It was the end of August and here was Wei Wuxian, planning out his birthday. Is it still two months too early? Sure. But he’s turning 30. The big 3-0…THIRTY!!! He wants to pretend that it doesn’t bother him. Unfortunately, everyone around him can clearly see through him. HIs husband said that his 30th was no different than any other of his birthdays. Neither of the two ever took their looks too seriously. Wei Wuxian was always in awe of how flawless his husband looked, from the moment he woke up next to him to when he came back from work. Of course he wouldn’t be worried about lines and wrinkles any time soon, or at all for that matter! He’ll never understand how he married a literal god.
Lan Wangji will always refute Wei Wuxian’s statements, because to him there was no one more beautiful than his Wei Ying. The Wei Ying that broke down his walls in high school. The Wei Ying that stood up for him when he would get bullied. Come senior year, he turned that around and became that for his love. He shot up and bulked up over that summer. He heard some unsavory things about Wei Ying and he will never stand for such slander. Not to mention, this is the happiest Lan Wangji’s been. And his Wei Ying gave him the most special gift. Their baby boy, Lan Yuan. He loved them more than anything in this world.
Which is why it hurts Lan Wangji to watch his wife struggle to come to terms with turning this specific number. Even their precious child couldn’t get through to him.
“Mama is always pretty!”
Wei Ying smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes, which the taller man hated. His smile could rival the sun and should never diminish.
“I know you mean well, my sweet angel baby, but you can’t count to 30 yet.”
“Wei Ying.”
“I-I’m sorry.” Wei Wuxian stood up with A-Yuan in his arms, walking towards his husband. Placing his son in the other’s arms. “I didn’t mean anything by it.” He placed a kiss on his son's forehead and gave Lan Wangji’s lips a quick peck. “I’m going to Shijie’s for a little bit. I’m sorry.”
And with that, he was gone.
“What should we do A-Yuan?”
“Make mama happy!”
“Mn.”
Meanwhile down the block, Wei Wuxian was kicking himself. His family was just trying to cheer him up, why was he acting like this? He knew a bunch of 30 somethings and they seemed okay! Finally making it to his sisters, crossing his fingers the peacock wasn’t home. Thankfully he wasn’t. Actually no one was. Turns out Jin Zixuan dropped her off at Jiang Cheng’s. So, he took another trip. Doing what he does best, incessantly knocks on the door until his brother opens the door. After explaining things to his siblings, he was just pacing.
“A-xian! Just stop moving! You’re gonna put a hole in my floor and if you do that I’m going to bury you in it!”
Wei Wuxian stopped to stick his tongue out at his didi. “That just means you’ll just have to live with me!!”
“Not if I move, then you would be someone else’s problem.”
“SHIJIE!”
“Be nice, A-Cheng. He’s already someone else’s problem.” Came that sickly sweet voice.
“Why is everyone mean to me today!? I’m freaking out and no one cares!”
“Let me address something first, anytime you call me “shijie: I will take exactly one jab at you. We are no longer under mother’s roof. You call me JieJie or don’t call me at all. Understand?”
“Y-yes JieJie.”
“Much better, to address the other thing, you have two people at home that seem to support you and you just walked out on them because you were feeling sorry for yourself.”
“Way to lay it on thick, A-Jie.” Jiang Cheng said, coming to stand next to his big brother. Gently shoving his shoulder he said: “Get out of your thick stubborn head and focus on the party. You’ve been here for an hour and haven’t said a word about it…have you given up on it?”
“No I have not! It’s gonna be amazing! I’m gonna be the youngest person there!”
“Yea, to a blind guy.”
“You’re not far from 30 either you know!”
“Well, yea…but I’m not freaking out about it!”
“Well…you should be! You’ll get wrinkles before I do!”
“Please, if anyone is getting wrinkles it’s going to be Lan Wangji because he has to put up with you!”
“At least I have someone to give wrinkles to! You’re gonna be alone forever!”
“...you’re a bitch!”
“Takes one to know one!”
“WEI WUXIAN!”
“OWWWW!”
“JIANG WANYIN!”
“AOOWWWW!”
Jiang Yanli reached up, grabbing both of them by their ears.
“A-Jie!”
“JieJie!”
“That’s enough. I thought I was going to learn how to parent from A-Yuan, not you two.” She sat them down at the kitchen table and served them lunch. Much to their protest that she should rest. “No, I want both of you to sit and stay put.”
Their sister was about to pop. Sure she still had a month and some change to go, but anything could happen. Wei Wuxian knows that better than anyone…in the room anyway.
A-Yuan came almost a whole month early. Wei Wuxian was over at Shufu Qiren’s house because the elder said he should not be alone this far in his pregnancy while Lan Wangji was at work. While they were having tea, Wei Wuxian dropped his cup. Sending tea and glass everywhere. He was gasping and holding onto his stomach. These were not braxton hicks, these pains were so different. Shufu held onto his hand while waiting for and in the ambulance. When they arrived at the hospital, he called his nephew. Who was sure ran at least two red lights to get to his wife. Nothing mattered more than getting to his side. When Lan Wangji arrived, he was immediately escorted to the operating room stating that the mother needed an emergency c-section. Fetal Distress is what he was told.
Once in the right PPE, he practically ran to his beloved’s side. Wei Wuxian was calling out for both his husband and his baby. It was one of the more painful things he’s ever been through. Being cut open and not knowing how your child is doing. Countless times he was told to relax, he was unable to do so until he heard that wonderful shrill cry. Wei Wuxian closed his eyes and let the tears flow. He could do nothing but feel his husband give him forehead kisses and listen to how proud he was of him. Loving it.
The next few weeks were the hardest. Wei Wuxian was recovering at a remarkable pace. They allowed him to go home after a week, but not his baby. His son had to stay for who knows how long! Turns out it was another 2 weeks. THE LONGEST TWO WEEKS OF WEI WUXIAN’S LIFE. He would visit his son everyday and every night he cried because he had to say goodbye. He couldn’t tuck his baby boy into his new crib, he couldn’t have him…but he made damn sure his son knew he was there. Wei Wuxian would talk to him, sing to him. When his A-Yuan finally opened his eyes, his Mama was the first thing he saw. And when he did, he whined and cooed and tried to reach him. Breaking Mama’s heart even further.
Until the day the mother and father got the call that he was healthy enough to bring home. They dropped everything and did just that. Mother and son were clinging to each other. Lan Wangji tried to take over, but A-Yuan cried and cried not being next to Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian could see the hurt in his husband’s eyes at not being able to comfort their son. Wanting to intervene, he stopped himself. As much as hurt him too to hear him cry, he had to show A-Yuan that he had a father he could rely on as well.
And soon enough, he figured that out. So much that his first word was “baba”. Of course Wei Ying wanted to be selfish and hoped he said “mama” first. But nothing could ever make him forget how those golden orbs shone, brighter than the star on any Christmas tree. Lan Zhan is the best father in the world.
Wei Wuxian didn’t realize how far from right now he had gotten until he felt a hand caressing his cheek.
“You with us again, A-xian?”
“Mn. Sorry.”
Jiang Cheng looked across the table at his siblings. He wants to let his Ge know just how bad that jab from earlier actually hurt. He knows he’s not easy to talk to or get along with. But he wants what they have. To have someone waiting for you at home, or just happy to see you when you’re home. Maybe a kid or two. Was his temperament so bad that it scared any prospect away? He has to find someone who can cool him down and keep him in check. Is that too high of a standard? He wants what they have. He was alright with being JiuJiu for now.
“Didi.”
Wei Wuxian sounded so small, never should he sound like that.
“Will you still help me?”
“Stop being weird. Of course I’ll still help.”
And both younger and older sibling was graced with that patented Wei Wuxian smile.
When he finally got home, he ran straight to his husband. Crying and apologizing for the way he acted earlier. He doesn’t know why this bothers him so much. And of course Lan Wangji held him and whispered all his love to him. Wei Wuxian went to A-Yuan and asked to be forgiven. The little boy was confused but wanted to see mama happy. So he ran and jumped on Wei Ying who caught him of course, but lost balance and was falling backwards. Holding A-Yuan against him, holding the back of his head, waited for the impact. But it never came.
Instead, they fell on another body. Lan Wangji, with insane speed, shielded his family from injury. Father and husband looked over the two and only began to breathe when he found no bruises or worse.
A-Yuan then grabbed onto his father’s shirt, sandwiching Mama in between both of them. Giving Mama kisses all over his face while Lan Wangji gave him the same on the back of his neck, leaving Wei Wuxian in a fit of giggles.
Later on in the week, he met up with Nie Huaisang for their weekly lunch date. Where the Nie basically shoved a binder into his hands while he went back to fussing over his baby. Nie Huaisang was A-Yuan’s self proclaimed Fairy GodFather. Spoiling him since Wei Wixian found out he was pregnant.
“Woah.”
“I know, you’re welcome!”
Everything in the binder was everything he threw out as an idea. There was even fabric options that his outfit could be made with. He was then handed a marker and was told to circle exactly what he wanted.
“All of this looks expensive.”
“I didn’t tell you to worry about the price. Besides, I’m not the one paying for all this.”
“…please don’t drain my husband’s bank account.”
Nie Huaisang rolled his eyes. “Oh please! He has more money than he even knows about!”
“Sang-ge!”
“Relax, A-Ying. It’s a shared expense.”
Fine…can you at least let me put my outfit together?”
“Of course, my little crumpet! Do you have something in mind?”
Wei Wuxian reached into the diaper bag and pulled out a crumpled paper. Unfolding it, he handed it to a wide eyed Gege.
“I know you’re a better artist than this.”
“This is just a rough draft, okay!”
“Get to cleaning it up! You don’t have that much time!”
“I know! But this seems simple enough.”
“For a seamstress maybe.”
“Uuughbdidndbdjdn!”
“Maybe hubby can find someone to make it for you?”
“No! I can do this! And so help me god if you don’t start believing in me I will revoke your A-Yuan privileges for a month!”
“NOT AGAIN!! GEGE IS SORRY!!!!”
The lunch ended with Huaisang begging and holding hostage his son until he rescinded the threat. He then took his son to their nearest craft store and he helped mama pick out the fabric. He found the perfect red silk and black lace, he then found the perfect strings of pearls. A few more things to pick up were cosplay foam for the wings, fake roses, and gold embroidery thread. He had everything!
He would apologize to hubby about how much this actually costs, it went way over what he originally thought. Lugging this stuff and a baby is hard work. But he would persevere! He settled everything in the car and then strapped A-Yuan into his car seat. Then once he pulled up to the house, he once again, strapped his son to his chest and began bringing everything inside.
He then settled the baby into the playpen that was in their craft room. Wei Wuxian was extremely lucky that his boy took after him in this case. Even as the sewing machine was going, he took his nap. Only waking up when Lan Wangji got home. Giving his wife some reprieve from child duty, he took his baby boy to the other room.
It’s been some time since then and Wangji had asked him to go get mama for dinner. He went and came right back. Knocking into baba’s legs.
“What’s the matter, baobei?”
“Mama is crying!!”
Without thinking about anything else, he shit the stove off, picked up his kid and ran to where his love was. And the scene before him broke his heart. Lan Wangji walked carefully to his wife, got on his knees and gently put his hand on Wei Ying’s shoulder.
“My love, what happened?”
“I-I trtRied to sew the lace to this, but it ddidnt work and thhen I coulddnt get the wings to sstay on the ccorset and I reEALLY WANTED TO DO THIS BUT I CAN’T AND FEEL STUPID!!”
“Come here my love.” Wangji gathered his wife in his arms while depositing their baby in his lap. “You’re doing your best baby, sewing isn’t easy.”
“I jus-hic-t —“
“Breathe baby. A-Yuan, do you want to show Mama what you’ve been working on?”
“Mn! Watch me Mama!” With each word, A-Yuan put up a finger and then another and another. “1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12…”
The boy began to struggle and his face was showing it.
“Umm.”
Mama sniffled but gave his best smile. “You got this baby. Thir…”
“13!”
“And then what?”
“14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23!” He said victoriously, looking up at his father who nodded. “24 25 25 27 28 29 30!!!”
“My baby is so smart!! … did- did you do this for me?”
“Yea! I wanted to make Mama happy!”
Wei Ying then brought him closer and peppered his little face in kisses.
“That made me very happy.”
“Then you’re gonna be super duper happy when Baba gives you his gift!”
“A-Yuan, that was supposed to be a secret.”
“Oopsie.” The young one giggled.
“Lan Zhan?”
The other man sighed. “Please do not be upset.” He helped his wife up while Wei Ying settled their boy on his hip. He led their to the master bedroom, asking him to wait right there as he disappeared into the walk in. After 2 very long minutes, Lan Wangji came out holding a pretty big box.
“Lan Zhan, what is this?”
“I, may have overstepped but I wanted to do this for you. I just wanted to help.”
“Open it Mama! It’s pretty!”
Who was he to deny his love? He carefully taking the top off, seeing what’s inside and throwing it to the side and gasping.
Inside was his masterpiece. A strap of roses leading down to the lace and pearl covered corset. The middle accentuated with the gold thread. That lead down to a belt of roses held together with an intricate string of pearls, red jewels at the bottom. The skirt had layers, layers of red, black and gold. Black lace woven into each layer. Some might say the wings looks costumey, but it complimented the dress perfectly.
“Oh my…”
“I know Wei Ying wanted to do this himself, but I-“
Wei Wuxian would not let him finish, running into his arms.
“I truly have the best husband in the entire whole world!”
“Wei Ying is not upset?”
“No. You let me try and only stepped in when I was at my limit. Thank you.”
Lan Wangji leaned down, capturing his love’s lips, pouring all his love into that connection.
“There is no need for any of that between us”
Wangji then felt a tug on his pants.
“Me too, baba!” A-Yuan squealed, reaching up with his little arms. And who was Baba to deny him? He picked his boy up so he was eye level with Wei Ying, who then planted a big kiss on Mama’s cheek.
“God, I love you both.”
They both helped put the dress on the mannequin and went about their night. Wei Wuxian apologizes profusely for letting the dinner his husband cooked go to waste. The taller man promptly shushed him and they ordered food instead. The food was consumed, bath time was done and a book was read. And then another book was read and then one more before Baba put his foot down.
In the living room, Wei Ying plopped himself into Lan Zhan’s lap and rattled off the only things he needed to get to complete his look. Heels, press on nails, and a choker.
“Hey, Lan Zhan?”
“Mn?”
“What would you have done with the dress if I was actually able to make it?”
“Nothing. It was only made for Wei Ying.”
“You sweet sweet man.”
Fast forward to a week before the party. Because he worked so much and made sure things were taken care of, Lan Wangji took an entire two weeks off. Also he was kinda the boss, so he could do whatever he wanted. And what he wanted was to spend the day with his wife. Helping him pick out everything and anything else he needed. (Read wanted)
But Wei Ying would have none of it. This is among one of the cutest things about his Wei Ying. He values his independence. So, like a good husband he just followed and listened. Not even saying a word when his pretty wife went to pay and took out the wrong credit card. Even if it was by accident, Wangji loves to spoil his baby.
Now it’s time to party! He hates to have to do this, but he has to thank the peacock for letting them use the ballroom at Koi Towers.
Yanli and Huaisang were in charge of helping their XianXian get ready. They did not trust any of the guys. As Yanli was stringing up the corset, she noticed Wei Ying put his hand on his stomach. Asking if he was okay, waving it off as usual. Blaming the nerves as it was how he woke up this morning. Her and Huaisang gave each other a knowing look but said nothing else.
The dress was finally on and they sat him in the chair. Yanli went so simple with his makeup. He was already gorgeous. Opting for some blush, eyeliner and red lipstick. While Huaisang was complaining about the rats nest he calls hair. Which is a stretch. Thanks to Lan Wangji it was brushed and cared for every night despite Wei Wuxian’s objections. Sang-gege worked his magic anyway! And gave his didi an early gift. Gathering two pieces of hair and tied them together with a bright red ribbon and gold embroidered bunnies on the end.
And he was ready. And he was going to get a grand entrance, courtesy of his baby boy.
“Da Da DA DAAAAAAAA! MAMA!!”
When he stepped out, the air in the room changed. All the attention was on Wei Wuxian and he all of a sudden became shy.
“Ta daa heh” the birthday boy laughed nervously.
Lan Wangji wasted no time in stepping forward. Gently taking one of Wei Wuxian’s hands and wrapping his other around that waist he loves so much, brings the other close. Lan Wangji kisses his hand and says:
“You look just as radiant as you did on our wedding day.”
“Are you saying that I don’t look pretty everyday?”
“Wei Ying.”
“I know, Lan Zhan. And you will always be the handsome man I fell in love with way back in high school.”
They were interrupted by a cough by Jiang Cheng who said they could be all lovey dovey later, that there was a room full of people waiting for them.
This was one of the best nights of Wei Wuxian’s life. Everyone was celebrating him. Not his age, not even how he looked, just him.
He took a deep breath and bit the bullet.
“Zixuan, I wanted to thank you for letting us use the ballroom.”
“It’s uhh, no problem. Just take all this gaudy stuff with you when you’re done.”
“Can’t you be nice for two seconds?!”
“Me?! When were you ever nice to me?!”
“I was nice enough to let you marry my JieJie!”
“You let me? You…”
Jin Zixuan was flabbergasted. Wei Wuxian was hugging him. This is the first time they ever truly felt like brothers. Unfortunately, he had no idea what to do now. He has to endure the affection because he was getting stared at. Angrily by Jiang Wanyin, a smiling wife, a confused toddler and a judgy Lan Wangji. Zixuan was about to pat the younger man’s back when said man pulled away, covering his mouth.
“A-xian, are you okay?”
Wei Wuxian nodded wearily and ran to the bathroom. Wangji was about to go after his wife when he was stopped by his sister. Worried as he was, he let her go. If anyone could get anything out of Wei Ying quicker than he can, it’s her.
“A-xian, I’m coming in. Oh, you poor thing.”
“JieJie, what’s wrong with me?”
“Here XianXian. Take this for me.”
Wei Wuxian’s eyes went wide.
“Bbbut this is a uhh…”
“Yes it is, take it. Please.”
So he did. And it was the longest 5 minutes of waiting in his life. Did it always take this long?! It didn’t feel like this with A-Yuan. But then again, they were actively trying for a baby. And sure enough, there it was.
-Pregnant-
Just then there was a knock on the door.
“JieJie, Ge, is everything okay? Wangji looks like he’s about to pass out and A-Yuan won’t stop crying.”
“Ready to go out there and tell A-Zhan?” She was answered with a nod. “A-Cheng, could you ask Wangji to come here, please?”
He was worried but did as he was told. Once husband, wife and child were reunited, the siblings went back to everyone else and told them not to worry.
“Mama!”
“Wei Ying, what is the matter?”
“Well, um you know how I was feeling super nauseous this morning? Well, turns out there was a reason for that.”
Wei Wuxian handed him the positive test. In all honesty, he was very afraid to show his husband. They never talked about having another baby. What if Lan Zhan didn’t want it, Wei Ying would never be able to give them up. Would this be the end of his happy ending?
After one agonizing minute he got his answer. In the form of an embrace, which then turned into him being lifted off the ground.
“Lan Zhan!”
Once on the floor again, his husband looked into his eyes.
“This is wonderful news, Wei Ying.”
“Really?”
“Mn.”
Wei Wuxian felt a tug on his dress, so he kneeled down to talk to his baby.
“Mama, are you sick?”
“Not in the way you think, my little radish. We just found out that you’re going to be a big brother!”
“REALLY!?”
“MN!”
Wei Wuxian was then tackled to the floor in a hug. Lan Wangji smiled at his family and then realized it wasn’t a good idea that his wife was on the floor in his condition. They went back to the rest of the family and let them in on the good news. And the party continued!
AND everyone kept the alcohol away from the OTHER mother to be.
