Comment on These Stones Remember

WAHOO!! oh this continues to be a joy to read. i'm really loving how you translate and blend minecraft mechanics into the ways pix interacts with the world, and very curious about this old friend malin mentions! what fun this is :]

(p.s. i am so very charmed that their name is "Malin Riffs" in the sims screenshots you shared, it's so cute that they and pix have the same last name...)

    1. Thank you! I'm having a lot of fun coming up with how Minecraft things work in these sketches. I've often thought that redstone must be heavy - more like kinetic sand than dust - because otherwise it might realistically blow away in any gust of wind. I also feel that it's sulphurous and oily to the touch, so redstone engineers probably have very soft hands ;)

Likewise the soul soil. I wanted a reason why it might slow the player down, so it being sticky made sense. I could picture it being packed down in the bottom of a lantern, like heavy pitch or a thick, gritty resin. And Malin's ability to sense what creature the soul soil came from might give a little hint as to what they are.

I debated about whether or not to include traditional Minecraft mobs in these sketches, as I wanted the world to feel a little more realistic. In the end, I decided on a minimal approach. Yes, skeletal archers only appear in the deep places of the earth, but I probably won't be writing zombies, giant spiders, or drowned into this at all. Creepers... maybe, but the mobs will be rarities rather than hordes every night. If Pix encounters a creeper it'll probably be stationary and camouflaged, and will only hiss to threaten in defence if he gets too close; it won't actively pursue.

Malin Riffs came about because - in The Sims 3 - you need to create a household, and all members of that household bear the same surname. It's rather adorable, I agree, and they're pretty much inseparable. At some point, I'll probably write a side-sketch (or a part of this series of sketches) going into how they met. They've been together for a long, long time.
