Work Text:

Gore. And not just blood, bile. Hair. Substances Moiraine could not begin to understand.

Drying out. Becoming jelly, flakey, or stiff as a board.

Every Trolloc, every Fade, every human body was a reminder.

Living beings were carrion in skin shells, rotting water over snappable bones, meat if they lost and lost if they won.

This was Moiraine's fifth ‘first battle,’ and it did not get better.

Moiraine stood staring out over the ground, thinking of how her uncles had brought this to the world for no good reason. This was a good reason. The very best any reason could be to bring this sort of carnage. So Moiraine brought it.

And then stared at what she had done.

All the while, her Warder watched her.

While he felt intricate undefinable unstable things behind a face that seemed to feel nothing at all.

“I…” she tried. “We…”

She could not. She must. This was important. She must offer Lan words and a chance to speak them, as a care for him.

“How are you?” She croaked.

Lan grunted and then turned to face the carnage. “Let’s make a pact, Aes Sedai.”

“Yes?”

“Neither of us has to talk if we don't want to.”

How would she know if he wanted to talk? How would she even know if she herself wanted to talk? “Agreed.”
