In the Sunshine

Summary:

It's Sunny and Jake's anniversary. Sunny decides to surprise her husband with just how far they've both come.

Notes:

Written for Flufftober Day 1: Anniversary

Work Text:

Sunny checked her appearance in the mirror one last time. Her makeup was immaculate, her hair was perfectly styled, and her outfit was on point.

All she needed to do was walk out the door.

She took a steadying breath and turned the door handle. This would be her longest trip outside without Jake, but she felt like she was ready for it.

Besides, it was a special day. Her husband deserved a nice surprise.

-------------------

Jake rubbed his forehead and clicked to the next page of his report. He should not be this tired so early in the day. It was barely even lunch and he was already exhausted and ready to crawl back into bed with his wife. Instead, he’d gotten another case tossed on his desk before he even finished the report for the last one and he was starting to get worried he wouldn’t be home in time to celebrate their anniversary.

His phone started ringing and he smiled when he recognized Sunny’s ringtone. “Once again, you’ve called me just when I needed a pick me up,” he said as he answered.

“It’s my superpower.” She giggled. “Are you busy?”

“Not with anything I can’t take a break from.”

“Good. I wanted to treat you to lunch.”

Jake glanced at his watch. “I can be home in about 20 minutes.”

“Alright. See you then. I love you.” She made a kissing noise before she hung up and Jake put his phone away with a small smile on his face.

He announced he was going to lunch and waved off Tess’ offer to join him. He found himself whistling softly as he headed out of the office and down the stairs. Sunny never failed to make him feel better, even on his worst days.

As he exited the building, he fished his keys out of his pocket and pushed the button to unlock the car. When he looked toward the beeping, he froze.

Sunny was sitting on the hood of his car, smiling bright and waving at him. “Surprise! I came to get you.”

“Sunny….” He walked toward her wrapped her in a hug. “What- What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see you,” she murmured, resting her head on his chest. “It’s our anniversary; I thought we could do something special.”

Sunny wanted to see him. Sunny wanted to do something special. Sunny went outside, by herself, in the middle of the day, to take him to lunch.

“Are you doing okay?” he asked softly, kissing the top of her head.

She nodded. “I was a little freaked out earlier, but I’m okay now.” She tilted her head up to look at him. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” He kissed her properly, resting his hands on her waist. “Where are we going for lunch?”

Sunny paused and her eyes widened. “Um…. I didn’t actually think about that….”

He chuckled softly and kissed her forehead. “Good. I can finally drag you to that food truck court.”

Her nose wrinkled but she nodded. “I guess if that’s what you really want…..”

“Nothing would make me happier than seeing you eat a taco that costs less than $5.”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re lucky I love you.”

“I know.” He kissed her again. “Happy anniversary.”

Her smile returned. “Happy anniversary.”
