Work Text:

In the comfort of their quiet house is the Noceda family, all of them in the slumber of their sleep.

Luz and Vee are in their respective places in the bunk bed—the basilisk in the top and the young witch at the bottom.

Vee is sleeping soundly.

However, her eyelids slowly squeeze tight, and her breathing becomes erratic.

Then, she hastily opens her eyes and…

She lets out a horrified gasp.

She is in the last place she wants to be.

She is back to her… cage.

Vee looks down and notices the iron shackles locked on her wrist.

The basilisk breathes heavily, curling inwards.

“No, no… Not a-again.” Vee whispers, feeling a panic attack coming.

“V-Vee?”

Her breath hitches when she hears that soft voice.

She knows it.

She knows it very well.

On the other side of the cage is her sister, Luz.

She is in the same condition as her, shackles wrapped around her wrist.

“Luz?” Vee calls out, slithering towards her.

But it is no use as the chain pulls her back.

Luz slowly wakes up from her slumber, sitting up from the cold, stone ground.

Her eyes go wide, a hint of fear from within. “Vee? W-Where are we?”

“I-I…” Vee stammers.

Suddenly, the door opens with a loud swing, making the sisters jump.

Vee gasps again.

Warden Wrath steps inside along with a Coven Scout, holding a long rod with an electric tip.

“Let’s do this again, should we?”

Vee whimpers, shaking and immediately hiding herself.

“Hija de puta!” Luz shouts back in anger, pulling her chains. “I swear to Titan! If you hurt my sister, I’m going to—“

Wrath interrupts Luz with a menacing scoff. “Cute. The human really cares for her “sister,” huh? How about we put that to the test?”

Vee’s eyes go wide in fear at the implication. “No! Please don’t hurt her! I-I’ll do anything, please. J-Just don’t hurt her!”

Wrath slowly walks to Vee and leans towards her, making her body shake.

“Where are they? Where are the other basilisks, Number Five?”

“H-Huh?” That is all Vee says.

She is so confused about that question.

She has no idea what he is talking about.

But it looks like Wrath wasn’t satisfied with the answer as he nods at the Coven Scout.

Without hesitation, he charges up the rod and firmly strikes towards Luz’s ribs, electrifying her with a harsh pulse.

She lets out a painful scream.

“No! Stop! Please, stop!” Vee yells out, tears already down at the sight of her sister getting hurt.

The scout presses the rob more harshly, making Luz scream even louder.

“Stop! Please!”

Then, he removes the rod with the electric tip sparking out.

Luz’s body lands on the floor with a thud, smoking and breathing heavily.

“Luz!” Vee cries out, looking at Wrath with her hands together, praying. “Please don’t hurt her. H-Hurt me instead. P-Please.”

“Where are they?!” Wrath yells at Vee’s face, making her flinch.

“I-I don’t know! I swear to Titan, I don’t know!” Vee lets out trembling sobs, choking on her breathing. “P-Please!”

“Not good enough.”

“No! No! Don’t!”

It is too late as the scout activates the rod again and electrocutes Luz.

The loud, painful screams continue.

And Vee is powerless.

She can’t do anything other than to scream out loud, begging them to stop hurting.

This goes on for several minutes until…

Her whole body gives up, her face coming into contact with the floor, her skin pale.

Vee sees the dilated pupils with her brown eyes, always filled with warmth.

Well, they are now filled with nothing as Luz lets go of her last breath.

Her sister is dead…

Vee stares at the sunken body for several minutes, in shock and tears running down her cheeks.

Then, she lets out a blood-curdling, anguished scream.

“Vee…”

“Vee…”

“Vee!”

Vee wakes up with a yelp, immediately curling herself in the corner of her bed.

“Hey, hey. It’s okay. It’s okay.”

A soft, reassuring voice is heard.

Vee recognizes it.

She knows it so well.

Right in front of her is her sister.

She is on her knees with her hands raised up, showing that she means no harm.

”L-Luz?” Vee whispers, a tremble in her voice. “I-Is that you?”

“Yes, it’s me, Vee.” Luz nods with a small smile.

“Luz!” Vee chokes, immediately tackling her sister in a tight hug.

Luz is caught off guard, but she relaxes at the embrace, weaving Vee’s hair and rubbing soothing circles on her back.

“I-I thought I-I lost you…” Vee hiccups, her voice muffled on Luz’s neck.

“I’m right here,” Luz whispers softly. “It’s okay. Everything is okay. It was just a nightmare, Vee.”

Vee nods shakily and squeezes her sister even tighter, sobbing on her shirt.

She continues to spill her tears for the next few minutes, with Luz saying nothing but comforting reassurance in her ears.

She even hums a Spanish melody her Mama uses to sing to her, which helps Vee a lot.

Soon after, Vee’s tears finally calm down, and she slowly removes her face from her sister’s neck.

“I’m sorry about your shirt…”

“Don’t worry about it, hermana,” Luz says, wiping the shredded tears that stuck to Vee’s cheek with her hand.

It is quiet for a few moments as Vee slowly gets her breathing under control.

“Do you wanna talk about it?” Luz asks timidly.  “Your nightmare?”

Vee immediately shakes her head, eyes squeezed shut. “N-No…”

“Okay, that’s okay. Do you want me to stay here?”

“Please.” Vee grabs her sister’s wrists, her eyes begging her to stay. “Please stay.”

“Okay, I’m staying…”

And true to her word, Luz stays there and sits beside the basilisk.

Vee slowly rests her head on Luz’s shoulder, letting a soft sigh.

Luz wraps her arm around Vee’s shoulder, continuing the process of rubbing gentle circles with her thumb.

Slowly, the heavy weight of the nightmare is gone, the atmosphere turning into one of warmth and light.

Then, Vee starts dozing off.

However, she forces herself to stay awake.

She is afraid she is going to see that nightmare again.

Or maybe a new one.

Luz notices this.

“You wanna uhm… you wanna go back to sleep or…?”

“I-I…” Vee stutters, hugging herself. “I don’t want another…”

She doesn’t finish her sentence.

But her sister already knows what she is putting down.

“What if I sleep here… With you?” Luz asks carefully. “Will that help you?”

Vee gently lifts her head to look at Luz.

Despite everything she has been through, Luz still has that same warmth within her brown eyes.

It is genuine, and Vee feels safer with her.

With a small nod, Luz and Vee slowly lie down on the bed.

Luz covers both of them with the blue blanket once she gets comfortable.

“You comfy?”

“Yes…” Vee whispers, staring at her sister.

Then, slowly, Luz pulls Vee closer to her.

Vee lets her head rest onto her chest, feeling her tail curl around her legs.

She closes her eyes with a soft sigh, breathing calmly.

“Thank you, Luz…”

Luz smiles softly, planting a kiss on her blue tuft of hair. “Of course, Hermana. Good night.”

“Good night…”

Slowly but surely, both of their breathing has finally calmed down, with Vee letting out soft snores.

Together, the Noceda sisters share a peaceful and blissful sleep with no nightmares to be seen.
