Fever Nightmares

Work Text:

Leyla knew that it was better for her to just sleep through the night and not bother Fier while she was sick with the flu. After all, if Fier needed something, she would let her know. But the very need to check up on her kept eating at Leyla, and she had no choice but to get out of bed and check up on Fier in order to quell the thoughts in her mind.

She walked down the halls, flashlight in hand, and opened the door to the guest bedroom. “Hey, my love,” Leyla said quietly as to not startle Fier, “I just wanted to check up on you. Are you doing okay?”

When Leyla came closer and got a better look, she saw Fier tossing and turning in bed, while whimpering and murmuring something that Leyla couldn’t understand. She gently put a hand, on her shoulder, gently asking, “You doing okay there?”

Fier suddenly bolted upright and looked around, trying to catch her breath. “Where am I? Wh-Where am I?” Fier asked, frightened as she looked around, trying to make sense of her surroundings.

“Shh, it’s okay, it’s okay, you’re in the guest bedroom right now, you’re okay.” Fier seemed like she was starting to calm down as she held her hand. “Deep breaths, dear. Deep breaths.”

Fier squeezed Leyla’s hand while taking deep breaths, trying to ground herself back into the reality of the waking world. She looked around again, and saw Leyla right there in the dark, sitting right by her bed. Fier, having come down from her panic, started to cry, pulling Leyla in for a hug and crying in her chest. Leyla returned the hug, stroking Fier’s hair as she did. The warmth and comfort of her girlfriend hugging her and cooing sweet nothings an pet names to her helped Fier calm down some more, and when Leyla wiped her tears away, she gave her a little smile.

“I saw you tossing and turning around in bed. Was something going on? We’re you too hot? Too cold?”

”I think I was too hot, and it might’ve caused me to have a nightmare.”

”What happened in it?”

”I don’t know. It was all a bunch of weird colors, patterns, shapes. And there were all these loud and grating noises. I don’t know what was happening, could barely comprehend what was happening.”

Leyla pet Fier’s head gently. “Is everything okay now?”

“Should be. Until the next nightmare strikes. Must be something this fever is doing to me.”

Leyla raised an eyebrow, then hugged Fier again. “Hold on, I’ll be right back.”

Leyla left the room, leaving Fier wondering what Leyla was going to grab. She laid back down for a moment, but didn’t dare to close her eyes.

Leyla came back with her stuffed tanuki, giving it to Fier. “Here. You can cuddle with Miko while you’re resting up.”

”Huh? Miko? But she’s yours. I can’t cuddle with something that’s so special to you.”

”It’s okay. It’s only for a few days. And I’ve been feeling pretty good, so I can manage. And soon I’ll try to find a stuffed animal of your own to give as a gift. For now, there’s only Miko, and I don’t mind sharing for a few days. Now get some rest, dear, and let Miko help you calm down and protect you from nightmares.”

Fier, now reassured, looked up at Leyla and smiled before hugging Miko close to her and falling asleep. Leyla smiled, brushing some of Fier’s hair away from her face. “Sleep well, dear.” Leyla whispered before leaving the room.

Fier looked over at Miko again, feeling the stuffed tanuki against her. She hugged Miko tight and let herself fall asleep again.

And throughout the rest of the night, Fier didn’t have any more nightmares.
