Comment on Always Read the Fine Print

  1. Hahah I admit, your fic (and the lack of Teldryn fics) totally inspired me to write one. In fact, Now Read the Fine Print features an homage/reference to your lovely lovely work in the end notes since reading From the Ashes gave me the kick in the pants to try a Skyrim fic finally. I've had this character rattling in my head, and since I usually write MCIT (modern character in Thedas for the Dragon Age fandom) stories, it felt like I didn't want to stick Vera into yet another DA fic because it'd be too much ficbleed between the existing WIPS.

Honestly, I've been writing an OC/MGIT Solasmance from DA for so long that one... gets very used to sharing LIs. Teldryn is a bit of a rare pair -- little rowboat ship after the typical ocean liner, as it were.

As to the Nord, yes THAT Nord. Essentially, you've already got Solstheim covered as far as I'm concerned, and I wouldn't do it justice anyway (and it would feel too similar) so instead I decided to start from the beginning, with Teldryn's backstory and ya know "My Previous Patron." So this is pretty much a prequel to the game, fleshing out why the Nord went off to kill an entire camp of bandits on his own :-D

    1. There's plenty of room for Teldryn love, I say! And I'm a little jealous of your writing speed! 5k words in a matter of days? I can only dream of that kind of productivity! The very best I did in one day was still less than 2k and I'm pretty sure I was unable to write anything else for like a week.

      1. Ha! I do write fast - when I'm able to sit down and write that is - but honestly 5k is not the norm. I'll binge write chunks and then it's crickets for months. lol That sort of productivity is partly the effect of working on a new project, the early chapters are always easier (before you start getting bogged down with plot continuity and characterization). And come on, you're not slow -- looking at the dates, didn't you put almost 100k down in a matter of just 3 months? That's incredibly fast.

        1. Hah, I wish! I've been writing mine since about mid-December 2018. I only started posting on AO3 in June, but I've been on ffnet this whole time.

Yeah, I have noticed my progress slowing now that things are getting heavier, and also I'm not really working with as many preset in-game situations as before so I have to sit and do a lot more planning!

          1. Yes! Once you go off-rails, it gets way way slower, because you don't have that structure to lean on. This is happening with the other fics I'm writing, because eventually I veered off into AU and now I actually have to think about PLOT and STRUCTURE -bangs head on desk-
Which is probably why I'm now sandboxing in skyrim for a bit ;)

Ohh I started with AO3 first - FF's writer/reader interaction feature is a pain in my side, and the interface is tragically clunky. I post there too now, but it's definitely not my favorite platform (Idk how different the readership is in your experience?)

            1. Ugh! I didn't sign up for all this thinking! I just wanted to write about sexy, sexy elves! :P

It's pretty clunky, I'll agree with you there. I do like the stats page better, though. I'm not really sure yet how to compare the readership, to be honest. It's a bit early for me to feel I can make an assessment, though I do agree it's so much easier to interact on AO3! I've heard FF has a larger userbase but that doesn't necessarily mean for TES, so not sure how to take that. And that info could be entirely wrong. So basically, I dunno! :P

Haha! So say we all, but your story certainly reflects all the background labor, and the little hints and nudges you drop into it about the world/lore is honestly what got me so invested (aside from the obvious excellent characterization and just amazingly engaging dynamics, and yes yes sexy elves)

Oh, yeah the FF stats page is helpful - though I find myself rarely checking it tbh. I've heard AO3 and ff have slightly different demographics/readership bases (FF i heard skews younger) and sort of different "cultures" but I haven't been on FF for long enough to really be able to tell what the difference is. I almost never write pwp, mostly very plotty stories which lean closer to M, with a mild side of E. One way or another I'm so glad you decided to port your work to AO3 because if you hadn't I probably wouldn't have found it -- and that would have been a real shame.

                1. Awh, well thank you for all the kind words. :)

It wouldn't surprise me that FF would skew younger with it's stricter guidelines, though I've never really seen it enforced, tbh. Either way, it seemed like a good idea to bring mine over here for safekeeping, just in case!
