    ROTFL! if only jin ling had more aunts, the MDZS-verse would be less chaotic!

    CQL-verse has its own naming conventions--i'll just leave it at that. my charts are for a broader (more historically & culturally accurate) world.

    but as i've mentioned in other replies, i'm not the cultural police, and if authors choose their own conventions and are consistent about it, it's no skin off my nose!

      MDZS/CQL needs more women in general, but also yeees! JinLing may have done well to have more female influences lol.

      Personally, I think it's more important to be true to canon than to history. For instance, 媽 is probably more historically accurate the further back in time you go, but TV convention is to use 娘, and CQL follows that convention, so it'd be really weird to me if characters started calling their mothers 媽. Plus, a lot of the patriarchal stuff could be thrown out if you write around it and fill out the backstories right. After all, none of it is explicit, and we do have two (third implied) examples of female leaders, and Yu Family might be matrilineal.

      I agree that consistency is more important than historical accuracy, though. After all, this is a fantasy world that's already a mash of different things.

        well, since we're quibbling, should use 爹 and not 爸 for father. my familial charts are for modern day and were not drafted specifically for CQL.

        i agree that for FF, compliance to canon is more important than to historical accuracy, especially when canon throws historical accuracy out the window.

          I was really uncomfortable with people having characters use ba and baba, but then I discovered that TV dramas have been lying to me all my life. In fact, 巴 is also an older word, though it was used more generically for male elders at first (the 父 was added to the top later when it came to mean specifically father). Go figure. But while we're in the CQL/MDZS universe, 爹 is 100% more accurate. There is one instance of 媽 in MDZS but no instances of 爸 in either MDZS or CQL.

            thanks for that interesting tidbit into the evolution of the term 爸! i've read that, from an evolution of language perspective the world-over, all kids are taught some variation of "ma" and "ba" to call their parents, so these are definitely terms that were used since way back when. 爹 and 娘 are archaic and high brow, and i guess that's what the period dramas wanted (yes, my exposure to tv series and movies have also shown that these are the preferred terms).

            i've added a note to ch 1 to point out the fact that my familial terms are modern and not the preferred ones in MDZS/CQL. :)

            ahahaha, yes, i've seen this one! i remember one of my reactions at the time was disappointment that a set of terms for nephews and nieces was missing--and that the female presenter overlooked this was ironic. but this YT channel is definitely a great and fun starting resource for the poor kids of immigrants who don't have the luxury of growing up in the culture.

            EDIT: there are also some terms in the canto chart that are variations of the typical ones; this is a regional thing.

              What is the video missing? It covers both 外甥 and 姨甥, right?

              Btw, this must be a regional thing, too, because I hadn't heard of 姨甥 before. All the women I know who have niblings by sisters just call them 外甥(女).

              Terms for grandparents have the most variation, in my experience, and the way people travel and trade cultures, it's hard to nail down what anyone's going to call them at home. I fell like when speaking to outsiders, most people just learn all of the terms and use whatever's most understandable in context. Tbh, if I ever wrote a modern AU, I'd probably just use English, lol.

                i didn't re-watch the whole thing, but i vaguely remember they mentioned 侄 and 外甥 and completely forgot about 姨甥. and yeah, despite the variations, as long as you don't call the relative by the wrong term, that's good enough sometimes!
