Six woke up to the unpleasant sensation of sand in every crevice. They sat up with a start to find themselves on a beach. In front of them there was ocean for miles and behind them there was jungle for miles. How the hell did she get here?? Six rubbed their head, the last thing she remembered was… the boat! Right! Nine had somehow persuaded Six to go on a boat ride. Nine promised something new and exciting, well this place was certainly new… They must’ve crashed here. Six stood up and immediately got hit with a head rush. They groaned and stumbled backwards.
“Yo! Six!!”
Six cringed as Nine glomped her. Six kicked her off which did nothing to deter Nine’s cheery attitude.
“I thought maybe you crashed onto a different island! So glad i’m not alone! Isn’t this island radical?”
They ignored his question and retaliated a more important question, “How are we getting home?”
“Oh, uhhh.” He adjusted his shades and glanced over at the broken shards of wood they once called a boat. “W-we’ll worry about that later yeah?” Six’s jaw dropped. “OUR BOAT!!! RUINED!! Now i’m stuck here with you.” Six pointed an accusatory finger and Nine gently pushed the finger down. “Relax! The fam’ll realize we’re gone and come and find us! In the meantime let’s enjoy this totally radical island!” Six watched them run off into the forest. She looked back at the “boat” and grimaced. Was anyone really gonna look for them? She remembered that one time when they came back disguised as Fifteen. Her brows furrowed as she recalled Seven saying they were sick of her. They were all probably relieved she was gone. Glancing back at Nine, they chuckled as they watched him get hit by falling coconuts. They might come looking for him, everyone seems to like Nine. How could they not? She was sweet, charismatic, and optimistic.
Six was snapped out of her thoughts by Nine calling out to them. He waved two coconuts in the air and moseyed right on up into Six’s space. Six awkwardly scooted away. She passed her one of the coconuts and a colorful straw.
“Drink up!”
“Oh, thanks…”
sipppp
“Wanna see me crush this coconut with my head?”
“W-what? uhm, no?”
“Oh okay, yeah that’s cool.”
Nine trailed their finger in the sand as the two of them sat in uncomfortable silence.
“Sunset sure is pretty,” Nine mused.
“mhm.”
Nine’s hand brushed against Six’s. She flinched and pulled her hand back. Nine mumbled an apology and curled his hands up to himself.
“I wish i brought my skateboard, I could be doing some sick tricks right about now.”
After a bit Six got up. “We better start building a fire, let’s look for twigs.” Nine nodded and followed them into the forest. The forest was noisy, humid, and dark. Birds and bugs chittered and squeaked in the trees above and the two jumped over wayward roots.
“Geez… kinda scary in here…”
“Don’t touch me Nine.”
“S-Sorry bro.”
Nine peeled his hands off Six and rubbed his sweaty palms on himself. Six stopped abruptly and Nine bumped into them.
“No need to go far, let’s collect some sticks and head back.”
The two trudged back with armfuls of sticks. They built a small stick pyramid, now time to light it. “Don’t worry, I got this!” Nine took off their shades and held them up. Nothing happened.
“What are you doing?”
“Starting a fire! I saw this in a movie.”
“You idiot! You need the sun!”
Six pointed at the sun barely peeking out of ocean. She pushed him aside and grabbed two twigs.
“This is how you do it…”
They watched intently as Six rubbed the twigs together. She eventually managed to make a small fire. Nine cheered and hopped up and down. Six couldn’t help but feel a little proud of herself. Nine pulled out a bag of hotdogs.
“WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE??”
Nine looked confused at her shocked face.
“From my pocket…?”
“What pocket?”
Nine held the packet to her chest, “Do you want one or….?”
Six sighed and gave her a nod. The two enjoyed a hot dog dinner. As much as you can enjoy a hot dog dinner… Nine yawned and laid back. Six scooted to the other side of the fireplace and laid down as well. Even with the fire it was starting to get cold. Six shivered and held onto themselves tighter.
“Hey Six?”
“Mh?”
“You cold?”
“A little, yeah.”
Nine was quiet for a breath or two and then spoke up again, “D’you think it could be a good idea to er,” Nine searched for a way to say cuddle without saying it, “lay near each other to be more warm?” Six thought on it before begrudgingly saying yes, it was going to get colder anyways and her teeth were already chattering. Six scooted back to Nine’s side. This was fine. The two had often been near each other, hell, one time they even shared the same body! Six couldn’t ever deny the butterflies they got in their stomach when Nine was near, and she hated that. She refused to accept the idea that maybe her feelings for Nine went beyond friendly. Their bodies slotted perfectly together. Nine tried putting his arms over Six and she pushed them off. So both numbers kept their arms to themselves. Six sighed and closed their eyes. Nine shivered and wriggled closer. Six didn’t object to that. This wasn’t so bad. She listened to the waves kiss the shore and Nine’s steady breathing. When he was sleeping Nine was kinda cute. kinda. The geek was still wearing their shades. Geez, he never took those off. Especially after that one venture where he lost them for a bit. Now she rarely saw them without shades. Not that she cared, if those dorky shades made Nine feel cool so be it. Six indulged in nestling her face into Nine’s chest. The rise and fall of her chest brought Six immense comfort. They happily dozed off.
Six woke up to Nine’s arms wrapped around them and vice versa. Her face went red and she started biting his arm.
“OW OW OW OWWW!”
Nine teared up at the rude awakening. She ripped her arm away from the biting number.
“Geez calm down! Take a chill pill man!”
Nine rubbed her arm and looked down at Six in bafflement. Six was unreadable, snuggling one minute and the next attacking her! Nine couldn't tell how Six truly felt about him and Nine was too scared of rejection to tell her how they truly felt. However that's how Six wanted it, the thought of being in a relationship was foreign and a little scary. Nine pouted at her. Six's face showed no remorse and they merely shrugged.
“Let’s look for breakfast.”
Nine didn't reply, her pout had turned into a glare. Six sighed, “Also i’m sorry. There. Happy?” Nine perked up again, geez, nothing can bring this guy down. Six admired him for it. Nine hopped up and ran ahead to the clusters of green.
“Found it!”
“Found what?”
Nine pointed to a banana tree.
“Breakfast!”
Six grinned, “Well that was fast.” Six skipped over to Nine and the tree and started jumping. Her little arms couldn’t reach the bananas above. They kicked the tree in frustration until a bunch fell into their arms.
“Hey Nine! I got th-“
Nine was no longer by their side, the dweeb couldn’t sit still for one minute. She looked back at the shore to see Nine fishing some driftwood out from the water.
“Check this out! Kinda looks like a skateboard huh? Say, what if i rode this on the waves!! Skating, but on the water!!”
Six raised an eyebrow.
“You mean surfing? That’s already a thing…”
“Oh yeah! Gnarly!!”
Six sat on the warm sand and started to peel a banana. They watched him attempt to ride the waves. She got a chuckle every time he biffed it. They bit into the sweet, soft banana and let out a happy sigh. Nine was right. This wasn’t so bad. In fact, she wouldn’t mind being deserted on this island for a little longer. She wouldn't mind being deserted with Nine for a little longer, just the two of them...
