I love Nie Huaisang as a mischief maker, and as that devious little planner that no one sees until its too late. I don't think he'll have much opportunity to be devious in this 'verse, unless it's in service to his brother or Lan Xichen, which I could definitely make happen.
I'm pretty sure Lan Zhan was Lan Xichen's whole world up to that point and not having him is like having a hole straight through him. Nie Mingjue might be able to ease some of that in the future, but he'll never be able to take it all away.
I have this image in my head of Lan Qiren as an old battered soldier with so many secrets where the old Emperor and Wei Ying are concerned. He was there. He KNOWS. He just doesn't know how Wei Ying was raised afterward and doesn't realize he's really in it for the best possible outcome for everyone. He has to work on the premise that he's dangerous, and since he's already lost one nephew, he'll be damned if he loses the other. Not on his watch!
I think Lan Qiren got such a raw deal in the original universe, and I'm going to make it up to him in this one. I'm also definitely going to find a spot to reveal to the brothers and Wei Ying that Lan Qiren was the one to deliver Cangse Sanren to safety. The shock value will be outstanding!
