    1. now you've got me thinking about the grishaverse music scene. composers, styles of music, etc. there's an opera scene in ketterdam but what about symphonies? who's who in the music scene? this is a wonderful rabbit hole you've sent me down thank you

      1. all i know is i need to know this now. either that or invent. also since grishaverse circa soc/ck is implicitly approx. equal with the 1890's our world (adding machines being a new invention as my evidence) we'd be right at the start of the jazz age with ragtime making its appearance on the scene. not sure what inej would think of ragtime honestly. inej would probably like it.

        1. thinking about the racial politics of jazz in our world, I think it's most likely that it arose from kerch among those indentured, but it also begs the question about the classical music scene. 1890s were the tail end of the romantic era for us, with also some nationalist politics in music, so if I had to guess there would definitely be some sort of equivalent composers, especially for places like ravka, fjerda, and kerch which maintain strong national identities

          1. i could see jazz/ragtime as barrel music particularly. the barrel is full of people like jesper and inej who came here from all the way across the sea, it's going to be a massive cultural exchange point and it's full of young people and the tourists they're entertaining, it's the perfect kind of place for new music to emerge. also i need to know what the ravkan equivalent of the 1812 overture is because there has to be one.

            1. there ABSOLUTELY has to be a ravkan equivalent!! and kerch would definitely be the place for new and fusion music to emerge. I so badly wish we just had grishaverse history books I would eat those up so quick

      2. also this has me thinking about the theatre scene in kerch outside of the komedie. i mean there's going to be one if there's an opera. what's it like? hm.

        1. ravka has a ballet as well, so there's definitely a dance/music scene... I wonder if there's specific composers that are famous for their ballets and operas the way there are specific actors famous in the komedie brute
