Comment on The Myrrh-Bearer's Gospel

  1. wow, the other story was like kinda funny despite being super-unlikely... but this is just anti-male anti-Christian feminist rage :( it's gleaned from all that gnostic gospel stuff, wow, proof that people really could take things to a diff level, I feel really sorry for you, I think you take this stuff very seriously

    1. Supergirl facing off against Lex Luther

I want to reaffirm what I've already written in the author's note at the start of this fic:

This is a work of fiction. The speculation in this fic is for entertainment purposes only; most sources agree none of the canonical or noncanonical gospels were written by eyewitnesses to Jesus' life, and that the Gospel of Thomas and Gospel of Mary would have been written much later than the synoptic gospels or the Johannine material.

Nothing in this fic should be taken as being indicative of the historical record, or of my own personal theology.

Ths a fic. The premise was, what if the gospels of Mary and Thomas were actually written by Mary of Magdala and Thomas the Apostle, what if the gospel of John was written by St. Joanna, what if Joanna and Mary were in a committed relationship. This is an AU, just like a Harry Potter fanfic where Draco defeats Voldemort or Harry falls in love with Hermione.

Since I am myself a Christian male, I assure you I am neither anti-male nor anti-Christian, although of course I do oppose those who falsely spread hate or intolerance in the name of Christ. That said, I would be surprised if my own feminist values did not express themselves in my writing, here and elsewhere. Of course, the characters in this fic are fictional characters, and should be taken as mouthpieces for my own beliefs only at great peril.

I affirm orthodox Christian teaching as contained in the Nicene and Apostles' creeds. I reject Gnosticism as a heresy because it denies what I understand to be central to orthodox Christian teaching, that which we celebrated yesterday on the Epiphany and in the twelve days of the Christmas season which preceded it: that in the person of Jesus Christ, God entered fully into our human condition and stood with us in our suffering, was born as a vulnerable child, experienced pain and death, and rose again on the third day in glorious victory over death. I consider gnosticism's anti-materialist bias to be ultimately anti-feminist in its privileging of the spirit and mind over the body, whereas in orthodox Christianity the soul consists of the whole, embodied human person and bodies will be raised in the general resurrection on the last day.

Whether or not orthodox Christology applies to the fictional world presented by this fic can, of course, be left to the discretion of the reader.

I'm a fan, so I respond to stories--and so especially the sacred stories of my own faith tradition--with the quasi-midrashic process of remix and transformation, telling new stories which stand in dialogue with the original stories without erasing or overwriting them.

I have to wonder, if the fannish tropes present in this story and "Thou Hast Wounded Me, My Sister" are so unfamiliar to you, how did you find my fic? I'm truly curious.

      1. woaah, what a long comment! I feel like you're a totally different person than the author of those stories, I'm not sure what to believe. I mean, you could be lying (it is the internet, after all)... but maybe if what you say about your beliefs is true, then the voice in your stories is some kind of alter-ego or your writing is a means to experience fantasies that don't suit your beliefs. i'm a writer myself and I know a lot of times that certain characters get totally carried away but I always try and keep conscious that the message of my story matches the belief I'm trying to express (or, the "truth" I'm trying to express, if you believe truth is subjective).

if I interpreted your comment correctly, then I see what you're saying is you're literally letting the characters you invent or encounter (whether Draco in HP or Jesus, already established characters) just... roam? and just run with it.

by all means, correct me if I'm wrong about my interpretation of your comment. i apologize if I've offended you. while I stand by my comment that I feel sorry for the narrator of the story, because I got this truly anti-male, anti-Christian sentiment from it, but if you're neither of those things then it's wrong to say I pity you, so forgive me :)

very interesting way of writing, very unlike how I write but hey, whatever works! I really liked female!Jesus though, hahaha

and as far as how I found your story, I had heard about archiveofourown.org and was thinking of posting some stuff, and Christianity is def a theme in my writing (some of it is dark, some of it very positive) and through my searching "Jesus Christ" on the site I found your stuff!
