r/Fanfiction: Is RPF creepy?

So I’ve been writing Danny Phantom RPF and I give it to my brother to beta. He mostly criticizes the technical stuff and not the emotional stuff and the tropes, but this time when I gave it to him he said it was creepy because it was about a real person. I’ve always thought RPF seemed a little invasive. Personally, if someone I didn’t know wrote a fanfic about me, I would be weirded out. Of course, it’s not like I can stop you.

Eh, I’ve always been ambivalent about RPF. I don’t think I’m the best person to give advice, but I’d say it’s only creepy if your reasons for writing are creepy. Or if you’re writing a self-insert x a real person

Your real problem is that your OC is a poorly disguised self-insert Mary Sue character whose personality is a mishmash of tropes with no substance.

Danny sighed, heading home after a long day of ghost fighting. He walked into his house only to find Crystal Sparkie, his best friend since he was 5 years old, on his couch! She had brown hair with shimmery pink highlights and wore a flowery pink dress.

“What are you doing here, Sparks?” He asked, using his nickname for her. 

She flipped her head so she was upside down on the couch and giggled. “I don’t know, Danny. What am I doing here?” 

He walked over and sat on her legs because she was taking up the whole couch. “OW!” She said. 

“Oh my goodness gracious, I’m so sorry!” He leaped up and raced to the kitchen to get ice for her legs. 

“You know you didn’t sit on me that hard, right?” She said when he got back. “I don’t need ice. But you look super cute when you’re racing to my rescue.”

Danny blushed and sat next to her. She thought he was cute?? “I kind of think you’re cute too. I mean, you are cute! You’re cute too!” 

She giggled, her cheeks as red as his. “I think you should kiss me.”

“What? No–I couldn’t! I’m a ghost!” 

“That doesn’t matter to me. I want it to be us forever, you know? Sort of like how it has been, but better.” Her brown eyes were wide and watery, like liquid pools of hot chocolate with marshmallows for pupils. They kissed and everyone was happy. The end.

Chapter 3: Can’t Take It Anymore

He was free. Physically, that was. His wrists and ankles were still rubbed raw from the chains. His body still ached everywhere. He was hyperaware of the Y-shaped scar running from his chest to his abdomen. Counting the cracks in the sidewalk to distract himself only reminded him of all the cracks running through him. They knew he was hurting. They just didn’t realize how deep it ran. This wasn’t something he could come back from with a witty remark as he had so many times before. Breathing was hard. His insides felt all wrong. Felt . . . violated. 

Sinking down, he wrapped his arms around his knees. He didn’t care that he was blocking the path. What did it matter? What did anything matter? Now that he knew he could be taken away in a moment and tortured, experimented on, cut up like he wasn’t even human. He was. How could they not see that? Did they not hear his screams? His cries? Did they not see his tears? The blood welling up and his beating heart? 

His friends tried to understand. He supposed he was glad that it wasn’t them who had been taken, as they might not have survived. But they weren’t the ones who were sliced into like a frog in biology class and it showed. He rocked back and forth, whimpering. He was exposed, being outside. Maybe they would come take him away again. Maybe that’s what he deserved. He needed to get out. To replace his skin with one that had never been torn, bruised, bloody. He was dying. He was already dead. 

Abruptly, he stood up. He would run. Perhaps escape the thoughts. There was a forest not far from here. He strode down well-worn paths, trying not to think. He’d had enough of thoughts. Of accusations and whispers and rumors. He’d arrived at the forest and hardly noticed. Now he was running, running, running. Branches tripped him up and leaves blocked his view, but he didn’t turn intangible. He needed to feel this, to smell the earth and touch the rough bark of the trees. Sweat poured down his back and trickled into his eyes. Finally, he fell to his knees, his muscles aching. He couldn’t take it anymore. Couldn’t take the memories of scientists holding scalpels, of pain, pain, pain, of being so sore and bloody and sure he was going to fade out of existence, of the callousness he’d been treated with–

He was so, so scared that they were going to come for him again. He was so scared that this time, they wouldn’t let go. That they’d take him away and then take everything he loved. They were a branch of the government, after all. They could confiscate his family’s house, fire his friends’ parents from their jobs, do who knows what else–if they could take him in broad daylight with no one but his closest friends and family protesting, if they could strap him down and study him, treating him like a subject instead of a person . . . if they could do all that . . . 

Tears slipped out of his eyes. Soon he was full-on sobbing. His wails echoed through the trees. No one would hear him out here. That’s what he wanted, wasn’t it? No, a part of him whispered, you want them to come after you. To chase you down and tell you it’ll all be okay. 

His lip trembled. His hands shook. He shouted nonsense, his rage and grief and uncertainty and hurt all pouring out of him. He pounded the ground until his fists bled. He screamed, he cried, he whimpered. He curled into a ball and wished he could go back to a time when none of this had happened. Hate filled him. The desire to destroy those who’d done this to him overtook him for a few moments, but he knew it never could be. That wasn’t who he was. Besides, just thinking about them made him want to hide away forever. 

Laying on the forest floor, the only thing he knew for sure was that he had been forever changed. There was no going back. He’d cried his heart out and screamed his lungs to death and wished it all away, but none of it made a difference. It never would. And so he remained, an empty shell of who he once was.
