Jasper’s torso, while he stared at her and smiled. Jasper continued to hold her with his right hand, while holding the phone with his left. Peter was surprised to see their interaction; he didn't remember them being so close. The last thing he heard was that his brother was afraid he couldn't stand her bloodlust and preferred to stay away from her. He cleared his throat and asked:
- "So, Major, you said you wanted to call me. Did something happen?" - Jasper looked at him smiling.
- "A lot has happened since we last talked," - he said, laughing as he looked at Bella. - "But I wanted to call you to find out when you and Charlotte could come over." -
- "I thought it wasn't a good idea for us to come, because of..." - Peter began, glancing at Jasper and Bella alternately, but stopped when he realized what he was about to reveal.
- "Don't worry, Bella already knows that Edward didn't want you to come." -
- "Peter, Edward and I are no longer a couple. And even if we were, he doesn't have the right to decide who I can and can't meet. Jasper has told me about his past, and I would love to meet you both and thank you." - Bella began to explain, blushing and curling up again against Jasper's chest.
- "Thank us?" - Peter said, somewhat surprised.
- "I explained that it was thanks to you that I was able to escape from Maria." - He clarified to Peter while looking at Bella and stroking her head.
- "You don't have to thank us, Cookie. We would do anything for our Major. If it weren't for him, Charlotte and I wouldn't be together and alive. The Major is like our brother, which is why we proudly bear his last name," - Peter told Bella in a sweet and kind tone.
- "Do you have the last name Whitlock?"-
- "Yes, I gave them my last name, since none of them remembered theirs, and they wanted to use it as a thank you. To me, they're also like my brothers, even though I was the one who turned them." - He explained to Bella while continuing to stroke her head. She looked at him and asked:
- "Doesn't that mean you're the leader of their coven?" -
- "In theory, yes, but I've never treated them as if I were their leader. We've always been family; we consider each other brothers in practice." - Peter was still amazed to see him so comfortable with her and how carefree he seemed. I've never seen him so relaxed and showing his scars so openly outside of a fight.
- "Well, Charlotte will be here soon. I'll tell her we'll be spending some time in Forks. She'll be happy, she misses you, Major." -
- "I miss you too. When will you arrive? I have to let Esme and Carlisle know, especially to deal with Edward." -
- "Is it okay three days from now? We should arrive on Friday." -
- "Yes, perfect. Then call me when you're about to arrive. We'll also let the pack know you're our guests. Say hi to Charlotte for me." -
- "Okay. Bye, Major, bye, Cookie." -
- "Goodbye, Peter," - Bella said, smiling at him.
- "Wait, Peter. You haven't told me the reason for your call, what with one thing and another." -
- "Oh, don't worry, Major. I just felt I had to call you. You know how it works." - They both nod and finally end the call.
- " Well, you already know Peter. What came to you? " –
- "It's very funny, but I think if he gets together with Emmett, I'm going to suffer from his jokes," - she said, biting her lower lip.
- "Don't doubt it. Knowing them, they'll both love seeing you blush because of their jokes," - he said, laughing. He checked the time before putting away his phone. - "It's already two in the afternoon. Do you want to go to Port Angeles to get something to eat?" - He looked at her curiously, noticing her emotions fluctuating between surprise, excitement, and hope.
- "Can we really go?" - she said, somewhat shy and embarrassed. Jasper caressed her face while continuing to hold her in his lap.
- "Sure, but if you'd rather do something else, let me know." -
- "It's not that. It's just... I thought you'd want to go home..." -
- "Well, I have no intention of taking you home yet. If it weren't for the fact that you need to feed yourself, we could stay here a little longer. Besides, it wouldn't be long from here, and we could take advantage of the opportunity to spend the afternoon in the city. There's a bookstore I frequent that carries limited and out-of-print books that are hard to find. We could stop by after lunch if you'd like. -
- "That would be perfect," - Bella replied with a big, happy smile.
Jasper stood up with Bella in his arms and carefully placed her on the floor. He began to button his shirt when he noticed Bella looking at him, blushing. He couldn't help himself and said in a playful, mischievous tone:
- "Do you like what you see?" - Bella blushed even more and looked away, covering her face with her hands when he said it.
- "It's not that... I mean, it's not that you're not attractive... you know I am... but that's not why I was looking at you... I was just remembering... how daring I was... before... when... unbuttoning your shirt... and..." - Jasper couldn't help but be amused by the situation and her reaction, so he decided to tease her a little more. He leaned closer and whispered in her ear:
- "And when you kissed my scar?" - Bella was surprised by the sudden closeness, while feeling a shiver run down her spine when she heard his voice in her ear. She would have almost fallen over, had it not been for Jasper's quick reaction of wrapping his arms around her waist to stop her.
- "Thank you," - she said, very shy.
- "Forgive me, I didn't mean to scare you. Your reaction was so funny that I couldn't help but tease you a little more..." - He confessed, somewhat embarrassed.
- "Don't worry, you're not the only one who gets a kick out of my reactions... I'm used to it thanks to Emmett and Jacob, and from the looks of it, I have to add you and Peter to the list," - she told him with a smile.
- "It seems so." - He answered with a dazzling smile. They remained in that same pose for a few more moments, until Bella's stomach began to rumble with hunger. - "Looks like we have to go now," - he said, amused.
- "I'd love to," - Bella said happily. Jasper was satisfied with the emotions Bella was conveying. He let go of her waist and finished straightening his shirt. He picked up his jacket from the floor, and they headed to the bike.
- "Do you want to drive it to Port Angeles?" -
- "Really? Can I?" - she asked, surprised.
- "If you want, yes. You said you wanted to continue exploring the adrenaline rushes," - he said, amused.
- "Yes, I do!" - she exclaimed, all excited. - "But... the last time I rode one, I had a minor accident... I got distracted and fell... I wasn't wearing a helmet, so they had to put some small stitches in my forehead..." - she said, all embarrassed.
Jasper started laughing, imagining the scene. - "Don't worry, Bella. Nothing will happen to you with me. If I see that we might have an accident, I'll help you avoid it. You know that at the speed we're going, it's still quite slow for my vision, so it will be easy to control the situation at all times. Don't worry, trust me." - Bella's face lit up with his words, and she conveyed confidence, gratitude, happiness, and love to Jasper, as she said:
- "I trust you. Thank you so much." - And she gave him a hug. Jasper smiled at her words and emotions and conveyed his own. He gave her the helmet to put on and helped her get on the bike. He explained how to drive it and sat behind her, holding her waist, careful not to hurt her.
After forty-five minutes, they arrived in Port Angeles. When they reached the entrance to the city, they stopped and both took off their helmets.
- "That was amazing!! Thank you so much for letting me drive it," - Bella said excitedly as she turned to look at him. Jasper, feeling all her joy, gave her a smile.
- "I'm glad you liked it. I told you you had nothing to worry about. What do you feel like eating?" -
Bella thought for a while until she finally made a decision. - "I feel like eating a poke bowl... salmon, preferably." - She said, tilting her head back and resting it on his torso so she could look at his face. Jasper looked at her doubtfully and asked, puzzled:
- "Poke bowl? What is it?" -
- "You don't know..." "Oh, of course. You haven't eaten human food in ages," - she says, amused.
- "Almost two, to be more precise," - he says, poking her nose with his finger while smiling. Bella laughs at her reaction.
- "Well, to answer your question... It's a typical Hawaiian dish, although many people believe it's of Japanese origin. It has rice, marinated raw fish, and vegetables, fruits, and sauces like soy sauce are often added. It's very versatile and healthy, and it's delicious. Too bad you can't eat it." - She comments this last bit, pouting and feigning sadness, unable to hide the fun she's having.
- "Well, let's find a restaurant that serves it and trade places. You don't want to get stopped and asked for your ID." - Bella nods, and they both search for a restaurant on their cell phones. After about five minutes, they find one near the harbor, not far from the bookstore Jasper had planned to take Bella to. Jasper places Bella behind him, they both put their headphones back on, and Bella grabs onto his waist to keep from falling, this time without embarrassment.
Once they arrive at the restaurant, they order a table for two. Bella orders a salmon poke bowl with avocado, mango, cucumber, edamame, wakame seaweed, and soy sauce. She orders a Coke to drink. Jasper simply orders a bottle of water and nothing else. When they bring Bella her plate, Jasper watches her eat and makes strange faces at the smell.
- "Is that really good? If you knew how it smells to me, I highly doubt you'd eat it so happily." -
- "I could say the same about your diet," - she says, amused. And adds in a low voice, - "It's not like blood smells good; it smells like rust." - She makes the same faces as Jasper, and they both start to laugh.
- "I remind you that this will be your favorite and only food when you're like us. It's ironic that you're apprehensive about blood, but want to be one of us," - he says, mocking her. Bella can't help but roll her eyes and continue eating.
- "By the way, earlier when you were talking to Peter, he said something about feeling he should call you. What did he mean?" -
- "It's true, I haven't told you about Peter's gift. Peter also has a gift, although if you ask him, he'll tell you no, that he just knows things. You could say his gift is a mix between knowing things about the future and having extremely developed intuition. Sometimes he knows things he shouldn't know, but he does. Other times he can see things that haven't happened yet, but will." –
- "So he's like Alice? "–
- "No, Alice is based on possibilities based on the decisions one makes. On the other hand, what Peter sees or knows is immutable, it will happen no matter what. You could say he has a sixth sense." –
- "How interesting. I can't wait for the weekend to come so I can meet them both." –
Jasper smiles at Bella's words; he knows she's completely sincere because of what her emotions convey. He's happy that she wants to meet them and at the same time intrigued. Bella continues eating, and after a few minutes, Jasper asks,- "Can I ask you what's happened during the six months we've been away?"- Bella tenses at his question and stops eating. Sensing her apprehension, Jasper feels he's put his foot in it, since the last thing he wants is to make her feel bad. - "If you don't want to or can't, there's no need." "I was curious about what you said earlier about the bikes with Jake, and what you said the other night about Laurent…"- Bella takes a deep breath to calm herself and says, - "No, it's okay. You've opened up before; mine is just silly compared to that…" -
- "Bella, it's not silly. Whatever you're feeling isn't silly, they're just different experiences. I've felt your pain. I assure you, I've never felt so much pain coming from someone and still been able to stand up like you do. You're stronger than you think, Bella." -
- "Thanks… Although I still don't think it's that bad…" She says, somewhat embarrassed. "If it's you, I don't mind telling you. I think I'll feel better if I can share it with someone impartial, from whom I won't have to hide the supernatural parts…" - She says this last bit in a whisper, afraid someone might hear them. – You see, the day after my birthday party… Edward took me to the woods after school… he told me you were leaving Forks. At first, I thought I was included… but… I was wrong… he told me he didn't love me… that he was tired of pretending… tired of having to take care of me… he told me that in time I would be able to forget him… that it would be like you had never existed… then he left… he left me alone in the woods… – She couldn't hold back her tears any longer and began to cry. Jasper sat closer to her and began to hug her while transmitting calm with his gift. – Calm down, you don't have to continue if you can't. – Jasper was telling her while he hugged her and stroked her head.
- "Thanks... But I want to tell you, I need to." -
- "Okay, take all the time you need." -
- "I tried to follow him... obviously it was in vain, but... I was desperate... I didn't want to lose him... lose you... I ran and screamed his name... until I tripped and twisted my ankle... I curled up on the floor... I was like that for a few hours, it was nighttime when Sam Uley found me and took me to Charlie's... I had hypothermia, they told me that any longer and I would have died if they hadn't found me... I was hospitalized for a couple of days to fully recover..." - At that moment, Jasper hugged her tighter and had to contain his anger towards his brother so as not to influence Bella. - "After that, I emailed Alice every day and tried to call her, but it appeared as if she didn't exist." It really was like you guys didn't exist, I didn't even have the pictures or the gifts you gave me, Edward took everything before taking me to the woods... the only thing he didn't take was the radio you gave me, but... I ended up taking it away because I couldn't stand to listen to music without increasing my suffering... Months went by until Charlie threatened to return to Phenix with my mother... I didn't want to... if I stayed in Forks... it was proof enough that you were real and in time maybe I would be able to see you again... Charlie couldn't stand me wasting away in life... I barely ate... I didn't go out with anyone, I only went to and from school... I had nightmares every night... well I still have them... Charlie hasn't rested since that day... every night he wakes up because I scream at him... that's why... I asked you to stay and help me sleep... After begging and promising to go out with Jessica and Jake, Charlie gave me one last chance... so I tried to work things out with my friends... I asked Jessica to go to the movies... and I suggested I fix Jake's bikes... But it was in those moments when I discovered that adrenaline helped me feel better... to feel alive... to simply feel... since I only felt empty, as if something inside me had been ripped out... at first it was only because of the hope that Edward would appear... since when he started getting closer to me, that's when some guys were chasing me and wanted to abuse me... You must think I'm stupid, right? - she says with an attempt at a smile as she continues to cry, cuddled up to him.
- "Never." - He says, hugging her tighter without hurting her and kissing her on the head, while continuing to stroke her head and transmitting calm. They continued to hug each other in silence, while she calmed down.
- "And what happened with Laurent? How did he find you?" –
- I was in Edward's meadow... I wanted to say goodbye to him... to let him go for good... I was ready to take the plunge... At that moment, I was worried about Jake. I hadn't heard from him for a week... I wanted him to come with me so I wouldn't be alone... I didn't like being alone in the woods after what happened with Edward, and... I also didn't feel calm in case Victoria showed up again... but I needed to say goodbye to him in that meadow. It was symbolic, and I didn't want to put it off any longer... I needed to move on... that's when he appeared... in front of me... with red eyes... He asked me where you were... Victoria had sent him, he wanted information... He was planning to hand me over to her... but he preferred to be the one to finish me off... He said it was the best thing for me... since Victoria was planning to torture me to make Edward suffer for what she did to James... "- Hearing this, Jasper tensed and couldn't hold back a growl. Bella hugged him tightly, snuggled into his neck, and gave him a reassuring kiss. Jasper began to smell her hair to calm himself, sending her a cocktail of emotions with his gift: relief and gratitude for her being alive, fear that something bad might happen to her, love for her... and he said, - "I'll never leave you alone again, and I'll personally destroy Victoria so she can never touch you and hurt you again." - He kissed her head and still didn't let go, as if she would disappear if he stopped holding her. Bella kissed him back on his neck, sending him gratitude, love, trust, and peace. - "Thank you so much, Jas..." - She whispered into hir neck. After a few moments, Bella continued explaining what had happened.
- "When Laurent was about to attack me… then suddenly some giant wolves appeared… and started chasing him… I took advantage and ran away… at that time I didn't know who they were… or if Laurent was still alive or not… it wasn't until a few days later, when I went to look for Jake that I discovered the whole truth… about the pack… about how they had finished off Laurent… and about the treaty you two have… After that I met up with Jake again and we continued fixing the bikes… until Alice appeared in her vision when she saw me jumping off a cliff… I didn't want to commit suicide… I just kept looking for activities that would give me an adrenaline rush… and when we passed by the cliff… I remembered the time I saw Sam and Paul's group jumping… so I said why not? What I didn't know was that I would find Victoria in the water… luckily Jake managed to get there first and pulled me out. And you already know the rest…" -
- "I'm so glad the pack got rid of Laurent and took care of you in our absence… I'm so sorry for leaving you unprotected… I knew it was a bad idea to leave and leave you alone with Victoria still alive, but… I had no right to oppose Edward's decision… not after what I did… what I did to you…" - Jasper hated himself for being the reason they left her alone and put her in more danger, he hated Victoria for wanting to hurt her, and most of all, he hated Edward for dragging her into his world and leaving her unprotected like this, putting her in danger not only for Victoria but for leaving her in the woods. –
- "Jas… you're projecting… "- He continued to hold her tightly, clinging to her.
- "I'm sorry…" - he said in a whisper. – "If it wasn't…" -
- "No, Jas… I've already told you, it wasn't your fault. Nothing that's happened to me was your fault... please believe me..." - She clung to him with the same intensity and need with which he clung to her.
- "I promise you I'll dedicate my life to repaying you. I won't allow anything or anyone to hurt you. They'll have to face me first if they want to reach you. You're too good, you don't deserve to suffer so much." -
- "Neither do you, Jas..." -
They stayed hugged, ignoring the prying eyes of the crowd. They needed each other's touch, they needed to know they were okay, that they had each other. They both had wounds from the past that needed healing, that they needed comfort. They needed each other like they never imagined. An unexpected, very strong feeling of protection was born in Jasper, one that went beyond feeling responsible for what happened on her birthday. He knew he was going to take care of her, to protect her from anyone who wanted to hurt her. He wanted to be her support, her comfort, because she deserved it, she was worth it, and he was going to show her. They continued silently communicating with each other through the emotions they transmitted, inhaling each other's scent to relax and feel calm, tranquil... at peace. She snuggled into his neck, and he rested his head on hers. About fifteen minutes passed until they finally separated so Bella could finish eating and go to the bookstore. It was already 4:30 in the afternoon when they finally left the restaurant and headed to the bookstore.
