First of all, this is tremendous writing. I love the stylizations of conversations from the right. The whole piece is very poetic, the interludes are so well constructed and the way you reveal more information, reveal character, is so great.
I was already an emotional wreck with tears growing in my eyes but when I got to this: "(Ben can only swallow. He doesn’t know. And yet he does. Rabbi means teacher, after all, and even if he’s teaching physics and not Torah Talmud midrash—)" Fuuuuck fuck fuck fUUUUUCKKKK!! What you were doing all along it was genius! FUCK!
This story is really fucking relevant to my Jewish experience and I feel it really hard. Ben is a woobie. Rey is a delight. This culture and this context and this story are perfect. Thank you.
Ahhh I'm so glad it was meaningful for you, and that you felt it so intensely. I felt it very intensely while writing it and I'm glad that resonated out. The Rabbi/teacher thing for me was such a !!! moment when I thought of it, so I'm glad that one hit home :D
