Chapter 1: clinic

Chapter Text

Blowing out the bright burning candles on the strawberry cake for Matt’s 15th birthday would have been more enjoyable— if not right after they would be going into the clinic to see what he would present as that same afternoon.

It was a ritual, but genuinely seemed ridiculous— Matt was a vampire, if he was anything but an Alpha— then something was wrong.

He could very definitely present as a Gen, given the chances are 75% Alpha and 25% Gen. But nonetheless, Matt didn't fight with his mother as he would end up getting in trouble.

It didn't make sense to Matt— why ruin their day of celebration to go to the clinic? His mother has reminded him time and time again that it's for accuracy, but Matt thinks that's bullshit.

The dreaded car ride was long and exhausting, even though he wasn't even driving or doing anything that would be draining. It was just that weird lingering feeling of something going horribly wrong.

After Nick had rubbed his shoulder like his nonexistent father probably wouldn't have, he entered the clinic and was immediately seated in a room.

The nurse started up with the basics, confirming his type— vampire or human.

“Vampire.” He said shakily.

“Why so jittery? It's clearly not excitement.” She says, grabbing the blood pressure cuff and strapping it to his left arm. “I can tell you're going to be an Alpha, no reason to worry.” She says, patting his head. “You remind me of a kid, Maverick.”

“It's just that feeling of impending doom, you know?” He says, playing around with his fingers.

The nurse froze for half a second— which could have meant nothing, but once she left the room after asking a few more questions and performing regular tests, Matt was even more terrified.

Maybe it was when vampires have a feeling, it's usually right. Matt tried to breathe, but then he pulled out his phone from his pocket and began texting his one friend.

nate

Matt: dude i'm scared as shit, im at the clinic bc its my birthday and ofc i need to do the thingy, but these people are being weird

Nate: maybe they are just stressed today, probably overloaded with other people needing to be presented, just chill man. im sure you're going to be fine.

Matt: what if something goes wrong? Nate. usually when vampires have a feeling it is right. i have a feeling something is going to go wrong.

Nate: bro. your fine. its just your overthinking brain taking over.

Matt: i rlly hope so.

Placing his phone back into his pocket, the doctor walks in. She introduces herself as Dr. Bella Cameron, and gives a rundown of what exactly is going to happen.

“So Matthew, or Matt?”

“Matt, please.” He says politely.

“Okay, Matt, so basically to do this test I'm going to place this pad on your arm, and you're going to tell me how much it hurts, if it hurts at all.”

“Oh, I thought you would be taking my blood or something.”

“That's what we do if the results don't seem accurate with this.” She says, taking a soaked white pad out of a jar.

She rolls up the sleeve of his t-shirt and places it in the middle.

“Give it about a minute.” She mutters, holding it there.

-

“Describe how your arm feels,” She says taking the pad off and wiping his arm.

“Uhm, tingly? Like it fell asleep?”

She sighs and opens a drawer to what looks like materials to draw blood.

“Either you're an Omega, which is one in 100 billion, or today the test with the pad isn't as potent today.” She says, tying a yellow latex strap around his upper right arm.

Matt's heart is racing, he almost can’t even breathe.

“This shouldn’t hurt.” She says, taking a syringe and filling it up halfway with his blood.

“How-how long will it take for the results?”

“About 5 minutes— it doesn't take that long.”

-

After thousands of deep breaths in through his nose, out from his mouth, Dr Cameron comes back into the room. Her face has noticeably paled, and she looks at Matt.

“There aren't any more tests that we need to do, we just have to certify into the system what you presented as.” Completely beating around the bush, she doesn't even make eye contact. “Come with me.”

Matt follows her down a hallway and is brought to a room that looks like an office, and she has Matt take a seat.

“So, I’m not that sure how to tell you.” She starts. “You're an Omega.” She says, blurting.

She almost frantically clicks and types on her computer, seemingly trying not to freak out.

“What-what?!” He says, his voice cracking.

“I have no idea what the chances of this type of thing are. You are probably the only living person who is a Vampire/Omega.”

Trying to repress all thoughts flying through his head, Matt stares at his lap and utters one little thing.

“What does this mean for me?”

“Okay, since you are a clash of two things that create the impossible, I cannot speak from experience, so I am going to try to guide you but I am assuming a lot.”

“Matt, to start, an Omega is a second, a lower and submissive to bond with an Alpha. You are possible to get pregnant. As for your personality, you are a male, so you tend to be emotionally intelligent but may struggle with social interactions and such.” Dr, Cameron takes a sip from her water bottle and then leans back into her chair.

“Second, you are a Vampire, which I’m sure your family has educated you on all of what they can about that-“

“I live with all Gens.” Matt interrupts.

“Well, then I must give the full rundown. You are immortal- of course, until you find all of the universe unfit, then you will be dead from our execution. But that's far, far, far, far, ahead of us, my lifetime, my 8th grandchild's lifetime, you know? So, you live off of blood- human blood, and you always need it.”

“Yeah okay I know about the blood part, obviously-“

“Okay so now I’m going to do my best to combine those too. You are probably going to be aggressively needy. If you are needy now, going back to school will make you even more insane for blood. Your fangs will probably start aching when you are without blood for too long, and I’m guessing you will find your Mate in the next week, the longest would be ten days.”

“What the fuck.”

Dr Cameron looked at him, and Matt looked lost.

-

Matt didn't say a single word to his mother or Nick. He refused, he was too ashamed. He let Dr. Cameron place the Omega carving on his arm where everyone else has theirs placed, and then he was out of there.

-

Running up a flight of stairs, Matt almost fell 5 times in a row, he slammed his door shut, and locked it. He finally let his tears stream down his face freely. He fumbled around in his pocket and pulled out his phone, searching for Nate's contact.

“Hi Matt-“

“Nate-nate, what do I do?” Matt asks through tears, he feels a panic attack coming along, and he doesn't know if he will survive this one.

“Matt, what happened?”

“Omega, I’m a fucking Omega, Nate, this isn't- this isn't fucking possible! I’m the only Vampire Omega.”

“Dude! Why are you freaking out? That's so cool!” Nate says, shouting.

“No-no it's not- I'm a freak! Nate- I'm going to be fucking bullied!” He yells back, then starts hyperventilating. “Fuck this.” He says, hanging up.

Matt's legs give out and he falls to the floor, no injuries were gained, but it was a loud thud.

Nick races upstairs and tries to open the door, but to no avail when he realizes the door is locked.

“Matt? Are you alright in there?”

“Nick-“ Matt says, “Please, I can't breathe.” Reaching for the doorknob, he clicked the lock and Nick immediately opened the door and saw Matt on the floor, completely a mess.

“Matt, what happened at the clinic?”

Sniffing, and trying to catch his breath, Matt pulls up his sleeve and shows the engraving of an ‘O’ on his shoulder.

“But- how?” Nick asks, gobsmacked.

“I-I, don’t fucking know- I don't fucking know- I don't fucking know-“ Matt repeats over and over, pulling the sleeve to cover the shameful truth.

He was an Omega. And he was going to have to live with it.

-

“So, are you different at all? Like do you relate to Omega or Vampire more?” Nick asks, watching Matt sip on a glass of unscented but sweetened blood.

“I'm supposed to be a lot more needy, and won't be able to be without blood for long amounts of time. I’m also supposed to find my Mate in the next 10 days.”

“Bro, that's insane, but like- like you’ll not have to wait forever for a match? Because for me my Mate will take forever, and I don't have a time frame. I’d say that's a plus.”

“But that means it will probably be someone from school. I hate everyone at school. Nick- you don't get it. I'm not suitable for being the only one in the whole world to be different. I don’t want to get bullied at school, I don't want to be thrown into corners and spat at, I don't want to be this.”

“Matt, if anyone bullies you, I'll personally kill them. I’m serious.”

“Nick, I’m not going to survive.”

“You will be just fine-“

“No-no-no-no, I can't be around Alphas already. Their scent is way too strong, now that I’m an Omega, I will not be able to hold back.”

“Wait, is your Mate going to be an Alpha?” Nick asks.

“Yeah, that's how it's supposed to go.”

“Matt, just don’t breathe when you're near them, and have a waterbottle of blood with you. You will be fine tomorrow at school, trust me.” He reassures, then leaves the room.

-

Lying in bed, Matt could not fall asleep. Having a girl as his Alpha would be embarrassing to him, and if it were a boy, if it was-

Matt sat up in bed and imagined all of the boys in his grade who were Alpha’s.

Now how come when Chris Owen came along his mind, felt at ease, and he lay down to finally rest?
