Work Text:
He watched as Wukong waved the others goodbye, a good naturedly smile on his face that seemed to become strained as soon as he closed the door. Macaque soon realized that there was a... slight deviation to this usual ritual that has been avoided like the plague for quite some time. Macaque was still here, in his house. Okay, maybe it's not slight, it's actually, well, very much something that is not intended to happen again. Not after last time when they nearly had a full brawl, only for MK to barge in because he forgot something. Seriously, someone give that kid a cookie or something.
Sun Wukong turned to the unwanted but at the same time he'd prefer if he didn't leave but also---
Macaques tail swished around nervously. the first indication that this interaction would not be good, because Sun Wukong never handled a nervous Six-Eared Macaque well.
The atmosphere was tense, uncomfortable. Nothing it'd usually be like if the others were around, but they're not, so they're alone, together. The thought does nothing to soothe Macaques already nervous complexion.
Wukong is watching him with an eerie amount of clarity and sharpness to his eyes Macaque didn't quite remember being there. Or maybe it was always there. It's not like he knew the Oh-So-Great Sun Wukong anymore.
They may have started trying to at least pretend it didn't happen, started to try being friends again (for the sake of the others), but there was always a lingering awkwardness. Or anxiety, usually in Wukongs case it's frustration because that man never seemed to have a grip on that kind of stuff. Mai said it was anger issues or whatever.
He awkwardly started to shuffle towards the door, only to be stopped by Wukong grabbing his shoulder.
"We should talk." He was serious, huh. Unfortunately, Macaque didn't want to relive or talk about anything related to their very much unconventional past.
"Ahh, well, I'd love to Wukong but I have---" He shut up when a glare was thrown his way, clearly he wasn't being given a choice in this situation. So he just sighed, gearing up for the inevitable fleeing he'd have to do as soon as Wukong got a little too angry. Maybe. Hopefully not.
At the sight of Macaques silent acceptance, he loosened his grip, relief he'd never admit to having immediately overcoming anything else he'd been feeling. Which was strange, since when had Macaque started affecting him in that way again.
The night was long, but who knew if the two would ever have a productive enough conversation to figure something out. Something that didn't lead to Macaque nearly clawing fur off of Sun Wukong, or Sun Wukong from nearly breaking every piece of furniture he owned to vent his anger on anything but Macaque. He'd never do anything like that to him. Never. Not when it could lead to another event that would traumatize them both again, and possibly put Macaque out of commission for good this time. (After all, LBD wasn't here to revive him again.)
Macaques ears twitched, the two ended up going out for fresh air. It was needed, considering he was beginning to feel very trapped, nervous, in there.
"You know, if you really wanted to make things right again..." The Monkey King was at immediate attention, no longer looking tired from where he was lying next to Macaque. "...you can start by, I don't know, getting me tucked into a bed. You do know I've been sleeping in your tree, right?"
Sun Wukong looked contemplative for a moment, before a wide grin spread across his face. "I only have one bed."
Bastard.
