Work Text:

Lan Wangji entered the Jingshi and was greeted with silence. Expanding his senses led the dragon to their bedroom, where Wei Wuxian was napping with all nine of his tails exposed. Lan Wangji smiled when he saw why.

Wei Wuxian had agreed to babysit the other children today, so a little tiger, a crow, a dragon, and an eagle were each taking up two of his fox's tails, with the final one being used as a blanket, apparently. As for Wei Wuxian himself, the fox was spread out on their bed and snoring gently, completely trusting his tails to keep the children from wandering off.

Lan Wangji moved to the edge of the bed and cupped Wei Wuxian's face in his hand. Even in his sleep, Wei Wuxian moved to nuzzle Lan Wangji's hand.

If he were keeping with the rules, Lan Wangji would have moved to wake Wei Wuxian and the children. Instead, he carefully maneuvered himself to be under his mate and the children they were now watching together.

There were still several things that needed to be done, but they could wait until everyone had finished napping.

After a few minutes of lying under Wei Wuxian's comforting weight, Lan Wangji didn't notice his eyes slowly starting to drift shut. Before long, the soothing presence of naps had claimed another victim.

"-was a pleasure, Shijie! I insist the next time you and the peacock are here, you've got to let me babysit again!" Lan Wangji woke to the sound of their door sliding closed. He sat up just as Wei Wuxian walked back in. "Sorry, Lan Zhan. Didn't mean to wake you."

"Mn. Wei Ying didn't wake me."

Wei Wuxian moved towards the bed, "Still! It was such a nice surprise to wake up on top of my lovely husband!" He said as he flopped back to the position he'd woken up in, draped over Lan Wangji's torso.

"Wei Ying needs the sleep."

"And whose fault is that?" Wei Wuxian teased. The two of them sat like that for some time, just enjoying the feeling of finally being able to be together, after everything they'd gone through.

It was as they were eating dinner that night that Wei Wuxian asked the question, "Since a-Yuan is old enough to move into the disciple dorms..."

"Wei Ying?"

"Aiyah, it's nothing, Lan Zhan! I was just wondering if you maybe ever thought of giving a-Yuan a little sibling?"

Lan Wangji very carefully set his chopsticks down. "Is Wei Ying thinking about adopting another child?"

Wei Wuxian fiddled with his own set of chopsticks, "Well, you know I wouldn't say no to adopting another baby! But I was more thinking along the lines of one of our own?"

Lan Wangji reached over and held Wei Wuxian's hand, "Always want a child with Wei Ying. What brought this on?"

Wei Wuxian blushed, "Lan Zhan! You've got to warn me before saying things like that! My poor heart!" Lan Wangji waited patiently for Wei Wuxian to finish being so flustered, "Well... You know that my cycles have been messed up ever since the war, right?"

"Mn."

"And how we thought that all the stuff from the Burial Mounds might have just stopped the cycles completely, right?"

"Mn." Wei Wuxian played with the hand he was holding, and wasn't looking at Lan Wangji, so he used his free hand to tilt Wei Wuxian's face towards him, "What is wrong Wei Ying?"

"That's the thing Lan Zhan! Nothing's wrong! It's the exact opposite of wrong! I started nesting today. And it made me realize that my cycles weren't gone at all! And that made me think about giving a-Yuan siblings! But then I wasn't sure if you would even want to have more children because they are a lot work an-"

Lan Wangji cut Wei Wuxian's spiral off with a kiss. "Always want children with Wei Ying. It does not matter if they are children we bring into our home or children that we create together."

"Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian cried before diving into his husband's arms.
