OR: join Pure Vanilla and Shadow Milk as they spend a regular day together from waking up to falling back asleep.

Chapter 1: The Morning

Chapter Text

Gentle morning sunlight filled the room through a crack between the curtains, illuminating not only the many books and trinkets that rested on tall shelves but also two figures nestled together under a mountain of blankets and pillows.

The room was completely quiet other than the soft breathing of the two men embracing each other. Such a quiet stillness could, alas, only last for so long.

The man with long, cascading blond hair felt his sensitive eyes twitch as a particularly mischievous ray of sunlight decided to hit his sensitive eyes.

His head tipped down, trying to instinctively get away from the oh so mean sun. He danced the line between a state of blissful sleep and the cold, hard truth that soon he will have to leave this haven of warmth.

He wasn't sure what exactly woke him up, if it was the sunlight in his eyes or the desperate attempts to hold onto a dream that was already melting in his hands — meant to be forgotten.

Mn.

Pure Vanilla tried to cover his eyes with his hand, accepting that the sun had once again taken its victory over him. But when he tried he found that it was being pressed down by something.

His whole body was, actually.

Begrudgingly, he opened his eyes only to be greeted by the sight of blue and black hair, shimmering under the sun. He squinted his eyes as he watched thin blue lines float around in the deepest parts of darkness — still soundly asleep.

It seemed to him that the man laying on top of him had teamed up with the sun in an attempt to wake him up!

Pure Vanilla let out a deep, quiet chuckle at the thought as he tried to shift his body without disturbing the beast sleeping on him. He felt a little like a treasure hoard being protected by a mighty dragon.

However, every time he moved it was like his sleeping dragon became even heavier! Or that his hold became tighter! If it continues like this it would be impossible for him to even breathe from how hard he was being squeezed.

Sweetheart..” he called out in a whisper laced with the deep drowsiness of someone who had just woken up. Seeing, however, that this feeble attempt was not producing any results he cleared his throat.

“Honey.. you're suffocating me.” He said, a little more loudly. Despite his statement his words were filled with such a profound fondness. Truly, if he was to die now he'd die a happy man.

Why couldn't today be one of those days where they didn't have to go anywhere?

He thought as he watched the sleepy beast finally stir on top of his chest. Pure Vanilla offered the warmest of sleepy smiles — only to be met with a pair of blue eyes filled with contempt.

“…”

Ah.

Shadow Milk was never a morning person and he wasn't about to start being one today — especially not when his boyfriend smiled at him as if he was a sun reincarnate. It didn't help that the actual sunlight in the room was hitting his blond hair in such a perfect way that it made it look as if it was glowing.

Pure Vanilla breathed a sigh of relief as the grumpy beast slid off of his chest, letting him breathe and get u—

He blinked a couple of times as his boyfriend opted to instead hug him from the side, using his arms and legs… and hair.

He was now slowly being turned into a cocoon!

“Sweetheart, let me go and I'll make us some breakfast.” He tried coaxing him, but all he got in response was a deep rumble followed by the tightening of the other’s hold on his body.

Pure Vanilla would be a liar if he said that he didn't find this sleepy possessiveness of his adorable. But he couldn't waste all day indulging his boyfriend like this! There was stuff to be done! Meetings to be held!

“I'll even brew—” he started, again but this time he was cut off by a sore, deadpanned voice.

“If you move, you're dead to me.” said Shadow Milk as his face shifted to rest in the crook of his boyfriend’s neck.

“You don't mean that.” replied Pure Vanilla with that fond, dumb laugh.

“Yes I do, shut up. I'm trying to sleep.” he hissed, but any annoyance his tone had held was sufficiently nullified from the muffling of his voice.

“Won’t you at least free my arm? It's falling asleep..” asked Pure Vanilla innocently, shifting his right arm a little.

After a couple of moments the hair which had been tightly wrapped around him loosened up, letting him move his arm.

Pure Vanilla smiled to himself as he outstretched his arm towards the ceiling, letting out a small sigh of relief as he did. He looked at the back of his hand for a few, quiet moments listening as his boyfriend’s breathing started to settle down again.

Sweetheart..” he coaxed in a whisper as he used his free hand to pet Shadow Milk’s hair, being careful to not accidentally get trapped again. “—wont you let me get up?” He asked sweetly, running his knuckles gently over the beast’s smooth cheek.

Again, a deep, grumpy rumble rang out in the room — a warning!

He didn't want to get up! And he didn't want to let go!

Pure vanilla continued the same stroking motion for a while, sometimes even brushing against the other's sharp earlobe affectionately — this was truly only for his own amusement as he liked to watch Shadow Milk’s ear twitch whenever he did so.

Looking at him like this, he really reminded him of some sort of feline creature…

Cute.

He thought with a smile. Seeing that sweet talking wasn't getting him anywhere this morning Pure Vanilla started the painstaking process of gently and carefully removing each strand of hair that was wrapped around his body. Later, he moved on to very gently shifting away so as to not disturb his beloved's slumber again.

He had just managed to very slowly sit up when he felt like something cold pierced right through him. Slowly, Pure Vanilla looked down, instantly being met by a pair of cold, blue eyes.

“You tricked me.” His beloved grumbled. “I let your arm go and you used it to get away from me..” he continued. “—you must hate me.” He came to the clearly only logical conclusion!

“Of course not! My love, don't say that!” Pure Vanilla quickly replied, frowning as he leaned down until their faces were near each other.

“You hate me.” Shadow Milk repeated, firmly.

“How could I hate you?” he asked him, tilting his head a little, causing some of his long blond hair to spill over his shoulder like a glowing waterfall.

Pure Vanilla looked annoyingly pretty in the mornings.

“Well you—” Shadow Milk started only for his voice to be cut off as a pair of soft, familiar lips pressed against his temple. He blinked in owlish surprise, parting his mouth to say something only for another kiss to be pressed on his brow.

Then another came.

And another.

And another.

His face felt so hot that he felt like he was going to burn the lips of that dumb, pretty man who was insisting on peppering butterfly kisses wherever he could reach.

“Enoug— mn—” he tried to defend himself when Pure Vanilla used the killing blow — locking their lips together in a gentle, sleepy kiss.

Much to his every growing denial Shadow Milk felt himself relax as he was kissed sweetly. He exhaled softly as his boyfriend pulled away, shifting onto his elbows to steal another peck before the other could go too far.

See? How could I possibly hate you?” Pure Vanilla asked with a slightly mischievous smile as he wiped his bottom lip with his thumb.

The beast, who was now painfully awake and a little flustered (yes, just a little!) gave him a halfhearted glare.

“You're weaponizing your kisses.” He accused, still resting on his elbows.

“Perhaps. But it does work, doesn't it?” He replied with a smile while reaching out to pinch Shadow Milk’s chin, giving it a little shake. Naturally, the other made a fake snap with his teeth as if he was going to bite off his boyfriend's fingers — the only appropriate reaction to this situation if you ask him!

“I'll make us breakfast in bed.” Pure Vanilla said with a smile.

“Sure.”

“And after we eat you can return to sleep.”

His words made the beast lift up his brow. A tempting offer indeed.

“Meanwhile I'll have to head to town — I promised my friends that I'll meet them for a drink.” He continued, smiling warmly. It had been a while since all of them gathered together outside of their duties. It'll be so nice to catch up!

While Pure Vanilla was daydreaming about what a wonderful time he will have Shadow Milk decided to fully sit up.

“I'll come with.” He suddenly stated, his words firm.

Pure Vanilla instantly broke into a big, bright smile at the statement. “Really?? Are you sure? You really don't have to!” He reassured his beloved trying and failing to hide his excitement over the prospect of having his friends and his boyfriend all in one place — after all the two never usually mixed together uhm… that well.

“Yeah, I'll be bored here.” Shadow Milk waved his hand, wanting to casually dismiss the other only to be pulled into a tight embrace. His face was promptly squished against his boyfriend’s soft chest, making his face flush a little.

“How wonderful!! Afterwards you can help me with errands too! I need to get some groceries, visit the flower shop…” Pure Vanilla chirped as he continued to list chores one after another making the beast go from flushed to deathly pale.

What had his jealousy signed him up to?!

He just wanted a lazy day in bed!!

“—and then we will come back home just in time for dinner!”

Dinner?!

Shadow Milk really didn't want to go through all that trouble today… but how could he possibly say no when Pure Vanilla looked so happy just to spend time with him?

“Yeah, yeah.” He dismissed him, looking to the side until his chin was once again taken and he was brought into a sweet kiss. Unlike the other one they had shared earlier this one was longer and deeper, making his heart jump.

Thank you.” Pure Vanilla whispered against the beast’s lips as he pulled away with a smile.

“Whatever.” replied Shadow Milk, pressing the tips of his fingers against his own lips that felt like they were buzzing. No matter how many times they did this it always felt like it was his first.

“We still have some marmalade and bread left over, would you like some? I'll warm up some milk too!” Pure Vanilla chatted, smiling when the beast nodded. “Great! I'll be back in a bit!” He hummed, standing up and leaving Shadow Milk alone.

Whyyyyy

He buried his face into his hands as he tried to remember everything his boyfriend had listed off for today.

It was bound to be busy.

Chapter 2: Breakfast

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Pure Vanilla tilted his head to the side a little as he opened the second set of cupboards in their small kitchen. It seemed that they were more desperate for groceries than he had originally thought.

Some new cutlery wouldn't be that bad either.

Before, well, everything he had lived in the palace with his friends — but even before that he had a more nomadic lifestyle. Being such a way led him to kind of skip out on buying some of the life essentials the two of them needed.

Shadow Milk meanwhile was more fond of making items they needed rather than going out and buying them. Since they moved in he had been exploring his creative side more and more — it made Pure Vanilla’s heart leap with pride at how far his boyfriend had come.

He picked up two handmade mugs the beast had created for them. His own was a beautiful painted light yellow mug with flower vines wrapping around the handle. The inside of it was a black and dark blue checkered pattern. Meanwhile, his beloved's was the perfect other half — mirroring it in every aspect.

He gazed at them fondly, bringing the lighter mug closer to his face to really look at it.

Cute.

He thought as he set it down, shaking his head. He had to refocus! His poor, poor boyfriend was waiting for breakfast!

Pure Vanilla sliced up the rest of the bread they had, quickly realizing that they had indeed procrastinated far too long. It was fine though — it's not like he ever really ate breakfast, it was a meal he knew he could skip and still feel fine.

He toasted the bread in the pan for a few minutes, mentally going over everything they should get while in town. As he did, a blue bird landed on the sill, gazing at him with utmost curiosity.

The bird tapped on the glass of the window, making the poor man jump in surprise. When he focused on what was making the noise his face broke into an excited smile.

“Oh! Hi there, friend!” He greeted the bird, quickly removing some potted plots from the window sill and setting them aside. This was perhaps another issue — their home was slowly being overtaken by all sorts of plants! However… this was kind of his own fault.

Pure Vanilla opened the window, his smile brightening as the little, blue bird hopped on inside and onto his outstretched hand.

“What brings you here, friend? Would you like something to eat?” He asked the bird, bringing it up to his face. “I'm sorry but we don't have much currently and these are for my beloved.. why don't you return tonight?” He asked the bird, watching as it flapped its wings a couple of times, deciding to settle on his shoulder instead.

“Awh, aren't you just adorable?” He asked the bird as he set the toasted bread onto a plate. He listened as the bird started to chirp at him, sometimes even making what could only be described as ‘kissy’ noises.

It must be someone's pet.

He thought as he spread some strawberry marmalade onto the bread, deciding to make one of them into a heart shape — yes he was that kind of guy. In his defense, it was cute! And he loved seeing poor Shadow Milk get flustered over such sweet gestures.

“Mhm.” He agreed with the tweeting bird as he finished up. “Yes, yes you're the cutest little—”

“Who is?” A familiar voice came from the doorway making Pure Vanilla jump in surprise.

Sweetheart! You're up!” He smiled brightly, before biting his inner cheek not to laugh.

Shadow Milk looked like he had crawled out of a grave, to put it lightly. His form was draped with one of their many blankets, trailing behind him as he approached his boyfriend. His gaze focused on the chatty little bird sitting on Pure Vanilla's shoulder.

“I'm almost done with breakfast too! I'm sorry for making you wait.” Pure Vanilla said with that annoyingly pretty smile of his.

“Mn.” The beast replied, not taking his eyes off of the bird. He wasn't jealous over a bird. Not at all. He was better than this!! He had worked through these feelings and he wouldn't stoop so low as to shoo that bird away.

Nope.

,,,

The hands which held his blanket-cloak tightened a little as his gaze seemed to shift into something deadlier.

That's when a pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around him.

“Wh—” he started as he suddenly found his face resting against his boyfriend's chest. He blinked owlishly a few times at the sudden embrace.

Then, Pure Vanilla started to move.

His hands started furiously rubbing his boyfriend over the blanket he was holding, wherever they could reach — much like one would do when trying to dry someone's hair (or dog).

“HEY— STOP IT—” Shadow Milk demanded as his face started to grow hotter at the sudden affection. Even if it wasn't particularly romantic, the feeling of his boyfriend's hands running all over his body was impossible to not get him in a twist!!

Metaphorical steam rose from his face. Now he wished that Pure Vanilla stayed like this — there was no way he could face him now with his face so flustered! Maybe he can ask the bird to strike him down?!

Finally, Pure Vanilla stopped, pulling away slightly. “Sorry sweetheart, I was simply warming up the milk.” He said, with a serious face.

...

“...”

“You are SUCH A — UGH!” Shadow Milk groaned as he buried his face into his hands to hide the growing embarrassment. It didn't help that right after his boyfriend burst into that dumb laugh of his. Dumb, cute laugh he had whenever he made such a horribly bad joke.

“Sorry honey — pft—” he laughed, throwing his head back a little before doubling over. As he did, Shadow Milk lightly smacked the back of his head.

“Your jokes are horrible.” He accused.

“I'm well,,, aware—” Pure Vanilla laughed.

“You dishonor me whenever you make such a joke.” Shadow Milk continued before ruffling his boyfriend's hair out of what could only be described as cute aggression. “Asshole.” He added, helpfully.

“Sorry, sorry—” the other snickered as he straightened up again, clearing his throat.

“—we actually ran out of milk, we need to get that later too. I was going to make us some tea instead! Would you like some?” He asked as he wiped a tear from his face.

“Sure, I'll have whatever you get.” Shadow Milk said, as his gaze shifted to the plate with their horribly sappy breakfast.

One plate.

“Where's your food?” He asked.

“Ah— uhm.” Pure Vanilla cleared his throat. “I ate it?”

“You're asking me if you ate it?“

“...”

Shadow Milk rubbed his face with his hand, holding the bridge of his nose. “I hope you weren't planning on skipping breakfast. Especially today after that long list of chores you told me earlier.”

“...”

“Yeah, that's what I thought. We will share, come on.” He shook his head, taking his boyfriend's chin and tilting it down. It was like facing a big, guilty puppy. Shadow Milk wanted to squeeze him until he burst.

Pure Vanilla was lucky that he was still drowsy from interrupted sleep.

“Okay sweetheart! We will share!” He smiled sheepishly, leaning forward to steal a peck from his boyfriend before scurrying away to make them their tea.

At some point in their little scuffle the little blue bird had flown from his shoulder onto Pure Vanilla's, making itself comfortable there. Shadow Milk supposed it wasn't that bad of a bird if it was on his side.

He moved to sit down at their table, glancing once at the pot of lilies resting next to a work in progress of his — a puppet.

This was their home after all.

He closed his eyes for a few moments before focusing back on his boyfriend. What was the point of going back to bed now when he was already out?

Soon, Pure Vanilla returned with the tea, setting the dark blue and black checkered mug in front of his boyfriend. Inside there was some strong, black tea — perfect for waking up.

“Thank you.”

“Of course, honey.”

Shadow Milk took a sip and instantly exhaled. Sweet caffeine. Sort of.

“I really need this.” He murmured to himself as he drank. His gaze shifted up when he felt a pair of eyes on him. Naturally, Pure Vanilla was gazing at him with that quiet, fond look of his.

“Shut up.” The beast barked.

“I didn't say anything.” He replied simply before taking one of three pieces of bread.

“You said it with your mind. I can tell.” Shadow Milk accused as he took the other piece, leaving only the heart shaped one on the plate.

“Mn.” Pure Vanilla hummed.

The room fell into a comfortable silence afterwards as the two of them ate together. Even the bird on Shadow Milk's shoulders had settled down in this atmosphere.

Looking at it now, it really was a nice morning today. It should be sunny later too… maybe they should wear something lighter?

“Honey, can you do my hair later? You always make it look pretty.” Pure Vanilla asked as he set down his mug.

“Sure, Nilly. And it's your fault.” He answered simply, making his boyfriend laugh a little.

“My fault for what?”

“That i can make it look pretty. It's because of your face.” He shrugged, leaning back on his chair.

“That was a very roundabout way of complimenting me.” Pure Vanilla chuckled, giving him an amused smile as one of his brows arched a little.

“You attacked me earlier, you don't deserve a direct compliment.” He said, squinting a little.

“I was just war—!”

“If you finish that sentence I'll actually move out.”

“...”

“Yeah that's what I thought!“ he huffed, shifting his head to the side.

But it's funny—” came a tiny voice. A tiny voice of Pure Vanilla trying his very best to not burst into laughter again.

God why was his boyfriend so dumb and cute and just— it made Shadow Milk want to shake him. Affectionately shake him.

Shadow Milk reached out for the final piece of their breakfast as he thought about how to best fix his poor boyfriend’s horrible sense of humor.

The room fell into the same comfortable silence again while Shadow Milk looked down at the heart shaped piece of bread.

He tore his heart in half, taking one piece for himself and giving the other to Pure Vanilla who accepted with a warm-hearted smile.

Maybe today won't be that unruly after all.

Chapter Text

Once they returned to their bedroom, Shadow Milk finally dropped his blanket “robe” in favor of stretching his arms upwards. He stretched, almost floating off of the ground, until his back made a satisfying pop making him sigh in relief and slump down.

Meanwhile, Pure Vanilla's eyes were completely locked on the beast for those few moments — especially at seeing how his sleeping shirt ever so slightly lifted up, revealing smooth skin underneath.

But just like that, the moment was over and Pure Vanilla cleared his throat, looking away.

“Sweetheart, let's get dressed and then you can do my hair, okay?” He suggested, already on his way to their dresser.

“Sure.” Shadow Milk agreed with a shrug, eyeing their bed. Their comfortable bed. Comfortable, warm bed.

Why did he agree to this again?

“I'm just so excited to be with everyone again! Oh and I can't wait for our little outing after!” his boyfriend chatted with a warm smile, picking up a set of plain robes he had grown to favor over their time together.

That's why.

Shadow Milk thought as he listened to him chatter on and on with that dumb, pretty smile of his. Every now and then he'd nod his head or make a sound of agreement as he decided to sit down on their bed criss crossed.

Pure Vanilla Cookie gathered up his long blond hair into his hands, deciding that for now he'll tie it up into a low ponytail. He had learned from his mistakes! Long hair gets caught onto stuff very easily.

Slowly, he started to strip his shirt, folding it twice in his hands before tossing it onto the bed next to his boyfriend. His awfully quiet boyfriend.

“Aren't you going to get dressed too?” He asked, tilting his head to the side thus making his ponytail spill over his shoulder.

“I am.” Shadow Milk replied simply as his eyes explored the familiar body in front of him. “I'm just enjoying the show first.” He smirked a little, pointing his chin ever so slightly up.

He was so smug and so dumb.

Pure Vanilla inhaled deeply and exhaled just the same. They had a busy day today, he couldn't jump him now. He'll just have to save it for… later.

“Well, I'm sorry to disappoint but ‘the show' is going to be quite boring today.” He replied, turning his back towards his boyfriend. Mostly for his own sake, he could only look at him in this adorably smug state for so long.

“Booo.” Shadow Milk complained with a smirk, leaning back a little as his eyes now explored his boyfriend's back. The back that he had affectionately decorated the previous night.

“You look like you fought a cat.” He cackled once the robe finally fell over the other's back, shielding his body from Shadow Milk's hungry gaze.

“And whose fault is that, hm?” Pure Vanilla asked, glancing over his shoulder and raising his brow at his mischievous boyfriend. Lord, what should he do with him?

“Come on, I'm already dressed. I don't want to be late.” He continued, taking a seat next to his boyfriend. Shadow Milk took the opportunity to place a hand onto his knee, which was sadly playfully smacked away as soon as it made contact.

“Not now.” Pure Vanilla scolded with an amused smile.

“Booo.” He booed, again.

“If you behave today and if we manage to finish everything on time I suppose we could have an … eventful night.” He teased him a little, making Shadow Milk perk up in an instant — but he was trying to play it cool.

Even if upon making eye contact with the eyes in his hair Pure Vanilla knew exactly just how excited his boyfriend was.

Cute.

He thought again as he waited for the beast to get dressed. He was just going to sit here and do absolutely nothing, yup. He was a very good, not easily distracted boyfriend.

Not even when Shadow Milk undressed.

Or when he caught a peak of the marks he had left on him — it looked like his body had been ravaged by some beast, ironically.

Nope.

Pure Vanilla was perfectly calm. He was only grasping the sheets of their bed so tightly as a hand exercise!!

“Are you just about done eye fucking me?” Shadow Milk suddenly said, making him abruptly stand up.

“HAHA— I NEED TO FIND uhm— MY HAT!” He declared, exiting the room to the sound of his boyfriend's ‘evil’ cackling.

“OH COME ON NILLY! I just said what I saw!! You always told me to try and be more truthful!!” His voice rang out with overjoyed mischief throughout the house making Pure Vanilla's face flush even harder. At the end he went to their bathroom to splash his face with some cold water to calm himself down.

As he gazed at his own blurry reflection in the mirror Pure Vanilla briefly debated canceling everything for today. The thought had passed him just for a moment, okay?! It's not like he'd actually cancel on his friends to spend the day in bed with his boyfriend.

He only did that those two times!!

He was a changed, better man who was perfectly in control of his own desires. He gave himself a little nod as he returned to the bedroom to his now fully dressed boyfriend looking as smug as ever.

“Where's your hat?” He asked, looking at his sharp nails (claws) and then back at his boyfriend.

,,,

“I couldn't find it.” Pure Vanilla laughed nervously, clearing his throat again and shaking his head.

“Anyways—” he started, wanting desperately to change the subject. “You promised to do my hair, honey.” He pointed out as he went over to sit on the edge of their bed, folding his hands politely in his lap.

“Right, right, just change the subject.” Shadow Milk teased, watching the poor man’s face turn scarlet again. Ah, the joys of not feeling impending doom after waking up.

Shadow Milk picked up a small box of hair supplies he had carved for them, placing it into Pure Vanilla's lap while he shuffled over to sit behind him.

He ran his fingers through the soft, golden hair. Every day it reminded him more and more of the sun.. as if it was glowing. Gently he removed the hairband from his hair, watching the blond strands fall like a beautiful waterfall of light.

“Comb.” He demanded, putting one of his hands out while the other continued to run through that incredibly soft hair he loved.

The wooden comb was soon pressed into his palm, making his eyes focus. He was a creative soul at heart — during his journey of healing he had refound his passion for art in many forms. One of them being making pretty hairstyles for his beloved.

He ran his comb in fluid motions while thinking about what he could do today. They were going to be incredibly busy so a relaxed style would make him feel comfortable. Yet, rushing around was bound to mess it up.

Hm.

Shadow Milk handed the comb back to Pure Vanilla, before starting to section out his hair into six sections. He made two long braids with careful precision — having to start from the beginning only once when the braid wasn't up to his standards.

The last thing he needed was something to pin them with..

“I'll be right back.” He said, jumping up and rushing back to the kitchen. There, he picked up a white lily flower from its pot, turning it a couple of times in his hand. He wasn't particularly fond of the flower, for obvious reasons, but he knew that Pure Vanilla loved them.

Carefully, he infused the flower with his magic as he walked back. By the time he got there the flower was perfectly crystalized. He gave it another spin on its stem, making sure it was sharp enough to hold the others smooth hair but not too sharp as to hurt him.

“Ohh what's that?” Pure Vanilla asked, lifting his head a little to try and peak at what the beast was holding.

“Just a little trinket I made, now don't move.” He told him as he gathered up the two braids again. He pinned them together at the back of Pure Vanilla's head, making an elegant yet practical hairstyle for the day.

Perfect.

“I'm done.” He said, smiling proudly as he watched his boyfriend scurry off to look at himself in the mirror.

“OH!! Shadow Milk, this is gorgeous!!” Pure Vanilla chirped as he looked at his hair, smiling especially brightly at the beautiful pin his boyfriend had made him.

“Pfsh, it's nothing.” He dismissed him while still looking as prideful and smug as ever. Hehe.

Pure Vanilla rushed right back, taking the beast's hands into his own and giving them a squeeze. His blue yellow eyes sparkled like a thousand stars at his beloved. “It's truly wonderful.” He said sincerely, making him flush.

“Okay, I get it. Shut u— mn…” his words were cut off by a long, sweet kiss on the lips. The kind where you couldn't help but smile into it.

They kissed for a little while — neither letting the other pull away. It would've perhaps escalated if a certain blue bird didn't make its presence known again by making kissy noises at them.

Pure Vanilla turned his head to look at it, only for a hand on his cheek to pull him down again.

“Wait—” he said, pulling back a little while laughing — he looked a little sheepish facing his unamused boyfriend. “—if we continue we will never leave the house.”

“I don't see an issue with that.”

Shadow Milk.”

“Okay, okay.“ he sighed dramatically, letting his head hang back for a few moments as he cursed the little bird in his head.

If he wasn't actively trying to be nice he'd have turned that bird into lunch and a pillow by now. Pest.

“Sweetheart let me do your hair too!” Pure Vanilla smile making the other tense up. Maybe that wasn't the best idea while he was actively having murderous thoughts about a bird—

Before he could voice his complaint a pair of familiar hands sank into the abyss that was his kind-of-alive hair.

It was like Pure Vanilla knew him inside and out — with a couple of well placed touches and scratches Shadow Milk felt himself and his hair instantly deflate.

“Oh, it's more lively than usual!” Pure Vanilla laughed as he watched the strands of hair affectionately wrap up around his arms while many eyes focused fully on him and his stupid, pretty smile.

While Shadow Milk saw styling hair as a form of an art, to Pure Vanilla… it was more like taming some sort of creature. And he loved every second of it.

He leaned down, nuzzling his face into the moving hair, which moved against his cheek as if trying to kiss him. Meanwhile his hand skillfully reached the nape of his beloved's neck, scratching him there. He listened carefully and… there it was — deep rumbles coming from the beast in front of him as his hair fell limp with relaxation.

Now he could actually work!

It didn't take Pure Vanilla even a second to decide what to do with Shadow Milk's hair as he braided it into one long side braid — almost matching his own hairstyle but not quite!

It looked absolutely adorable on his—

“Honey, did you fall asleep??” He gasped as he leaned over to look at his boyfriend’s relaxed expression and closed eyes.

“,,nooo…” he murmured, blinking drowsily.

Cute, cute, cute!!

Pure Vanilla squealed in his mind. He gave his forehead a peck before standing up and bringing poor Shadow Milk up as well.

“Come on now! If we don't head out now we won't make it in time!” He smiled brightly, taking his staff that rested against the doorway of their room.

“You're forgetting two things.” Shadow Milk pointed out with a yawn.

“Two things??“

“Your hat.”

“Ah—” he smiled sheepishly, whoops.

“Which I'm guessing is still lost.”

“Sure is, haha…” he laughed nervously as his boyfriend walked away to their nightstand. There, on a silk pillow laid to shimmering gems, right next to each other.

Their souljams.

“If you went out without this, your friends would accuse me of trying to steal it, again.” Shadow Milk said as he gently picked up his beloved's souljam, watching it shine underneath his touch. Its light reflected in his blue eyes as he gazed at it with an indescribable feeling.

Shame, desire, passion, purpose, remorse…

His gaze turned towards Pure Vanilla whose face was starting to flush as his body gave the subtlest of twitches every time his fingers even moved a microscopic amount.

Love.

“Oh please, I thought you'd get used to this feeling by now!” Shadow Milk laughed, running his finger over his soul jam — watching his poor boyfriend yelp a little.

“You know that I can't! You can't— mn.. either!” he shot back, still feeling very, very flustered as his beloved fastened his souljam against his robe.

“One day we should wear each other's souljams. That will really freak people out.” Shadow Milk commented with a mischievous smile, giving the middle one last playful tap with the tip of his claw before returning to get his own.

“This is bullying…” Pure Vanilla whined a little.

“No, that was revenge for waking me up so early and for stopping earlier.” He shrugged, referring to their kissing.

He patted his boyfriend's red cheek a couple of times before taking his free hand.

“C'mon, your friends are waiting.” He said, not bothering to hide his annoyance. But he woul survive, for Pure Vanilla's sake.

With such a busy day, it's not like they will spend too long there anyway! He thought as they exited their little house at the very edge of the Vanilla Kingdom.

Chapter Text

The air outside had that morning chill to it, the kind that would make one shudder when they first left their warm bed. The grass and plants around them were still covered in dew while the sky was streaked with some of the last lines of deep orange. One thing was for certain…

It was way too fucking early.

Shadow Milk thought as he squinted at the sunlight coming from the horizon. He was still working on the clock he wanted to put in their bedroom — now he was more motivated than ever to finish it. If he knew just how early it was he'd have never agreed to this!

“Ah! Nothing better than the morning air, isn't there, honey?” Pure Vanilla said with a smile as he took a deep inhale and exhaled.

He should've cursed him to fall back asleep when he had the chance.

“You can hear the sounds of birds so clearly! It's such a beautiful thing waking up with nature like this.” Pure Vanilla continued.

A cold breeze blew against poor Shadow Milk making him shudder. Yup, the worst. And no amount of dumb, pretty smiles was going to fix this.

Then in a blink he felt something warm and heavy land on his shoulders. He looked up at his boyfriend who had discarded his outer robe and draped it over his shoulders — it felt like a comforting hug.

“You looked a little cold.” Pure Vanilla pointed out, reaching out to cup the beast's cheek with his hand. He ran his thumb over his cheekbone, rubbing gentle circles against the smooth skin.

“I'm not.” Shadow Milk lied, instinctively tilting his head to the side against his beloved's warm hand. If he wasn't being stubborn and a hardass he'd have purred.

“Oh… then I guess I'll take this back—” he shrugged, reaching out to take the robe only for his boyfriend to let out a little hiss. He smacked his hand away, glaring while scrunching up the robe closer to his chest.

“It's mine, back off.” He snapped, squinting a little before hiding his face within his boyfriend's robe.

It still had Pure Vanilla’s scent.

He took a deep inhale, eyes fluttering closed. He should steal his clothes more often — this brought him a deep sense of comfort.

“Why are we going so early anyway?” Shadow Milk asked, successfully made docile by such a small act of affection. Naturally, Pure Vanilla had planned this all along, he knew already that his boyfriend liked stealing his clothes and pillows.

And him looking cute in his clothes was only a bonus!

“I wanted to check up on the sheep first and the walk to the city is a long one… I thought that if we left early we wouldn't have to rush!” He explained to the other with a warm smile.

Holding his staff with one hand and the beast’s hand with the other he made his way towards the sheep pen.

Inside, there was a decently sized herd of sheep — all deeply loved and taken care of by the two men. But, between the two of them the herd had a definite favorite.

Awh.. look they're sleeping.” Pure Vanilla whispered, ignoring the little glare he got from Shadow Milk — of course they were sleeping, the sun had just risen a bit ago! They should be sleeping too!!

He let go of Pure Vanilla's hand, stretching once before channeling his magic to float off of the ground. Very carefully he passed the fence, making sure to be as quiet as possible as he counted all the sheep in their herd.

By the time he had finished he turned to see his boyfriend resting against the fence, watching him with a big, dopey smile. How could he not? Shadow Milk always looked so graceful whenever he floated like that, it was nearly impossible to not get hypnotized by his blue hair moving in the air!

Speaking of his hair…

“Sweetheart, you're sparkling.” Pure Vanilla whispered in awe, watching the sun reflect off of the blue parts of his hair. He couldn't see it very well from this distance but it looked like he had a galaxy nestled in between his ocean blue locks.

“Shut up.” Shadow Milk answered, his face turning a little flush. “More importantly—” he cleared his throat. “—Pudding needs her wool sheared soon. We should do that tomorrow. There's a few others too but she's the most severe case.” He whispered to his boyfriend as he floated over to him until their noses were almost touching.

“We can get some new sheers in town!” Pure Vanilla offered hopefully, his gaze dropping once to the pair of familiar, soft lips before sliding back up to get lost in beautiful, blue eyes.

“Sure, add it to the list. I'll open the gate for them.” Shadow Milk replied, reaching up to grab Pure Vanilla's chin, giving it a little shake. Dumb, pretty man.

He let go before the other could lean forward for a kiss, floating await with a mischievous grin much to his boyfriend’s disappointment. As Shadow Milk quietly opened the gate he felt something tug at the ends of his robes. He looked down, a warm smile breaking over his face at the sight of an awake baby sheep.

Hi, Jelly..” he whispered to her, floating down a little to give her an affectionate scratch behind her ear. She let out a (loud) baa at him, nuzzling her snout against his hand.

“Shh! We don't want to wake up your mama and the rest, hm? C'mon let's get you back to her” He snickered quietly, petting her soft wool — scooping her into his arms a few moments later.

The person the sheep favored was indeed him.

That much was clear by how much they craved his attention. Pure Vanilla adored seeing the scenes such as this one play out in their daily lives. More than once had he found his boyfriend sleeping with the sheep, deeply nestled into their wool.

He watched with an adoring gaze as he breathed a soft, dreamy sigh. How was he so lucky?

It wasn't luck. It was hard work on both of their parts. It had been a long, long journey for them to come to where they were now. Back then he'd have never thought that the sight of Shadow Milk cradling a baby sheep in his arms while bringing it to its mother would bring such joy to his heart to the point he felt like it could leap from his chest at any moment.

“Earth to Nilly!!” Shadow Milk called, waving a hand in front of his absolutely love struck boyfriend.

I love you.” Pure Vanilla replied, taking his wrist. He gave it a little squeeze as his thumb felt around for the beast's pulse. Once he had found it, he pulled him forward, finally getting his kiss. As they kissed Pure Vanilla couldn't help but smile against familiar lips as he felt his poor boyfriend's heartbeat spike up over and over again.

He refused to let him go for a few long minutes, enjoying the cold morning breeze mixed with their shared hot breaths. He had been about to deepen the kiss, pressing the tip of his tongue ever so slightly against the beast's bottom lip when the other pulled away fully.

Nilly.” He scolded. “You know that I'd love nothing more than to continue but I did not get up at this ungodly time just for you to end up kissing me in the cold.” He pointed out, a mischievous grin dancing on the corner of his lips as his boyfriend grew instantly flustered.

Uhm— yes! True! We should get going!” Pure Vanilla squeaked out, clearing his throat.

Now did Shadow Milk want to return to their bed and sleep the rest of the day (among other things)? Yes. Absolutely. He desired nothing more.

However.

Seeing Pure Vanilla grow so flustered was worth the sacrifice.

He landed back on the ground quietly, taking his hand once again. Finally, hand in hand, the two of them left their little cottage at the edge of the kingdom behind for the day.

The longer they walked the more bored Shadow Milk grew. One could only look at trees and listen to the birds for so long before growing annoyed — unless you were his beloved naturally.

“Such a wonderful walk, isn't it sweetheart?” Pure Vanilla chatted with a big smile as he listened to the chirping birds. The grip on Shadow Milk's hand had grown far firmer than it was previously. While at home and in their own garden he could get around effortlessly despite his poor vision, here in the “wild” he relied some on his staff and boyfriend to guide him.

“Mhm.” Shadow Milk hummed in affirmation… very unenthusiastic affirmation. He was glad that they lived so far away from civilization, unless it came to —

“Vine.” He quickly warned Pure Vanilla, slowing down their steps so the other could get over it without issue.

Anyways — it was totally boring to just wander aimlessly until you reached the first signs of civilization!!

Mn.

Shadow Milk suddenly wrung out his hand from the other's hold — instantly alarming him. “Shadow Milk?” Pure Vanilla asked as he turned his head to where his boyfriend had been standing.

Then, a warm pair of arms wrapped loosely around his neck, making him let out a breathless laugh.

“Just what are you doing?” He asked with an amused smile as he felt the beast nestle his head against his.

“Seeing the world from a different perspective. Don't mind me.” Shadow Milk answered while floating behind the blond man, idly kicking his legs in the air.

“I see. And how is it up here?” He asked as he finally continued to walk.

“Warmer. Far less boring too.” Shadow Milk answered while his piercing blue eyes gazed at his beloved’s face up close, idly counting his lashes. Pure Vanilla wasn't about to complain either. The weight on his shoulders felt warm and comforting… and the sound of his boyfriend's soft breathing near his ear — well that made him feel many ways.

“Vine on the left.” Shadow Milk advised, making Pure Vanilla steer a little to the right instead.

“Any other reason why you've decided to hang onto me? Perhaps laziness?” He called out playfully, tilting his head to the side to nuzzle their cheeks together.

“Sure. But also…” Shadow Milk started, shifting closer to his ear. There he let his hot breath brush against the earlobe for a long few seconds before finally speaking up again in a whisper. “...—doing this is bound to be.. entertaining~”

Pure Vanilla tripped on his own feet, being only saved by his boyfriend's quick thinking to hoist him up before he fell.

“Shit sorry—” Shadow Milk apologized as he slowly lowered Pure Vanilla to the ground. He couldn't make him stand up straight but he could certainly make his landing far softer. His head turned back to look at the path they had been taking. “—wait that was a clearing, what did you trip ove-”

Suddenly Shadow Milk was spun around, being pinned against the soft grass. Before he could register what was happening a hot pair of lips pulled him into a feverish, hungry kiss. Such a kiss that he didn't have a moment to breathe, especially not when Pure Vanilla finally made good on his earlier intentions — taking his sweet time to explore the poor beast's mouth with his tongue.

By the time he had pulled for air his poor boyfriend looked incredibly dazed. His poor, poor lips ever so slightly bruised and glossy from the intense kiss.

This undoing is of your own making, love.” He breathed, eyeing him with a gaze that was incredibly familiar to Shadow Milk — hungry, heated gaze. “Why don't you take some responsibility, hm?” He continued, reaching up his hand to drum his fingers against the beast's souljam, making it glow with each tap.

He felt Shadow Milk squirm behind him, expression severe — he was trying to hold back. “Tsk.” He scoffed as he kissed him again only to slowly move his lips to his chin and jaw—

Kissy noises.

Pure Vanilla suddenly pulled away, as a bird landed right on the top of his head, making him blink. “You followed us?” He asked, sitting up straight and removing his hand from the other's souljam to wipe his mouth with the back of his hand.

Shadow Milk was going to kill that fucking bird.

Love..“ he tried getting his attention again, reaching out his hand to press against his waist, claws gently digging into the clothed flesh. Pure Vanilla instantly snapped right back down — a critical success!!

Then, noises of people chattering could be heard in the woods. They were near their destination anyway, it wouldn't be unusual for people to come in and wander on a pleasant walk.

Pure Vanilla perked up, pulling away again with a sheepish smile. “Tonight.” He promised his boyfriend sheepishly, giving his unamused face a quick peck before standing up.

Scratch that, Shadow Milk was going to kill everyone until it was just the two of them left.

He took the hand that was offered by the very apologetic man, letting himself get pulled up. “You are making up for that.” He told him firmly as he brushed himself off.

“Yes!! I promise I'll make up for it!” Pure Vanilla apologized again, gazing at him with those irresistible puppy dog eyes.

“Shush, let's go.” He waved his hand while plotting on how perhaps to try and destroy the world again.

They walked hand in hand for but a couple of minutes more before finally arriving at their destination — The Vanilla Kingdom. Streets bustling with people opening up their shops, running errands, students rushing to the academy.

In Shadow Milk's opinion this might be the worst day ever.

He gave that damn bird a deathly, pointed glare.

Chapter Text

Shadow Milk squinted his eyes a little as they walked deeper into the kingdom. The streets were bustling with early risers preparing to start the day. Which was fine — he couldn't judge them too much considering his beloved was also the kind finger up at this ungodly hour.

But what did irk at him a little was a group of students staring at him from a distance. They were clearly somewhere in their early teens, the worst kind of age if you were to ask him — even if he had been made as a full adult.

They walked past the students nonchalantly, albeit he kept his ears open as they did. His pointed ear gave a little twitch.

“That must be him!! The beast of deceit!!” One youth whispered frantically to their classmates.

“No way! Pure Vanilla would never associate with him!” the other argued.

The group paused and glanced at the pair strolling again.

“It's definitely him!! I bet he cursed Pure Vanilla — there's no way-”

Crack.

Shadow Milk's head spun 180° with a horrendous noise. His blue eyes slit as he stared at the now terrified — he watched with delight as they trembled under his uncanny stare.

Scaring teens was probably one of his favorite pastime activities. It's just something fun!! It's not like he's hurting anyone!

As his lips parted to say something he felt a hand on his shoulder. Suddenly, his vision was blocked by white cloth.

“I would appreciate it if you didn't badmouth my boyfriend. He might be a little peculiar but he has come a long way — I assure you he did not curse me.” Came the stern voice of Pure Vanilla who stood in front of him. Usually, he was far more gentle spoken but.. he couldn't possibly tolerate someone saying such stuff — no matter how old they were.

He watched the students scatter with apologies before sighing and turning to face the beat again. He cupped his face with his hands, gently turning his head until it was back to its original place.

“You shouldn't do that—”

“Yeah I know, blah blah keeping peace a—”

“—I get so worried for your head!!” Pure Vanilla frowned deeply, unfazed by his boyfriend's dumbfounded expression while he took his chin. He made Shadow Milk look up, using his free hand to slide the rough tips of his fingers across his neck. Naturally, the beast almost jumped at the touch, flushing.

They were in public public!!

“It's fiNE—” his voice crackled, gently smacking the other's hands away from his neck and chin. He grabbed one of them, tugging Pure Vanilla along until they were in a less crowded area.

When he turned back to look at his boyfriend's dumb, pretty face he was met with a big, smug smile. Pure Vanilla knew exactly he was doing — that- ugh!! He wanted to tear him apart with his claws.

“We are going to meet everyone at the Crow’s Nest Inn by the way! I wonder if they're there already.” Pure Vanilla chatted as he interlocked their fingers, swinging their arms back and forth while they walked.

“Mhm.” Shadow Milk hummed, far too focused on their earlier interaction to even think about how he'd have to sit in a room filled with, frankly, people who really didn't like him that much.

Hollyberry was probably the only one that he semi liked being around with — “like” being used loosely. He enjoyed their shared company over drinks, it was marvelously fun to later make Eternal Sugar annoyed at him for spending time with her other half.

The rest? Eh…

The two of them entered the Crow’s Nest Inn after a short walk. The inside was dimly lit with only the sunlight from the outside filtering in through drape covered windows. Being so early, they were actually some of the first customers to arrive in the inn — most of the guests were people who already had their rooms booked and were just heading down for breakfast.

Shadow Milk watched as his boyfriend talked to the staff — something about a reserved table and if they could add another chair to it. He really did butt into his plans, didn't he? Maybe he should've stayed in bed after all..

“Come, sweetheart!” Pure Vanilla chirped, waving his boyfriend over to a big, round table at the edge of the room. He was carrying a chair with him too — making Shadow Milk's gaze briefly drop onto his strong arms. How could he not be strong when he carried that golden staff everywhere with himself?

Shadow Milk should've fought harder to keep them in the woods.

The beast sat down on the chair his boyfriend had set down, noticing instantly how much closer they were compared to everyone else. If they wanted to they could definitely space everyone out equally but — it seemed like Pure Vanilla was set on sitting close together. Of course he didn't mind, they were both a little clingy after all.

“It seems like we are the first to arrive after all.” Pure Vanilla said thoughtfully as his hand shifted to rest on Shadow Milk's leg. He moved it up and down in smooth motions whilst talking — not that the beast was doing much listening.

“Mhm.” He hummed in agreement, feeling goosebumps rise on the back of his neck.

“Something on your mind, honey?” Pure Vanilla asked, batting his long white lashes at Shadow Milk a couple of times. He stopped his hand, right where the beast's thighs were.

“Thinking about what I should get to drink—”

“Oh!! They have wonderful homebrews!”

“—and about how if you continue doing this, the moon might rise early today.” He deadpanned, pointing at Pure Vanilla’s sneaky hand.

,,,

“Haha,, uhm— “ he coughed, looking away with scarlet cheeks — yet he didn't remove his hand from his boyfriend's leg.

Not until Shadow Milk stood up, gazing down at him with sparks of mischief.

Oh no.

“Anyways, I'm going to go get us some drinks. You sit here with your pretty little head and wait for your friends.” He hummed, reaching down to pat his boyfriend's cheek a couple of times.

And then he was off — on a quest to find drinks that were equally alcoholic as they were light. They couldn't get drunk in the morning, obviously but maybe a little sprinkle of alcohol will convince a certain blond to leave early and go back into their warm bed. Yes!! Absolutely fool proof!! But also he needed to find something that actually tasted good..

Yes, a truly devious, fool proof plan indeed.

A truly devious plan Pure Vanilla was well aware of. How could he not be? He knew his mischievous boyfriend far too well — he was well prepared to handle his drink no matter what Shadow Milk brought back. Albeit, he had a feeling..

Just then, a sound came from across the table that made him focus on the spot. Through the dim lighting he could recognize the tall figure of his friend.

“Dark Cacao!” He greeted with a big smile, standing up to go ahead and greet the other. He grasped Dark Cacao’s hand firmly before pulling him into a short hug. “Have your travels been well?” He asked, looking as the usually stern man's eyes grew soft.

“Pure Vanilla.” He greeted, letting out a small breath. “Yes, they were quite alright. The journey has been far more peaceful now than a few decades ago.” He answered. Pure Vanilla felt the other squeeze him a little tighter for a moment longer before pulling away.

“Have the others arrived yet?” Dark Cacao asked as he shrugged off his thick coat, draping it over the chair across from Pure Vanilla.

“Not yet! It's just us three for now!” He smiled as he sat down as well, glancing briefly to see if he could spot his boyfriend despite his vision — but alas, Shadow Milk had disappeared into the crowd.

“Three?” Dark Cacao asked in mild surprise. Pure Vanilla watched with amusement as a flash of unbelievably shiny gold appeared behind his dear friend.

REJOICE! For my radiance has arrived!” Golden Cheese laughed, smiling brightly at her friends. She took a moment to hug each of them — even ruffling Pure Vanilla's hair a little much to his internal dismay.

“Golden Cheese! You look as wonderful as ever!” Pure Vanilla complimented her. He could basically see her preen and puff up her feathers at the praise.

“Of course, I take great care of my beauty!” She boasted as she took a seat next to Dark Cacao.

Soon after, Hollyberry and White Lily came in together. The two of them were having a conversation that Pure Vanilla couldn't quite make out from the noises around himself — but when he made eye contact with White Lily he felt himself grow softer for his oldest and best friend.

“White Lily, Hollyberry!” He smiled ear to ear at the two. “Pure Vanilla!” Hollyberry greeted, walking over to give him a good pat on the back which almost made him stumble. No matter how strong he was he could never compare to her. “Tsk, is your boyfriend not feeding you well?” She joked.

“He is! Don't worry!” Pure Vanilla laughed, smiling fondly at her. His gaze slid over to White Lily who was looking at him with gentle, kind eyes.

“Pure Vanilla, it's good to see you!” She said, as he pulled her into a tight hug. “You too! I've missed you!” He answered as he moved to take his seat. “Has everything been well in the Fairy Kingdom?" He asked her, tilting his head to the side a little.

“Quite! I'm still getting used to some of my duties but everyone has been helpful.” She answered him.

Seeing all his friends at one place again filled his heart with a deep ache of nostalgia and a deep fondness for all his friends.

White Lily settled on his other side while Hollyberry sat next to Dark Cacao. Now the only free spot was the extra chair closest to himself. Dark Cacao seemed to be the first one to notice the fact as he gestures towards the spot with his head.

“Did they give us an extra se—”

NooOoOoPe~!” came a joyfully annoying voice from the darkness. Shadow Milk emerged with a shit eating grin while carrying two glasses. One was a pretty, blueberry milkshake with whipped cream and a strawberry on top while the other held some sort of a milky frappe with streaks of some sort of syrup.

He set down the blueberry milkshake in front of Pure Vanilla.

“I got you this my darling!~ I just know how much you love the color blue.” he smiled a big, toothy grin as he took a seat— right on his boyfriend's lap.

His boyfriend who was glowing with happiness at such an adorable set of drinks.

Yes, maybe he had foiled his own plans when he saw this on the menu. Maybe it was more important seeing Pure Vanilla get happy like this than going home early. Just maybe.

Anyways.

Shadow Milk kicked his legs onto the empty chair next to them as he shifted a little in the all too familiar lap of his boyfriend. He picked up his own frappe, giving it a long sip while looking at each person at the table. Notably, Dark Cacao seemed more annoyed than anyone else — most have grown used to his antics over time.

“This is so good!!” Pure Vanilla declared as he pulled the glass away from his mouth, one arm securely wrapping around Shadow Milk's waist.

“Of course it is, I picked it.” He replied smugly. His clawed thumb reached over to Pure Vanilla’s lips, wiping off some leftover whipped cream from its corner. He brought said thumb to his mouth, cleaning it off with his tongue while staring at his boyfriend. His blue eyes shined with mischief as he watched Pure Vanilla's gaze fall to his lips, long white lashes fluttering in an all too familiar way.

Then, a screech of a chair rang through the Inn.

“I'll go and get everyone else something to drink.” Dark Cacao said, giving a hard stare at Shadow milk before leaving.

Ha! Loser.

Shadow Milk thought smugly as he leaned back against his boyfriend, listening to him talk with White Lily about some fairy business — he wasn't paying much attention honestly. He was far more interested in how his hair slithered around his boyfriend. Strands curled up around his biceps, some ventured down and settled around his waist but most hung loosely from around his neck — all eyes intensely on him.

Shadow Milk turned his head to the bar where he saw Dark Cacao hold the bridge of his nose — looking more than a little pissed off.

Oh this will be entertaining!~

Maybe coming here was a good idea after all

Okay this was less entertaining than he had hoped for.

Shadow Milk listened idly to the chatter of the ancients, sipping on his drink every now and then. It was far more interesting to him to play with his boyfriend's hair than to add to the conversation — it's not like he had any commentary about it anyway. His clawed finger was currently twirling the long strand of hair he had left at the front of Pure Vanilla's pretty face, making it curl up at the ends.

Boring.

And then, like his wishes had been heard by the greater forces of the universe, Dark Cacao returned with a round of drinks for everyone.

“Mhm.. it's a tough decision — perhaps I should visit the fairy Kingdom soon?” Pure Vanilla chatted with White Lily until his attention was grabbed by a glass being put in front of him. He gave a little blink before looking up at his old friend who was handing out a round of drinks to everyone — aside from Shadow Milk.

“Ah— thank you friend!” He smiled kindly, looking down at the glass of what he could only assume was some sort of berry-chocolate juice.

“But I already have my blueberry milkshake, I don't know if I can finish both…“ he laughed sheepishly, giving a little apologetic bow of his head towards Dark Cacao who.. didn't answer.

“Oh it's okay, my Nilly!~ We can share the drink!” Suddenly came the joyful voice of Shadow Milk next to his ear. He turned to look at him, smiling brightly.

“True! Together we can certain—”

“I got that for you, not for him.” Dark Cacao grunted as he took his seat.

“Oh so I'm not allowed to help my boyfriend?” Shadow Milk commented, looking down at his sharp nails — as if looking up at Dark Cacao was a bothersome task.

“...”

Yup, that's what he thought.

“Anyways—” Shadow Milk started before his conflict solving boyfriend could try to mediate “—about the Fairy Kingdom.” He turned to White Lily who had been in a conversation with Golden Cheese. Her warm smile turned a little more polite as she looked at him. The two of them had quite the… history — but they did have something in common. They both cared deeply for Pure Vanilla and, more importantly to Shadow Milk, he knew that she wouldn't try anything to separate them.

Their… well it wasn't quite a friendship — came a long way through the years.

“I could send Black Sapphire to help out in organizing. He's as good at solving conflict as he is in making it. I've also heard through the grapevine that he and Silverbell have been getting along.” He offered White Lily who tilted her head as if deep in thought.

“That might actually work! The people have been feeling a little overworked from rebuilding some of the collapsed buildings — if Black Sapphire could put on something to entertain them—“ she talked, nodding every now and then to herself.

“Oh!! That would be amazing! Sweetheart, maybe you guys could make a play! You're very talented in such stuff after all.” Pure Vanilla chirped, smiling ear to ear. His knee started to bounce a little in excitement, making Shadow Milk go up and down on his lap too — the other was naturally unbothered. Not only was he used to this but he was far too deep into feeling smug to notice.

“If there's a play by Shadow Milk, you should count me in to come and watch!! The jester always puts on a good show.” Hollyberry laughed as she put down her pint.

“My radiance would naturally come too, I've been hearing enough buzz about it! I must see it for myself.” Golden Cheese laughed, playing her arm around White Lily’s neck who gave her a glance and a smile.

“Yeah, yeah— I guess we could make something entertaining.” Shadow Milk said, raising his chin a little as the air of smugness and pride surrounded him. He had a few times done children's plays in the Hollyberry Kingdom — he makes so many puppets and dolls it'd have been a shame for them not to see the light of day. Plus making sets was just as fun!

“Maybe you could get some actors from the Fairy Kingdom! I'm sure that the people who aren't able to help out in construction would love to help boost morale!” Pure Vanilla added with an excited smile. His head tilted to the side a little before moving forward to nuzzle his face into his boyfriend's neck affectionately. It took him all his will power not to bite down on it out of cute affection. He just wanted to shake Shadow Milk and squeeze his cheeks and —

“Is it truly a good idea for the beast who had been imprisoned there to return with a show?” Said Dark Cacao suddenly. “Your citizens might not see this as kindly as you do.”

Shadow Milk's expression briefly soured at the comment. Not because it was insulting but because it held so much ugly truth in it. He hated it when the other was correct.

“Hm.. honey, maybe you could shapeshift into someone else then?” Pure Vanilla pointed out, his gaze fully locked in on Shadow Milk. He knew his boyfriend like no one else ever did or will — he knew how much such simple words could upset him. What was worse was that he'd never let his hurt show — instead acting out aggressively in response. The only person the beast let his true, sincere emotions show was Pure Vanilla.

The two of them made eye contact for a moment and it was like a million words were said at once.

Don't worry, I got you.

Thank you.

“Yes! That's true!” Shadow Milk declared loudly, grinning ear to ear. In an instant his form changed to his favorite disguise to take.

A slightly taller, breathtaking woman with long white hair and a beautiful, skillfully made dress was now sitting on Pure Vanilla's lap. She had the exact smug expression as Shadow Milk had had moments ago.

It was Lady in Azure.

“Oh!!! Yes!!!” Pure Vanilla chirped, smiling ear to ear like a fool in love that he was. It didn't take him long back then to realize that no matter what form Shadow Milk took not only would he still love him no matter what but … he'd also still be attracted to him in other ways too. The arm around her waist tightened just a tiny bit.

“See big guy? Problem solved!” She laughed at Dark Cacao who was again keeping quiet. The arm that she had kept wrapped around her boyfriend’s neck suddenly pulled him closer to her body — his face was now resting right where her cleavage showed a little.

Poor Pure Vanilla felt himself grow scarlet in moments notice. He glanced up at Lady in Azure for a moment but it was short lived. She was already petting the back of his hair while purposely pressing his face riiiight at The Spot.

“Then it's settled. I'll tell my people that there's a theater group from the Vanilla Kingdom who wishes to help with morale.” White Lily said, giving the beast a brief, genuinely thankful look.

“Just send me a letter as soon as you get a list of people who wouldn't want to participate and leave it all to me!~” she grinned at her while petting the back of her poor, dying, boyfriend's head.

“I still think this is a bad idea—” came a deep voice from across from them. Before either Lady in Azure or Pure Vanilla could answer, Hollyberry cut in.

“Shadow Milk has done a lot of work — just like the rest! If we don't give them a chance to make good on their past, are we really any better? Especially the ones who truly want to change” Hollyberry butted in. Lady in Azure had heard from Eternal Sugar how close they had become — they were close before too but now Eternal Sugar was actively trying to change for the better.

Much like Shadow Milk did.

Lady in Azure stared quietly at Hollyberry who continued to debate with Dark Cacao about the ethics of her own kind. Sometimes, she'd get a surreal feeling just like this — seeing an ancient hero who wasn't Pure Vanilla come to her defense always felt strange.

It actually warmed her heart and made it tremble all at once.

A quiet whine brought her out of her thoughts. It was just quiet enough so that only she could hear him. Her gaze slid down to her chest where she met her boyfriend's eyes peering up.

Yeah, Pure Vanilla was absolutely dying right now. He didn't even hear what everyone was talking about from the moment his beautiful partner pulled him against her chest. The building up tension throughout the morning wasn't helping either.

Just how will he survive today?? He desperately needed her to switch back to her real form — like this she was far too powerful!

Sweetheart..” he practically begged in a pathetic little whisper.

Lady in Azure could have eaten him alive at this very moment.

In a poof of smoke, Shadow Milk returned to his original form. Sure, he could've continued to torment his beloved but it's not like they could do much in such a public space. Maybe if they were to go out in the back..

Pure Vanilla deflated the moment his face was met with a familiar crook of a shoulder instead of an equally familiar chest. He nuzzled his face at the spot, taking in long, drawn out breaths — had Shadow Milk used his soap again? After a few moments of this Pure Vanilla finally sat up straight again.

Just like that the moment of entertainment was gone and Shadow Milk started to grow bored again. He tried to think about what he could make the play about — but for such things he really did need peace and quiet. And a bustling inn was far from peace and quiet.

His bored eyes slid around the room as he tried to find something to do that wasn't sipping on his vanilla frappe. His gaze finally landed on his boyfriend who had been chatting to Golden Cheese about whatever.

Shadow Milk's eyes flashed with mischief as he looked at the exposed part of the back of his neck. He could see the lightest peak of a birthmark Pure Vanilla had that matched the one on his forehead. He couldn't touch it outright lest he spoiled his fun too quickly but…

The beast's hair which had been mostly shifting and curling around Pure Vanilla's arms and waist shifted again. A couple of strands snaked their way up his back, making his poor boyfriend stumble on his words with a little laugh.

,,,

Hehehe.

Shadow Milk continued to act bored as the strands of his hair slipped underneath his boyfriend's collar. He even ignored the brief look he got from Pure Vanilla in favor of staring at the ceiling. His hair meanwhile moved up and down Pure Vanilla's spine making the other subtly tremble — something only the beast could feel due to literally being pressed against him.

He inspected his claws casually while his hair shifted and expanded to other places. Tentacles of his hair went down, licking up against Pure Vanilla's waist and chest. Funnily enough despite his actions Shadow Milk had no intentions to arouse his boyfriend this time, despite what he was currently doing.

No, no, no. He had something far greater in mind.

Finally, Pure Vanilla burst into laughter for a moment, quickly covering his mouth while trembling. “I'm sorry,, I— pftdon't know what's coming over me—” he squeaked, voice strained from trying not to laugh.

By now his body was squirming underneath a very smug yet oblivious looking beast. Ah, was there any greater joy than tormenting one's beloved in such a way? Shadow Milk didn't think so.

He'd have continued playfully messing with Pure Vanilla if there wasn't a sound of a pint being set down not so gently onto the table.

“Will you stop tormenting Pure Vanilla, beast?” Dark Cacaos said, glaring at Shadow Milk.

“Ugh— can't you see that I'm not doing anything? My hands are right here!” He answered, waving his hands as “proof”.

“You're clearly doing something!” Dark Cacao accused him. Shadow Milk opened his mouth to continue arguing when Pure Vanilla, having regained his breath, spoke up.

“Dark Cacao, why do you keep attacking Shadow Milk today? Can't we all try and get along for the sake of old times?” He called him out. He watched as Dark Cacao’s gaze softened in an instant, as if he was going through some inner conflict himself.

“If you want to talk about the sake of the old times you should've come alone.”

Pure Vanilla's expression turned guilty in an instant. Those words rang like a crystal bell in a quiet room. He looked around at his friends but — no matter if they tolerated his boyfriend or not none of them could meet his eyes. He swallowed, lips parting slightly.

“Fine. I'll leave.” Shadow Milk suddenly said, sliding off of Pure Vanilla's lap and standing up. The two lovers looked at each other quietly.

Pure Vanilla made a motion like he was about to get up when Shadow Milk pressed his shoulder down with his hand. He shook his head slightly.

Don't sabotage your friendships for me.

“I'll be outside in the back area, I need some peace and quiet to think of a script anyway.” Shadow Milk told him as if the two of them were completely alone.

“Okay..” his boyfriend answered softly, yet his voice and expression were akin to a sad, lost, little sheep. He moved to give the hand on his shoulder a little squeeze.

I'll join you soon.

Shadow Milk leaned down for a sweet kiss, truly not caring about others watching. Pure Vanilla didn't seem to care either as he cupped his face, pulling him even closer. He didn't let Shadow Milk go for a moment too long.

Finally, as they parted ways Shadow Milk exhaled deeply, exiting the inn through the back door into an empty, hidden outside area where guests could relax.

He didn't know if this could be counted as a loss or not. But either way, no matter how much he wanted Pure Vanilla all for himself — and really, if he could he'd be more than happy to lock him up in a tower where it would just be the two of them — …

He knew how much the people inside meant to Pure Vanilla and thus, he couldn't bear to come in between them. Even if he knew that at this point his beloved would truly follow him to the end of the world.

Shadow Milk sat down on a bench under an old tree. He looked up at the blue sky with sprinkles of fluffy white clouds. He hoped it wouldn't rain later…

Now about that play.

Chapter Text

Shadow Milk opened up a small, blue portal to a pocket dimension — it was really more like an overly fancy, overly magical bag to him in all honesty. From there, he pulled a pencil and a flimsy, overfilled notebook.

He had some time to kill while Pure Vanilla was catching up with his friends, so he might as well get to work. This was way better than sitting in here alone with your thoughts!

The beast flipped through his surprisingly well organized notebook until he found a blank page. There, he wrote in pretty cursive, “Fairy Kingdom; play.” He had always been a scholar, of course his writing was impeccable as ever. If he wanted to, he could probably find a job as a calligraphist.

He spun the pencil between his fingers, every now and then tapping it on the blank page. He didn't really have any concrete ideas for a story— maybe he should just draw until something comes to mind? Usually he'd bounce his initial ideas off of Pure Vanilla but.. uhm—

Shadow Milk looked around the empty area.

Well! He could do this alone too! He didn't need any help!

With a flick of his wrist his pencil started to move smoothly on the page. He wasn't sure what he was drawing at first, but at some point he realized that whatever it was was starting to look like a forest — so he went with it. He filled out two pages with pictures of forests similar to one he lived at currently. He made sure to mix in some nature from Beast Yeast too, this was for the fairies after all.

Shadow Milk flipped the page. Something happening in a forest.. it shouldn't be scary, or sad — that would negate the whole “boosting morale” mission.

Maybe a love story then?

He chewed on the tip of his pencil with his fangs as he tried to imagine the protagonists of this story. The love interest should be a peerless beauty.. the other person someone others could relate to.

Those characters were always the hardest. How do you make someone who's relatable to most people when you yourself don't even know where to begin with finding anything in common with them.

So, to the peerless beauty it was.

Shadow Milk's eyes grew focused as he started to sketch out a character. At first as a human, then as a puppet.. They should have long flowing hair like sunlight.. pretty eyes that could take someone's breath away..

Maybe long flowing robes to match the waterfall of sunshine that was their hair? Yes. A warm smile inviting and loving all the same. Maybe even a ha—

“Honey!” Rung out a familiar voice, causing Shadow Milk to look up from his trance. He blinked a couple of times owlishly as he adjusted to reality — finally spotting his boyfriend at the door. He raised his hand up, waving him over, at which Pure Vanilla almost ran up to him.

“Already done?” He asked in surprise, but then again he didn't know how much time had passed.

“Ahm.. yes.” Pure Vanilla answered as he took a seat next to Shadow Milk.

The beast slowly squinted. “What happened?” He asked, blue eyes piercing right through the other's nervous expression.

“...”

“Should I ask your friends?” Shadow Milk lifted his brow, watching Pure Vanilla grip his staff just a little tighter.

“Once you left there was a long silence.” He finally admitted. “It took a bit but when everyone started to talk again I realized they were indeed speaking more freely without you there—” He explained.

Ouch.

“—but I couldn't. I kept worrying about you, which is silly. I know you're more than capable of being alone and all but.” Pure Vanilla trailed off, shifting a little closer. He leaned his head onto the beast's shoulder.

“But?” Shadow Milk asked, craning his neck to allow his boyfriend more space to rest.

“...”

“Are you going to make me beg—”

“Shadow Milk, did Dark Cacao's words hurt you?” He suddenly asked, sitting up straight again. He took his hands, giving them a squeeze.

Instantly, Shadow Milk looked like a spooked animal, wanting to run away — but the hands clasping his own prevented him from doing so.

“Of course not! You're indeed silly! Silly Vanilly—~ why would that old man's words hurt my fee—” he laughed. A laugh Pure Vanilla knew wasn't sincere.

“I know you.”

The world around them went quiet.

As if suddenly even the faint chatter from the Inn went completely mute. At this moment it was just the two of them, looking at each other.

I know you.” he repeated.

Shadow Milk parted his lips to disagree but — even he couldn't say a lie so obvious. Perhaps back then, he could've denied it all he liked but at the present, it really was impossible. Pure Vanilla could tell his intentions and emotions from the smallest changes in his body. If his lashes lowered ever so slightly, if one of his fingers twitched in the right moment, even if his breathing staggered.

Pure Vanilla saw it all and more importantly he knew what everything meant.

“Don't make me say it.” He replied, quietly, like a wounded animal.

“Of course I won't. Listen, I don't care what they all think of you. My friendships are incredibly dear to me and will always be important but you..” he squeezed the beasts trembling hands.

You are my other half, Shadow Milk.”

“...”

“And I don't for a moment regret bringing you along with me today.” He said firmly. “I’d take you with me a thousand times more if I could. Please don't think for a moment that my decision faltered when Dark Cacao said what he said, be it the truth or not.”

Pure Vanilla reached one of his hands to Shadow Milk's cheek, gently pressing his thumb at the spot where his birthmark ended on his cheek.

“I love you. My love for you will never fade.” he told him with a warm, heart melting smile.

Stupid, stupid man and his stupid, warm smile and stupid, pretty hair. How did he always know what to say?! How could he read him like an open book every day of their lives? His stupid comforting words really got on his nerves sometimes! He really hated how they made his heart melt until it was just a puddle. And he hated how that puddle would gather up in his ey—

Pure Vanilla leaned forward, brushing his lips against Shadow Milk's wet cheek. He was pulled into an embrace soon after, clawed hands digging into the skin underneath his robes. Shadow Milk was embracing him so tightly that it felt like the two of them might get crushed — but he didn't mind.

They stayed in this tight embrace for a long while — at least until Shadow Milk managed to calm down. He was the first one to pull away too, briefly wiping his face against his puffy sleeve. Pure Vanilla didn't comment on any of this, he knew that if he did — if he said anything about the vulnerability Shadow Milk had just shown he'd clasp up all over again.

No, this quiet comfort was exactly what the beast needed.

Pure Vanilla pressed a kiss against his forehead and then his temple — making him crack a little smile.

“Okay you can stop now.” Shadow Milk complained, using his hand to gently swat at his boyfriend's face who just simply took his wrist and kissed the center of his palm instead.

Shadow Milk looked away at that moment. But he did move in closer until he was securely wrapped around Pure Vanilla's arms while they sat next to each other.

“I've been planning for the play.” Shadow Milk was the first to speak up after a while, flipping to the pages of a beautiful forest.

“Oh? Any ideas?” Pure Vanilla asked, leaning his cheek on top of the beast's head while looking down.

“Kind of. I know it should be a love story. Something dramatic but not sad or scary — it needs to help everyone feel happier at the end of the day.” He explained, tapping his pencil against the pages. “I also know it'll be set up in some sort of beast yeast like forest woods.”

“Mhm!” He hummed in response while listening to his boyfriend.

“I have been thinking about the two main characters too. I have the love interest down I think but I can't think of someone relatable enough to everyone.” He sighed dramatically as he flipped another page to the character he had drawn earlier.

“Oh? Is this the love interest?” Pure Vanilla asked, pointing at a drawing.

“Yes, I wanted to make them into a peerless beauty.” Shadow Milk replied, feeling his pride swell a little at the fact that the love interest was easily recognizable as such.

“...”

“What's with the silence? Do you not like them?”

Uhm—”

“What ‘uhm’??”

“They kind of look like me.” Pure Vanilla pointed out with a carefully concealed smile. But his eyes were sparkling with mischief. Shadow Milk looked down at the drawing. Then at his boyfriend. Then at the drawing again. Slowly up to his boyfriend.

Drawing.

Peerless beauty.

,,,

“SHUT UP—” he barked out, face instantly flushing as he slammed close his notebook. Pure Vanilla finally burst into a fit of laughter, nuzzling aggressively against his boyfriend. He just wanted to bite and shake him!!!

“IT'S CUTE!!!“ he chirped happily.

“SHUT UP NO—”

“YOU THINK THAT I'M A PEERLESS BEAUTY!!~”

“YOU’RE AVERAGE AT BEST!”

Ow…” Pure Vanilla whined playfully, laughing harder when the beast suddenly reached up to pinch and knead his cheeks.

“No more talking. You're not allowed to. Actually, just go back inside!!” he continued poking his boyfriend's stupidly cute face.

“But I wanna spend time with you!!”

“We are always together!?”

“I wanna know more about that peerless bea—”

Shadow Milk closed the distance between them, shutting Pure Vanilla up the best way he knew how to. With a deep and sudden kiss.

This time Shadow Milk took the lead, shoving his tongue into Pure Vanilla's mouth who gladly accepted him. The tip of his tongue was slightly forked, splitting into two at the very end like a serpent’s. It was perfect for situations like this when he really wanted to shut up his pretty boyfriend.

His claws slid down Pure Vanilla's body, feeling for his waist and hips. Eventually, they settled on his hips, pressing down and massaging them. It made the blond let out a delicious whimper which Shadow Milk swallowed right up, causing him to grin just a little.

He tried to pull away, but before he could make it much further Pure Vanilla was already lunging forwards. He grabbed at the collar of his borrowed robe, pulling him right back down again into another hungry kiss.

It was like a complicated waltz they were playing. One would try to pull away yet the other would follow right along — stuck in an endless circle of passion and burning desire for each other.

He wasn't sure how it happened but at some point Pure Vanilla found himself pressed up against the wall of the Inn while Shadow Milk sucked on his tongue. His already blurry gaze was now all fuzzy as he felt spikes of pleasure travel down his spine. They really, really shouldn't continue like this.

It could escalate!

Pure Vanilla turned his head away, this time not letting himself get turned back around as he tried to catch his breath. “My love.. we need to slow down..” he breathed shakily, pleasure glazed eyes meeting a pair of blue ones who seemed to be in the same predicament.

“No we don't.” Shadow Milk said, already kissing him down his pretty jaw.

Mn.. my love, please..” he whimpered as he tilted his head up, revealing more of his neck. Ha! So much for wanting to stop.

Shadow Milk trailed his long tongue up his jaw, snickering into his ear. “What's wrong Nilly? Not so confident when I'm leading, hm?” He purred into his ear making his poor beloved tremble all over.

He took a step into Pure Vanilla, bringing his hand down to hoist up his leg by his thigh. His claws dug into the soft flesh underneath making his poor, poor boyfriend squirm again.

Shadow Milk..” he breathed desperately. He really, really wanted for that hand to travel further up now. Or maybe even for his boyfriend's mouth to slide further down — anything!!

Tsk, tsk.. we are in public.. someone could walk out here at any moment.” He whispered into his ear again, giving it a playful nip.

I don't care.

Pure Vanilla thought for a moment — when he was suddenly hit with a wave of clarity.

THEY WERE IN PUBLIC!! HIS FRIENDS WERE INSIDE!!!

He managed to actually wrangle out from beneath his boyfriend, gasping for some fresh air. His neatly done hair was a mess now and his robes.. were quite wrinkled all over. If that wasn't a telltale sign of what had almost happened then his bruised lips certainly were!

“Oh come on, my love. Won't you indulge your poor, poor boyfriend?~” Shadow Milk grinned, opening his arms up for Pure Vanilla.

,,,

God was he tempted.

“No. We agreed tonight, right? Right. No public. That's unethical.” He said, shaking his finger at Shadow Milk while still trying to catch his breath.

“You didn't seem to care about ethics when you whimp—”

“My friends are inside!! They could see!”

“I thought you weren't ashamed of me?” He challenged.

“No, you don't understand. I am the only one who should be able to see you like this.” Pure Vanilla blurted out in a fit of desperation — promptly shutting up right after. Whoops. His perhaps a little possessive side showed.

Shadow Milk wiped his mouth with the back of his hand as he thought about it. “Okay… since you're so possessive over me…” he sighed dramatically, snickering a little at how flustered poor Pure Vanilla was.

He walked up to him again, keeping his arms crossed.

“Okay, I'll release you. I guess. Go rejoin your friends.” He smirked, clearly feeling satisfied, for now. He quickly ran his friends through pure Vanilla's hair, combing it down again. He smoothed out his robes too — for the most part. He got a sick sense of pleasure in leaving some of the details untouched. A watchful eye could tell exactly what happened.

Pure Vanilla exhaled, relaxing a little finally. He moved to kiss his boyfriend goodbye but I'm the last moment he kissed his cheek instead — worried that things might escalate again.

“I'll wrap up in there and then we should go get groceries.” He told him. Shadow Milk nodded, giving him a small wave as he watched Pure Vanilla enter the inn again.

His gaze slid over to the window of the inn, right near the spot where he had pressed his beloved moment ago. His piercing blue eyes easily spotted where the ancients all sat together. He watched as Pure Vanilla took his seat again, laughing about something.

Considerably, the seat across from him was empty.

Shadow Milk let out a little snort, a slightly evil grin spreading across his lips as he walked back to the bench. Maybe he purposely pinned Pure Vanilla there. Or maybe it was an accident. Who was to tell!

Certainly not him, he had much more serious work to attend!

He picked up his notebook again, tearing out the two pages of, what was honestly, just doodles of his boyfriend. These are going into his special collection.

But this did mean that he had to think of something new.

Just then, a familiar blue bird landed on his knee, peering up at him. Shadow Milk took this moment to thank the skies that the blue bird didn't come early.

Actually…

“Would you like to be a character in a play?” He asked the bird with a grin as he drafted up a new story.

Chapter Text

It would take another hour until Pure Vanilla returned, just having said goodbye to his friends. If he really did come alone perhaps he'd have stayed longer but — it was impossible to do so knowing that his boyfriend was waiting out in the back.

He peeked out of the inn, catching the sight of Shadow Milk scribbling away in his notebook with a blue bird resting on top of his head. His expression was extremely focused as he wrote like he was running out of time.

Cute.

Pure Vanilla made his presence known after a couple of minutes of observing, finally sitting down next to his beloved. Funnily, Shadow Milk still didn't seem to notice him!

Hehehe.

Pure Vanilla grinned mischievously as he slowly raised his hands. He suddenly grabbed the beast's arm. “BOO!!” he chirped.

In a blink poor Shadow Milk sprung up so high that he floated up in the air. All of his eyes widened for a few seconds before he spun around towards his laughing boyfriend. “YOU!!!” he gasped, pointing a finger at him.

I’mSORRY—” Pure Vanilla wheezed, doubling over towards his knees. “It's not my fault you didn't notice me!!“ he snickered, yelping when a thin branch was tossed at his head.

“MENACE!!” Shadow Milk accused as he floated back down, using his closed notebook’s cornet to jab at the middle of pure Vanilla's birthmark on his forehead. “I hate you.” He said firmly, giving him a little glare while his poor heart tried to calm down from the scare.

“You didn't hate me an hour ago!” his boyfriend replied with a dumb, smug smile as he pushed the notebook away, rubbing his forehead.

“I stand corrected, I despise you.”

“But if you despise me, how will we kiss?” He asked, giving Shadow Milk a little pout and a deathly case of sad eyes.

“,,,I can make it work. Don't look at me like that—” he groaned, reaching out his hand to ruffle Pure Vanilla's hair but deciding in the last second to instead take his chin and give that a shake. He didn't want to ruin his pretty hair any more than they already did earlier.

His blue eyes softened a little when he saw his boyfriend's dumb, pretty smile. He gave his cheek a little pinch for good measure before finally sitting back down next to him. “So, are you finished or did you come for another make out?” He asked with a teasing smile, already eyeing his lips when a hand literally covered his eyes.

Rude!!

“I did wrap up with my friends, yes.” Pure Vanilla answered, still keeping his hand right where it was. “We should head out into town now! I think the farmer's market opened up a bit ago!” He explained cheerfully.

Right.

They still had errands to run.

Shadow Milk groaned internally. Was it too much that he just wanted to return home and have a good time with Pure Vanilla?? Was it such a crime to want to simply make love to your boyfriend senseless?! Life is a prison — and he should know!

“Do we have to? We have a garden back home!” He complained, his eyes finally being released.

“Yes we do! We don't grow that much food in our garden and you know that. I want to get some fruits and vegetables. Maybe some protein for dinner too! Not to mention flour, milk, eggs… It'd also be nice to find someone selling cutlery.” He explained, shaking his head a little at his displeased boyfriend.

Shadow Milk made a decision in that very instant. He was going to expand their little home until they didn't need to go outside ever again. They could get chickens! And cows! And whatever else they needed!

“We don't need to buy cutlery, I'll make it for us.” He said firmly, raising his chin a little. “I have dabbled in metal work before, I can do it. Or I'll just carve them out but either way — don't waste our money on that.” He continued, his pride being a little wounded at even the mere suggestion that they should go out and buy something he could make.

“Okay okay!” Pure Vanilla chuckled, pressing a kiss against his boyfriend's adorable annoyed face. “How about we get you some new carving tools instead?” He offered, smiling knowingly. He watched as a twinkle lit up in the beast's eyes, making them dilated just a little. Ah, there it was. He hit the bullseye.

“Fine. I guess.” Shadow Milk brushed him off, standing up and taking his hand. “Let's get going then, I don't want to take too long in the town.”

“Yes!” Pure Vanilla smiled, interlocking their fingers. “I promise I'll be quick! Maybe we can even get some lunch while outside?” He offered, eyes briefly sliding to the blue bird who had made its new home at the top of his boyfriend's head. It was absolutely adorable — objectively. Maybe this will make their trip a little easier?

“You're never quick. At anything.” Shadow Milk commented as they walked. He started swinging their hands back and forth again.

“I'm quick at some things! I read quickly?” Pure Vanilla tried to defend himself. It was true, yet between the two of them he was still a slower reader than his beloved scholar of a boyfriend.

Ha! Not quickly enough! But I guess it's nice that you aren't quick all the time.” Shadow Milk laughed, glancing up at his beloved through his long lashes. “You really know how to work me up sometimes.” He commented, batting his pretty, pretty lashes. His grin only widened when he felt his hand get squeezed.

Shadow Milk.” Pure Vanilla warned him, cheeks already tinted a pretty, red color.

Tsk! You're not fun!” He complained playfully.

“Not when we are here!” Here being the edge of the town square. Even if it was just the beginning there was already a crowd of people all eager to browse the farmer's market today. Stalls of food and artisanal products covered the town square. Big, colorful canopies rustled in the wind, protecting the people from the warm sun as they browsed and chatted.

It was perfect! Pure Vanilla thought.

This was hell. Shadow Milk thought.

The two of them entered the crowd, hand in hand. At some point Shadow Milk had taken out a basket, he had made specifically for his boyfriend, out of his pocket dimension. Pure Vanilla was basically glowing as he carried the basket in one hand and held his boyfriend's hand with the other — his staff was meanwhile being carried by the said beast.

“Okay, we need eggs, flour, milk, butter, vegetables, fruit, carving tools, and shears.” Pure Vanilla listed off to Shadow Milk who had shuffled closer to him. He wasn't the biggest fan of crowds but he'd rather be in a crowd than wait outside for his beloved.

“I see the eggs.” He said, pointing at a stall with an older lady.

This was another reason why he tagged along. In an ever changing, unfamiliar environment paired with a big crowd … he definitely needed help in navigating. It's not that he couldn't do it on his own but this definitely saved a lot of time and effort. And, it felt kinda nice having Shadow Milk fuss over him like this. It was cute!

“How many should we get?” Asked the beast as they approached, tilting his head to the side a little.

“At least two dozen. That should last us a while.” He replied, smiling warmly at the old lady. Shadow Milk looked away as Pure Vanilla talked — he wasn't the greatest when it came to this. A lot of people still knew him for his—… past. Perhaps in a few centuries they could walk the streets without being stared at. Maybe then he could even hold lectures again or plays under his own name.

Wouldn't that be nice?

“Sweetheart?” Pure Vanilla repeated himself, taking Shadow Milk out of his daydream. He glanced down at their basket, seeing that his boyfriend had finished up.

“Right, come along.”

“Where were you just now?” Pure Vanilla asked while they browsed.

“I was right next to you, obviously.”

“No, you weren't.”

“Maybe we should get your eyes ch—”

“...”

Shadow Milk sighed deeply. He couldn't lie to his boyfriend as well as he used to — that look always compelled him to speak out what was really on his mind. Despite the crowd of people around them he felt safe enough to speak up, knowing his voice was well camouflaged.

“Fine. I was just thinking that it'd be nice to not be constantly observed.” He admitted, pressing the golden staff he was carrying a little harder into the ground.

Honey..”

“Don't honey me. Focus on getting — what was it, flour? There.” He brushed off his boyfriend, unwilling to talk about this now.

Soon enough, the two of them had gathered most of the food they needed — the basket was almost overfilled yet Pure Vanilla carried it as if it was just a pile of grapes. Their little journey for food was mostly silent after that conversation. He had attempted to chat up the beast a couple of times to no avail — he had hit a nerve earlier.

Pure Vanilla was frowning a little as they shifted over to the stall selling artisan tools. How could he possibly make it up to his boyfriend? He didn't think that what he said was that bad.. but he understood that perhaps he pushed a little too hard.

Mn.

“I think we should get silver shears. They won't rust.” Shadow Milk spoke up first for the first time in a little while. He had been bent over, looking at everything that stall had to offer — upon inspection Pure Vanilla realized it was a stall specifically selling items for taking care of sheep.

“Sure! We will get anything you like!” He smiled a little too eagerly.

Mhm.” Shadow Milk hummed in soft approval, letting go of his boyfriend's hand to pick up a pair. He made a cutting motion in the air, flipping them back and forth a few times. He did that with a couple of more shears before returning to the first pair. “These ones are good.”

“Okay!” Pure Vanilla smiled, turning towards the vendor to pay for them. But, instantly he noticed how strangely the man behind the stall was eyeing Shadow Milk.

Not now. He was just starting to cheer up!

Quickly, Pure Vanilla stepped in front of his boyfriend, shielding him from the stranger’s view. “We would like to buy these.” he said firmly, already pushing the money into the man's hand. He didn't give him an opportunity to speak up — having grabbed Shadow Milk's hand and pulled him away.

“Jeez what was that? Where was the whole ‘good day' and ‘how are you’?” The beast asked, glancing back briefly.

“I didn't like him.” Pure Vanilla answered simply, instantly catching the beast's curiosity.

Hm

It was rare for him not to like someone.

“Well, too bad for him then!” Shadow Milk shrugged, looking around. It seems that carving tools will be a little harder to find — they should probably ask the people selling wooden figures where— WHOA-

He was suddenly being pulled in the opposite direction, blinking owlishly. His confused gaze slid up to his beloved who was staring at something in laser focus.

“Make up?” Shadow Milk asked, a little dumbfounded as he stared at the far smaller stall selling rouges.

“Yes!! Look!!” His boyfriend chirped, picking up a pretty, dark indigo colour lipstick. He was smiling a little mischievously as he tested it on the back of his hand. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect!!!

Ehehe.

“I'm buying you this.” He declared.

Oh?

“Me?” Shadow Milk asked, looking down at the pretty color.

“Yes. I think it'll look very pretty on you.” He smiled, eyes twinkling.

Oh.

“I see.” Shadow Milk grinned a little as he took the lipstick from his beloved, tilting his head to the side. He spotted a mirror in the corner of the stall, his grin widening. With a swift motion he bent over to get a closer look. His lips parted as he put on the lipstick that had been oh so carefully picked out by his boyfriend.

It fit him beautifully.

When he turned back towards Pure Vanilla almost dropped their basket as his eyes widened.

“We need to get out. Now.” he breathed, taking a step towards Shadow Milk.

“And my carving tools?” He asked, batting his lashes at his beloved again — finally!! They could go home early!!

“We will get them later, I promise.” He swore, his eyes never leaving his beloved’s dark indigo lips. He swallowed dryly — he didn't think he'd dig his own grave like this!! He just wanted to get something the beast would like!!

Pure Vanilla looked around them before taking his hand and pulling him out of the town square in a hurry. He ignored the beast's cackling as they entered a dark alley.

“Was this your plan all along?” Shadow Milk asked, grinning a sickly sweet smile.

“I didn't know you'd look this good in lipstick.” Pure Vanilla whispered as he set down their basket, walking into Shadow Milk until the other was pressed against a wall.

Oh, hello there.~” the beast purred at his boyfriend, looking like a cat who just got the cream.

Their lips crashed together.

Chapter Text

Shadow Milk let out a quiet noise of surprise when Pure Vanilla surged forward, crashing their lips together. The kiss felt far more intense than any other they had shared that day, actually making him feel as if his head was starting to melt.

His boyfriend pulled for air eventually and… the beast felt like he had been shot with a lightning of desire. He didn't think that this lipstick would smudge so easily. He didn't know it'd transfer so well that it made it look as if Pure Vanilla had some sort of dark blue tinted gloss on his pretty lips.

He dry swallowed when he realized how intensely he was being stared at.

“Your lipstick smudged…” Pure Vanilla murmured, voice absolutely breathless as his chest heaved. Clearly, he was trying to hold back — Shadow Milk knew that much.

“Yeah.” He breathed. “It's on you now.” He commented, reaching up a clawed hand to his beloved's chin. He pressed his thumb against Pure Vanilla's bottom lip, slowly dragging it down and leaving a trail of that pretty, pretty dark color.

This would be the last semi coherent he did for a while.

Pure Vanilla took his wrist with incredible speed, making him unable to pull his hand away. His head tilted to the side slightly as he gave his fingers a little kiss — causing poor Shadow Milk to flush.

"What are you doing?” He asked.

“Giving you a moment to breathe.” Pure Vanilla replied against his palm. He stayed like that for an excruciatingly long minute — with each passing second Shadow Milk felt like he was going to explode. Those yellow blue eyes stared right through him with a piercing, heated gaze. He was pretty sure that his boyfriend didn't even blink once — as if he was afraid that if he did he'd miss some sort of detail.

Finally, unable to continue looking at his dumb, pretty face Shadow Milk glanced away. As soon as he did though, Pure Vanilla was kissing him again. He had been like a predator, waiting for his prey to lower its guard for just a second before he attacked.

The beast didn't even have the opportunity to try and change the tides of their kiss as a familiar, wake tongue pressed against his lips before slipping into his mouth. This on its own maybe would've been fine — it wasn't the first time Shadow Milk was pressed against a wall while being kissed senseless. However usually, there would be far less pulling away — unlike this time.

This time, it seemed that every few seconds Pure Vanilla pulled away to look at the masterpiece he was painting with his boyfriend's smudged lipstick. Just when he would think that he got a moment to breathe, the beast's lips would be captured again, making him choke up and swallow whatever sweet sensation Pure Vanilla was giving him.

It felt like he was being made to drink sweet, vanilla nectar in waves of pleasure that was this feast his boyfriend had captured for himself.

Pure Vanilla's hands started to roam soon after. Touching, caressing, groping, pulling whenever they could possibly reach. As usual he was particularly fond of his boyfriend's slim waist. Back in the spire Shadow Milk wasn't that good at taking care of himself, neither of them were. But today, in the present both of them have been getting more and more healthy — it always made Pure Vanilla's heart spike whenever he could feel physical changes within his boyfriend. He was becoming less frail by the day!

He smiled a little into their next kiss as his hand traveled up to Shadow Milk's chest, giving it a little squeeze. The gasp that his boyfriend let out at this only riled him further on to continue.

Love..” Pure Vanilla whispered against his lips as his fingers found a particularly sensitive spot on his boyfriend's chest, giving it a firm press. “You're so pretty...” he purred into him, kissing his lipstick smudged chin.

Vanilla..” Shadow Milk breathed, tilting his chin up to reveal his neck for his beloved. Yeah, he was a goner already, sue him. No one could possibly fight like this! Not when the coldness of the wall contrasted perfectly with their bodies pressed together and especially not when those calloused hands he knew oh so well kept caressing some of the most sensitive parts of his body.

“Yes, my love?“ Pure Vanilla answered as he trailed kisses from his chin to his jaw. He waited a couple of seconds to see if his boyfriend would answer. Hearing that he was getting no response — definitely not because Shadow Milk was struggling to breathe — he continued on with his antics.

The kisses on the beast's neck were longer and more passionate than the careful ones pressed on his jaw. His tongue moved up Shadow Milk's jugular, feeling each and every time his pulse would spike — which was now a constant. Just that single action made his knees almost buckle from underneath his ravenously hungry boyfriend.

Seeing this, Pure Vanilla could only do the next logical thing. His hands flew down, grasping Shadow Milk at his soft thighs before hoisting him up and walking into him until they really were completely pressed against each other.

The beast's head spun when he was picked up like he weighed nothing. He was well used to being man handled like this but damn it got him every single time. His trembling legs locked around his boyfriend's waist, keeping himself secure right where he was.

In this position…

Before he could finish the thought his lips were being kissed again. Seeing as his mind went completely blank for the heat between them Shadow Milk finally fully gave in. His hands reached out, one flying to squeeze his beloved’s arm while the other moved to squeeze his chest — he was a very simple man. He knew what he liked.

Feeling this, Pure Vanilla laughed into the kiss, giving the beast’s bottom lip a little playful pull with his teeth. “What do you think you're doing?~” he teased him, eyes never leaving Shadow Milk's lipstick covered face.

“Admiring..” the beast answered simply, the hand on his boyfriend's chest moving to give the long strand of blond hair a little twirl.

“That's not the only thing.” Pure Vanilla pointed out causing Shadow Milk to blink. There wasn't much else he could do. He was quite literally trapped between a wall and his boyfriend.

Before he could ask for a clarification Pure Vanilla lifted his hips up a little — pressing his knee against a slightly hard spot.

Oh.

“Kissing got you so riled up, love?~” He commented, that dumb, hot smirk that made Shadow Milk shiver all over curling at his lips.

It's..ah—” he tried but, alas, completing sentences right now was really an impossible task to Shadow Milk.

“Tsk.. can't even talk.” Pure Vanilla laughed into his ear, giving the tip a little nip. Yeah, he couldn't take it anymore. Shadow Milk shifted, trying to shamelessly grind against his boyfriend's knee — it was only riling him on further but how could he possibly resist?

“If you continue you'll get yourself into a predicament.” Pure Vanilla commented, moving to kiss his neck again. This time he let his teeth lightly graze against the tender flesh there as he tried to find a good spot.

“Don't… ahcare.” Shadow Milk replied as he found a good rhythm for himself — only for that rhythm to fall apart when he felt teeth sink into skin. He gasped, finally letting out a quiet moan — truly music to his boyfriend's ears. He fell apart while a sensitive spot on his neck was being eaten up by Pure Vanilla.

Pure Vanilla lamented that he didn't have more arms.. he should really talk to Shadow Milk about exploring his own shapeshifting powers now that the two of them understood each other so well in every sense of the way.

He pressed a kiss against the tender spot he had just bit into, knowing it'll most definitely leave a mark. One of many he had made the previous night.

Shadow Milk was truly and thoroughly going to lose it if this keeps going at this pace. It was unfair that he was the only one this riled up!! Why couldn't they just skip to the good part already?!

Then, a mischievous idea popped into his pretty head. His hand which had been switching between playing with Pure Vanilla's golden hair and his chest moved a little more to the middle — to his glowing souljam. Without mercy he pressed his fingers into the center of the glowing gem, his smirk widening when he felt his boyfriend shiver on top of him.

Now they were talking.

The two of them looked at each other, eyes perfectly reflecting their shared desires and lust. There was absolutely no doubt that they wanted this.

That they needed this.

Just as their lips pressed against each other for what would be the kiss to break whatever hesitation either of them had —

BANG. CRASH.

A loud sound rang out through the alley making Pure Vanilla quite literally jump away from Shadow Milk, accidentally dropping him in the process.

A cat ran between them.

Shadow Milk blinked a few times at the loss of the heat. Then, frankly, at the pain in his lower back — and not the good kind. How did this happen??

I’M SO SORRY—” came his boyfriend's apologetic voice. He watched Pure Vanilla kneel down next to him, frowning sheepishly.

Blink. Blink.

“Did you just drop me because of a cat?” He asked very slowly, the eyes in his hair all glaring lighthearted daggers at his boyfriend.

Gulp.

“...yes…” Pure Vanilla admitted, bowing his head in shame.

Inhale.

Exhale.

“Once we get home, not only are you making up for this but you're doing the dishes too.” He said simply, using the art of what he had learned — don't get upset over silly accidents even if you really, really wanted to smack your boyfriend over the head right now. It's not his fault per say that he dropped you.

You can always make him regret it later!

Pure Vanilla was pale as he could be while he helped Shadow Milk up. Such calmness… he could see his impending doom in his near future.

Shadow Milk brushed himself off, taking another hard look at his dumb boyfriend. Dumb, cute boyfriend with lipstick stains all over his dumb, cute face. This was a powerful weapon indeed.

“We need to wash our faces.”

“Okay!”

“And then get my new carving tools.”

“Okay!”

“Are you just going to keep saying okay?”

“Ok—,,,nooo” Pure Vanilla laughed nervously.

He shifted forward, giving his boyfriend a big hug which made Shadow Milk squirm with annoyance. He was allowed to be a little pissy!! “I'm really, really, sorry sweetheart!!! I really didn't mean to — I just got scared!” He promised, giving his cheek a peck.

“Scared that someone might see you with me?” He deadpanned in response, crossing his arms.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Shadow Milk, why on earth would you think that? You know that I love you!” Pure Vanilla frowned deeply. He was getting a deep sense of deja vu..

“I know, just — ugh.” Shadow Milk tried to explain himself before shaking his head. He had been getting better, but some insecurities continued to eat at him despite constant reassurance. That naturally led to him feeling bad about it. He knew Pure Vanilla loved him — they were made for each other. He knew that he didn't care about the public's opinion of him.. but still… sometimes—

“It's true though. I don't want anyone else to see you like that. “ He admitted, looking away with flushed cheeks. “It makes me… envious thinking about it. Those sounds and looks are mine alone.” Pure Vanilla continued. He had a feeling that maybe if he dug up his carefully concealed feelings — bingo.

A pair of warm arms wrapped back around him.

“Shut up.” Shadow Milk said, hiding his face in the other's shoulder to avoid his blush being spotted or even worse — his dumb smile. “Possessive freak.” He insulted affectionately, making Pure Vanilla laugh.

“I love you.” He told the beast, smiling to himself as he pet his hair. “I'm sorry for dropping you.”

“...” Shadow Milk nuzzled his face a little closer into the crook of his neck. “...I love you too.” He whispered quietly, trying to ignore the big smile that was most definitely spreading across his boyfriend's face.

Hehehe!!!!! Cute!!!!

Pure Vanilla pressed a kiss to his forehead.

“C'mon, let's get you your tools — do you need a few moments?” He asked, briefly glancing down.

“I'm fine, believe me the mood is gone.” Shadow Milk rolled his eyes playfully, taking his hand. “But again, reminding you — you have so much to make up for tonight.” He laughed a little.

The pair exited the alley after a bit, in search of the perfect tools for the beast.

Notes:

There you guys go, a little treat before ao3 goes down for 20h. I didn't think that them getting steamy would last so long ,, but it just kinda happened. I don't think they'll have another moment that's as intense until later on when they get home

Chapter Text

The pair had sneaked their way over to a lonely fountain — they couldn't really go out into the farmer's market again with lipstick covered faces now could they? And not to mention the big back Pure Vanilla had left on Shadow Milk's neck.

“Is that you?” Shadow Milk asked, squinting at the carving on the fountain while his boyfriend washed his face. Pure Vanilla looked up to where the beast was looking, his eyes squinting a little as well. “Possibly? I'm not sure.” He replied genuinely as he reached out to touch the carving with a wet hand.

“You look silly.” Shadow Milk teased him as he scooted over, cupping some water in his hands to wash his face as well. Good thing that the lipstick didn't stain too much!! Or maybe, they didn't really give it an opportunity to stain, did they?

“I do.” Pure Vanilla chuckled as he stood up straight, taking a deep inhale. His gaze briefly shifted towards the sky. It should be around noon now… where could they go out for lunch? A little break after uhm— that would be nice.

As he debated on what they could eat he heard a distant sound of music. Was there something happening?

“Sweetheart, wanna check out the music?” He suddenly asked, eyes sparkling with curiosity. Curiosity which was perfectly reflected within his boyfriend. Shadow Milk who was always hungry for discovering something new nodded.

“Sure. Sounds like a cheery tune, maybe someone's getting married.“ he commented, shooting Pure Vanilla a grin “We'd be oh sooooo horrible if we crashed a wedding!” He sighed dramatically all the while taking his boyfriend's hand to lead him towards the sound of music.

“Hey now, we won't crash any weddings! That's mean.” Pure Vanilla scolded the beast, receiving only a ‘booo’ in response. He couldn't help but laugh, rolling his eyes playfully — no matter how much growth Shadow Milk had gone through at the end of the day he still enjoyed being a trickster and a menace. Honestly? Pure Vanilla loved him for that.

As the two walked aimlessly, hand in hand, a cry of a child rang through their street. Pure Vanilla turned around alarmed, quickly spotting a little girl who was looking up at the sky with a tear soaked face.

“MY BALLOOON!!!” She cried, watching her blue balloon float further and further up into the sky. Unable to resist the situation, Pure Vanilla let go of his boyfriend's hand to go and comfort the poor child in distress.

“Hi.” He spoke gently as he kneeled down to her height. “Did you lose your balloon?” He asked her, watching as she nodded tearfully, glancing up again before focusing on the adult in front of her.

“How about we get you a new one then?” He asked gently, offering her his hand with a warm, inviting smile. Pure Vanilla noticed the girl hesitate as she rubbed her eyes.

“That was the last blue one…”.she sniffled, bottom lip trembling as if she was about to burst into tears again.

Ah.

Hm..

Pure Vanilla looked into their basket, hoping he had something that could maybe cheer the girl up despite her lost balloon. “How about we go get you—”

“Here.” came a voice from above.

Shadow Milk gracefully floated down from the sky, holding the little girl's bright blue balloon. Seeing it, she let out a loud gasp, her face instantly lighting up like the sun.

“THANK YOU MISTER!!” she chirped, hopping up and down as she tried to reach her beloved toy — only for Shadow Milk to move it away from her reach at the last second. Her smile turned into a little frown in a flash.

“Give me your wrist — if you hold it you'll lose it again.” He told her, making her blink but offering her wrist regardless.

The beast very, very carefully tied the balloon around it — being extra careful to not accidentally knick her with his sharp claws.

“There.” He smiled a little, standing up straight again. Just as he did he felt tiny hands wrap around his leg — the girl was … hugging him? Shadow Milk blinked owlishly as he stared at possibly the first child in a long time that didn't seem scared of him.

“THANK YOU MISTER!!” She giggled, jumping a few times while hugging him before running off to go play with her friends — but not before turning back once to wave at the beast.

He pressed a hand to his chest, feeling it fill with … warmth. The kind of warmth he hadn't felt in a long, long time.

Strange.

Shadow Milk turned to look at his boyfriend who was, naturally smiling like an absolute idiot. His face flushed instantly at the proud and loving look Pure Vanilla was giving him.

“ShuT UP—” he voice cracked just as his boyfriend surged forward. Before Pure Vanilla had a chance to kiss him or anything of the sort the beast pressed his hand into his face.

“I DIDN'T EVEN SAY ANYTHING!!" Pure Vanilla laughed joyfully, pressing his face against the familiar, soft palm.

“YET!!!“

“IM PRO—MPHF—” Pure Vanilla didn't even get to finish his sentence when Shadow Milk shut him up with his hand. They stared at each other, the beast looking increasingly more embarrassed at his boyfriend's sparkling eyes.

“...”

“!!!!“

“I'm going to let go now but you CANNOT say anything about what just happened, got it?” He spoke slowly, giving his boyfriend a half hearted glare. He let go as Pure Vanilla nodded against his palm. Even though he wasn't speaking, his sparkling expression said a thousand words — he looked just about ready to kick his feet and giggle.

Cute!!!!

“Anyways, the music. Come we have a wedding to crash.” Shadow Milk changed the subject before his beloved could quite literally burst from the sheer sunshine emanating from him.

“Right! But no wedding crashing.” He laughed a little as they locked hands again — this time Pure Vanilla swung them back and forth, having an especially cheery pep in his step.

How annoyingly cute.

The two of them rounded a corner, only to quickly retrieve a few steps. Slowly, they peeked out from their hiding spot.

It was in fact not a wedding! Good! Pure Vanilla though, feeling a bit of relief wash over him. The scene playing in front of them was a typical event in the town on such a nice, warm day. There was a band of local musicians playing folk songs while people danced in the street, having a good time. On the side one could spot people on the benches — usually older folk — laughing and chatting away while watching the show. Pure Vanilla was unable not to smile at such a heartwarming scene unfolding in front of them. Laughter and music rang through the air — a sweet melody of community.

He glanced down at Shadow Milk who was quietly gazing at the scene with dilated eyes. He knew better than to ask the beast to join him in the crowd — but there was something else he could do.

Pure Vanilla set their basket aside, stretching once before bowing a little behind Shadow Milk with one hand stretched out.

“Would you like to dance with me, my love?” He asked with a warm smile, making the poor beast jump in surprise. He glanced down at his boyfriend's hand with a tinge of suspicion. It wouldn't be their first time dancing, no.

However the last time they danced… was back in the spire. Pure Vanilla — or Truthless Recluse — didn't have much of a choice then, being pulled around by strings carefully strung by the beast. It hadn't been a fun experience for his other half, even if he himself had gotten a twisted sense of pleasure from being able to control him as he pleased.

Truthfully while he regretted a lot of what he did their puppeteered dance was a secret, incredibly guilty pleasure of his.

“I promise I don't bite.” Pure Vanilla joked, briefly glancing at the slightest peak of the mark he had left on his neck. “Usually.” He clarified with a laugh.

Shadow Milk cracked a little smile at that, glancing around them once. He didn't get a chance to take Pure Vanilla's hand when suddenly the other scooped him forward by his waist, bringing them close. His dumb, pretty boyfriend was smiling ear to ear as he began to lead an improvised dance to the sound of the music.

It actually sounded similar to what had played back then in the spire, but far more cheerful. Pure Vanilla was still smiling as he gave the poor beast a spin. “Come on, honey! I know you know how to dance!” He laughed, taking a step into him.

Shadow Milk instinctively moved a step back, laughing a little. “It's far easier when I can string you along.” He joked, wanting to rest the waters.

Ha! Well this time I am leading! So no strings!” Pure Vanilla replied cheerfully, a knowing glint in his eyes. Seeing that his boyfriend was actually enjoying himself despite what he had assumed was a difficult memory Shadow Milk started to let loose a little.

The two of them danced together, their robes flowing elegantly around them while they improvised their own version of a waltz. It had started with Pure Vanilla taking the lead but at some point during a spin Shadow Milk had taken it instead, grinning mischievously.

And so it began, their playful battle of who would lead the dance. Every time Pure Vanilla tried to advance and take the lead Shadow Milk would let go to spin him around, making both of them laugh. As the music progressed, Pure Vanilla grew more and more determined to regain what he had lost — but every time he tried Shadow Milk had another trick up his sleeve!!

He came close once, but just as his hand slid to his boyfriend's waist he felt himself float up! Pure Vanilla let out a little squeak of surprise, losing balance — before he could fall, familiar arms caught his waist, followed by an even more familiar, smug cackle.

Pure Vanilla needed to focus!!

His brows furrowed as he took a bold step in the air, surprising both of them. And so their dance went on, sometimes with their feet on the ground and sometimes with them in the air — it was like gravity didn't matter to them.

The rules of this world didn't exist any more, the only thing that was there were two halves of a whole dancing together to the music of their hearts.

Then, on the very last note Pure Vanilla suddenly dipped Shadow Milk by his waist.

“I win.“ he breathed as their faces inched closer — both of them entirely out of breath. They gazed at each other before bursting into laughter. Shadow Milk had brought his hands up to take Pure Vanilla's pretty face, bringing it down to press their foreheads together affectionately.

His heart felt like it'd burst from happiness. The carefully concealed memory of their first dance was now neatly stitched together with this experience. Maybe now… maybe now they could dance more often? Shadow Milk thinks he'd like that..

Just then, an applause came, making both men jump a little — thankfully Pure Vanilla managed not to drop his boyfriend for a second time that day. But more importantly — when did they exit their little hiding place??

Awkward.

How long have these people been watching them for? Did they hate them? Hate him? What if—

Shadow Milk breath staggered as he looked around like he was looking for an escape route when he felt a tug on his robe. His gaze shifted down to the little girl from before — her balloon still securely wrapped around her tiny wrist.

“Mister!! That was so pretty!!” He chirped at him, sparkling.

“Uhm—”

“I made you this! My mama always says a good um— deed …? Deserves another!” She chatted to the frankly confused beast. Her tiny hands then lifted up something that Shadow Milk would treasure for the rest of his immortal lifetime.

A pretty, slightly wonky, flower crown made with daisies and blue freesias.

Shadow Milk bent down on his knee, bowing his head to let the little girl place it into his hair, all of his eyes gazing at her with uncharacteristic softness.

“It's very pretty, thank you.” He told her with a genuine smile making the girl giggle. She hugged him, again, goodbye before rushing off to what he could only assume was her mother.

Shadow Milk stayed kneeling for a few moments before standing up again. Why were his cheeks hurting? Was he smiling too much?? Ugh, how annoying. He thought while his smile never faltered, not even when his sparkling boyfriend's face came into view.

There were no words exchanged between them, but the genuine happiness radiating off of Shadow Milk told Pure Vanilla everything he needed to know.

“ANOTHER SONG!” he chirped to the crowd, raising up his hand into the air while using his other to pull his beloved by his waist. The crowd cheered with him and the band started to play a folk song.

This time, Pure Vanilla took his beloved's hand, spinning with him while laughing. Unlike their last waltz, this was an entirely community driven dance — the kind Shadow Milk never thought he'd get to experience, not even when he was the Fount of Knowledge.

They spun and cheered, at some point getting separated by the crowd of people. Yet, at the end they'd always find each other, practically flying into each other's arms.

Neither was sure how much time had passed at this place with each other and the people around them. They danced and danced until they couldn't stand anymore.

That's how they found themselves on this very bench.

“I don't think I've done this much exercise in years!” Pure Vanilla laughed, fanning his face with his hand. His boyfriend was nestled on his shoulder, gazing at the crowd of people, new and old, in front of them.

“Thank you.” He suddenly said.

“Wh— you're welcome? For what exactly?” Pure Vanilla asked curiously.

“I never thought I'd get to experience this.” He shrugged, closing his eyes.

Maybe he wouldn't have to wait that long until he could walk the streets without being scowled at.

Maybe…

Maybe being here wasn't that bad after all.

Chapter Text

After a while Shadow Milk gave a big stretch as he got up from the bench. He felt incredibly light currently — the warmth that had gathered in his heart had yet to simmer out and leave. Pure Vanilla followed suit smiling at his boyfriend.

“Do you want to dance agai—” he began to ask, already having put out his hand for the beast. When his stomach growled.

,,,

Shadow Milk looked at him up and down before grinning with a teasing smile. “I think we should probably go get lunch. You seem hungry.” He told him, taking his hand regardless. Once again their fingers interlocked in a tight, unbreakable hold.

“Ah…” Pure Vanilla smiled sheepishly. “You're right, we have been here for a while. And our breakfast wasn't all that filling.” He admitted, scratching his face awkwardly. He didn't quite realize how hungry he had been until just now — maybe he could've gone for longer without lunch but dancing for such a long time was bound to use up both of their energies.

It was time to recharge!!

The pair bid their farewells as they made their way away from the event. Shadow Milk had even taken a brief moment to go back to the little girl and bid her goodbye as well. It seemed that she had made a far bigger impact on him than she or even he realized.

But Pure Vanilla could tell. He could tell by how his beloved's eyes sparkled with each step they took. He could tell by how loose strands of hair curled and coiled affectionately around the flower crown that was still on his head.

It was like entirely new life was breathed into the beast.

He smiled to himself as the two walked aimlessly, trying to find somewhere to sit down and relax. There were plenty of bakeries all around, of course, but they really needed a proper meal. There was no telling when they'll be home today! Not to mention... he wasn't exactly sure if he will even get the opportunity to cook them dinner or if he will be jumped by his beastly boyfriend as soon as the doors close behind them. So it was for the best that they filled up now.

Shadow Milk let out a hum, his gaze having been stuck on the sky for a little while of their walk now. “It'll rain later.” He suddenly said making Pure Vanilla look up as well, with curiosity. The sky was still a pretty, bright blue color with some low, white, fluffy clouds sprinkled throughout.

“Are you sure? I feel like it's only getting warmer.” He asked, slowing down their steps a little so that they wouldn't accidentally bump into something or someone while cloud gazing.

“Mhm.” The beast hummed an affirmative, pointing at the clouds. “Those are Cumulus clouds. You can see there that they're kind of merging together. It means that they're turning into Cumulonimbus clouds — that paired with the heat is bound to make a thunderstorm later.” He lectured with a smile on his lips — he loved this.

“Oh!! … we didn't bring an umbrella.” Pure Vanilla frowned a little. He didn't even have his hat to shield him!

“Pfsh— if my calculations are correct, and they always are, it'll only rain in the late afternoon. Unless the wind picks up … but it also might slow them down? Either way, don't worry your pretty head, I got us.” he spoke, his prideful tone beaming through every word.

It felt nice to have someone to listen to him ramble on like this. More importantly, it felt nice to have someone believe him. Back then… he didn't like to think about it much. There was a person who would always listen though.

The beast quickly shook his head, focusing right back on the present. There was no need to think about the past — especially not the past that was so far gone.

There was a tug on his hand.

“Sweetheart! How about we go there?” Pure Vanilla smiled, lips curling with excitement. It was a small, locally owned restaurant — quite cozy in nature with all sorts of cute decor. It was as if a little garden decided to turn into a place where people could have their meal.

“Sure thing.” Shadow Milk smiled knowingly. He was well aware that his boyfriend was an absolute sucker for such things. He was one of the reasons why they had such a plentiful flower garden back home.

Pure Vanilla suppressed an excited laugh as they approached. His eyes lit up more now that he was up close and able to really take in the tiny restaurant. How adorable!!! He eagerly took a seat in the corner of the garden. It was far enough to be comfortable for the two of them, giving them some privacy, as well as to watch the people passing the bustling streets.

“Did you have something you wanted to eat or are we sitting here because you want to be surrounded by flowers?” Shadow Milk asked as he took a seat across from his beloved, making sure that their basket and the staff laid nearly to the side so as to not disturb anyone. What he got in response was a sheepish smile, making him roll his eyes playfully. Typical.

“For someone so humble you sure enjoy pretty things.” He joked, placing his chin into his hand while staring at the man in front of him.

“Of course, I look at you every day — don't I? I can be humble and still love looking at people and stuff that brings me joy.” He replied smoothly, smiling right back as Shadow Milk's face flushed.

“Shut up.”

“Mn.” Pure Vanilla hummed, knowing that he won this little banter of theirs. Just then a waiter came over to give them their menus and get their drink orders — Pure Vanilla having ordered a blueberry lemonade while Shadow Milk settled on just water for now.

His eyes glazed over the menu, not really finding anything he particularly wanted. All the options seemed good but nothing stood ou—

Pure Vanilla gasped with joy.

Shadow Milk looked up, blinking owlishly at his boyfriend while his head tilted to the side. He didn't even have to ask what Pure Vanilla had seen because his menu was soon shoved into his face.

“LOOK!!! Oh my— I haven't eaten this since I was a child!!” He laughed, pointing at a picture of a burger. “Bear Jelly Burgers!! They used to be my favorite! Oh wow — I didn't know places still made them!” He told his boyfriend, words spilling in an excited waterfall. “Ahhh!!! They even give it a cute bear face!!! My love!! We must order this!”

Shadow Milk's face cracked into a smile — he was pretty sure this was the first time he had seen Pure Vanilla so excited about food.

“I'll get one too then, since you praise it oh so highly!~” he responded, fanning the fire that was his beloved's pure and genuine excitement.

Pure Vanilla wasted absolutely no time waving down the waiter, ordering three Bear Jelly Burgers — wait three?

Shadow Milk squinted a little, briefly looking around. Surely there wasn't going to be an unexpected guest right? It'd be rightful karma for what he had done that morning in the inn ,, but he just wanted a little date with his boyfriend! Alone!! He did so well socializing earlier!!

“Three?” He asked finally.

“...”

“Why three?”

“...”

Honey.”

Boom. Critical hit. Pure Vanilla who rarely called Shadow Milk by his actual name, preferring to use sweet pet names… was horribly weak to them. Every time his boyfriend would call him one he'd fold to his will like a well crafted paper crane.

“... I thought we could share the third one… we might not get to eat right away when we get home..” he admitted sheepishly. Despite his innocent expression — his blue and yellow eyes pierced right through the beast, intentions clear.

It almost made Shadow Milk's head fall off of his palm at the look. How could he manage such an objectively cute expression while staring at him with a look that said — a lot of stuff.

“Anyways!! I'm so excited for you to try it! I hope you like it!” Pure Vanilla changed the subject, closing his eyes

“Mhm.” Shadow Milk hummed, still feeling quite complicated about what he had just witnessed. Was he the beast of deceit or was it his boyfriend?!

While they waited for their food at some point Shadow Milk had taken off his crown, admiring the flowers again. To think a child could make this! Admirable!

“Daisies signify new beginnings.” Pure Vanilla commented while gazing at his boyfriend. “It's quite fitting, isn't it?” He smiled warmly.

“I’m well aware.” Shadow Milk replied, he was the fount of knowledge — of course he studied flower language. “Freesias can mean friendship and trust — I highly doubt that the child knew this.” He shrugged nonchalantly, as if it didn't make his very soul warm up.

“Then let's call it a happy coincidence.” Pure Vanilla said, his attention being taken by the waiter who had brought them their drinks.

A happy coincidence.

Shadow Milk carefully touched the flowers with his claws, afraid that he might accidentally break them. He knew he wanted to preserve the flower crown — he was just unsure of how. Yes, he could use the same spell he had used on Pure Vanilla’s hair pin but that wouldn't quite hit the same, would it? If he could only make these flowers last forever.

Hm…

Shadow Milk placed the flower crown back on his head, letting it get absorbed by the eager blue and black strands of his hair — keeping it nice and secure. Once they come home he will have to look through their library. He vaguely remembered a flower preserving spell from way back in the day.

His eyes slid to his beloved’s golden staff.

It'd be easier to remember the spell if the staff was still the same as the day he had made it.

Just then, their food arrived, making Pure Vanilla basically bounce with excitement. Hehehe!!!

“LOOK!!! THE FACES!!!” he squealed, taking his burger close to his face to admire it properly. The burgers naturally had wonky, goofy teddy bear faces on them — it really was charming.

But that wasn't the thing Shadow Milk was currently admiring, no. It was Pure Vanilla and his laughter. Usually, as an ancient hero and a former king he held an air of kindness and elegance. The beast had seen first hand what kind of poise he'd adopt when talking to people — even with his closest friends. But like this? When it was just the two of them, alone?

That's when Pure Vanilla could let loose.

He could let his inner laughter be heard, let his eyes shine with happiness that was usually carefully controlled.

Shadow Milk wasn't the only one who came a long way — they both did.

Pure Vanilla took a big bite of his Bear Jelly Burgers, instantly letting out a small, audible moan at the taste. So so so good!!! It was even better than he remembered!!! His eyes quickly slid to his beloved who was busy staring at him.

“Try it. It's so good!!” He urged after he swallowed, making the beast blink a couple of times. What were they doing again? Right. Eating. Food. Food good enough to make Pure Vanilla let out that noise. Bear jelly.

Shadow Milk looked down at his Bear Jelly Burgers, taking a bite. He tore a piece with his long fangs, chewing at it slowly. It was good!!

“Do you like it??” Pure Vanilla asked eagerly.

“It's very good! We should make them at home too.” He affirmed, tearing another bite with his sharp teeth. Wait, why was his boyfriend staring at him now? Was he eating wrong?? Did he have something on his face?!

Pure Vanilla was, unbeknownst to him, admiring those pretty, sharp teeth of his. All of Shadow Milk's teeth were sharper than a normal person's but what really stood out were his longer, thicker fangs. He knew… intimately what kind of damage they could make. And they were sparkling so prettily in the sunlight! He hummed to himself once before going back to eating with a happy smile.

WHAT WAS THAT?!

Shadow Milk was going to go insane if he doesn't figure it out right now. He didn't like being out of the loop! But every time he tried speaking to his dumb, pretty boyfriend he was ignored. Not on purpose of course but rather because Pure Vanilla was far too gone in enjoying his food. He felt like he was on a Bear Jelly Island of happiness and joy — Shadow Milk was there too he guessed.

“I think you love that burger more than me.” Shadow Milk finally got his attention, making him drop the last bite onto his plate. His eyes went wide with horror in an instant.

“THAT'S NOT TRUE!!” He defended himself fervently.

Haha. Got him.

“I don't know…”

“IT'S NOT!!! I LOVE YOU MORE!!!”

“You moaned for that burger…”

“...”

“You used to only moan for me.” He sighed dramatically, theatrically placing his wrist on his forehead.

“MY LOVE NO!!! I SWEAR IT WAS AN ACCIDENT!!” Pure Vanilla pleaded, just about to jump out of his seat.

“That's what they all say….” He shook his head, brushing away a fake tear. “Maybe I should leave… you'll have a happier life with Bear Jelly burgers…”

And up! There he goes. Pure Vanilla stood up, walking next to the dramatic beast — his knees dropped on the ground, making even Shadow Milk blink in surprise. His hands reached up, and clutched Shadow Milk's clothes.

Two could play this game!

“If you leave I'll never forgive myself… I'll never eat Bear Jelly Burgers again!” He pleaded, trembling his bottom lip as if he was about to cry. Pure Vanilla had caught onto his beloved spiel somewhere in the middle — deciding in that moment that it was the best to fight fire with fire, of course.

“I—” Shadow Milk stuttered, completely caught off guard.

“Don't leave me! Please.. my love…” he continued, suddenly letting his head drop into the beast's lap.

“I won't …— Pure Vanilla..” he spoke in a far softer, apologetic tone “..— I was just jok— OW??? WHAT THE HELL!” he gasped, when he felt his thigh suddenly get chomped on— OW??

Pure Vanilla looked up with a pleading expression but his eyes were nothing but wicked! Evil!!!

“It's my solution.. I'll just eat you instead!” He batted his white lashes at his boyfriend making the other flush all over in an instant, to the point his pointed ears gave a couple of twitches.

YOUUU!! OFF!! SHOO!! BEGONE!!” he exclaimed, playfully shoving Pure Vanilla's head away from his poor, poor lap.

Pure Vanilla sat back down but he wasn't laughing, no, instead he looked incredibly smug. Another win for him, a delicious one too. The two of them stared at each other for a prolonged moment of silence before his expression finally broke and he grinned outwardly, pointing the tip of his tongue which rested between his teeth at Shadow Milk in a childish way.

THE AUDACITY!?

Shadow Milk was going to get back at him for this!! He had been about to reach over the table and grab that stupid tongue of his but before he could the waiter had passed by to check on the two of them — instantly Pure Vanilla's dumb, handsome, smug expression shifted into the elegant politeness he wore around others.

The two of them are the rest of their meal in comfortable silence — aside from the beast's glares that Pure Vanilla chose to ignore. They did at the end share the third burger as well. Shadow Milk tore it in half with his claws, giving the bigger piece to his delighted boyfriend.

“Wow, I'm stuffed. I don't think I can ever eat again.” Pure Vanilla exhaled, leaning back on his chair with a satisfied smile.

“Uh huh.” Shadow Milk replied, unimpressed. He didn't even try to tease him, he knew exactly where that would lead too and honestly he suffered far too many loses in such a short amount of time — it was bad for his ego!

“I'm gonna go pay and then let's go to the flower shop, okay? I have an order I gotta pick up!” Pure Vanilla smiled, getting up. He didn't go right away, instead taking a moment to give his boyfriend a sweet kiss before walking away with a far too cheerful step.

Why was he so annoyingly cute all the time?

Shadow Milk needed a big win — and soon. Or he might as well lose his mind before they get home.

Notes:

I love these silly guys so much wtf. Also no updates probably for a few days because I'm visiting my family and can't afford to use up my usual writing time (3-5am)

Also to the people who caught on — there's a little sneak peak of a fic I'll write after this one. I'll only give you all a title for now tho "In every lifetime, only you."

Also also a moment of appreciation on how my chatting downgrades exponentially compared to when I'm writing
