Comment on Finders Keepers

  1. Kinda surprised so far no one has said anything about the r-word (slur?) being mentioned. Either way I’m enjoying this so far!

    1. I think this is particularly tricky.
In this context, the word "retard" is hinting towards another shallow-minded person generalizing everything that does not fit into her standards of being normal.
The fic is rated for a reason, though. It wouldn´t make sense if hell of all places didn't have that kind of characters using ableist language.

I am a fan of real talk and use harsh language in a creative context when it fits the use of it. Here: Reader thought about the slur specifically to empathize that they felt being treated as a lesser individual for something that shouldn't be judged or looked down upon.

Spoiler: Mammon WILL use a range of morally wrong choice of words.

      1. I get your point, but not everyone will see it that way. And that’s mainly what I was referring to when writing the comment. Some people just don’t want the word being used outright when there are multiple other ways to deliver the same message without needing that specific word. Or at least for the most part that’s what I see being argued normally.

I’m on the spectrum. At the end of the day it is just a word… Growing up I was called every other iteration of it but I along with many other people aren’t advocating “stupid” or “dumbass” to be considered slurs as well. Words are only as powerful as you make them out to be.

I guess I just want you to be cautious, I’ve seen another author who wrote about South Park receive a mountain of criticism for trying to use it in a similar context, which is kinda ridiculous since it’s literally South Park… World works in a strange way.

        1. Yeah, I really appreciated your comment! I added the tag "Slurs" so word-sensitive people are aware that violent language will be used. Of course, there will always be critics not like a type of writing or how it is done.
I am on the spectrum too, so I really wanted to use that line because I know that stare way too well. :D

        2. This is kinda messed up:/
I was gonna just close this fic after seeing the R slur since it’s not something that should be normalized but then I saw your comment.
You should know the struggle as an autistic person of how damaging this slur can be.
          It’s not just “a word”.
Anyone who isn’t on the spectrum might think this is normal to say and say it to other people.
The Helluva community is supposed to be inclusive, not toxic.
          This word ruins everything, respectfully.

          1. Hey! :) Thanks for the good feedback! I am glad you guys bring this up!

For me personally, I wouldn´t say I like censoring the word since it´s how I have been treated for such a long time and therefore hate to ignore it still exists, BUT you are right and I really appreciate your input.

I write for funsies and didn't consider that I shape people´s worldviews who didn't experience that stuff. It is a reader-centric fanfic after all.
Considering your and the other one´s comment I will change it. :-)

At first, I planned to make Mammon a big asshole who uses slurs since he is pretty offensive and discriminating in canon too. (fat shaming and sexism. HB is kinda hypocrite about diversity :/ )
He will be an abusive prick (since this is where the fic heads in the beginning), but there are many creative ways to make him a toxic asshole. So, I will avoid the R-word, when it comes to the reader.

            1. I can appreciate and respect that you put in the effort to change it.
I just worry people will not understand the boundary if the word is more and more normalized.
You can still make mammon a toxic a-hole, but like the other person said there’s so many other ways that can be done without the use of slurs.
The fact you’re changing it shows me you care enough, and I thank you for that.
I hope you have a wonderful day and your writing gets more traction, most authors would either ignore the criticism or delete it entirely.

          2. Idk man i dont think the helluva boss series is about the happy go lucky way of living and erasing every slur on this planet.
I mean... you're reading a fanfiction about MAMMON aka biggest asshole in the helluva boss fandom rn.
It would be in character for him to say stuff like that. (Sure they dont have to use every slur in the world jesus christ)

Also the author is writing this for free... and lets you enjoy this. Then saying its so messed up to write that... is just mean?

Also commenting as a guest so no one can click on your profil is oof, respectfully.

            1. You’re completely wrong.
In Cannon there’s plenty of moment where he can say it in writing, but did not.
Why? Because it’s not part of his vocabulary.
Viv wouldn’t introduce a long term supporting character in the show like that.
You can argue she would, but any offensive character as such has been seen to get killed (ex: the crazy fizz fan, Chaz).
I’m not saying Mammon won’t be rude, but I personally believe and stand with the fact that the R slur isn’t something he would say.
Sure the author is writing this for free, doesn’t mean it’s going to go criticism free if there’s controversial vocabulary in it.
Helluva boss had show you multiple times throughout the series of its inclusivity.
Maybe not in dialogue, but it’s there if you look.
I don’t see how me being a guest matters at all?
Unless you intended to stalk or harass me outside this thread for my opinion which is oof, respectfully
