Chapter 1: Prologue: New York City, January 1976

Chapter Text

My Darling M,

I am sure this note will not reach you, as I certain the others have not, but I fear if I stop writing I will lose hope. You always said hope was more important than any other emotion in times of strife. I hold to that now, but if this is the last you hear from me, know that you were the last thing on my mind.

Whatever happens, live Highlander, grow stronger, fight another day.

All my love, always,

Your Vampire

The blood speckled letter crinkled in his hands, and Duncan took a moment to fold it properly. The paper, worn thin at the folds from the number of times he had taken it out to read over the years, was about three folds away from falling apart completely. He tapped the paper on his chin, then gave it a kiss over his own name scrawled there, before he put it back into its envelope again. Truth was, he had the message memorized, his flourished script etched on the back of his eyelids forever.

Steeling himself, he held the envelope over the candle flame until it caught, he held it aloft not letting go even when it singed his fingers, letting the ashes fall to the ground in an unsatisfactory manner. He looked around the room he had held onto far too long, knowing this would be the last time he stepped inside it. The sale had gone through escrow and was final now. The last remnant of his life with Methos was over.

“Goodbye my love,” he whispered into the empty room, tucking away his pain, as he had learned to do so well, and closed the door on his feelings.

It was time to move on.
