My inspiration for Ladybug's thoughts on Hawkmoth comes from Chloe and Lila. With Chloe, Marinette just thought she was a brat and a bully (which is true) but then we see her learning a little bit about her background with her mother and we see her trying to help Chloe become a better person (Adrien also helped her see that Chloe was good deep down) and with Lila, we see Marinette mostly hating her for being a liar and manipulating the people around her. In Chameleon, when Lila threaten her in the bathroom she took it pretty bad but yes, it was Adrien again who helped her see that humiliating her would not help the situation and that helping her would be a better approach. We can see that by the end of that episode Marinette changed her attitude completely and responded positively (which in my opinion did work better). Of course neither Adrien nor Marinette know she is more evil than what she looks like. I'm just pointing this out to show that Marinette learned that in fact people can do bad things but it doesn't mean they are 100% evil. I just wanted to show that she has thought about Hawkmoth being more than just a villain. I guess in a way I'm also projecting because, though I think he needs to pay for what he's done, there is still good in Gabriel. We get many glimpses of this in the show. So I like to think that after paying his debt to society and receiving the proper help, he can be a good person.
