Hi! I'm gonna be honest. I have no idea where it exactly comes from. I have only been listening for a little under two years, and I just kinda know it's more of a pack nickname for Darlin' based on fanfics and some tumblr posts.
It seems that it is a fanbase given nickname for the character of Darlin' based on how in their audios/story they are often referred to as thinking of themself as invincible and being able to handle anything. I did binge watch a lot of Sam and Darlin's audios again, just to make sure i didn't forget or miss something, but it wasn't ever used in the videos I watched. So, unless Erik said something in one of his livestreams (I haven't watched any of those), I can only assume it is fanbase given nickname.
When I use it in my writing, unless the story is strictly between Sam and Darlin', I like to use Tank. When there's other characters they will use Tank (or Darlin' will refer to themselves as Tank), but Sam will only use Darlin'. I like it because it's used more as a childhood nickname for Darlin' that the Shaw pack still uses from when they were younger, and gives their backstory more depth. I also use Tank more as their actual name, which is why it's used by people that know them but aren't in the pack.

The reason is because Sam once called them a tank in one of his earlier audios, I think the one where he heals them? But the fandom liked it and started to refer to them with it even though it's technically not their "actual" name.
