“He ain’t nobody’s dog,” Daryl growled, stepping between Harry and the man trying to grab him.
“Move,” Vernon barked, face red with rage.
But Daryl didn’t move. Not an inch.
“He’s a kid,” he said, low and dangerous. “And you don’t lay another fuckin’ hand on him.”
Harry stared, stunned. No one had ever stepped in for him like that, not once. And now this man, this gruff stranger with a crossbow and too many scars, was looking at Vernon like he’d end him without hesitation.
Something in Harry’s chest cracked open.
Maybe, for once, he wasn’t alone.
