Comment on The Clone Wars: Containment

  1. >Do you fish?
Haha, you "caught" me! Indeed I do.

    >Judging by the amount of free climbing that clones do... These guys are impeccably conditioned.
No kidding. I like the idea of them being portrayed as super-soldiers. Not on that super-human level of Spartans (from Halo) or Captain America, but tweaked up humans operating at the peak of our species' limits. Jango Fett with a tune-up.

    >Love that he's reading about history
Maze's reading is one of the few little peaks we get at his character in the books and I love that about him. This story didn't provide a ton of opportunities to explore it, but it seems like something that really changed his lens on life. My friend's Maze-centric story definitely plays around with his reading a bit more, too.

    >I appreciate how Maze isn't some supernaturally effortless...
Maze just struck me as an ARC who takes things very seriously and isn't willing to put his professional pride over making sure he's doing things right. Patience is a character trait I decided was an important part of his niche amongst the rest of the Alphas.

    >I got a bridge to sell you Ogdai
    LOL

    >Uhhh... If a few spec ops guys burst into my place right now...
Yeah, same. If you haven't looked up the Morgukai yet or seen them in the comics, you should check them out. They'd be one scary ass clone army.

    >Oh the species sacrificed for Pantorans for no apparent reason? (Least not one that's clear to me.)
Okay, gotcha. I've listened to most of the new canon Thrawn books and they mention Chiss looking like Pantorans with red eyes. I wasn't familiar with Pantorans, but I'm guessing they show up in the CG Clone Wars and Rebels then.

    >Skorr strikes me as the kind of person who doesn't read the recipe through all the way before he starts cooking, then gets upset at the recipe if anything goes wrong.
A very apt description of Tol Skorr. Gotta say, that would make for a fun cooking show on the Food Network...

    >The clones are CONSTANTLY thinking as a unit/team (and are considerate of their brothers and of the fallen) meanwhile this guy only cares about himself
Yeah, that's a good point. Skorr's a powerful Dark Jedi. Not quite on the level of Ventress, but he's a force to be reckoned with. But being good with a lightsaber only gets you so far when you're up against the level of coordination the clones display. I actually like the guy in the comics, even if he is a total tool, but it was a lot of fun writing him get comeuppance time and again in this story.

    >This fic is making me want to go back to a few that I abandoned somewhere deep in Microsoft Word and re-attempt writing ground combat again.
You should! I'd love to see what you've worked on in the past. Writing action is fun if you've got certain scenarios in your mind that are clear and exciting. It can get a bit tedious to do action scene after action scene, though. I realized I wrote myself into a corner here when I decided, "let's try Star Wars Black Hawk Down." My follow up to this story ended up being a bit more action than I intended, but it was a nice step back. Looking forward to a more character driven plot in my follow up to that. Dialog heavy scenes are just SO much faster and easier to write, I think.
Anyway, I'm subscribed to you here, so I'll be hoping to see some of those ground combat stories show up at some point.

    1. Oh nice! Where do you fish and what are you targeting? How long have you been fishing for? I do saltwater but I haven't been on a boat/charter yet, so I just fish from piers/jetties/the breakwater for now. Just got some new soft plastics that I hope will finally get me a legal sea bass sometime soon, lol. I also want to get a wet suit and learn to dive because apparently there's a ~400 lb giant black sea bass that frequents one of the bay entrance channels around here and I want to see it.

      >Uhhh... If a few spec ops guys burst into my place right now...
      >Yeah, same.
So I'd actually forgotten about this until I read your comment here, but this vaguely reminded me of something that happened a few years back when the Navy was doing some SEAL training at night in the San Diego bay, and a guy walking around a coastal park area saw them in the water and apparently freaked out and starting shooting at them with a BB gun. Nobody was hurt but it was a minor news story at the time that was kind of amusing lol

      >Okay, gotcha. I've listened to most of the new canon Thrawn books and they mention Chiss looking like Pantorans with red eyes. I wasn't familiar with Pantorans, but I'm guessing they show up in the CG Clone Wars and Rebels then.
Yeah I think one or two Pantorans appear in the movies as background characters, but Wookiepedia says that their species was originally Wroonian before it was changed to Pantoran for whatever reason. There are a couple TCW episodes that feature Pantoran characters, notably their senator Riyo Chuchi. (She's an extremely minor character-- for about a month or so I actually thought she was an original character that had somehow gotten popular in fanfiction on this website, haha.)

How are you liking the new Thrawn books? I finished the main new series but lost interest in the Ascendancy one about halfway through the first book. Thinking about it makes me want to go back to the original trilogy and the Hand of Thrawn books.

      >Writing action is fun if you've got certain scenarios in your mind that are clear and exciting.
I have a few, but I feel like I can't start writing them until I draw out maps and can explain to myself *why* they're doing what they're doing. It's easy for me to work out tactical objectives but it really helps if I can fit that into a bigger picture of why those are important.

The one I'm okay with not defining all that for is where commando droids observe a routine patrol to learn about the individual members, then ambush them, kill them, and steal their armor. They impersonate the troopers, get onto the base, and things go downhill from there. Commando droids can fit into trooper armor and were specifically designed for infiltration (and can even pose a real threat to Jedi without needing sheer numbers to overwhelm them,) so I wanted to explore their potential as a real threat. Originally I was going to use all original characters for this but now I'm thinking of using some who we know very little about, just to give them some material. Maybe Yayax squad, or I'll pick an ARC or two and follow them around.

      >Looking forward to a more character driven plot in my follow up to that.
Ah you're working on something else now? Looking forward to it!

      1. I grew up fishing up here in the PNW and don't get out as much as I used to. Did a lot more saltwater fishing as a kid but these days I mostly stick to rivers for salmon, trout and steelhead. There's just so much to go after (bottomfish, squid, bait-fish, crab, shrimp, salmon, tuna, you name it!) and I love eating it all. Clams, mussels and oysters, too! Glad you're having fun getting into it and I wish you luck with the sea bass. I've done a fair bit of snorkeling but have never gotten into diving. Seems like a ton of fun, though, and spearfishing is a whole new game that would be neat to try.

That SEAL training story is pretty funny. Glad no one got seriously hurt...

Oh, I'm still liking the new Thrawn books well enough. I'm almost done listening to the second Ascendency one and I'm sure I'll get to the third at some point. I did like the first set of three better, too. I've read all of Zahn's original ten Legends SW novels and really love most of them. I re-read the original Heir to the Empire trilogy recently but haven't picked up the Hand of Thrawn books for a while. I'm pretty sure the second one still holds the claim for longest Star Wars novel. Ah, the "classics" of Star Wars literature...

Okay, yeah, the commando droids... I'm less familiar with them since they first showed up in the CG series. I just kept catching random episodes of that show when my son was plowing through the series last year. I saw a little bit of that episode where the droids are infiltrating the clones' ranks and it seemed interesting. I do like the idea of featuring Separatist hardware that actually poses a threat to the GAR. And Yayax squad would be great to see in a fic! Rav Bralor's boys!

And yeah, I do have a follow up to Containment that's maybe not quite a direct sequel, but features some of the same characters. It's called Dawn of Darkness (I still hate that name but haven't come up with a new title) and about half of it is up here on AO3. I'm closing in on finishing drafting the last chapter and hoping to get the whole thing posted early in the New Year. It's been a really fun project to work on but has taken me a lot longer to write than I thought it would. It's been feeling good to be actively writing again. :)
