oof we're going in HARD already huh? You sure weren't kidding about this being the start of a very different narrative. Man... GOD AND THIS MAKES ME EVEN ANGRIER AT JOHN, TO SEE ARTHUR GO THROUGH THAT AND STILL BE A SPOILED LITTLE SHIT ABOUT HIS OWN KID. UGH. WHAT A FUCKHEAD LOL. I love John, I do, but GOSH FRIGGIN DARN IT.
Also, YES OKAY I ALSO LOVE that you are starting out with more of the commentary on native struggles, I think in the previous version it took a few more chapters before it got there (the chapter where they drove up to the winter lodge), but this one feels very... it's just sort of slipped in, the way that Arthur WOULD mention it, the way he WOULD just casually wear that hat. It feels very... Arthur, to do that LOL and ofc we love the "my stupid dad takes me on a stupid walk for my stupid mental health"
jkfssdfjkd SORRY. I waited too long to explain what happened to Isaac in the first writing and how it made Arthur the way he is. omg John. Yeah. John has his own....issues and stuff and loss like what Arthur suffered doesn't happen to just one person, you know? And Arthur being the bedrock of the sibling group....yeah it had ripple-like effects on the entire family. That's something else that gets addressed, don't worry. but that anger is 100% understandable and it may or may not be the way Arthur feels too but we'll seeeeeeee~
lowkey, Arthur's hat is based on one I own, which you can find online at urbannative or buy at an REI store. it's a native-owned business and that hat is part of my collection of clothing that makes conservatives in my state very upset. Arthur is an ally, even if he's not super well-educated, he wants to support people he loves and yeah if he sees the truth of something, he'll just say it. I wanted to nod to the fact that Valentine is traditional Wapiti tribal land and in theory, it would be common knowledge for people living in the area.
ksldfjdlsk I love writing Hosea and Arthur from a modern perspective, because it opens us up a bit more for them to be more openly affectionate than 1899 would consider 'manly', but also, it's them. So what does that affection look like? Similar to canon: teasing and joking but Arthur is still the dutiful son that worries about his Pa and Hosea IS a menace but he loves his kids, legally adopted and other....feral....redheaded additions....
Okay like... YES Arthur being That Ally who just... Listens and doesn't offer any "input", and doesn't have that EGO about it, you know what I mean? (Also I like how Charles, internally, is like "there's not too many cis white guys who are like him" BUT DOESNT THINK CISHET, aka he DOES NOT want Arthur to be straight lolol)
I've never lived in a rural area, and i mean... California is a weird place where there's like, some of everything, but I DO KNOW a fair bit about gentrification... it's always this really terrible feeling, like... blech. idek how to describe it. TAXES HERE IN CALI TOO are just... sickening.
ANYWAY yessss modern Hosea and Arthur would definitely be a bit more comfortable showing their affection, seeing as Hosea is canonically one of the only people to regularly TOUCH Arthur at all! (All those back pats ;w;) feral redheads hfsdjakl;
