I hadn't known about hawthorn's status, but It's interesting. Certain varieties are endangered in Europe, but in the US there are over 200 species, all over the country. There's a lot on the West Coast. In places it's planted happily as a decorative tree which grows up to 30 feet high and is a deterrent to burglars. In Washington State, though, I was surprised to learn, and checked the dates to be sure they were current, English hawthorn is classified as an invasive plant, an entrenched "noxious weed." It grows easily and is hard to remove. Even though it uses official language, you can tell that the Kingcounty.gov site is quite bitter about it.
