Work Text:
I stood in front of the desk in my and Jay's shared hotel room, studying the footage on his laptop. I squinted at the screen with my arms crossed, the brightness on his laptop cranked alllll the way up and starting to hurt my eyes a bit.
The door to the room opened and I glanced up. Jay stumbled in, covered in sticks and dirt and looking exhausted. I felt my eyebrows pull together, but he waved me off. He peeled off his chest mounted camera and tossed it onto the bed, mumbling something about a shower.
I turned back to the laptop screen and continued scanning through the footage, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Water running in the bathroom joined the quiet, comfortable collection of noises in our little room - the laptop fan humming gently, the window ac rumbling, the muffled voices from the cooking show that was playing on a low volume on the tv - and I sighed, feeling slightly on edge despite the calming situation. That was the issue with tagging along with Jay, I was always at least a little antsy.
I shivered for what seemed like the millionth time today. I also found myself wishing I had brought a sweater or jacket for the millionth time today.
The bathroom door squeaked open behind me and I heard Jay clear his throat. I saw his reflection in the screen in front of me just before he placed his hands on my shoulders.
"Hey," I said softly, pausing the video and turning my head to look at him. He looked even more exhausted than when he got back, eyes barely open and posture drooping.
He rested his chin on my shoulder and reached around me to play the video again. "You find anything interesting?" He murmured, teeth clamped together from resting his chin on me. He lazily put his hands in the front pockets of my jeans as he spoke.
"Nothing too out of the ordinary - some static and distortion, but nothing huge." I tipped my head until it rested against his, feeling my own eyes growing tired. I shivered again.
He seemed like he noticed this, and removed his hands from my pockets to wrap his arms around my middle and pressed his face into the crook where my right shoulder meets my neck. He was wearing a T-shirt, so I could feel his skin - still warm from the shower - against mine.
He sighed sleepily, and I hesitated a moment before peeling his arms off of me. His face instantly retreated from my neck. "Oh- sorry, I felt you shiver, so I was just-"
I turned around and wrapped my arms around him. He wasted no time doing the same, face now tucked in the crook of my neck on my left side this time. He held me close to his chest and I sighed this time, feeling significantly less anxious than I had in weeks.
