Chapter 1: Arrival at the Annex
Chapter Text
'Welcome to Ulleungdo Island' the sign above the sliding door reads in Korean and English.
Yoongi begrudgingly drags his suitcase out of the small port, the wheels getting stuck on the uneven pavement every few meters. He groans quietly when he stumbles, barely preventing his suitcase from falling all the way to the ground. His backpack almost slides off his shoulder, he just manages to catch it with his other hand. He can't risk his Laptop getting damaged after all.
It doesn't help his current situation that he's not great with boats and still feels a little unsteady and seasick from the almost two hour ride. Humans were made for land, not water after all, but he seems to be the only one thinks that. Everyone else seems just fine, adults hurrying towards the taxis and some children playing catch while their parents seem to be sorting out the rental cars.
Just outside the port is a display forecasting strong rain for the rest of the day. That in combination with the dark clouds looming above the sea and the strong wind almost blowing his beanie off his head doesn't do much to appease him. Maybe he can convince his friend to go back to Seoul and just blow off this plan. This is not vacation weather after all.
If only he had been more careful and Seokjin hadn't managed to sneak a video of him dancing to girlgroup songs he wouldn't be in this predicament now. It's so unfair, really.
He looks around, trying to spot the car Seokjin promised to send. At least he won't have to take a taxi, it's the only upside to his current situation. He hates having to talk to strangers which the driver will probably have been told. He certainly hopes so. Right now he's in no mood for stupid smalltalk.
Finally he sees a black hyundai approaching, looking a lot like the model Seokjin uses most of the time. There's no doubt left in his mind when the car parks right in front of him, a driver in a black suit gets out and greets him with a nod. At least someone else who isn't all that talkative.
The man helps him load his suitcase into the trunk, thank god, because it's really heavy with some of his music equipment. Of course Seokjin said this is supposed to be a vacation, but come on, he can't just not work. That's not how his brain was designed. His friend will have to physically fight him if he doesn't want Yoongi to work on some music.
Yoongi climbs into the backseat, almost tangling his legs while putting his old grey eastpak backpack into the foot space. He reconnects his headphones and stares out the window with Epik High blasting in his ears.
He faintly remembers Seokjin telling him they'd meet at Hyeonpo Port, so why exactly are they driving further into the mountains right now? He asks the driver as much, receiving nothing but a vague answer in return, leaving him unsatisfied. He doesn't like surprises and Seokjin knows as much.
So of course he does the logical thing. Calling Seokjin and complaining to him. It doesn't even get to the third ring before his hyung picks up.
"Yoongi-ah, how have you been? What an honour, I can't even remember the last time you cal-" "Hyung what is this?", he interrupts, "you force me to put my schedule on halt, getting behind on work and now I'm here with storm warnings and being taken to some mysterious place."
Seokjin doesn't even have the decency to act sorry for him, but starts cackling on the other side of the line. "Will you relax for once? Vacation means being spontaneous and having fun, not adhering to a strict schedule." "I'm not having fun though. Having a schedule to follow sounds much more fun that whatever your plan is."
"Come on Yoongi-ah, trust me just this once. It'll be good for you." He doubts that very much and hangs up before his hyung can spout any more nonsense. Spontaneous and fun should never ever be used in the same sentence.
Finishing a song before the dealine? Sounds fun. Jotting down lyrics and planning songs for himself and a few other artists in advance? Pretty fun as well. Staying up for days on end with minimal sleep and food? Even that can be fun if the songs turn out well in the end.
You know what's not fun though? Going somewhere unknown, spending a whole week with strangers in a strange place away from the safety of his studio and being forced to take a break. That sounds more like torture in Yoongis opinion.
After what feels like an eternity the car finally slows down. Yoongi tries to suppress his awe at the view. It's totally not in the top ten most beautiful things he's seen in his life. He convinces himself that the dark looming clouds make the view rather ugly and uninviting. Well at least he fits right in, he thinks while giggling to himself. The driver must think he's a lunatic by now.
While the driver gets his luggage out of the trunk he takes a look around, trying to figure out where that B&B could be. Unless Seokjin is into those tiny micro apartments now he doubts he's in the right spot. Shouldn't a professional driver be good at following GPS?
There's another guy sitting on the curb, nose buried into some sciency looking book. Yoongi has to work hard to school his facial expression into a somewhat neutral one. Just the cover of the book brings back far too many memories from physics class.
The driver hands him his suitcase and gets back into the car without losing another word. Great. Now Yoongi is stranded out here with some science nerd.
At the sound of wheels on pavement the stranger finally looks up while pushing his glasses further up on his nose with his index. So nerdy. A dimpled smile spreads on his face. "Hi! I'm Kim Namjoon. Are you also headed for the B&B?" Yoongi nods and mumbles his own name as introduction before plopping down onto the ground next to Namjoon. He has to hold onto his suitcase so it doesn't roll down the mountain.
"I was told to wait for two others to arrive, so unless you've got someone hidden away in your luggage we'll have to wait here some more." Yoongi nods again. Hopefully he'll get the hint that Yoongi doesn't want to talk. Apparently Namjoon is as smart as he looks, because he goes right back to reading.
Yoongi can feel himself getting more and more restless. He's really not good at doing nothing. First he tries bouncing his leg, but after a few irritated glances from Namjoon he stops. Then he rummages through his backpack with his free hand, trying to locate his lyrics notebook. He also fishes out a pen from the bottom of the bag and decides doing a little work is a great start for this vacation.
If only he could think of decent lyrics to jot down. Seems like this vacation is already starting to affect his mind negatively. He pouts at the empty pages, resorting to scribbling down random words and drawing a sketch of Holly to not seem like a total loser who doesn't know how to write in a notebook. Not that he cares what Namjoons thinks of him, but still.
When the first drops of rain start landing on the paper his mood is finally down the drain. He snaps the notebook shut and hugs the backback to his chest, hoping to keep his laptop dry. He hates water!
Out of options, he decides to chat with Namjoon some more. It's way too boring just sitting on the curb and staring holes into the pavement. "So what are you reading?" Namjoon seems startles, like he completely forgot there is someone sitting right next to him.
He glances down to the book and back up at Yoongi, who raises his eyebrows in anticipation for an answer. "Oh this? I have an upcoming exam and want to review the physics portion again. It's not my strongest suit." "But if you have an exam soon, then why are you taking a vacation?", not that Yoongi knows much about vacations or studying, but he's sure a nerd like Namjoon would rather study at home or the library than in the middle of the woods.
"I guess it sounded fun? And I mean I still have a few months left to study, so my friends convinced me this one week won't hurt. After all", he raises the book slightly, "I also brought some of my books with me."
Yoongi is sure he looks absolutely dumbfounded. "Okay", he says slowly and after a pause adds:"I think we have different definitions of the word 'upcoming'." With that he turns away again. He never understood how anyone could put this much effort into studying. Especially physics.
A few minutes later Yoongi thinks he's hallucinating from boredom when he hears one of the songs he produced sounding from down the street. He knew vacation wouldn't do him any good, but he still didn't expect his mental decline to happen that quickly.
But turns out he's not going crazy. There's an electric scooter approaching, driven by a guy with the most colourful outfit and most atrocious sneakers Yoongi has ever had the displeasure of seeing in his whole life. There's a music box strapped to the front of the scooter blasting 'eight' at full volume and the guy manages to sing along even louder.
Yoongi is so shocked he's sure his mouth is wide open. What did Seokjin rope him into and where did he find all these weird people. For a moment he hopes this is some kind of prank show and Seokjin will jump out from behind a tree laughing at his reaction.
But nothing happens other than the colourful stranger parking the scooter and shouldering his snoopy backpack. Yoongi hides his face in his hands, closes his eyes and tries to convice himself this is just a dream. A very bad nightmare.
A booming voice shatters the illusion. "Hi, I'm Jung Hoseok! Nice to meet you!" Hard to believe, but it gets even louder when Namjoon and Hoseok figure out they're the same age. He groans and gets up, not even having introduced himself to Hoseok yet.
"You said we only had to wait until there's three of us, right? So what now?" "Oh, we have to take the Monorail." Yoongi is sure he's misheard that. "The what now?" He glances over to Hoseok and even he seems at a loss for words. He didn't think that was possible. Namjoon just points to a rusty little wagon with three wooden seats next to the road.
"No way I'm getting on that thing, I don't wanna die." At least that's something Yoongi can agree on with Hoseok. He's sure the wagon will fall apart as soon as anyone sits down and to add to that the drop looks pretty steep.
Next thing he knows another car approaches and a guy dressed in all black gets out, introducing himself as the operator of the monorail. Yoongi reluctantly hands over his suitcase that gets stored on some kind of carriage behind the one with seats.
Namjoon is already strapped into the front seat of the monorail while Yoongi and Hoseok stand next to it, still not fully convinced. Eventually he gets roped into playing Rock Paper Scissors for the back seat, because Hoseok is convinced that's where he's least likely to die. Yoongi's not so sure he agrees with that since the physics guy sat in the front, but he plays anyway. And loses.
So now he's stuck in the middle between Namjoon, who is having a monologue about the beauty of nature and Hoseok, who is already screaming before they even started moving.
The operator starts the motor and Yoongi definitely won't admit his heart and body did a little jump at the sudden loud noise and the rough jolt of the wagon towards the drop. He already hates everthing about this whole experience. Fuck vacation.
When Hoseok holds tightly onto his shoulders he tenses slightly, but doesn't say anything. In a way the pressure is grounding. Even though he's totally not scared.
"So why did you guys decide to apply for this?", comes a shaky voice from behind. "Apply for what?" Namjoon glances over his shoulder and gives him an odd look. "For the B&B vacation? I thought it sounded fun and mysterious and also pretty cool that they said a famous celebrity would be hosting it. I didn't expect I'd actually get picked though."
Yoongi frowns at that. "I didn't apply to anything, I was forced to come here against my will." The it dawns of him that Seokjin might very possibly be the famous celebrity. What did he get himself into now? A week with crazy fans of his best friend?
Now the other two are frowning, probabaly not fully believing him. Hoseok quickly interrupts the awkward silence with a laugh and says:"I applied because i hoped the celebrity would be an idol or something like that. I'm a dancer, so I always like to learn and to make connections."
Well if Hoseok's any good at dancing he's certainly come to the wrong address to learn. Yoongi has seen Seokjin's club moves before and he's sure any actual dancer would be horrified, especially by his infamous traffic light move. Jin's a great singer, but he's never taken a single dance class in his life. Hoseok might get lucky with the connections aspect though, because Seokjin sure does have a lot of those.
"Oh my god, look how pretty it is!", Namjoon exclaims and Yoongi is pulled from his thoughts. The bushes around them come together at the top, forming some sort of cave. Someone has installed fairy lights everywhere and Yoongi has to admit it does look very pretty. He pulls his phone from his pocket to take a video, bumping his elbow into Hoseok's knee in the process.
The rest of the ride only takes a few minutes, but the jerk with which the wagon comes to a stop is almost worse than the one at the start. Yoongi will have to pay his physiotherapist a visit after this vacation is over.
"Yoongi-ah! My favourite grumpy cat, I haven't seen you in forever!" He would recognize that voice and especially the shrill laugh that follows anywhere. "Jin hyung", he replies much less enthusiastically.
The other two don't say anything and when Yoongi turns to unload his suitcase, he can see that their jaws have dropped to the floor. Right, Seokjin is famous and not everyone is as used to seeing him as Yoongi.
"And you must be two of my guests, nice to meet you, don't be shy. Make yourselves at home! You can call me hyung as well." Yoongi looks around and takes in the cabin that looks like it's been abandoned for a few decades and might collapse at any moment. He doesn't know about the others but it doesn't feel very homey to him.
After introductions, Seokjin offers a tour of the house. It starts off great with him struggling to open the jammed sliding door. When he finally gets it open with the help of Namjoon (although Yoongi is sure he heard one of the hinges breaking in the process), they finally get a good look at the interior.
Hoseok gulps loudly and, when Seokjin is out of earshot, mumbles:"Is it just me or did the military provide better sleeping quarters?" Namjoon shakes his head and whispers:"It's not just you."
Yoongi strolls past them, leaving his shoes at the door and putting on some slippers. "I wouldn't know since i did public service, but this is the worst housing interior i've seen in my whole life." "Yoongi-ah stop complaining! Look we even have a fireplace and there's also a water park, gym and some stairs for stargazing!"
He joins Seokjin in the kitchen portion of the house, which is not at all seperated from the bedroom. It only takes him one look to ask:"Where's the chimney?" "Have you seen how many windows we have? That's like the best ventilation system."
Yoongi buries his face in his hand again. "Never would I have thought I was going to die at the ripe old age of 25 of carbon monoxide poisoning." "That's because you're not. Now come on, try to live a little!", then addressing everyone he adds:"Follow me, I'll show you the fun facilities outside."
Still in disbelief, Yoongi mutters to himself:"We're all going to die.", but he follows the rest of their small group outside nonetheless.
"Here you can see the water park!", Seokjin points to the left of the house and Yoongi cocks his head a little. There's a rusty slide ending in a small water basin. He isn't fully convinced he won't infect himself with braineating amoeba if he takes a swim in that water. On the off chance he doesn't, he'll definitely get tetanus from the slide though.
Namjoon and Hoseok are mumbling amonst themselves, acting like they've known each other for ages and Seokjin uses the moment to reveal another part of his scheme. "Since we're all about practicality this is also where we're going to do our laundry", he motions to the basin.
"I'm not sure I want to wash my stuff in the same water we've been in with our whole bodies.", Yoongi complains. Seokjin stares him down for a moment, but why is there a smirk on his face? "I'm glad to know you're actually considering using the slide, but you'll be glad to know that we likely aren't going to because of the storm. So you can do your laundry without concerns."
Yoongi would like to tell him that he still has a lot of concerns about the water quality and safety, it doesn't look very clean after all, but he keeps his mouth shut for his friend's sake.
And also for Namjoon and Hoseok. The two look like they're actually enjoying this, probably still over the moon from meeting Kim Seokjin. They're giggling at everything, apparently thinking Jin's ideas are hilarious. Yoongi doesn't want to ruin their good mood by bitching around, but he certainly hopes they'll come to their senses soon.
Next, Seokjin shows them the outdoor gym, which is equally rusty as the slide. Namjoon tries hanging from one of the pull up bars, but then decides he doesn't trust it to hold his weight. Yoongi absentmindedly takes one of the 2kg dumbbells that is taped in the middle with some bright pink duct tape. He quickly puts it back down, worried it might break apart and land on his feet otherwise.
Further up the mountain they finally get to the stargazing stairs Seokjin has been teasering. The stairs themselves aren't extraordinary, clearly just dug out of the soil, uneven surface and currently turning into mud with the rain, but the view definitely is something different.
All of them (except Seokjin who's spouting dad joke after dad joke) are shocked into silence while admiring the view. Sure, it would be even better without the dark clouds and the rain, but it's amazing to see how the trees and hills part to reveal colourful houses and the sea.
Even from up here they can see the big waves and with a shudder Yoongi thinks he's quite glad to be so far away. He's never been a fan of water, especially not if it looks like it wants to drown him. But from up here it feels like they've been teleported right into some fantasy movie or game and he half expects a dragon to rise from the sea.
Just then they can hear the monorail rattling again and Seokjin happily announces:"That must be the rest of the group!" before quickly making his way back down the hill. While trying to follow, Yoongis foot slips a little on the wet ground and if anyone asks he did not let out an embarrassingly high squeak.
Luckily Hoseok somehow catches him and with another small laugh (seriously does he ever stop laughing), says:"Careful there! You don't want to be forced to wash the mud from your clothes in that pool right away, do you?"
Yoongi shudders a little, if it's from Hoseok's voice right next to his ear or the imagination of doing the laundry in the cursed water basin, he's not sure.
For the rest of the way back to the main area Hoseok keeps holding his hand tightly, claiming he has to make sure Yoongi doesn't slip again. Honestly he should be more worried about Namjoon who stumbles over every root and rock on the ground (and there's a lot of those).
At the same time they get back to the cabin, the monorail also arrives with new guests. The boys in the front and middle seats are chatting animatedly, clearly having enjoyed the ride.
The one in the back seat however looks a bit like a spooked bunny, eyes wide and hunched in on himself. Yoongi isn't quite sure if he was scared of the ride or if he's just a bit overwhelmed by the two other boys. He would understand either option very well and feels a little sorry for him.
They get off and the one from the middle seat starts getting their luggage from the wagon while the one in the front starts another introduction round. "Hi guys! I'm Taehyung and over there is my soulmate Jimin!"
It gets a bit chaotic with everyone repeating their names, asking questions and the newcomers (minus spooked bunny) getting even more excited when they recognize Seokjin. Taehyung starts singing his favourite lines from Jin's songs, Jimin dances along and then to top it off Hoseok joins in on the dancing.
"Hey, you're doing my choreography!", Hoseok exclaims with a wide smile on his face. Jimin seems to realize for the first time they're actually in sync and musters Hoseok from top to bottom before his eyes grow wide. "You're hopeonthestreet?!" This is followed by even more screaming and hugging from both of them and Yoongi empathizes with bunny boy who covers his ears.
Finally it quietens down again, at least as much as it can quieten with five overexcited people around, and bunny gets the opportunity to introduce himself as Jungkook.
Hoseok and Namjoon offer to give the newcomers a tour of the place while Yoongi wants to inspect the kitchen area some more in hopes of finding a hidden functioning chimney somewhere.
He does not find one sadly.
Seokjin suggests getting started on cooking dinner and when Yoongi questions why a B&B offers dinner, the older man just shrugs and retorts it wouldn't make much sense to serve breakfast on a day where guests only arrive at afternoon, would it now?
Yoongi starts wondering if Seokjin only forced him to come so he could have some unpaid kitchen staff instead of having to cook for the group alone. Certainly seems so, Yoongi thinks as he's slicing away on onions, carrots, cucumber and radish. How unfair.
At least he's not the only one, Hoseok also gets roped into the dinner team when Seokjin overhears him claiming he's really good at cooking rice.
Seokjin starts a fire under the big pot in the kitchen and within seconds Yoongi can feel his eyes starting to tear up and his nose getting irritated from the smoke. Evidently the open windows aren't a great ventilation system.
He evacuates the cabin and continues prepping the vegetables on the big rock-quare-table-thing out front. Not long after, Hoseok also comes hurrying out of the cabin with a pot of washed rice and the portable electric stove.
Yoongi has to go back in once to get some sauces and spices for his cucumber salad and quietly admires Seokjin who stays right by the fireplace to cook samgyeopsal. He's also tearing up, but seems determined to stay.
While they finish up cooking, the other guys bring out trays, chopsticks and some mismatched cups. The rain finally let up for a while, so they've decided to eat outside. They also bring some rags to dry the rock square in the places where Yoongi hasn't already done so and Jungkook quietly gets some pillows to make sitting more comfortable.
Despite the wind and earlier rain it's still quite warm outside and Yoongi doesn't even feel the need to get one of his jackets from the suitcase.
Once everything is done Jin and Hoseok portion the rice and meat while Yoongi sets up bowls with the side dishes. Finally noticing how hungry they were, they all start digging in and for the first time since they all got together it's quiet. The only thing to be heard is the clinking of metal chopsticks on metal trays and the usual eating noises, though some are louder (Seokjin) some quieter (Jungkook).
When everything is gone some of them are still hungry, so Seokjin pulls out a few packs of instant ramen. Taehyung cheers happily and voluntarily goes back into the smoke filled cabin to refill the pot with fresh water.
While they're waiting for the water to boil, the chatting starts back up again.
"So what do you guys do for a living?", Seokjin asks curiously, "I mean I'd start, but I'm pretty sure we all know who I am already." There's definitely pride swinging in his voice. Yoongi rolls his eyes, but answers:"I also work in the music industry, but you guys wouldn't know me. That's how I know Jin hyung though, I'm also with Bighit."
The guys seem excited at that, but Yoongi refuses to answer any more questions. He doesn't like to reveal much about his personal life. They probably would recognize his producer alias from some of the popular songs he's worked on or even more likely the alias he publishes his own music under, but he stays anonymous for a reason. These strangers don't need to figure out it's him.
Jimin is staring at him intendly and Yoongi starts uncomfortably shifting in his seat. He doesn't like having anyone's attention on him. "I think I've seen you before." Yoongi can only shrug. What is he supposed to say to that? He hopes Jimin will just stop staring, but now everyones eyes are mustering him curiously. He hates it.
"Yeah, aren't you the guy who was rumored to be Seokjin hyungs boyfriend a while ago?", Taehyung wonders. Yoongi grimaces a little, he'd rather not be reminded of that. It's exactly why he prefers to stay in the shadows, otherwise people would be judging his every step.
Seokjin however claps his hands and exclaims:"Oh my god yes, I had almost repressed that memory! It was hilarious but weird at the same time, I mean can you imagine? Me and Yoongi? As if!" "It wasn't that hilarious", Yoongi counters, "I got death threats and stalkers because of something that wasn't even true."
"Of course that part wasn't fun, but I always wondered how anyone could see us interact and come to the conclusion we're dating. Let's be honest it's very easy to tell you're like my little brother." Yoongi doesn't want to go into it any further, preferring to ignore those memories, so he asks:"What about you guys then? What do you do?"
"I'm studying to become am astronomer.", Namjoon says and his eyes seem to light up at the mention of the job. "Oh that's cool, then tell me what does being a sagittarius say about me?"
Yoongi can't help but facepalm while groaning:"It means you're a fucking dumbass, hyung. That's astrology, not astronomy." Namjoon adds with a soft smile on his face:"Actually it probably means you're charming, optimistic, honest and maybe a little impulsive." "A little?!", Yoongi gestures towards the smoke still filling their sleeping quarters.
"Oh oh I wanna know mine too!", Jimin happily exclaims while waving one hand in the air as if Namjoon wouldn't notice him otherwise, "I'm a libra!" "I guess the you might value harmony and balance and are pretty social and intellectual." "That he is.", Taehyung says proudly.
Hoseok asks:"So you guys have known each other for a while, right?", nodding to Taehyung and Jimin. The latter responds:"Oh no, we just met earlier today at the monorail." "But I thought you said you were soulmates?", Namjoon wonders and Taehyung tsks.
"That's exactly why we're soulmates, hyung! We just met, but it feels like I've known Jiminie since forever. We're even the same age, it's definitely fate." Yoongi can't really relate, he doesn't believe in anything like soulmates, but he chooses not to comment on it. The younger boys seem happy.
Jimin changes the topic:"I'm a dance major at SNU by the way. I mostly do contemporary, but recently I've also been trying out some new styles." "I'm also studying at SNU! I'm a business major though."
Namjoon asks:"Why business?" At that Taehyung quietly purses his lips, not answering for a while, before he mumbles:"My parents really wanted it so I can take over their company one day." It's clear he doesn't really want to go into the topic any further, so Hoseok quickly says:"I'm also a dance major. On the side I have a Youtube channel where I teach choreographies, post freestyles and sometimes dance battles."
Jimin and him talk some more about their major, comparing the universities and teaching schedules. When they get into some more technical dancing terms that no one else can follow, Seokjin finally asks Jungkook about himself.
He nervously plays with his fingers and avoids eye contact while telling them about his videography major and how he sometimes likes to do gaming streams online. He seems rather shy and Yoongi can understand how the loud group could be very overwhelming. Jungkook is also the youngest amongst them, he's only turning 21 later this year.
Once the Ramen is gone as well Taehyung and Namjoon offer to do the dishes, while the rest of them are trying to place some ventilators throughout the cabin to get the rest of the smoke out. The smell is lingering and Yoongi swears his eyes are still tearing up a bit, but at least it's somewhat bearable now.
One after the other they go to the small bathroom, which is a short way down the hill into the woods, to shower and get ready for bed. It started raining again, so Yoongi hurries back to the cabin after his turn, not wanting to get his hair wet after just blowdrying it. He hopes he won't have to pee during the night because he might be too scared to go this way in the dark all on his own.
Back in the cabin he rolls out his sleeping mat between Jungkook's and Hoseok's, grumbling a little to himself when the very distinct smell of smoke clings to it. He gets his pillow, which someone has thankfully taken back inside when it started raining, as well as unfolding his blanket (which also smells like smoke) and quickly drifts off to sleep despite the chattering around him.
At least he survived the first day. It can't get much worse, can it?
Chapter 2: Conquering fears and getting closer
Summary:

Chapter Text
Throughout the night they are waken up multiple times by Namjoons snoring. Generally Yoongi is a deep sleeper, his roommate back in the day used to snore like freight train and after getting used to it he had no troubles sleeping through it. This however is on a whole other level.
The third or fourth time it happens Yoongi doesn't wake up by the snoring itself but by Seokjin's and Jimin's complaints, who seem to have had enough.
"Namjoon hyung! You're doing it again!"
"Namjoon-ah some of us need their beauty sleep!"
"Sorry sorry won't happen again."
"That's what you said the last three times!"
"If we're already awake I'm gonna go to the bathroom real quick."
"Taehyung!"
The bright shine of a flashlight hits Yoongi right in the face, he groans and turns to the other side, his left arm numb from laying on it for too long. He pulls the blanket up over his shoulders, trying to get comfortable again.
It feels like he's being watched, so he squints one eye open and finds Hoseok looking right back at him.
"What time is it?", Hoseok whispers groggily. Yoongi reaches for the phone next to his pillow, confused at his lockscreen for a moment. Since when is Holly a Shih Tzu? He's convinced he must be in some very weird dream right now, but relays the time nonetheless. "4:38am."
For a short while they're all laying there in silence, only disturbed by chirping of crickets outside and the steady dripping of the faucet.
Yoongi counts twelve drips before he can hear hasty footsteps approaching. Jungkook has started sniffling a bit like his nose is congested, but he seems to have already fallen back asleep already.
Taehyung pushes the door open carefully, but once again it gets caught on something and he has to apply some force. The creaking wakes everyone who has started drifting off back up.
Once Taehyung slipped through the door and makes his way to his mat on the far side of the room, he somehow manages to pull Namjoons blanket away, steps on Yoongis foot and blinds Jimin with his flashlight, resulting in another round of complaints and groans.
Before anything else can happen, Yoongi pulls the blanket over his chin and wills himself to go back to sleep. He's had enough interruptions for one night. His mind is getting fuzzier and the slow dripping helps to drift off quickly. He can hear the others breathing steadily, this time no snoring can be heard.
Suddenly something grabs his shoulder.
His eyes fly open and he can feel his pulse racing. A figure is hovering above him, the silhouette barely discernable in the darkness and if it weren't for said figure calling him 'hyung' he would've probably started screaming right then and there. He's a scaredy cat, so what?
Once his brain has somewhat woken up, he recognizes Hoseok's voice calling him and angrily whispers back:"What?". He has to control himself really hard to keep his voice down, but he somehow manages.
"I need to pee, but I'm too scared of the woods. Can you come with me?" Yoongi hesitates. He's really comfortable right now and leaving the safety off his bed to wait alone in front of the bathroom stall is the least appealing thing he can think of. What if some monster comes and gets him?
If it was him instead of Hoseok asking for help though, he'd hope one of the others would take pity on him.
He pushes his blanket down, shivering as the cold air hits him and a yawn threatening to come out. He was just getting warm and comfortable. Slightly more awake now, the idea of being in the dark alone sounds even less appealing, so he wakes up Jungkook, asking him to join as well. He looks strong enough, could probably fight off a monster if it came to it.
Jungkook isn't exactly ecstatic over having to get up at not even 5:30am, but Yoongi can live with that if it means he'll have some company. The three of them manage to sneak out without waking anyone else, even the door not creaking this time around.
As soon as he steps outside Yoongi wishes he would've thought to bring his blanket. The air is even chillier here and goose bumps are quickly spreading on his skin. Trying to keep in some of the warmth, he crosses his arms over his chest.
He's always been one to freeze easily. Like many times before, shivers are now running down his spine and he has to bite his lip to keep his teeth from chattering. The other two seem more warm blooded, they're out here in tshirts and show no signs of being cold yet.
Of course they forgot to bring their phones, the only light source being the tiny crank flashlight Jungkook found in the depths of his pockets.
It's eerily quiet, only the sound of Jungkook winding of the flashlight can be heard. The light beam keeps flickering, briefly illuminating the world around them. They carefully climb down a set of stairs and it's a miracle nobody slips on the wet moss covering them.
Finally reaching the bathroom, Yoongi tries blowing into his hands to keep them somewhat warm, but sadly finds himself only moderately successful. He starts coughing a little from the cold air in his lungs, flinching when an icy drop of water lands on his neck. Branches of trees are creepily hovering above and that sight alone causes another full body shiver.
Luckily it stopped raining earlier, but the smells of wet wood and soil still linger in the air. A strong gust of wind tousles his hair and Yoongi grimaces while hugging himself to keep warm. Jungkook is jumping up and down next to him before resorting to jogging in place. Seems like he's not the only one freezing anymore.
At least Hoseok doesn't take too long on the toilet and they're quickly on their way back to the main cabin. Even though they've been out here some while, it doesn't get any less creepy. With the dim lights of the bathroom gone, Yoongi feels the world around him seems even darker.
An owl hoots nearby, Yoongi and Hoseok jump and let out some high pitched screams before half hugging each other and grabbing Jungkook's arms with their free hands. Hoseok is staring right back at him with wide, panicked eyes.
The youngest just shakes his head, drops their hands and continues walking while the older two are still recovering from the shock. This is exactly why Yoongi didn't want to leave the cabin at night.
For safety reasons he grabs Hoseoks hand and keeps holding it tightly until they reach the cabin. Hoseok's palm is getting a bit sweaty, but Yoongi doesn't find it in himself to mind. He's tired, scared and just wants to be back on his sleeping mat. Or even better in his own bed at home.
The door slips open with some joined effort, nobody else waking up. Slipping past Jungkook, Yoongi heads straight for his mat, tugging the blanket around him and curling up on himself. He can't handle any more disturbances tonight.
As usual Yoongi wakes up relatively early, his inner clock always in work mode. His phone tells him it's only 7:45am, so he stays in bed a little longer, checking his notifications. A few ads, but no new messages. To be expected, since the only person who texts him regularily outside of work is laying three sleeping mats apart from him.
One ad for a new speaker peaks his interest though and he finds himself scrolling through the product description and reviews. They seem to love it, so maybe once he's back it Seoul it's time to treat himself to some new equipment. He definitely deserves it after what he's going through here.
Even after spending time on his phone the rest of the group is still fast asleep, so Yoongi untangles himself from his blanket quietly, gathers fresh clothes from his suitcase and makes his way to the bathroom to wash up. A quick wash has to do, he only scrubs his face and body with a washcloth, brushes his teeth and gets changed. It feels good to finally get rid of the remnants of smoke clinging to him and his old clothes.
On the way back to the cabin he stops for a moment, admiring the view. The sun is rising over the ocean, casting a sparkling orange light onto the waves. Some boats are leaving the harbour and he can even see a jetski making its rounds.
For a moment he wonders why he doesn't sparkle like the waves, but he quickly shakes his head to push these thoughts away. He shouldn't have agreed to that Twilight marathon with Jin a few nights ago.
Maybe it's because he's so used to Seoul, the skyscrapers, many cars and polluted air. The last time he remembers being in nature like this was the hike to Achasan Mountain Seokjin forced him to join. Even then the main view had been Seouls skyline, nothing like here where it's just the small houses on the coast and the wide ocean.
On most days he wakes up on the tiny coach in his studio or even on his chair with his head on the desk, his back aching and regrets of not going home in the evening filling his mind. He doesn't even have any windows in his studio, so he can never be too sure whether it's the middle of the day or night.
He takes in the view for another moment, before tearing his gaze away and making his way back. He wants to use the time while he others are still sleeping wisely. It may be the only peace and quiet he gets during this week.
A bar of soap is resting on a tree stump near the cabin, probably left there yesterday by one of the others. Despite telling himself he wouldn't use the basin at all, Yoongi decides to at least rinse off yesterday's clothes. Maybe he can get the burnt smell out of the fabric.
The air is already warming up, no longer leaving him shivering, and with the sun out he may be lucky that the clothes dry before noon.
He inspects the water in the basin thorougly before putting any of his clothes inside, coming to the conclusion that despite the rather run-down look of everything the water seems clean enough. It's clear and except for a few dead insects there's nothing swimming in it.
The tshirt is first, he lathers it in soap and rinses until there's no more greyish water dripping out of it. He's not satisfied until soap bubbles are all over his hands and shirt and the water is clear once again.
After looking over his pants for any stains, he only finds a couple of splashes of dried mud on the bottom of the legs. Luckily Hoseok caught him when he almost fell yesterday, otherwise he would've had a lot more work to do.
While soaking the dirty parts, he gets to washing his socks and underwear. It doesn't take too long, one sniff of the socks confirms that he did a good job and they smell fresh again. The soles are still a little greyish, but he guesses it must be from the soot probably lingering on every surface in the house.
Lastly he tries to wring out as much of the water as possible, leaving his clothes damp. He finds a cord attached to two poles and even some clothespins next to it. While he's hanging up his clothes, he can hear the door sliding open with a creak and footsteps coming closer.
"Do you want coffee?", Namjoon's tired voice interrupts his thoughts. Yoongi turns around, mustering the portable stove, kettle and assortment of mismatched mugs next to Namjoon. He gives a small nod to the question and goes back to his task. He's always up for coffee.
When he's done with the clothes, he squats next to the kettle, watching Namjoon trying to figure out the cooking plate. He's pressing every button he can, but it doesn't look like he's going to manage turning it on anytime soon. Yoongi takes pity, showing him how it works and how to adjust the temperature.
They sit in silence, waiting for the water to boil. Yoongi stares at the kettle, trying to will it to boil faster, while Namjoon is distributing some instant coffee powder into mugs. From Makgeolli Bowls to Ikea kids' plastic cups there's everything. Doesn't seem like Seokjin invested very much into tableware.
"Do you need milk or sugar?" Yoongi shakes his head, not taking his eyes off the kettle. "Good because I don't think we have any." Seeing as the water isn't boiling any faster, he starts drawing little shapes into the now dried soil at his feet.
"If you need sugar check Jin hyungs pockets, he usually has some packets because he likes making jokes about being a sugar daddy." Namjoon shakes his head in disbelief, but gets up anyway and comes back a few moments later with some sugar packets in his hands. "What did I tell you?", Yoongi smirks proudly and properly looks up at him for the first time this morning.
One after the other the rest of the group gets up, stumbling out of the door half asleep and heading to the bathroom or sitting with Namjoon and Yoongi. Only Jimin refuses to get up, even kicking Hoseok in the shin when he tries to pull his blanket away.
After some time Jungkook and Hoseok, who washed up first, join them as well. Hoseok is still toweling his hair dry, complaining that there must be a power outage down at the bathroom because the blow driers don't work. Jungkook doesn't seem to mind much, claiming he prefers air drying his hair anyway.
Taehyung and Seokjin are already sitting around the kettle when the bathroom group arrives, still in their PJs, sleepily drinking some coffee and tea with Jin wondering where his sugar supply went.
"Jimin and I are going snorkeling today, I'm so excited!", Taehyung exclaims once his tea helped him wake up some more, "I haven't been snorkeling in ages! And afterwards we wanna get some soulmate bracelets." Namjoon also wants to join, for the snorkeling not for the bracelets, because he wants to take pictures of some crabs at the beach.
Seokjin uses the opportunity to get up, spin around once and announce that he has an important announcement to make.
They all stare at him, waiting for him to go on, but he doesn't. He just stares back expectantly. Yoongi knows what he wants, so he starts clapping slowly, hoping to speed up the whole ordeal.
Only once they give him some applause and halfhearted noises of excitement does he continue. "I might've mentioned it before, but this beauty here", he points to the cabin as if it wasn't obvious what he's referring to, "is actually the annex location. Since the weather is supposed to be better from now on we'll relocate to our main B&B today, so please pack up all your stuff."
There's a groan from Taehyung, who just finished unpacking 15 minutes ago, but Seokjin ignores him and tells them to drink up and get going, while savouring the last sip of coffee out of his own makgeolli bowl.
Jimin wakes up very confused when they're bustling around him, folding their sleeping mats and putting their things back into the suitcases. Seokjin shouts into the chaos:"You can just leave your packed stuff here, I'll make sure it gets to the new location unharmed!". It gets a bit lost with Taehyung asking around who stole his shower gel though. (Nobody did, he just left it in the shower).
Namjoon and Seokjin start carrying the first suitcases to the monorail, not sure how much weight it can really bear, while Jimin is brushing his teeth in the middle of the cabin, still confused why and where they're moving.
Hoseok has some dance workshop thing planned for today, so he, Yoongi and Seokjin set off first. It's even more uncomfortable riding the monorail backwards, but amongst the laughter of the others, Yoongi has to admit it's also somewhat funny.
Hoseok screams when it sets into motion with a creaking sound. Nothing surprising there.
After taking some videos of them Jimin goes back to the cabin to finally pack his things while Seokjin is asking Hoseok questions about dancing to distract him from his fear of the monorail. Yoongi is once again stuck in the middle seat and pretends to not exist.
A black van is already waiting on the side of the street next to Hoseok's stupid electric scooter. They start loading the suitcases into the trunk while Hoseok fixes the music box back onto the handle of the scooter and drives away blasting 'Daechwita'. Seokjin starts cackling and Yoongi pinches the bridge of his nose, feeling a little embarrassed.
He lets Jin wait for the second load of suitcases while getting into the passenger seat himself. Distracting himself by playing a little on his phone and looking up some more gadgets for his studio, the time passes quickly. He even answers some work mails when he's sure Seokjin isn't paying attention to him.
Turns out they miscalculated since Seokjin also had to take the monorail with them this time and poor Jungkook is left behind. Taehyung shouts an apology while the diving group is running down the hill to catch their bus.
It's somewhat comical, Jimin losing one of his flips flops, picking it up and running on with only one shoe before losing that one as well, while Namjoon is struggling with a huge beach bag that threatens to slide off his shoulder with every step he takes. Of course Yoongi snaps a video of them.
All the luggage is in the car now, Seokjin keeps wiping nonexistent sweat and complaining how he has to do everything by himself while shooting Yoongi a dirty look, but they wait the extra 15 minutes for Jungkook to take him with them. He mentioned not having any plans yet and leaving him behind would be extremely mean. He's just a shy kid after all.
When the monorail comes back, Jungkook in the middle seat and his weirdly large camo bag in the front, Seokjin leans out of the car window and shouts:"Jungkook-ah! Taehyung says sorry again, Namjoon misread the bus plan, so they were in a hurry!" Yoongi covers his ears, wondering why he couldn't wait to relay the message until Jungkook was actually in the car.
During the 20 minute car ride down the mountain and towards Hyeonpo Port they have to listen to Seokjin's rendition of Outsider's 'Loner' on repeat. After the sixth time with his rapping not getting any better and Jungkook looking slightly concerned in the backseat, Yoongi asks if they can at least listen to another song.
Seokjin then puts on 'Nevermind', insisting he doesn't want them to miss out on being blessed by his rapping skills. Hearing Jin abuse his own song is somehow worse than it was before and he suddenly wishes for another repeat of 'Outsider'.
During the second run of Nevermind, Jungkook starts giggling in the backseat and Yoongi also feels a grin spreading on his own face. This is just way too ridiculous.
Seconds later the two of them can't stop laughing while Seokjin tries scolding them for "messing up his flow" while also trying to keep rapping. When Jungkook recovers from laughing and joins in on the rapping, doing ten times better than Jin in Yoongi's opinion, the eldest acts all offended and finally switches the song.
Jungkook asks if they can listen to 'eight' since it is his favourite song and of course Jin happily obliges, knowing Yoongi gets very shy when his own songs get played around him.
Turns out Jungkook can not only rap decently but also has an amazing singing voice. Even Jin is quiet when the youngest sings along, begging him for a collaboration once the song is over. Jungkook gets very flustered, blushing deeply, but accepts nevertheless.
Next in the playlist is 'A vacation to me' by Buzz and slowly but surely Yoongi gets roped into the good mood. He starts by mouthing along, but by the time the chorus comes up all three of them are singing/shouting.
Just as 'Loner' starts playing again they arrive at Hyeonpo Port. Yoongi squints against the bright sunlight when he opens the door. After all the storm and grey clouds this is a nice change, but he has sensitive eyes. The air tastes slightly salty so close to the ocean and there's a gentle breeze playing with his hair.
Seokjin also gets out of the car and leads them to a small boat. Yoongi doesn't think he likes where this is going, his good quickly mood dissipating.
They start the cumbersome task of loading all luggage onto the boat, Jungkook carrying two suitcases at once. Yoongi briefly considers pushing Jins hot pink suitcase into the water, but a fixed glare from his hyung let's him know he's been caught.
"Who is driving the boat?", Yoongi asks while still wondering why they would need to take a boat in the first place. "Yoongi-ah what do you think?" "I'm not getting into a boat with you. You don't even have a license!"
Jin starts rummaging in his fanny pack before pulling out a slip of paper. Yoongi squints, it looks a suspicious lot like a license, but that's just not possible. "I have bad eyesight, I don't know what it says." "Just get onto the boat dumbass, you too Jungkook. Trust me, I know what I'm doing!"
A few minutes later Seokjin is speeding straight towards the rocks surrounding the harbour with the other two screaming behind him. "Hyung go left, go left!", Yoongi shouts, while Jungkook points to the opening on the left to make sure Seokjin knows which way to go.
What feels like moments before a crash, he finally steers into the right direction, laughing maniacally. "I told you I know what I'm doing, I was just messing with you! Don't you think I see there's rocks?" "You were joking?!", Jungkook exclaims in disbelief. Yoongi makes eye contact with him and can tell neither of them find the joke very funny.
He might be hallucinating again from the shock, because it seems like there's some big yellow island floating in the sea, just a short distance from the harbour basin. Why else would it be there if it wasn't for his imagination playing a joke on him?
For some reason seems to head straight towards the strange island. "Uh hyung, what is this?", Jungkook asks, sounding equally confused as Yoongi feels. "This my friends", Seokjin turns around with open arms, "is my B&B" "Hyung, don't let go of the steering wheel! Please!"
Yoongi takes a good look at the island, still blinded by the sun reflecting off the water, but finally able to tell that the yellow things are actually walls. That realization doesn't do anything to lessen his confusion though. "But where's the B&B? This is just a huge playground."
And it really is. From what he can tell with his subpar eyesight, there are at least two slides, one of them leading straight into the sea. He thinks there's also a net used for foot volleyball and a ping pong table, but he isn't a hundred percent sure. He still doesn't fully trust his mind.
On the wall to the left are some protruding platforms, but he can't for the life of him figure out what they're supposed to be. Maybe an adult sized jungle gym? If it is there's no way he's going to use that, he has a pretty bad fear of heights, thank you very much.
"You're looking straight at it! This is where we're going to live for the next 6 days!" "Huh?! Are those slides?", Jungkook wonders with big eyes, "Is this a prank?" Yoongi knows it isn't. He knows Seokjin too well.
"Oh come on guys, allow a little fun into your lifes! This is the best house ever and you're acting like it's a punishment." "That's not even a house.", Yoongi counters, "it's a wall." "Wait until you see it up close, you won't want to leave ever again!"
Yoongi doubts it very much. He already misses his studio. That's the one place he wouldn't mind staying in forever, but definitely not this playground-house-thing or whatever it is.
The boat docks onto a part of the platform and Jungkook helps Seokjin tying the ropes to some hooks. How he knows how to do the proper knots, only god knows. Yoongi is very sure that tying knots wasn't part of his own school education.
When asked about it, Jungkook just shrugs and finishes tying the last knot, then checks if it's secure enough. "I don't have that many friends, so when i get bored i just teach myself new skills with Youtube." "Oh that's how I learned sewing as well!"
Jin looks confused for some reason. "You can sew?" Yoongi wonders if this is supposed to be a joke. "Of course~", he whines, "Remember, I sewed your pants that one time when they ripped during rehearsal for your show! No one could tell."
He takes Jungkooks outstretched hand to climb onto the island with just a minor stumble. The waves are much smaller than yesterday, but the ground is still swaying slightly. He hopes he won't be seasick.
On a second look he finds the island isn't an island at all, but a barge that has a garden area in front of the strange yellow building. What exactly he's looking at, he's still not too sure. There are indeed a foot volleyball net, a ping pong table and even a goal for soccer in this yard, though he's sure if they actually tried to play more balls than not would end up in the water.
"Come on, I'll give you a tour of the place before we unload the rest of the luggage." Seokjin is already walking towards the wall on the right, giving a small wave with his hand to make sure they follow him. Jungkook moves first while Yoongi's mind is still busy processing. This is insane.
As they turn the corner, Yoongi is faced with one of his worst nightmares. A climbing wall.
Completely frozen, he stares at Seokjin in horror. There are two harnesses attached to an auto belay, but even that doesn't do much to make him feel comforted. He's scared of heights and he's not sure he really trusts the belaying system to catch him in case he falls.
Jungkook on the other hand seems more than excited, almost vibrating in place and obviously holding himself back from immediatly climbing up to listen to Seokjins instructions. "Up there", he points to an opening three metres above, "is the only entrance. The slides may only be used as exit, it's forbidden to climb up on them. I have an eye on you, especially you Yoongi." He motions with his index and middle finger between his own eyes and Yoong to accentuate his point. Message received.
He watches as Jungkook demonstrates the easiest ways to climb and and he watches Seokjin failing to do the same, doing nothing to make Yoongi feel better about the whole ordeal. After jumping down three times, the eldest finally makes it and with a last ounce of strength pulls himself onto the platform.
Now they're both watching him expectantly from above and Yoongi hates feeling exposed like that, still frozen in place. Sure, he's not unathletic and he thinks he should be strong enough to get up there, but his legs are already shaking from just the thought of climbing up the wall.
Ignoring the others, he makes his way to the slide, climbing up in hopes that Seokjin may be persuaded if he looks really pitiful. He knows his hyung loves to baby him sometimes and usually can't resist his cuteness, so he's unashamed to take full advantage of that fact today.
As expected, Seokjin is standing at the top of the slide, effectively blocking his way. Yoongi looks up with his best puppy eyes and with the biggest pout he can muster, he whines:"Hyu~ung". Is he humiliating himself in front of Jungkook? Maybe. Is it worth it? Apparently not as Seokjin just repeats that the slide is only to be used as an exit.
He crosses his arms over his chest and slides back down, still pouting. It's not his fault he's terrified of climbing.
Jungkook slides down behind him, offering to show him how to put on the harness. "I go to the climbing gym sometimes, so don't worry. I know what I'm doing." Jungkooks skills are the least of his worries right now, he definitely trusts him more than that autobelay.
Jungkook pulls down one of the harnesses and holds it open for Yoongi. He instructs him where to put his feet and helps fastening it around his waist. When it feels tight enough, he explains again what the easiest way to climb up is and tries to reassure him that he won't fall off. Yoongi's not so sure about that.
Standing right in front of the wall and knowing he'll have to climb up just makes it appear even taller than it is. Realistically he knows nothing is going to happen, even if he fell from the top unsecured he likely wouldn't get hurt thanks to the mats cushioning the floor. But right now his brain refuses to listen to any logic.
He shakily grabs the first holds, already feeling his hands getting sweaty. Jungkook shows him which footholds he should start on and Yoongi takes another deep breath before starting his ascent. He's got this.
In the lower part of the wall Jungkook makes sure to guide his feet to the proper holds, reassuring him when he misses a step at first. It's scarier when he can't reach Yoongi anymore to assist, but looking up it's not too much further to go.
As soon as he reaches the handles next to the platform, Seokjin also holds onto the sides of his harness, making sure he won't fall back down now. He helps him out of the harness and Yoongi rolls down the stairs into the room, all his strength having left. His legs feel like cooked noodles, he doesn't think they could hold his weight right now.
He's still recovering, when Seokjin starts explaining the layout. "Over there is the way down to the kitchen and eating area.", he motions to a pole that disappears below a trap door. Yoongi slams his head against the floor where he's laying, willing himself to wake up from this nightmare.
There's not a single chance he will slide down that pole.
But Seokjin's already opening the trapdoor, beckoning Jungkook over to try the pole first. The youngest actually laughs as he slides, obviously thinking it's great fun. Yoongi has concerns though. "How do we get back up?" "Oh you climb up the pole." "Excuse me?"
Is that even possible? Maybe if you're strong like Jungkook, but Yoongi already knows there's zero chance he'll make it. He does his fair share of sports, occassionally playing basketball with his brother or attending dance classes at the company, but he certainly doesn't have the right muscles for this.
In the end they convince him to at least try and with Jungkook promising he'll lift Yoongi up if he can't climb up on his own he feels at least somewhat reassured he won't be stuck down there for the rest of his life.
The slide down isn't too bad, Yoongi has enough playground experience from his childhood. He used to pretend to be a firefighter a lot, okay?
Downstairs he's met with a similar layout as in the mountain annex. There's a big space on the floor with 7 small cabinets and Yoongi assumes it's the sleeping area. Would go hand in hand with Seokjin's theme of cooking and sleeping in the same space.
In front of the open area is a big cauldron as well as another portable stove. Seokjin runs to get the groceries he brought from the boat and even he struggles to get up the pole, so they have to push his feet a little.
He comes back a short while later, trying to hand them the groceries. When they can't reach the basket from the bottom and Seokjin refuses to drop it because of the glass bottles, Jungkook gets one of the little plastic chairs.
It's not an easy operation, but Yoongi climbs onto the plastic chair with Jungkook holding tightly onto his waist. It more wobbly than he expected, thanks to the mats surrounding the base of the pole. He uses the pole to stabilize himself as he reaches for the basket, this time with success.
They start putting away the groceries, sorting which ones have to go into the fridge and which ones are fine to be left out in the open. Jungkook and Seokjin keep on disagreeing and arguing over which foods belong where, so Yoongi has to do most of the work by himself.
Once all of that is done begins the difficult mission of getting back up into the second floor again. Seokjin goes first, climbing the pole with some sliding and a lot of effort, but he somehow makes it without assistance this time.
Yoongi doesn't even attempt it on his own, already knowing he won't be able to make it. Instead Jungkook lets him climb onto his shoulders before standing up. Yoongi has enough body tension to prevent himself from wobbling, but he's still not high up enough. He's about to resign to his fate of staying in the kitchen forever, when Seokjin has another idea.
To help they decide to put a life jacket on him. On the second try he jumps up onto the pole from Jungkook's shoulders while Seokjin grabs the life jacket and pulls. With Jungkook pushing against his feet from below, they somehow manage to rescue him.
He's certain he must've seen everything this insane B&B has to offer by now, but he's thought wrong, Seokjin decides to show them the beds next, because apparently the area downstairs isn't meant to be used for sleeping after all.
Turns out the strange platforms protruding from the wall Yoongi was able to see earlier are their beds. There are several small windows to climb up onto the beds, some higher up than others.
He's about to protest again, because this is the one thing they really won't get him to do. He won't be able to get a moment of rest if he knows he's five metres above ground, safety belts or not. He's rather sleep on the cold floor without any cushioning.
But apparently it's the one time Seokjin has also thought ahead. "I knew you and Hoseok would be too scared, so your beds are further down. There are ladders from the bottom to reach them." He seems to know Yoongi well enough to know how far he can push him at least.
Taking a look at his bed from the lawn, he has to admit it's not too terrible. It's still around a metre above ground, but he can handle that. Besides, going down the slide is actually pretty fun, so he's not mad he'll have to use it whenever he wants to go to bed.
Seokjin then wanders off again to start unloading their luggage from the boat with Jungkook's assistance. The youngest also shows him how to get the suitcases to the second floor with one of the ropes and carabiners of the climbing wall, while Yoongi is allowed to take some of the smaller luggage up the slide. Anything but the climbing wall, he thinks with a shudder.
It doesn't take them too long, afterwards Seokjin claims he has some more things to check out and prepare, so Yoongi and Jungkook are left to their own devices. Yoongi has claimed one of the hammocks in the garden area for himself, while Jungkook is laying in the grass.
By now the sun is burning down on them and Yoongi reminds himself he'll have to put on some more sunscreen soon if he doesn't want to end up red like a tomato tomorrow. He basks in the warmth, almost drifting off the sleep with the breeze on his face and the sounds of the waves in the background.
His peace gets disturbed by the grumbling of his stomach though. Right, because they're guests in the only Bed & Breakfast that doesn't serve any breakfast.
Pushing the sunglasses a bit further up his nose, Yoongi checks his phone and has to find out it's barely noon. Sure, he could busy himself with some music to pass time, but it also seems like Jungkook's getting bored. He's pulling out some of the grass strands and keeps shifting around.
"Do you want to get something to eat?" Those young kids are always hungry, right? "Where? Here?"
He shakes his head, not too keen to descend into the kitchen again. "I'll ask hyung to get us back to land and we can check out some cafés or restaurants." Jungkook agrees and of course Yoongi can convince Seokjin to take a break from his 'very important work' to drive them back to Hyeonpo Port.
On the ride Seokjin tells them they'll have Kimchi Fried Rice in the evening and asks Yoongi to bring back some eggs as well. Yoongi already knows this means he'll be cooking, as Seokjin always claims he doesn't know how to cook rice himself. Who can't cook rice? It's the easiest thing in the world except maybe noodles.
At Hyeonpo Port they agree to meet up at 4:30pm, because that's also when the rest of the group said they would be back. "Are you hungry? Should we get something to eat first?", Yoongi asks, eager to get some food into his stomach. Jungkook nods while looking around, probably searching the coastline for restaurants.
They stroll around for a while, taking pictures of the city and of each other every now and then. Once they stop to pet a stray cat and Jungkook has to convince Yoongi to keep going. He would've adopted that cat on the spot if it wasn't for Holly.
Overall everything is very peaceful, so different from the always busy atmosphere back in Seoul. Yoongi doesn't feel any urge to rush, taking his time to soak all the impressions up. It kind of reminds him of the vacations he used to take with his parents back in his childhood. They would usually travel to some smaller unknown cities to unwind from the stress of everyday life.
In an alleyway just off the main street they end up in front of a tiny restaurant. From the outside it looks old and rather run-down, but through the windows they can see the lovingly furnished interior. An amazing smell wafts from the tilted window and it only takes one look at Jungkook to know he likes it as well.
Yoongi enters after Jungkook and they're immediatly greeted by a sweet elderly lady. She seats them in a cozy booth where Yoongi falls against the cushioned seat with a sigh. He can finally relax knowing there are no climbing walls in sight. After a quick look at the menu they order some lambskewers, a coke for Yoongi and banana milk for Jungkook.
While waiting for their food to arrive, Yoongi decides it's time to learn some more about Jungkook. Since his arrival the youngest has been pretty quiet and didn't partake too much in the conversations, instead preferring to just listen, similarily to Yoongi. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that it's not easy to get a word in with how loud the others are being most of the time.
"So why did you want to come here? I heard you guys all had to apply for this thing." "I didn't actually want to, well at least at first.", Jungkook says after taking a sip from his milk. "What changed your mind?", Yoongi wonders.
"I mean I'm sure you can tell, but I'm not the most outgoing person there is. Back in highschool and even now I'm always sort of an outsider because I'm too shy and quiet to approach the others. I really wanted to apply when i first saw something about this on twitter, but then i thought I'd be too boring anyway and getting rejected would hurt me more than not applying at all."
Yoongi nods along, he can somewhat relate to parts of Jungkooks story. He too used to be the awkward shy kid back in school who struggled to find friends. Even now he would probably be rather lonely if it wasn't for Jin dragging him along wherever he went.
"When I'd already given up on the idea and accepted i'd spend the whole sommer holidays alone in my room, I was listening to music. And some of the lyrics just spoke to me, making me realize I shouldn't just give up like that because if i'm not even trying then it's kind of on me if I can't move forward in life."
"What song did you listen to?", Yoongi asks, always interested in finding new songs he might be able to use as inspiration for his own. Also he just likes songs that give you strength and hope in dark times.
"You might know it, I think the artist is also working with Bighit. Maybe you even helped working on the song, but that would be crazy, right?" Yoongi laughs it off, but he knows if it's by a Bighit artist there's a high chance he was involved somewhere along the way.
"Anyway the artist is Agust D and the song is Nevermind, you know the one we listened to in the car earlier. A part of the lyrics goes 'If you feel like you're going to crash then accelerate more, you idiot' and that's what changed my mind in the end."
Yoongi stays quiet, not sure how to react. He's grateful the lady chooses that moment to bring their lambskewers and Jungkook, taken over by his hunger, dives right in, seemingly forgetting their previous conversation.
He never knows how to react when someone compliments his music or tells him how it helped them. For once it's because he's very bad at receiving compliments, but also because he wants to stay anonymous. People knowing it's him behind the aliases would be too much pressure. He's not sure he could handle strangers staring at him, judging him and knowing what he's been through or how many mental health issues he has.
Over lunch he tells Jungkook some more about his own life, especially during school and now working with an entertainment company. It seems like it comforts Jungkook knowing that other people face similar struggles as him and still manage to be successful.
"So far you seemed so cool and confident. You weren't afraid to share your opinion if you didn't like something and you had no issue having conversations with the others.", Jungkook mumbles between two bites.
"I guess being friends with Jin hyung for years does change you. That and having to work with many different people definitely helped me being more outgoing when necessary. But a lot of it is also an act, a persona if you will. I don't really like changes and it's usually draining for me to meet strangers, so I act confident and uninterested to mask my anxieties."
"That doesn't sound that healthy to be honest." Yoongi just shrugs. "It probably isn't, but it's how I've learned to cope over the years. I have social anxiety and depression, there are better phases and worse, but Jin hyung has always been trying to push my limits. I usually hate it at first, but he knows how far he can take it and after a while i do have to admit it was good for me."
Yoongi doesn't know why he's telling all this to essentially a stranger, but it feels like the words just keep coming out.
Jungkook nods, deep in though. "I think it's good to have someone who can push you out of your comfort zone sometimes. I hope I'll also find a friend who is like Jin hyung. So far I'm sure though this whole vacation might help me already. So many of the others seem super outgoing, I don't think they'll leave many opportunities for me to seclude myself." That he can definitely agree with.
It's silent for a while, but then Yoongi notices Jungkook chewing the same piece of lamb for minutes while staring off into nothing. "What is it?", he asks softly, not wanting to scare the other.
Jungkook musters him for a moment before admitting:"I'm proud of myself for coming here and I mean I've been having fun so far, but I can help but be scared and feel like I'm in over my head, you know? They're all so loud and easygoing and confident...I just can't seem to figure out where I fit into that dynamic."
Yoongi hums, resting his chin on his palm and offers a hopefully reassuring smile. "I told you I have social anxiety, right? Besides that I'm terrified of heights, climbing and the ocean. I also don't do too well with loud noises. So don't worry, you're not the only odd one out. It's okay to be scared, nothing wrong with it. Let's just be scared together then, Jungkook-ah, makes it less lonely."
He doesn't know why he feels so protective of the younger, perhaps because he reminds him so much of himself. He would've needed someone who could've related to him instead of always being told he should work harder to fit in with everyone else when he was younger. Having his lacks pointed out to him all the time only served to make him feel even more alone amongst his peers.
In any case, the way Jungkook lights up, his whole posture relaxing and letting out a deep sigh isn't what Yoongi expected. Maybe this is good for both of them. Maybe he can give Jungkook the support and guidance that he always used to long for while also learning more about himself.
After finishing all the food and Yoongi paying, they wander the streets some more, checking out a few of the local shops and Jungkook buying some souvenirs for his family.
They somehow end up in front of a dance studio, just as Hoseok leaves from his workshop. It takes him to time to spot the two of them, but once he does he excitedly starts waving with a huge smile on his face.
Yoongi starts smiling as well and timidly waves back, a little embarrassed in front of the other students who are leaving at the same time. Hoseok comes over and immediatly starts telling them about the class with sparkling eyes.
He gets even more excited when Yoongi asks him some technical questions and shares that he also dances pretty regularily. "Do you also dance, Jungkook-ah?", Hoseok asks while leaning over to look past Yoongi at the youngest. He certainly has good social skills, immediatly noticing how quiet Jungkook has been and including him in the conversation, Yoongi observes.
When Jungkook shakes his head and says he considered trying but was scared of joining a studio, Hoseok claps his hands multiple times and suggests they could teach him some of the basics. Jungkook mumbles he'll consider it and get back to them about it.
One looks at the clock tells them they'll have to hurry a bit to get back to the port in time. Seokjin doesn't like to be left waiting. Hoseok already returned his scooter to the rental shop, so now they're all on foot.
Turns out Jungkook doesn't just look very athletic, he can also run super fast. While the other two are lagging a bit behind, Hoseok starts singing one of Seokjin's songs:"Yah, Jungkook-ah! Dasi run run run, nan meomchul suga eobseo" This almost sends Yoongi into a laughing fit and he barely manages to keep himself from stumbling.
Just in time Yoongi remembers they still have to buy eggs, so they hurry into the next supermarket they see, arguing whether to buy 1 or 2 packs of eggs. In the end they get two because Jungkook is sure they'll probably need 7-8 eggs if they want to add some into the fried rice later on.
Seokjin is already waiting by the port for them, but the snorkeling team isn't even in sight yet. While the three of them board the boat and chat some more, the others only come running ten minutes later, claiming the bus was late. Yoongi suspects it was just poor planning on their part or Namjoon getting too caught up with his crabs.
Back at the B&B the ones who haven't gotten a tour yet are astonished. Yoongi is somewhat glad when he sees Hoseok having a similar reaction to the climbing wall as he himself earlier did. The second time around he still feels scared, but not as much as before. He still insists on the harness though.
While Seokjin gives another tour, Yoongi decides to get started on cooking dinner. Luckily there's a small window on the first floor, so he doesn't have to transport the eggs down the pole. He slides down and Jungkook hands him the cartons through the window.
When the tour finishes in the kitchen, most of them get back up to play some games outside, but Hoseok decides to stay behind with him. He doesn't really need help, the rice is already cooking nicely and ready to be transferred into the cauldron, but if Hoseok wants to stay he doesn't mind.
Yoongi absentmindedly stirs the rice while he can hear the faucet turning on behind him. At least they have a chimney here, but sadly that doesn't prevent his arms from getting tired. It's not easy stirring rice for 7 very hungry people. His eyes also still tear up a little from the smoke and he can't help wiping at them every now and then.
Behind him Hoseok is humming some pop song while washing the dishes, insisting they should be cleaned before the first use. Like this they each do their own thing for a few minutes.
While he's still wondering if the rice would burn on the bottom of the cauldron if he stopped stirring for a bit, he notices that the other man stopped humming. Usually he'd prefer this, but for some reason he doesn't like Hoseok being quiet.
But then again it's none of his business and not like he really cares (at least that's what he tells himself), so Yoongi busies himself by adding some kimchi to the fried rice. Of course he has to focus very much on properly combining the ingredients and isn't just trying to ignore that there's clearly something bothering Hoseok.
It's even more obvious when the sounds of plates and bowls clinking against each other cease completely.
"You said you work in the music industry, right?" Yoongi stills, waiting if there's more to the question. When there isn't, Yoongi spares him a look over his shoulder and gives a small nod. Hoseok doesn't say anything else, so he assumes the conversation is over. He'll never understand smalltalk.
Yoongi is adding onions and scallions into the sizzling rice when Hoseok finally decides to speak up again. "Have you ever had anything to do with lyrics writing or music production?" He shrugs. Hoseok doesn't need to know that that's like 99% of his job. "Sometimes I guess."
They each go back to doing their own thing and Yoongi can slowly find himself getting annoyed at Hoseoks behaviour. To distract himself he starts heating up the small electric cooking plate to make some fried eggs.
"How did you first get started?" "With what?", he asks, somewhat distracted with figuring out the stove. "Songwriting. And producing as well. It seems difficult." "Not really, once you get used to it it's pretty easy."
He thinks back to the beginnings back in Daegu. His goal back than was to become a world star, he wanted to prove everyone around him wrong. He's not sure what started his interest in music, but once the flame had been lit he couldn't imagine doing anything else. Over the time his interest shifted from becoming an idol to working behind the scenes though.
"For writing I just carry around a notebook and scribble down whatever comes to my mind. Or if I don't have it with me I put in into my notes app. When I'm writing a song I just look back over all my notes and usually get some good ideas."
"As for production I just taught myself how to use a free program with youtube and started playing around with some beats. Over time i got better and better, it's mostly just practice. You have to figure out what sounds good and what goes well with your thoughts behind the song as well as the lyrics."
Looking back at Hoseok again, he mumbles:"Why are you asking?" The other shrugs, not even turning around, so Yoongi can only take a look at his back. "No reason, it's stupid really. Just forget I asked."
He's not satisfied with that response, it's clearly not nothing if it puts Hoseok so deep in though, but then the others start sliding into the kitchen area and he doesn't think Hoseok wants to have that conversation with everyone listening.
After dinner and some board games they're all in their beds, the belts around their waist safely fastened. It kind of crazy to feel the soft rocking of the waves, hearing all the sounds of nature while staring right into the sky.
They aren't far from shore, but it still feels like the stars shine much brighter than usual. Maybe it just seems that way because in Seoul there are always lights.
Namjoon quietly tells them about different constellations, but because he's on one of the top bunks no one can see which stars he's pointing at. They're all pretending like they understand what he's talking about though.
"I think with the sky this clear it might even be possible to see Uranus in a few nights when there's a new moon." There's some giggling from the beds above and Yoongi thinks he can make out Taehyung and Jimin whispering something about 'ur anus'.
With that he drifts off to sleep, hoping to be far away enough from Namjoon to not get woken up by his snoring.
Notes:
Seems like Jungkook and Yoongi got to know each other a little better.
Perhaps being forced to rely on each other during the stay will make it easier for Yoongi to form connections with the other guys?As always I'd be very happy about some comments!
