You Look Just Like Her

Summary:

While watching Saturday morning cartoons, Connie sees a familiar face in the screen.

Chapter Text

“Nothing.”

Connie changed the channel.

”More nothing.”

She changed the channel. A title formed in rainbow letters, showcasing a bouncy flower and cartoon characters.

She blinked, then smiled. “There we go.” She turned her head. “GORDON! SYLVESTER! I GOT IT!”

Rebecca chuckled darkly. “Don’t kill it.”

”I’m not going to kill it, how would you even kill a cartoon?!” Connie snapped, failing to hide her growing grin.

Footsteps echoed from upstairs. She saw as two figures rushed down the stairs, one more short and excitable than the other. One was a mere child, with wild, curly black hair and a goofy smile. The other needed to take a shower. Badly.

”Yes!” Gordon cheered, flopping on the couch. “I love this show!”

”We know you do, pumpkin.” Rebecca mused. “You too, nerd.”

”I’ll have you know I was doing important research for my next renaissance act!” Sylvester huffed.

Connie rolled her eyes. “You say that every time, and then you don’t ever get plane tickets or learn to drive.”

Sylvester crossed his arms. “It would be very unrealistic for a knight to emerge from an automobile or aeroplane.”

”Airplane.” Rebecca corrected. “And say car. This isn’t the 60’s.”

”You know what I mean!” He turned around and stormed off. “Can’t a man love his passions in peace and stay realistic to those passions?! God!”

Connie snickered. She wasn’t paying attention to the cartoon Gordon was watching. To her, it was just background noise. She was much more interested in Rebecca, who was scribbling away on her sketchbook. Probably designing clothes, as usual.

They all lived in the same house. Connie and Sylvester owned it, and Rebecca and Ellen were housemates… except Gordon. His parents were on vacation, and since they knew Connie well enough, they thought it would be best to leave him to her. Now, she never planned on having any kids ever, but she’d do anything for the ragamuffin. Even if he was really annoying.

“Where is Ellen anyway?” Rebecca asked, adjusting her position.

”She’s still asleep!” Gordon chirped. “Shh! It’s a spring episode! A brand new one!”

Sure enough, one of those funny little object thingies showed up on screen. His favorite cartoon was full of creatures like this. The main one was a flower, but his friends were a moon, a shell, a strawberry, a TV, and a rock. A shrimp was often the bad guy, but sometimes they would all misunderstand each other without an antagonist around.

Today, it was an egg. On a bench, being greeted by… a flower basket? Ok, cool.

”Ah, hello Lassie.” The egg greeted.

”Bassie.” The basket corrected.

”What‘s itchin’ you? Something on your mind?”

Connie leaned closer to Rebecca, and she did the same. “Hey, is it just me, or does she sound familiar?”

”Might be a you problem. She sounds new to me.” Rebecca shrugged.

Maybe.

But Connie couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off with Bassie.

A long time ago, when she was a child, she remembered knowing someone named Bassie. She loved walking in gardens, and her dress was always decorated in floral or paisley patterns. She was the prettiest girl Connie ever knew. A shame they only met during the holidays…

So, how did this cartoon character sound like her?

How did this Bassie somehow embody everything Connie knew about the girl she once sung and dance with?

Clearly, something was wrong… or maybe this was a big coincidence. Who knew.

But Gordon was happy watching the television. Until now, Connie never had a reason to watch with him.
