Ginny sighed and unenthusiastically surveyed the chess board. Ron had shown up to her flat grumpy and not wanting to talk about why, so she had decided to indulge him with a chess match, hoping the opportunity to smash through her underused chessmen would improve his mood. It wasn't doing the trick so far, however, despite his inevitable march towards victory.
She looked up at another knock on her door. "Come in," she said carelessly, knowing that the ward Hermione had crafted would be repelling anyone who meant her harm.
The door opened to reveal Luna, who wore an expression that suggested she was either genuinely puzzled about something or merely hoping to deceive some wrackspurts. "Good morning," she said brightly, briefly glancing at Ron. "I didn't realize that you already had company."
"It's fine." Ginny beckoned her in, glad for a distraction that was far more pleasant than a lopsided game of chess.
"Good morning, Luna," Ron mumbled, barely glancing up at her.
"Good morning, Ronald," Luna replied pleasantly, perching beside Ginny on her couch. "I imagine that you're winning the game?"
"Yeah," he muttered, attention back on the board.
"Don't mind him," Ginny said lightly, "he's being a grump this morning. Can I get you anything?"
"I would like some water, please."
Ginny got up and went to her small kitchen, filling two glasses with water and returning to find Ron and Luna sitting in silence, Ron ignoring her. "So what brings you here?" she asked as she handed Luna her glass, sitting down and taking a long sip from her own. Ron didn't get any if he was going to behave like this.
"Well..." Luna briefly glanced at Ron as she took a small sip of water, then put down her glass and turned fully to Ginny. "I had sex with one of your brothers last night."
Ginny proceeded to douse her poor chessmen with the water she had just ingested. "What?"
"It was either Fred or George, but they're rather difficult to tell apart."
"You still can't tell the twins apart?" Ginny focused very carefully on that rather than on the fact that Luna had just slept with one of her brothers.
Luna waved off the question. "We were drunk," she said by way of explanation. "And he had already left by the time I awoke this morning. The only thing I distinctly remember is that he had a large mole on his hip, right here." She pointed to her right hip bone. "I was rather hoping you would tell me which of them has such a mole."
Ginny sighed and held her cold glass to her warm face. "I hate to have to tell you this, Luna, but I'm sadly not in the habit of memorizing what my brothers look like without clothes on."
"Oh... I just thought you might have glimpsed them over the years and could tell. Don't siblings sometimes see each other naked?"
"We prefer to block those occasions out from memory," Ron grumbled, his red face firmly directed at the chessboard.
"What he said," Ginny muttered.
"Oh, I see. Well, this conversation has proven less enlightening than I hoped. Could I use your loo, Ginny?"
"Certainly." Ginny gestured towards the bathroom, and shook her head once Luna was gone. Turning to Ron, who was still staring very determinedly at the board, she snapped her fingers in front of his face. "Hey, lover boy."
Ron cringed away from her hand. "Could you not do that?"
"Neither Fred nor George has a mole on his hip."
"No..."
"But you do."
"I'd really prefer to forget that you know that."
"Why did you leave before she woke up? And why are you so grumpy this morning if you got laid last night?"
"Because we were drunk!" he blurted. "And you heard her, she wishes it were one of the twins!"
"That isn't what she said."
He scoffed. "That's how it always goes. They always wish that I were Harry, or Fred or George, or even bloody Neville. I'm never the one who they really want."
Ginny sighed. "You should have at least stayed until she awoke."
He shook his head. "It's better this way. Let her go on thinking that it was one of the twins. She'd just be disappointed if she learnt the truth."
"And what about you? I've seen how you look at her. Do you think I don't know what last night must have meant for you?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Your feelings matter. Tell me what you want."
"You know what I want."
"Then tell her the truth. Tell her what last night meant for you, alcohol or no alcohol. Tell her that you want to do it again, but properly this time, taking her out for a fancy dinner and a stroll along the river and escorting her home at the end of the night."
"Are you finished? I appreciate it, Gin, but I'm really not in the mood for getting shot down this morning."
"You're an idiot."
"That was a quick reversal."
"She already knows, Ron." She watched his eyes go wide. "She's just giving you an opportunity to tell her yourself. Do you know how many times I've gotten smashed with Luna and she's remembered every single detail of every embarrassing story I told her? She doesn't black out. She doesn't forget things. She absolutely knows that you're the one who shagged her last night and she's trying to get a sense of how you feel about it without embarrassing you."
He stared at her. "So she's just messing with my head?"
"That's not what I said."
The door of the loo opened, and Luna emerged, humming softly to herself.
"So, Luna, did you have a nice time last night," Ginny asked leadingly, "even if you can't remember which of my brothers you were with?"
"Oh, yes, it was perfectly lovely. And whoever I was with was an excellent shag."
Ginny restrained her grimace. She should have known to expect that last part.
"Really?" Ron asked, brightening.
"Yes," Luna replied lightly. She returned to the couches, sitting beside him rather than Ginny. "Did you have a nice time, Ronald?"
He froze. "So you do know."
"Yes. I wish you hadn't left so early. It would have been nice to spend the morning with you."
"You... would want that?"
"Yes. I went by your flat, but you weren't there, nor were you at Harry and Hermione's, so I assumed you must have come here to talk to your sister about it."
"If only," Ginny muttered.
"I..." Ron's jaw flapped uselessly for a long moment. He was still terrible at saying this next part. "I'm sorry."
"It's quite okay, so long as you make it up to me. I believe that Ginny just put some ideas in your head for how you might do that."
"You would want to..."
"To date you? Yes, Ron, I would like that very much."
Ron was gobsmacked.
"Ginny, would you mind terribly if I were to snog your brother in front of you? That appears to be the only way to get through his skull that I would not prefer to be with someone else."
Ginny huffed and stood. "I'll just be in my room," she told them, turning away as a surprised hum from Ron told her that Luna had commenced with the snogging.
