Sunny didn’t usually walk to Kenzie’s place, but today was different!
Sure maybe Kenzie didn’t really like him but.. skill issue.
He sighed and looked over at the lake, smiling. He was probably close now, considering Kenzie’s place was near the lake.
He hummed a song that Adam had shown them, it had gotten stuck in his head. He didn’t know what song he just knew it was by some British people..
Sunny actually didn’t really like the British, apparently they’re mean and rude to other people. But the songs they make are usually pretty good!
He reached Kenzie’s house, he hadn’t actually been here recently. Not after he dumped fish on her and ran off..
Look, it was supposed to be a funny prank! They didn’t think he would wake up and lunge at him! To be fair it was deserved but still.
He walked up the path to the house, clutching his bag. It only had their notebook (full of poems of course, and song lyrics he wrote with Lindii.) and a couple candy bars.
He reached the door and knocked, tapping his foot against the ground.
“What.” Kenzie’s voice was sharp and annoyed, like he had interrupted the raccoon.
“Hey kenzieee..” They smiled, trying to change the mood on Kenzie’s face. It didn’t work so, did he even have any emotions?
“I’m busy, what do you want?” Kenzie seemed more.. annoyed than usual. “I just wanted to hang out with you! Have some.. girl talk?”
“..Sunny you aren’t even a gi-” Kenzie tried to say but Sunny cut him off. “Shhh… let me inside.”
Kenzie sighed but moved out of the way, which was a miracle considering Sunny didn’t wanna have to walk back home and go annoy Lindii.
“Your house looks… nice!” It didn’t actually, it looked like Kenzie hadn’t cleaned in ages.
“Shut up, I didn't expect any guests. It’s fine though, you eat trash right?” It wasn’t even a question, it sounded like Kenzie was telling a fact.
The raccoon shut the door and moved towards the lab, basically telling Sunny to follow him. Of course they did, not because he wanted to! Just because..
They entered the lab and it was more clean, just the tables were kind of messy. The red panda jumped up onto a clean one and sat on it, swinging his legs.
“Don’t get my place even dirtier, it looks like you rolled around in mud before you got here.” Kenzie huffed, crossing her arms. Sunny just sighed.
He looked around the room and noticed a robot on a table, while Kenzie was looking at something else he jumped down from the table and walked over.
The robot looked like it was in pretty good condition, but it definitely wasn’t finished yet. He reached over to one of the arms, trying to move it and-
Okay, he didn’t mean to break off the hand, it just accidentally happened! He screeched and quickly said sorry, covering his stomach out of reflex. He didn’t know what kind of reflex though.
Kenzie stormed over and pushed Sunny out of the way, checking on the robot before looking at the red panda.
“What the fuck did you do?! How have you been in this room for 10 seconds and yet have already broken something! Jesus christ you idiot i swear to-” He wasn’t even listening to Kenzie’s yelling, starting to feel tears run down his cheeks.
He said sorry, he didn’t even mean to break it, he just wanted to look at it properly. Imsorryimsorryimsorry-
“Sunny. Hellooo? Can you hear me?” Kenzie’s voice came back, Sunny’s head snapped up, he didn’t even realise he was full on sobbing now.
Kenzie noticed and stepped back, tensing up. What was she supposed to do? He barely even spoke to Sunny, only ever when they argued. And now they were having a full on breakdown over breaking her robot in his lab.
Sunny needed to just control his breathing, it was fine. Kenzie always yelled, but why did this seem so fam-
“Jesus Christ! Why can’t you just keep your hands to yourself?!” Dad yelled, picking up the pieces of the broken cup.
“I'm sorry dad- i jus-” Sunny tried to explain, tears running down his chubby cheeks. “Don’t you dare. You caused this mess, it’s your fault. What have I told you before?”
Sunny looked at the floor, muttering something. Dad grabbed his chin tightly, forcing him to look up at their dad.
“WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU BEFORE.” Dad screeched in Sunny’s face, making them sob harder. “I-if you caused the mess, then you don’t deserve food?”
Dad smiled gently and let go of Sunny’s chin, kissing his forehead which used to feel nice, now it just feels like burning.
“Good girl, now go to your room. I’ll tuck you in later okay?” Sunny nodded and ran off to his room, shutting the door and sliding down it.
He felt someone touching his knee, when did he even end up on the floor again? He couldn’t really remember.
He flinched away and let out a sob again, curling into himself.
“Sunny, can you hear me?” He swore he could hear Kenzie, but why was she being so gentle? Kenzie usually swore, or even yelled.
“I'm sorry- I didn't mean to break it, I just wanted to look at it-” He cut himself off with a shaky breath, it was like he couldn’t get any air inside his lungs.
“Okay- sun you need to breathe okay? I know it’s hard but you gotta breathe.” Sunny shaked his head, he couldn’t breathe. Kenzie’s arms were close to his arms, like they were stabilising him without touching them.
“Okay, put your head between your legs okay?” Kenzie guided his head down, suddenly not really knowing what to do.
Okay yeah in her human life (which by the fucking way, he did not think while Sunny was sobbing he would remember.) She was good at this, and had probably comforted Sunny before.
But their dynamic had totally changed, earlier he was literally yelling at them for breaking his robot (which she was still annoyed by but whatever, he’ll just fix it later) and now she was sat here comforting the red panda.
Sunny’s breathing seemed to have calmed down and now he was only letting out small whimpers. He lifted his head back up, uncurling slightly.
“Sorry i- i don’t know why i panicked there..” Sunny felt embarrassed now, he hadn’t meant to start crying. He still didn’t know what that flashback was, he guessed it was him but why couldn’t he remember it? And who was that dude in it?
“It’s fine, sorry for uh.. yelling at you.” Sunny felt Kenzie’s shoulder bump his, maybe as a way to be kind. It was a rare day when Kenzie act apologised, and it was usually done quietly.
All Sunny did was shrug and fiddle with his hands, which were actually starting to feel really weird. Like there was static underneath them, and like they weren’t his actual hands.
“Hey kenzie-” Sunny tried to say but when he looked over it was just nothing. It looked like those kinds of rooms from movies when the characters break the stimulation they’re in.
But Sunny wasn’t in a game was? He was real. He had just been next to Kenzie! He felt his hand feel weird again, he looked down at it and-
Oh.
Oh.
He wasn’t real. He never was. It was all just a lie.
He missed his friends.
