What was a day for her was three months for Christofer and those other fifteen soldiers. Only two come back, him and a sergeant. He was different. It felt like he was hiding something. Kate didn't push. She didn't want to lose him.
Something killed the others. That's what he said. That's what the sergeant said. Kate had no reason to disbelieve them.
It's only in the dark, weeks later with his back turned to her does he open. Christofer told her the truth. How they survived. What they ate. Who they ate. Kate once had ended a relationship because she got annoyed by the way someone breathed in their sleep.
In youth she could afford to be picky, and end things for the most shallow reason. Kate was older now, and had successfully pushed everyone who cared away. The only thing that stood between her and loneliness was him.
So she stayed with him. They never spoke of it again. After all, she might have done the same had she been there. She understood the urge to survive.
Kate doesn't mention the blood stained clothes, or the meat in his fridge or the bodies found with flesh missing either.
